select.column (Mod+Shift+F8) selects the same x range on a run of lines, from two positions, two page points (Alt+drag), or by toggling column mode where the arrow keys extend the block. Copy/Cut give one line per row, Delete/Backspace remove only the block, character formatting and Change Case apply per row, typing/paste replace the block. Any ordinary caret move drops it. F8 keys now reach their shortcuts in the UI.
