4913b20259 #1281: English dialects in proofing — en-GB, en-CA, en-AU… flag each other's spellings (#1045) (#2632)
* #1281: English dialects in proofing — en-GB, en-CA, en-AU… flag each other's spellings (#1045)

English was one proofing language: en-GB, en-CA and en-AU all proofed like
US English, and US documents accepted British spellings. Now ProofLang has
three Englishes, picked by the tag's region:

- En (en-US, other regions, no language): British spellings flagged
 (colour → color).
- EnGb (en-GB, en-AU, en-NZ, en-IE, en-ZA, en-IN…): American spellings
 flagged (color → colour, center → centre, analyze → analyse); -ize and
 -ise both right (Oxford spelling).
- EnCa (en-CA): British -our/-re/-ence, American -ize, tire, program.

Data: assets/spelling/en-variants.txt, our own ~280 American/British
pairs with a policy per English (MIT OR Apache-2.0, ATTRIBUTION.md row).
Inflections by rule (crates/proof/src/en_variants.rs). A dialect's form
is right when the shared list knows it or its other spelling, so
"realisation" is right in en-GB. No system dictionary needed.

Suggestions put the dialect's own form first. Review › Language lists
English (Australia) and (Canada); the Language dialog adds India,
Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa (names in every catalog, not
native-reviewed). An English interface on an en-GB/en-CA/en-AU… region
writes new documents in that English. Options › Language shows the
document's language instead of a fixed "English (United States)".

Tests: per-dialect accept/flag/suggest, tag mapping, no-panic proptests,
engine end to end through review.language, DOCX w:lang round trip,
region-based editing language, language menu.

Midasdf 1678d93f54 #1681: ruby review follow-ups — tracked ODT ruby, HTML start space, docs
- ODT export reads the tracked insertion/deletion from a Ruby inline's formatting
 too (Item::marks and the paragraph's tracked check): an inserted or deleted
 phonetic guide keeps its change range around the base text instead of being
 written as untracked text.
- HTML export computes the paragraph-start state before the ruby's formatting tags,
 so a leading space in the base text becomes instead of a space HTML can
 collapse.
- docs/file-format-parity.md: restore main's format rows (the PR had replaced them
 with stale copies that lost ODT keep-with-next #2813, TXT #2853 and the HTML
 blockquote/MathML details) and add the ruby sentence to the retained .htm/.html
 row; restore the rolled-back header change list.
- docs/localization-parity.md: restore the header change list; date the new
 revision-history rows 2026-10-21.
- Tests: html_ruby_at_the_paragraph_start_keeps_a_leading_space and
 an_inserted_ruby_keeps_its_tracked_insertion.

Validation: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo clippy -p wordcraft-formats
--all-targets -- -D warnings; cargo test -p wordcraft-formats -> 204 passed,
0 failed (doctests 0).

midasdf a7f888055a #1681: HTML export and import keep furigana (ruby)
`InlineObject::Ruby` is written as `<ruby>base<rt>reading</rt></ruby>`, in the
base text's run formatting, and `<ruby>`/`<rb>`/`<rt>` are read back into one
ruby object, so docx/doc → HTML → doc keeps the annotation. `<rp>` fallback
parentheses and the tags are not text; unclosed or half-marked ruby (no `<rt>`,
empty `<rt>`, no base) is tolerated and keeps the text it held, with a block
boundary closing the element as a browser does. HTML states no alignment, size or
raise, so import uses the Phonetic Guide's defaults (centred, half the base size,
raised clear of the base text; the run's size, or 10.5 pt when none is stated).

The flow model gains `Inline::Ruby`; formats without ruby (RTF, ODT, Markdown,
LaTeX) write its base text as before. Tests: `html::tests::ruby_*` and
`tests::html_ruby_round_trip`. Docs: file-format-parity (HTML row) and
localization-parity (Japanese row).

Cursor AgentandCRBBeesy 60e3ff8881 i18n: File › Home greeting in every interface language
`home_page` already passes "Good morning", "Good afternoon" and "Good evening"
through `tl!`, but nine catalogs had no entry, so File › Home opened in English
in German, Estonian, Japanese, Brazilian Portuguese, Serbian (Cyrillic and
Latin), Ukrainian and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). Adds the three
greetings to each, and a test that every language has them.

c9a5191b70 i18n: French interface catalog completed (2,615 entries) with native-speaker review (#2492)
Adds the 402 entries the French catalog lacked: equation gallery (matrices, accents, brackets, integrals, operators, functions), built-in style and table-style names, citation styles, paper sizes, watermarks, and the Bookmark, Go To and Print dialog strings. Drops the obsolete 'Style: APA' entry. Terminology reviewed by a native French speaker and Word user. The Polish superset test exempts fr like the other catalogs carrying newer strings. Progress docs and people.toml updated.

11f1d0aee6 Lowercase list items no longer get a grammar underline (#1741) (#1783)
* #1741: WIP

* #1741: list items no longer get the sentence-capital grammar squiggle

The English "Capitalize the first word of a sentence" rule skips the first
word of a list paragraph (own or style numbering); later sentences are still
checked. check_text_with and paragraph_issues take a list_item flag.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* #1741: review fixes

Thread the capital-first flag into the Polish, Croatian, Italian, Turkish and
Portuguese grammar rules; test the drawn squiggles through layout() for own,
style and num 0 numbering; tidy the proof test.

d4a3292834 Proofing: -ically adverbs such as "specifically" are no longer flagged (#1694) (#1854)
* #1694: -ically adverbs are no longer flagged as misspelled

English spelling accepts "-ally" adverbs built on an "-ic" adjective in the
word list (specific → specifically, scientific → scientifically), as Word does.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

* #1694: only -ic adjectives take -ally

Review (FredApps): the "-ally" → stem rule applied to every known word,
so "desktopally" was accepted. The rule is now "-ically" → "-ic"
(specifically → specific); other words don't take "-ally".

Test: non_ic_words_do_not_take_ally (desktop, house, final, green).

NaxvogandClaude Opus 5.5 de3db3f02c Hyphenation: German patterns in NOTICE; pattern files skip \message
Review follow-ups: the German patterns' MIT notice goes into NOTICE with
the other pattern sets; the pattern reader skips other commands'
arguments, so hyph-de-1996.tex's \message{} line no longer adds junk
patterns and exception words; a load test for the German set; the
status bar names a bare "de" tag; the docs list the languages with
their own hyphenation.

NaxvogandClaude Opus 5.5 0fa438c7d1 Hyphenation: German text follows the German patterns
Runs in German (de, de-DE, de-AT, de-CH) hyphenated with the English
patterns, giving breaks such as "unterlieg-ende" and "rechtli-cher".
They now use hyph-utf8's German patterns for the reformed spelling
(MIT, bundled unmodified as assets/hyphenation/de.pat). German gets a
ProofLang of its own that, like Bulgarian, hyphenates only: no spelling
or grammar marks yet (#1564). Portuguese, Italian and German share one
pattern lookup.

4950690479 #498: Indonesian (id-ID) spelling proofing (#2576)
Indonesian spelling reads the installed Hunspell id_ID dictionary at runtime
(Debian/Ubuntu hunspell-id, LibreOffice dict-id, the Dictionaries folder or
WORDCRAFT_DICTIONARIES), like Czech, Polish and Portuguese: nothing is bundled,
and without a dictionary Indonesian text gets no spelling marks.

- ProofLang::Id for id, id-ID, ind and the legacy in tag
- suggestions reuse the dictionary-driven Czech ranking (MAP/REP/TRY/KEY of
 the loaded dictionary), nothing Indonesian hard-coded
- hyphenated reduplication accepted whole or by parts (kupu-kupu, anak-anak);
 hyphenated clitics after capitals/abbreviations (KTP-nya, se-Indonesia)
- generic grammar only: repeated word (offers anak-anak first), space before
 punctuation, double space, with Indonesian messages
- Review > Language, status bar, Set Proofing Language, File > Options >
 Proofing list Indonesian; name translated in every catalog
- tests use a hand-written synthetic dictionary; engine end-to-end test

Filip Strajnar dfdce752dc i18n(sl): add the 155 strings main gained since the catalog was drafted
Rebased on main. sl.tsv now has 2,614 entries, every key of every other
catalog, including the native print settings (Tiskalnik, Odtenki sive,
Obojestransko tiskanje), mail merge filter and sort, Go To, bookmarks,
privacy options, interface size and dictionary folder strings. Three keys
main renamed were replaced.

- Slovenian added alongside Vietnamese, Swedish and Croatian in the
 language list, the audit list and the Polish coverage exclusions.
- New test: sl has no keys outside the other catalogs.
- localization-parity.md, localization-sl.md and ROADMAP.md counts,
 language lists and status lines updated.

Filip Strajnar 262310756d i18n: add Slovenian (sl) interface translation
A 2,463-entry Slovenian catalog: every key of every other catalog in the
repository (built-in style names, equation gallery, paper sizes, citation
styles included). Written from the meaning of the English labels in ordinary
Slovenian computing vocabulary; no other product's localisation was used.
Counts use count-neutral wording ("Besede: 21"), since the catalog has no
dual/plural forms.

- sl, sl-SI, sl_SI.UTF-8 select it automatically; "Slovenščina" in Options
 and ui.language with {"value":"sl"}.
- The interface audit checks Slovenian coverage the way it checks Russian.
- Tests: locales and saved preference, catalog coverage and key terms,
 count wording, and bundled fonts covering č, š, ž.
- docs/localization-sl.md with conventions and terminology; parity table,
 README, ROADMAP and ATTRIBUTION updated.
2026-10-15 18:57:13 +02:00
6e25d482c4 proof: Czech (cs-CZ) spelling from the installed Hunspell dictionary (#1048)
Same pattern as Portuguese (#797) and Polish (#346): the cs_CZ
dictionary is read from the system at runtime (e.g. Debian/Ubuntu
hunspell-cs), nothing is bundled. Suggestions use the dictionary's own
MAP/REP/TRY/KEY; grammar stays generic (repeated word, spacing), with
digit ratios like "3 : 1" exempt. The Czech interface now writes new
documents (and opened .txt/.md) in cs-CZ.

Engine fixes the Czech dictionary needs, also used by pl/pt:
- PFX/SFX header lines may carry a trailing comment (cs_CZ has
 "SFX y Y 80 #…"); rule lines are left literal;
- NOSUGGEST stems are accepted when typed but never offered;
- KEY is parsed for neighbour-key suggestions.

Tests use a hand-written synthetic Czech dictionary only; an
end-to-end engine test mirrors the Portuguese one.

1e02093462 i18n: add Croatian (hr) interface translation (#1271)
* i18n: add Croatian (hr) interface translation

Croatian interface catalog (2,505 entries: every key of the reference catalog, built-in style
names, equation gallery, print dialog), registered as `hr` ("Hrvatski"). `hr`, `hr-HR` and
`hr_HR.UTF-8` system locales pick it automatically.

- Count-neutral wording (`Riječi: 21`), since Croatian numerals take three noun forms.
- New `template` catalog context: the "Letter" template can be called "Pismo" while the "Letter"
 paper size keeps its name. Other languages fall back to their plain entry, so nothing changes.
- Locale, saved-preference, catalog-coverage and bundled-font tests; `hr` added to the
 interface-audit languages; Polish's coverage test lists `hr` with it/hu/bg.
- Written from the meaning of the English labels (clean room, no Word localisation consulted),
 proofread by a second model and reviewed by a native speaker.
- ATTRIBUTION row, contributors entry for the author, docs and roadmap.

Croatian spelling and grammar proofing is separate (#1114).

3cbea099f1 i18n: add Swedish (sv) interface translation (#1219)
* i18n: add Swedish (sv) interface translation

A 2,504-entry Swedish catalog: every key of the reference catalog, the equation gallery's
labels, everything the interface audit finds, and 44 newer strings no catalog had yet (the
native print settings among them). Written from the meaning of the English labels in ordinary
Swedish computing vocabulary; no other product's localisation and no other catalog was used.
An AI-assisted draft whose terminology and running app were reviewed by a native speaker.
Counts use count-neutral wording ("21 ord").

- sv, sv-SE, sv_SE.UTF-8 and sv-FI select it automatically; "Svenska" in Options and
 ui.language with {"value":"sv"}.
- The interface audit checks Swedish the way it checks Russian, Hungarian, Turkish and
 Bulgarian.
- Tests: locales and saved preference, catalog coverage and key translations, the search
 hint's example, count wording, and the bundled Inter/JetBrains Mono faces covering å ä ö é.
- native_print: the narrow-window test pins English, since it finds controls by their English
 labels (it failed on a Swedish machine once those labels had a translation).
- The Hungarian locale test used sv-SE as an unsupported language; it now uses fi-FI.
- ATTRIBUTION, README, ROADMAP, docs/localization-parity.md and a new
 docs/localization-sv.md; a contributors/people.toml entry for @holmbom.

- Italian: the 18 strings the interface audit looks up that it.tsv lacked
 (Reading Mode bar, Go To, command search, status and command messages);
 `Privacy Settings` no longer says "current".
- The audit's catalog-completeness check covers Italian too.
- docs/localization-parity.md: status line, Italian note, revision history.

a3ec498f2a Italian proofing: po', qual è, È and un/un' grammar rules; more elisions in spelling (#1585)
* Italian proofing: po', qual è, È and un/un' grammar rules; more elisions in spelling

- grammar (works without a dictionary): un pò / un po -> un po'; qual'è -> qual è;
 E' -> È; un'altro -> un altro and un altra -> un'altra (also nessun, ciascun,
 qualcun, alcun), gender from the ending with masculine -ista/-ma/-cida... left alone;
 more emphatic doubles allowed (pian piano, poco poco, così così...)
- spelling: more elisions (dov'è, cos'è, anch'io, senz'altro, nessun'altra, n'ha...),
 truncations po'/mo'/be' accepted, pò and qual'è left to grammar (no double marks)
- tests: rule tests, grammar proptests, Italian suggestion proptest, It in mixed-span proptest

92c0036d72 Russian proofing: spelling, suggestions, grammar and word division (#894)
* Russian proofing: spelling, suggestions, grammar and word division

Runs tagged ru get Russian tools instead of none:
- spelling against an installed ru_RU Hunspell dictionary (not bundled;
 LibreOffice dict-ru folders searched; KOI8-R and Windows-1251 decoded),
 with ё optional, hyphenated words and solid compounds understood, не with
 adjectives, participles and verbal nouns, prefixed verbs, abbreviations
 with endings and camel case left alone, plus our supplement of modern
 words with their declensions (assets/spelling/ru-extra.txt);
- suggestions tuned for Russian: е/ё, letter groups, common confusions,
 missing spaces, typos and a stem scan;
- grammar rules with Russian messages (repeated words, spaces, sentence
 capitals with Russian abbreviations, likely missing commas before
 clause openers, doubled punctuation);
- Russian word division from the spelling rules, written as code.

* Options: Russian in the dictionaries list (ProofLang::Ru arm)

e1f34a90d6 Proofing: a Dictionaries folder setting, and the dictionary each language found (#1063) (#1084)
File › Options › Proofing gets a Dictionaries folder: a folder of Hunspell
.aff/.dic files searched before the system locations, saved with the settings
and applied at start-up. An app started from Finder or the Dock doesn't see
WORDCRAFT_DICTIONARIES, so this is how it finds a dictionary kept in a folder
of the user's own. Changing it reloads the Polish and Portuguese dictionaries
and checks the text again. The pane lists the dictionary file each language
found, or that none was found, so missing spelling marks are explained.

Agents set it with file.options {"dictionariesFolder": path | "auto"}; a
missing folder or a relative path is refused and changes nothing.

6ed1877ce6 i18n(cs): complete the Czech catalog (built-in styles, equation gallery) (#978)
* i18n(cs): wording fixes after #387

SmartArt graphic and layout terms consistent with the rest of the
catalog, inline equation, plural-safe print count, grammar terminology
(mluvnice), tab stop type, file-not-found gender, review author label.
Also adds the [people.Losminek] contributor entry.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* i18n(cs): complete the Czech catalog (built-in styles, equation gallery)

Adds the 386 keys the Russian and Spanish catalogs have and Czech did
not: built-in style names and numbered families, the equation gallery,
watermarks, paper sizes, table styles, preview tiles and the remaining
ribbon/menu labels. The Czech coverage test now requires every Russian
and Spanish key and checks built-in style names; localization-parity
updated.

* i18n(cs): shorter Proofing label

"Kontrola pravopisu a mluvnice" overflows the fixed 170 px Options
pane list into the content. "Kontrola pravopisu" fits and also reads
well as the Review ribbon group name.

b3132a0b11 Review › Language reaches every proofing language (#860) (#1151)
* #860: Language menu opens Set Proofing Language… and Language Preferences…

Review › Language (and the status bar's language menu) offered only four
languages since #346 replaced the button that opened the Language dialog,
so French and the other 25 languages, and Set As Default, were out of
reach. The menu now ends with Set Proofing Language… (the Language dialog)
and Language Preferences… (Options › Language); a language outside the
short list shows by name and checked, and the status bar names it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* #860: other regions of a language show by name, and no language shows twice

A tag outside the Language dialog's list (fr-CA, en-AU, de-AT) shows as the
language and region (French (Canada)) instead of the raw tag; pt-AO is
Portuguese (Angola), not Brazil. A current language named like a short-list
entry checks that entry rather than showing again above the list.

646349d521 Interface-translation audit green and back in CI (#1128) (#1143)
({name} {height} × {width} in, {kind}, {columns} × {rows}, …) and use the
 region's decimal separator; the fixed-format paper rows dead since #838 are
 removed from six catalogs.
- 20 strings added to all 18 catalogs: status-bar messages (table split and
 merge, ink replay, citations, SmartArt, Researcher, Design defaults), the
 Reading Mode toolbar, Go To, Search's Suggested, envelope paper names.
- Audit: citation style names stay exempt as proper names; `bad parameters:`
 errors (JSON parameter names for scripts and MCP) stay English like the
 other engine errors; placeholder-only patterns need no entry.
- Flakiness: the Read Aloud player drew the speech worker's error straight
 from shared state, so with no TTS engine an error landing between poll and
 draw was shown without being known to the app (the rare failure under
 load); it now draws the error poll saw. The audit holds Read Aloud (no
 speech thread, no sound) and gathers process-wide names (fonts, custom
 dictionary) every frame, since tests running alongside change them.
 #[ignore] removed.

5baaf97413 M15: Polish catalog covers style names, watermarks, paper sizes and the equation gallery (#871)
Adds the 374 strings the Polish catalog still lacked, mostly from #750 by

2f833b6acf Sorting and table numbers follow the text's language (#836, #837) (#844)
* #836, #837: language-aware sorting and locale numbers in tables

Sorts (Table > Sort, Home > Sort, index and its letter headings, bibliography,
Table of Authorities) use the text language's alphabet via a small pure-Rust
collation (crates/doc/src/collate.rs). Table sort and formulas read numbers
with the cell language's decimal/group separators and write formula results
with its decimal separator (crates/doc/src/locale_number.rs). Sort comparators
are now total orders.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* #836, #837 review: ordinals, leading zeros, percentages; untagged text; decomposed letters

- parse_number: a trailing separator with no digits is the whole number (`1.`, a
 numbered "Lp." column, sorts as 1); a first group of `0` is never grouping
 (`0.125` in Polish is 0.125, not 125); a trailing `%` is ignored (`12 %` is 12);
 an en dash is a minus.
- Text with no language follows the document default, else the editing language
 (`cmd::default_lang`), as AutoCorrect does: a Polish interface reads `3,50` as
 3.5 in an untagged document. Table sort and formulas, paragraph sort, the
 index, the bibliography and the Table of Authorities use it.
- Collation composes a letter and a following combining mark first (table from
 Unicode NFC), so a decomposed `ż` (z + U+0307) sorts as `ż`.
- Tests: every Polish letter and its index heading, decomposed letters, the
 ordinal column, an untagged Polish SUM, Polish bibliography order.
