* M5.6: preserve nested annotation values in FDF exports
Copy and renumber retained object graphs without expanding aliases or following
indirect cycles recursively. Refuse excessive work and propagate export errors
before the destination is written. Cover saved geometry, colour and borders,
shared graphs, streams, stale references and refusal through automation tools.
Co-Authored-By: Codex <noreply@openai.com>
* Bound FDF annotation copying before allocation
Keep selected aliases shared, budget retained keys and values before copying, and add direct-payload and alias-count regressions. Retain copied-graph limits and document source-memory scope.
* M5.6: bound FDF cache-eviction discovery and field values
Extend the concurrent annotation-budget correction while retaining its direct-payload and alias regressions. Record annotation positions instead of resolved bodies so cache eviction cannot pin repeated parsed copies; borrow direct values and budget retained entries before cloning. Count every emitted multi-select field value before allocating its output array.
Observed pre-fix allocation-cap and field-limit failures, then fixed tests passed. Final validation: 549 scoped XFDF/engine/automation tests passed, three existing ignored; strict all-targets Clippy, WASM, fmt, layers, assets, parity and diff checks passed.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for @MMexicann.
* M5.6: record bounded FDF export regression evidence
Record comment cache-eviction discovery and emitted-field-value budget regressions without changing feature scores or status. Describe copied-graph limits and existing source-parser limits precisely. Final 549 scoped tests, strict Clippy, WASM, fmt, layers, assets and parity passed.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for @MMexicann.
* M5.6: align FDF progress with budgeted discovery
Document lazy annotation positions, cache-eviction coverage and copied-graph limits while retaining the original nested-value progress entry and all upstream notes. Estimates unchanged.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for @MMexicann.
* M5.6: describe FDF discovery and copied-graph limits
Align exchange documentation with the tested lazy-position discovery implementation and its copied-graph limits. Source parsing/page discovery keep existing limits.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for @MMexicann.
* M5.6: align milestone notes with FDF discovery limits
Retain upstream milestone history and describe the tested discovery/copy budgets without increasing estimates or claiming a total source-memory bound.
AI assistance: OpenAI Codex for @MMexicann.
* M5.6: keep nested page links out of FDF exports
Preserve graph aliases and existing budgets; exclude direct and indirect Page/Pages type names. Add saved-PDF regression and bounded type-resolution controls. Both pre-fix failures observed; 46 scoped tests, strict Clippy, WASM and formatting passed.
* M5.6: document bounded nested page exclusion
Address maintainer feedback on the existing PR. Preserve upstream work and document the tested scope and remaining validation limits.

The earlier notes cited an observation made on a public real-world form,
which the Privacy rule does not allow. Re-observed in Acrobat Pro on
synthetic forms (three breakBefore pageArea sections, then a page area with
occur min=1 max=1, with and without relevant="-print"):
- the once-only page comes last in both;
- when printing it is kept in both, blank only with relevant="-print";
- a breakBefore on the first section, with or without startNew, makes
Acrobat open an empty body page first (5 pages); with no break on the
first section it lays out 4, as PdfCraft does. Recorded as a gap.

* M10: Office export reads forms as far as the renderer and says where it stops (#3120)
Export to Word, PowerPoint, HTML and RTF stopped at 12 nested forms and
4 096 forms a page and left the rest out silently. It now follows forms
50 deep, as the renderer does, and up to 50 000 a page (the renderer's
budget for nested paints), still bounded on hostile files.
doc_export_office lists pages past those limits in truncated_pages, with
a warning. New: reading_blocks_checked and export_office_checked;
reading_blocks and export_office keep their signatures.
Fixes#3120

* Tests: pin the form depth limit to the renderer's 50 (#3120)
The depth test built its chain from MAX_FORM_DEPTH, so it moved with the
constant. Write the renderer's limit out: depth 50 is read, depth 51 is
left out and reported. Fails with the constant at 49 and at 51.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
* Export: say which forms count toward the page limit (#3120)
The page budget also counts forms the page draws itself, which the
renderer does not charge, so a page can be reported as cut although the
viewer shows it. The warning and the tool description now say so.

* M6: a date typed without separators fills a yyyymmdd field
parse_date read each run of digits as one number, so 20261018 in a
yyyymmdd field was a single number with nothing left for the month and
the day, and the keystroke check refused it. Every date field on forms
that use the YYYYMMDD date format (US Army forms such as DA Form 31 among
them) refused every valid date.
order() now records each field's fixed width (4 for yyyy; 2 for yy, mm,
dd, HH, MM and ss) and whether the next field follows with nothing in
between. parse_date keeps runs of digits as text and splits a run between
such joined fields by those widths. Formats with separators, month names,
literal digits (dd.mm.26) and two-digit years behave as before.
A run of digits too long for a u32 used to be dropped silently, which let
"2026 99999999999" pass for yyyy; it is now read like any other number and
refused when it is left over or does not fit.
* chore(contributors): credit Eric Kaden by real name
* M6: separated runs of digits stay whole in a joined date format
With separators each run of digits is one field's number, as before this
branch: "2026-10-18" in a yymmdd field reads the year 2026, where the
first commit split the run into 20 and 26 and refused the date. A run is
now split between joined fields only when fewer runs were typed than the
fields still to fill, so "2610" and "261018" still split.
* M6: what is left of a split run of digits fills its field exactly
"202610018" in a yyyymmdd field split off 2026 and 10 and read the rest,
018, as day 18, so a nine-digit date passed. The rest of a split run now
has to be its field's width; a number typed on its own ("2026 10 018")
keeps its leeway.
* M6: a number typed on its own is split only when its rest fills the next field
The optional time fields of a format like yyyymmddHHMM counted as fields
still to fill, so "2026 10 018" split the day 018 into 01 and 8 and was
refused; on main the time defaults to 00:00. A run typed on its own is
now split only when what is left can fill the next field; the rest of a
run that was already split is split as before.
* M6: describe the undelimited-date tests without naming one form
The tests and their comments now say what they check (fields written side by side, such as yyyymmdd) instead of naming the form that showed the problem, and use a generic field label.
* M6: count date and time fields apart when deciding to split a run
Optional time fields counted towards the fields still to fill, so
"2026-10-18" in a yymmddHHMM field split the year into 20 and 26 and was
refused, where main reads it with the time left out. A run typed on its
own is now matched against the fields of its own kind: date runs against
date fields, time runs against time fields. What is left of a split run
goes on being split along the fields written side by side, so
"20261018143005" still fills yyyymmddHHMMss. A mix such as
"2026 1018 1430" (year apart, month and day joined, then a time) is still
refused, as on main.

The calendar took its month once, when it opened, so a date typed while
it was open showed only after leaving the field and coming back. It now
moves to a date as soon as the text becomes one, and stays on the month
it shows while the text is half typed or unchanged, so its arrows still
turn the months.
A CAC puts its encryption, logon and signing certificates in the store
under the same name, so the digital ID list showed several identical
entries and only one of them makes a signature that validates. Grey out
the ones whose key usage or extended key usage doesn't allow document
signing, with the reason, the same way an ID without a usable key is
already treated.

* M4: Ctrl-drag copies pages in the Organize grid (#2997)
Dragging thumbnails in the Organize page grid with Ctrl held (Option on
macOS) drops copies at the gap instead of moving the pages: a "+" badge
by the pointer, the copies land at the gap selected, and one undo step
takes them out. The insertion point joins the engine edit
(Edit::DuplicatePages { at }) so the copy is one undo step rather than a
duplicate plus a move.
page_duplicate takes a 1-based "at" (the first copy becomes page "at"),
so agents can drive the same thing, and the UI control channel's
ui.drag modifiers now reach the input state -- which gestures that read
it (this copy-drag, and Alt-drag column select) need.
Closes#2997.
* fix(ui): take the grid's copy modifier from the runtime OS (#3092 review)
Option-drag in the Organize grid moved the pages instead of copying them in a Mac
browser: `cfg!(target_os = "macos")` is false in the wasm build, and eframe sets the
context's OS from the browser. `copy_modifier` now takes the context and asks
`commands::mac_shortcuts`, as the shortcut labels do.
The drag helpers in `tests/editing.rs` and `tests/control.rs` picked the modifier the
same compile-time way, so they would have sent Ctrl on a Mac host; both read the
context's OS now. The new regression test
`option_copies_and_ctrl_moves_when_the_context_reports_macos` drives a Mac context —
Ctrl moves, Option copies — and fails without this change.
crates/cos/src/document.rs: both new accessors, header_offset (#2525) and reconstructed (#2029).
parity/acrobat-features.toml: the malformed-xref entry has both sides' evidence and notes (#2029 full save of a repaired file, #2717 table numbered from 1).
* M4: custom document properties through the engine and the tools (#organize.custom-properties)
/Info entries beyond the ones the spec names are custom properties:
organize lists them (custom_info) and set_info accepts any such name
after Acrobat's checks (no standard name, no empty name, no spaces,
delimiters, / or #, at most 127 bytes); inspection lists them too
(DocInfo::custom); doc_info reports them under custom and doc_set_info
sets or clears them. The Custom tab in Document Properties and the XMP
mirror stay planned.

* M4: custom document properties list the same before and after an edit
Review follow-up. The open-time reader (render/inspect.rs) now uses the
engine's rule (pdfcraft_organize::custom_info, trimmed, empty values
dropped): text strings only, NUL/whitespace trimmed, empty values left out,
and the 256 cap counting listed entries. Before, it also listed name
values (`/Dept /RnD`) and capped before filtering, so the list could change
after the first unrelated edit. An automation test opens a file with a name
value, blank, NUL-padded, empty and numeric entries and checks doc_info's
custom list is the same before and after setting the Title.
Drops the ROADMAP.md log line, which conflicted with main.

* M4: custom properties drop NUL/whitespace padding in one pass, before the cap
Review follow-up. custom_info now trims NULs and whitespace in any mix
(" \0Lab\0 " is "Lab"), leaves out values that are only padding, and does
both before taking 256, so blank entries can't crowd real ones out. It is
the one rule: the engine uses it as it is, and the open-time reader trims
the same way. Tests: 300 blank entries before a real one, and mixed
padding, in organize and through doc_info.

* fix(engine): Save writes a repaired file in full even without edits (#1937)
A damaged file is repaired on open (its cross-reference index rebuilt from
object headers, as Document Properties reports), but Save wrote it back as it
was: `Session::save_bytes` returned the bytes as opened whenever nothing was
edited, and a repair is not an edit. The "repaired" file on disk was still the
damaged one.
`save_bytes` now writes a reconstructed document in full even with no edits.
`Document::reconstructed()` in cos names the condition (no revision chain:
rebuilt, or built from scratch), and `write_incremental` uses it too, so the
writer and the engine share one definition.
Tests: `engine::tests::a_repaired_file_is_rewritten_by_save_even_without_edits`
(table offsets shifted; no table at all) and
`automation::saving_a_repaired_file_puts_the_repair_on_disk` (doc_open,
doc_info, doc_save over the same path, reopen). Both fail with the condition
removed: the saved bytes equal the damaged file. parity: core.repair-broken-files
cites them and notes that a repair still does not count as an unsaved change.

* fix(engine): a signed repaired file keeps its bytes on Save without edits (#1937)
Review follow-up: writing a reconstructed file in full on Save puts the
repair on disk, but for a signed file it would also invalidate its
signatures without warning. Save now skips the early return only when the
document is reconstructed and not signed. A regression test signs a
document, appends a `startxref` that points nowhere (the signed bytes stay
intact, the cross-reference data must be rebuilt) and checks that Save
without edits returns those bytes.

Fixes#1645. For a dynamic XFA form, `info` reported the placeholder
page and field counts, and `text` and `render` read the placeholder
pages, while the app and the automation tools lay the template out.
The CLI now opens dynamic XFA forms through the engine session and uses
its laid-out document for page and field metadata, text and pixels.
`info` keeps the input's file size and also reports the original counts
as `pdf_pages` and `acroform_fields`; `text` checks the copy permission
before extracting. The input file is never written.

In a region that mixes sizes (a 24 pt title over 12 pt lines), the
inline editor's caret on a small row was as tall as the region's first
size and reached into the row below. egui draws the caret at least one
row of the TextEdit's font tall, and that font had the paragraph's first

Field detection read a path as a rectangle only when it had exactly four
corners, and gave up on a subpath once it reached five points. The French
income tax form 2042 draws its letter cells with a midpoint on each
vertical side (six points), so most of its cells were not found.
A subpath now keeps up to 16 points, and a point lying on a straight side
between its neighbours is dropped before the four-corner test. A point
that turns back along a side is not between its neighbours and stays, so
a path that doubles back is still not a box.

The Hand tool scrolled by the page widget's drag delta from inside the
page view's ScrollArea. egui applies that delta when the area ends, after
the frame's pages are laid out and drawn, so the page showed each move a
frame late and trailed behind the pointer. (Until the page view stopped
animating its scrolls, the delta was also eased in over several frames,
which is the stutter #924 and #1992 describe.) On top of that, the points
the pointer moved before egui tells a drag from a click were dropped, so
the page never caught up with the grab point.
Pan before the area lays the pages out instead: when the page widget is
being dragged with the Hand tool, set the scroll offset from the last
offset minus this frame's pointer delta, or minus everything moved since
the press on the frame the drag is recognised. The page now moves point
for point with the pointer in the frame it moves, and still stops where
it is let go (no fling). Other scrolls (go to page, links, zoom anchors,
compare sync) are untouched and still win when asked for in the same
frame.
Observed in Acrobat Pro on the public ISCIII form: the once-only page keeps
its place when printing (7 pages with nothing typed) but is printed blank.
PdfCraft draws its content, and has no relevant attribute or print-off
layer yet; the note says so.
A page area with <occur min="1" max="1"> that the body never reached was
never laid out, so the public ISCIII form lost the page that holds its
finishing instructions and the TERMINAR MEMORIA button once the repeated
copies over the body pages were removed.
PageArea records occur min (0 without an <occur>). When the body has been
laid out, an area used fewer times than its minimum gets the pages it still
needs, in template order, after the body's pages. The form is 7 pages with
the once-only page last, which is what Acrobat Pro shows.
