## Roadmap
`ROADMAP.md` (committed) is the one-page summary: stage, headline numbers, dimensions, languages, progress log. It follows craftrules' [`standards/progress-docs.md`](https://github.com/storytold/craftrules/blob/main/standards/progress-docs.md). Details: `docs/target-app-parity.md` (assessment), `docs/gaps.md` (ranked work list: pick from the top), `docs/roadmap.md` (milestones, current focus), `docs/parity-checklist.md` (presence checklist, `cargo xtask parity`), and the typography, file-format, UI, hardware and localization parity docs in `docs/`. When work lands, update the affected docs and their status lines, delete or shrink the closed gap, and add a progress-log line to ROADMAP.md.
## User docs
User docs live in `docs/user/` and are published at https://getartcraft.com/docs/designcraft. If a change alters something a user sees or does (menu or dialog labels, install, file formats, errors), update the matching page in `docs/user/` in the same PR, or add one. Rules: `docs/user/AGENTS.md`.

# User docs: rules for agents and contributors
Everything in this folder (except this file, CLAUDE.md and README.md) is published at
https://getartcraft.com/docs/designcraft. The file path is the URL:
`troubleshooting/app-closes-at-start.md` → `/docs/designcraft/troubleshooting/app-closes-at-start`.
Renaming a file breaks links, so add the old path to `redirect_from` when you rename.
## Who reads this
Artists and designers using DesignCraft, Discord mods answering them, and AI assistants looking things up for
either. Write for an artist, not a developer.
## Page rules
- One question or problem per page. Lead with the answer or the fix in the first two lines.
- Plain words, short sentences, numbered steps for anything the reader does.
- Start the body at `##`. The page title comes from frontmatter.
- Link to other pages instead of repeating them. Use relative links to the `.md` file:
`[Install DesignCraft](../getting-started/install.md)`.
- No marketing copy, no "simply", no claims you have not checked in the code or a release.
- Call the product "DesignCraft", as the app, its downloads and getartcraft.com do.
- Name UI labels exactly as the app shows them, in **bold**.
- Document Windows 11 only. Do not name older Windows versions.
- Troubleshooting pages: `## Symptoms`, `## Fix`, `## Why this happens` (optional),
`## Still stuck?` (link the issue tracker or Discord).
## Frontmatter
---
title: App closes right after it starts
description: One sentence for search results, link previews and AI summaries.
order: 10 # optional, sorts within the folder (lower first)
verified: 0.6.0 # optional, app version you last checked this page against
redirect_from: [old/path] # optional, old URLs (relative to /docs/designcraft)
---
Only `key: value` and `key: [a, b]` lines work. Quote values that start with a quote or contain ` #`.
Set `verified` to the workspace `version` in the root `Cargo.toml` whenever you check a
page against the current code.
## Folders
- `getting-started/` install and first run
- `guides/` how to do one thing
- `troubleshooting/` symptom → fix
- `faq/` short answers
- `reference/` lists and settings
A folder's `index.md` names the folder in the sidebar. Files or folders starting with `_` are
drafts and are not published.
## Check before you push
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/storytold/artcraft-services/main/frontend/apps/artcraft-website-next/scripts/docs/core.mjs -o /tmp/docs-core.mjs
node /tmp/docs-core.mjs docs/user
CI runs the same check on every PR that touches `docs/user/`.
## Support PRs
Pages written to answer a user question come in as PRs titled `docs(support): <page title>`.
Review them like code: check every claim against the source. Questions and bugs go to
https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/issues.

title: Can DesignCraft open InDesign files?
description: DesignCraft opens and exports InDesign Markup (.idml) files. The Open dialog does not list InDesign's own .indd format.
order: 30
verified: 0.6.0
---
Yes for IDML, the InDesign Markup format. DesignCraft can open `.idml` files and export them with **File**, then **Export IDML…**.
The **Open…** dialog lists `.designcraft` and `.idml` files only, so it does not offer InDesign's own `.indd` files. See [Open a DesignCraft or InDesign (IDML) file](../guides/open-a-file.md).
IDML import is not complete. Open issues in the tracker report that custom text-wrap boundaries ([#451](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/issues/451)) and saved image clipping paths ([#450](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/issues/450)) are lost when importing IDML, and that bullets and numbers in lists show as missing-font magenta in some templates ([#110](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/issues/110)). Check your layout after importing.
DesignCraft can also export PDF (including PDF/X-4 and PDF/A-2b), PNG and EPUB. See [Export a PDF](../guides/export-a-pdf.md).

Yes. DesignCraft is free. It has no subscription, no licence server and no telemetry.
The code is open source under your choice of the [MIT](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/blob/main/LICENSE-MIT) or [Apache-2.0](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/blob/main/LICENSE-APACHE) licence. DesignCraft is in pre-alpha, so some InDesign features are not there yet. DesignCraft runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and in a modern web browser. The release also has builds for FreeBSD.
- **Windows 11**: x64, arm64 and x86 installers, plus portable zips.
- **macOS**: one universal build for Apple silicon and Intel.
- **Linux**: x86_64 and aarch64 as AppImage, Flatpak, `.deb`, `.rpm` or tarball, and a RISC-V tarball.
- **Web**: a static site you host yourself (`designcraft-web-<ver>.zip`). It runs on WebGPU and falls back to WebGL2. The web build has no control channel, and Save and Export download the file.
All files are on the [latest release](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/releases/latest). See [Install DesignCraft](../getting-started/install.md) for steps.

title: Install DesignCraft
description: Download DesignCraft 0.6.0 for Windows 11, macOS or Linux, or install it from ArtCraft Launcher.
order: 20
verified: 0.6.0
---
Download the file for your system from the [latest release](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/releases/latest) and install it. In the file names, `<ver>` stands for the version number, for example `0.6.0`. The release also has `SHA256SUMS.txt`, which lists a checksum for every file. The [DesignCraft page on getartcraft.com](https://getartcraft.com/apps/designcraft) links to the download as well.
## Windows 11
1. Open the [latest release](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/releases/latest).
2. Download `designcraft-<ver>-windows-x64.msi`. It fits most PCs (64-bit Intel and AMD).
3. Run the file and follow the installer.
4. Start **DesignCraft** from the Start menu.
The release also has an `arm64` installer for ARM PCs such as Snapdragon, and an `x86` installer for 32-bit Windows. To run without installing, download `designcraft-<ver>-windows-x64-portable.zip` (or the `arm64` or `x86` version), unzip it and start the program inside. The installers and executables are code-signed.
## macOS
1. Download `designcraft-<ver>-macos-universal.dmg`. It works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.
2. Open it and drag DesignCraft to Applications.
The app is signed and notarized.
## Linux
Pick one file from the release. Replace `x86_64` with `aarch64` on ARM.
| File | Notes |
|-------------------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------|
| `designcraft-<ver>-linux-x86_64.AppImage` | Runs anywhere. |
| `designcraft-<ver>-linux-x86_64.flatpak` | Sandboxed. Install with `flatpak install --user <file>`. |
| `designcraft-<ver>-linux-x86_64.deb` | Debian and Ubuntu. |
| `designcraft-<ver>-linux-x86_64.rpm` | Fedora, RHEL and openSUSE. |
| `designcraft-<ver>-linux-x86_64.tar.gz` | Unpack anywhere. |
For RISC-V there is only `designcraft-<ver>-linux-riscv64.tar.gz`. It needs glibc 2.39 or newer (Ubuntu 24.04 or newer). A FreeBSD build (`designcraft-<ver>-freebsd-x86_64.tar.gz`) is on the release page too.
## Install with ArtCraft Launcher
ArtCraft Launcher lists DesignCraft and can install and update it for you. See [ArtCraft Launcher](https://getartcraft.com/docs/craft-launcher) for how it works.
## First run
Open DesignCraft. You land on the start screen. Continue with [Get started](index.md). If the window closes right away, see [DesignCraft closes right after it starts](../troubleshooting/app-closes-at-start.md).

Choose **File**, then **New Document…** (Ctrl+N), set the page size and margins, and click **OK**.
## Steps
1. Open the **File** menu and choose **New Document…**. On the start screen you can click **New file** instead.
2. In the **New Document** dialog, pick a **Preset**, or leave it and type your own **Width** and **Height**.
3. Set **Pages**, and tick **Facing Pages** if you want left and right pages side by side as spreads.
4. Set **Columns** and the **Gutter** between them.
5. Set the margins: **Top**, **Bottom**, **Inside** and **Outside**.
6. Set **Bleed** if the document goes to print.
7. Tick **Primary Text Frame** if you want a text frame that fills the margins on each page.
8. Click **OK**.
## Presets
The **Preset** list has these page sizes:
- Print: Letter, Legal, Tabloid, Letter - Half, A3, A4, A5, A6, B5, Business Card, Postcard.

## Steps
1. Open the **File** menu and choose **Open…**. On the start screen you can click **Open** instead.
2. In the file dialog, pick a file. The dialog lists two kinds: **DesignCraft** (`.designcraft`) and **InDesign Markup (IDML)** (`.idml`).
3. Confirm the dialog. The document opens as a new document.
## What the Open dialog accepts
The Open dialog lists `.designcraft` and `.idml` files only. To bring an image, a PDF or a text file into a document, use [Place](place-images-and-text.md) instead.
IDML is InDesign Markup, the exchange format InDesign can export. Linked images are read from next to the file or from its `Links` folder. If a `Document Fonts` folder sits beside the file, DesignCraft loads those fonts first.
## Missing fonts
Text that uses a font DesignCraft cannot find is highlighted in pink. This is the missing-font highlight. Put the font files in a `Document Fonts` folder beside the file, or install the fonts on your system, so DesignCraft can find them.
## Import warnings
If an IDML package is missing some of its parts, DesignCraft still opens what it can and shows an alert titled **Import Warnings** that names the missing parts. Your other open documents stay as they are. Click **OK** to close the alert.
## Save it again
**File**, then **Save** (Ctrl+S) writes a `.designcraft` file. To hand the layout back to InDesign, use **File**, then **Export IDML…**.

| Layout | idml, designcraft (one page's objects, placed as a group) |
| Media | mp4, m4v, mov, webm, mp3, m4a, wav, ogg (placed in a media frame) |
The same dialog has separate filters for **Graphics**, **Text (Word, RTF, plain, Excel)** and **Video and sound**.
## Place a page of a PDF
1. Choose **File**, then **Place…** and pick a PDF with more than one page.
2. In the **Place PDF** dialog, type the page number in **Page**. The label shows the page count.
3. Pick a box in **Crop to:**. The choices are **Crop**, **Trim**, **Bleed**, **Art** and **Media**.
4. Click **OK**.
A PDF with one page is placed without this dialog.
## Place Word or RTF text with your styles
**File**, then **Place with Import Options…** (Ctrl+Shift+D) opens an **Import Options** dialog for `.docx` and `.rtf` files, where you can map the file's styles to your document's styles before the text lands. For other file types it places the file straight away.

DesignCraft is a page layout and publishing app. It is an open-source alternative to Adobe InDesign, built from scratch by the ArtCraft team. If you know InDesign's tools, menus and panels, you will find them here.
It has spreads and parent pages, text frames that thread from one to the next, paragraph and character styles, swatches and text wrap. It opens and saves InDesign Markup (IDML) files and exports PDF, PNG and EPUB. It is free, with no subscription, licence server or telemetry. The project is in pre-alpha, so expect gaps.

title: DesignCraft closes right after it starts
description: On Windows, DesignCraft shows a brief spinner and then closes with no message. Update, or force the DirectX 12 graphics backend.
order: 10
verified: 0.6.0
---
If DesignCraft flashes a spinner and closes, update to the [latest release](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/releases/latest). If it still closes, set the environment variable `WGPU_BACKEND` to `dx12` and start it again.
## Symptoms
- On Windows, DesignCraft opens briefly with a spinner or a quick blue circle, then closes. No error message appears.
- Windows may record a crash that names a graphics driver file such as `atio6axx.dll` (AMD) or `igvk64.dll` (Intel).
- It happens with the installer and the portable version.
## Fix
1. Install the [latest release](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/releases/latest). DesignCraft remembers a start that never showed a window and tries the next graphics backend on the following start. On Windows the order is DirectX 12, Vulkan, then OpenGL, and the status bar says when it switches. A reporter who could not start 0.5.0 on Windows 11 Enterprise wrote that 0.6.0 launched without trouble.
2. If it still closes, set an environment variable named `WGPU_BACKEND` with the value `dx12`. Start DesignCraft from a shell where it is set, or add it in Windows settings for your account. People who hit this crash with an AMD graphics driver reported that DesignCraft starts with `WGPU_BACKEND=dx12`.
3. Start DesignCraft again.
Setting `WGPU_BACKEND` also turns off the automatic fallback. Other accepted values are `vulkan` and `gl`, and a comma-separated list lets the graphics library choose among them.
## Why this happens
DesignCraft draws the canvas on the CPU and uses the graphics card only to show the interface. Some graphics drivers crash while the window is being set up, and a crash in a driver ends the program before DesignCraft can react. One AMD laptop's Vulkan driver crashed on the first frame, which is why DirectX 12 is the default on Windows.
## Start the backend search over
DesignCraft keeps its record of failed backends in a file called `gpu.json` in its settings folder, the one that holds `ui.json`, `prefs.json` and the `logs` folder (`%APPDATA%\DesignCraft\logs\` is the log folder on Windows). Delete the file to start the search again. The list also starts over after every backend has failed, and with a new DesignCraft version.

title: Report a problem
description: What to include and where to post when DesignCraft misbehaves or crashes.
order: 20
verified: 0.6.0
---
Post in the [issue tracker](https://github.com/storytold/designcraft/issues) or in [Discord](https://discord.gg/artcraft), and attach the log file. The log is the most useful thing you can send after a crash.
## What to include
- Your DesignCraft version and how you installed it (installer, portable, AppImage and so on).
- Your operating system and graphics card.
- What you did, what you expected and what happened.
- The log file `designcraft.log`.
## Where the log is
DesignCraft writes `logs/designcraft.log` in its settings folder, beside `ui.json` and `prefs.json`.
| System | Log folder |
|---------|-------------------------------------------------------------------------|
| Windows | `%APPDATA%\DesignCraft\logs\` |
| macOS | `~/Library/Application Support/DesignCraft/logs/` |
| Linux | `~/.config/designcraft/logs/` (or `$XDG_CONFIG_HOME/designcraft/logs/`) |
Each start moves the previous log to `designcraft.1.log`, and that one to `designcraft.2.log`. The log from a run that crashed survives the next start, so attach `designcraft.1.log` if you have restarted since. The file stops growing at 16 MiB.
## More detail in the log
Set the environment variable `RUST_LOG` to `debug` before starting DesignCraft to log more. The default is `info` for DesignCraft's own parts and `warn` for everything else.
