Fixes #3708; part of #1540 (Flatpak needs its own follow-up: each sandbox has its own loopback). A second launch hands its files to the running instance over an authenticated loopback channel (random port, 32-byte token in a private instance.json, constant-time check, bounded clients, requests and paths). Files are acknowledged only once the UI has taken them; the instance shuts the hand-off down before a CPU-compatibility relaunch; it runs only in the per-user settings mode. --new-instance and PHOTOCRAFT_NEW_INSTANCE=1 opt out. Thanks to @MrCloudy2 (#2358), whose Linux version first handled the relaunch and per-user endpoints, and @Desayuno64 (#5273), whose shutdown flag and read deadline informed the final design.

//! One PhotoCraft per user on Windows and Linux (#3708): a file opened from Explorer or a file
//! manager lands as a new tab in the running window, like Photoshop, instead of starting a second
//! copy of the program.
//!
//! The first launch takes an exclusive OS lock on `instance.lock` in the settings directory (the OS
//! drops it when the process ends, crash included), listens on a loopback port and writes the port
//! plus a fresh 256-bit token to `instance.json`. A later launch that finds the lock taken sends its
//! paths there; the primary queues them for the UI as [`OsEvent::Open`], which opens each one and
//! brings the window forward. Explorer starts one process per file when several are opened at once;
//! the lock decides the race, so they all end up as tabs in one window.
//!
//! The primary answers `ok` only once the UI has taken the paths. A launch that hears anything else
//! (the primary is still starting, hung, or quitting) keeps retrying the lock, so it becomes the
//! primary itself as soon as the old one lets go, and when its time runs out it starts a separate
//! instance: a file is never acknowledged and then dropped. [`Primary::shutdown`] runs when the
//! event loop ends (and before the CPU-compatibility relaunch), so a closing PhotoCraft refuses new
//! files and frees the lock.
//!
//! Only for the per-user settings folder ([`skip_reason`]): a portable copy's folder beside the
//! executable, or a `PHOTOCRAFT_CONFIG_DIR`, may be shared between users.
//! macOS doesn't need this: LaunchServices already sends a running app an open-documents event.

- **Web:** the wasm32 build never embeds craft-fonts, even with `CRAFT_FONTS_DIR` set: measured on 2026-10-06, the UI face alone took the release wasm from 24.19 MB to 28.87 MB, over the 24 MiB gate in `packaging/web/package.sh`. Instead it loads fonts served next to it, on demand: `fonts/manifest.txt` beside `index.html`, in craft-fonts' manifest format (`crates/text/src/served.rs`; hosting: `packaging/web/README.md` › Fonts). `PHOTOCRAFT_WEB_FONTS_DIR="$PWD/../craft-fonts" packaging/web/package.sh` puts craft-fonts there. Served families are in the font menus and are fetched when picked or when a document's text needs them; they aren't in the script fallback list yet, so Japanese text set in a Latin font still needs a Japanese font picked (#1615).
- Tests that need the fonts skip with a message when `CRAFT_FONTS` is empty; CI runs them again with `CRAFT_FONTS_DIR` set, in its own Linux job (`test (with craft-fonts)`). Desktop releases check out craft-fonts at the commit pinned in `.github/workflows/release.yml` (`CRAFT_FONTS_REF`; ci.yml pins the same commit) and ship each font's `OFL.txt` as `OFL-<family>.txt`.

## One instance per user
On Windows and Linux the first PhotoCraft holds an exclusive lock on `instance.lock` in the config directory and listens on a loopback port named in `instance.json` (with a fresh 256-bit token; the file is 0600 on Unix). A later launch hands its file arguments there and exits, so files opened from Explorer or a file manager become tabs in the running window (#3708). The primary answers `ok` only once its UI has taken the files; a launch that gets anything else (the primary is starting, hung or closing) keeps retrying the lock for up to 10 s, becoming the primary itself once the old one lets go, and then starts a separate instance, so a file is never acknowledged and lost. When the event loop ends (and before the CPU-compatibility relaunch) the primary refuses new files and frees the lock. It applies only with the per-user settings folder: a portable copy (`PhotoCraftData` beside the executable) or `PHOTOCRAFT_CONFIG_DIR` may be shared between users, so those launches run separately. So do `--new-instance` (or `PHOTOCRAFT_NEW_INSTANCE=1`), every `--control` launch, and launches given a per-process option (`--safe-gpu`, `--present-mode`, `--frame-latency`, `--stroke-trace`, `--in-window-menus`, `--automation-*-root`). A `cargo run` while an installed PhotoCraft is running forwards to it: pass `--new-instance` or set `PHOTOCRAFT_CONFIG_DIR`. macOS gets the same behaviour from LaunchServices (`apple_events.rs`). On native Wayland the running window can't bring itself forward (that takes the launcher's `XDG_ACTIVATION_TOKEN`, and winit 0.30 can't activate an existing window with one), so it asks for attention instead and the taskbar highlights it; X11, XWayland and Windows bring it to the front. Flatpak needs its own follow-up (#1540). Code: `apps/photocraft/src/single_instance.rs`.

## Graphics startup and device loss
`--safe-gpu` starts with the CPU renderer for one launch (no GPU canvas; a software adapter for the window where the platform has one: WARP on Windows, llvmpipe over GL on Linux). Before creating the wgpu device the app writes and locks `gpu-starting.json` in the config directory; it clears it once the first frames have rendered. A launch that finds an unlocked marker knows the previous start died inside the graphics driver (#4) and uses the next safer backend (Windows: Vulkan → DX12 → CPU; Linux: Vulkan → GL → CPU; macOS: Metal → CPU), remembering a working hardware backend in `performance.gpuBackend` (Preferences › Performance › GPU Backend, with **Reset GPU Backend**). CPU recovery is temporary until **Keep Using CPU** is chosen in the recovery dialog; dismissing the dialog or quitting without a choice preserves the previous GPU preference (#3483). With `auto`, Intel adapters on Windows use DX12. Help › System Info shows the adapter, backend, driver and fallback state.
