Nikon bodies from before ~2016 record no CropArea, so the decoder kept
their whole sensor data, less trailing dark columns. Where that data
holds masked lines above black or optical black, they were developed as
a coloured or dark bar on that edge: the D7000 and D5100's 36 columns at
~600 (#976), the D800's 14 (#914, the top in portrait), and others.

MEASURED_BODIES (crates/raw/src/vendor/nef.rs) now gives 36 model /
data size / depth groups the frame of their camera JPEG inside the data:
D7000, D5100, D800, D800E, Df, the D4's 12-bit mode, D3, D3S, D700,
D300, D300S, D600, D610, D810, D4S, D5600, Coolpix A, D3000, D40X, D60,
D80 and D2Xs. An entry matches model, data size and depth exactly; the
measured white level becomes optional (only the D4's 14-bit mode has
one). Bodies whose data holds only picture beyond the camera frame get
no entry and render as before.

`cargo xtask raw-frame FILE...` (crates/engine/examples/raw_frame.rs)
measures a body: it aligns each raw's embedded camera JPEG with the
sensor data (half-size luminance, gradient correlation, sub-pixel peak;
weak, ambiguous or between-pixel peaks are flagged), counts the edge
lines that hold no picture and reports what the decoder's crop keeps
beyond the camera frame. It prints entries only with evidence: at least
3 clean files agreeing exactly, of the model (12- and 14-bit pooled) or,
with at least one of its own, with sibling models of the same readout
(data and JPEG size) that agree on the same frame. On the D7500, which
records its CropArea, it finds that area exactly; it declines the Z f,
whose JPEG is distortion-corrected.
It works for any make whose raw embeds a full-size camera JPEG: on
Sony, Canon CR2 / CR3, Pentax and Samsung files it finds the decoder's
own crop (relative to the active area).

docs/nikon-bodies.md surveys every Nikon raw on raw.pixls.us (98
models, 291 files; 138 CC0 samples measured): 22 models record
CropArea; of the 88 groups without it, 36 have entries, 13 are fine, 25
could not be aligned and 7 do not decode. The D3200, D3100, D200, D50,
D750 and Nikon 1 V1 / V2 are pending, each listed with the files it
needs; the doc also describes how to add a body. raw-parity.md no
longer claims every NEF coding but HE decodes.
measured_bodies_are_consistent checks every entry lies inside its data
and is listed once.

The evidence is committed in docs/nikon-bodies/: headers.json (every
file's raw size, depth and maker-note crop tags), samples.json (the 138
measured CC0 files with URL and sha256) and frames.jsonl (the tool's
per-file results). `cargo xtask corpus --download nikon` fetches the
samples (sha256 checked) so `cargo xtask raw-frame` reproduces every
count.

# Nikon bodies: sensor data, image area and edge bands

Nikon raws hold more sensor data than the picture: a few lines of extra picture around the camera's own frame and,
on many bodies, optical black or masked lines that are not picture at all. Newer bodies record the picture's area in
the maker note (`CropArea`, 0x0045) and LightCraft crops to it. Older ones record nothing, so the decoder keeps the
whole data (less trailing dark columns), and masked lines inside it are developed as a coloured or dark bar on that
edge ([#976](https://github.com/storytold/lightcraft/issues/976), [#914](https://github.com/storytold/lightcraft/issues/914)).
Such a body gets an entry in `MEASURED_BODIES` (`crates/raw/src/vendor/nef.rs`): the frame of its camera JPEG inside
the data, applied only to that model, data size and sample depth. Bodies whose data holds only picture beyond the
camera frame get no entry and render as before.
## Summary

Bodies whose crop keeps lines without picture but that lack the evidence for an entry (see *Adding a body*). Each
needs more files with detail across the frame, from raw.pixls.us or contributed (any licence: only the measurement
is committed, never the file).

## Adding a body
1. Gather files of the body: several per data size, with detail across the frame (a blank sky, fog or a lens cap
has nothing to align on), shot with in-camera distortion control off.
2. Run `cargo xtask raw-frame FILE…`. It prints, per model and data size, how many files align cleanly on the same
frame and, once there is enough evidence, the `MeasuredBody` lines.
3. Evidence: at least 3 clean files that agree exactly, either of the model itself (12- and 14-bit pooled: both
read out the same area), or at least one of its own plus *siblings*, other models with the same readout (data
size and JPEG size) whose own files agree on the same frame. The same data size alone is not enough: the D200
and D80 share 3904 × 2616 data but frame it at (16, 12) and (14, 9).
4. Add an entry only when the decoder's crop keeps lines without picture (*edge bands* and *beyond the camera frame*
in the tool's output), paste it into `MEASURED_BODIES` with a comment naming the evidence, and update this file.
`measured_bodies_are_consistent` checks every entry lies inside its data and is listed once.
## How this survey was made, and how to reproduce it
The evidence is committed next to this file, in [`nikon-bodies/`](nikon-bodies/):
- [`headers.json`](nikon-bodies/headers.json): every Nikon raw on raw.pixls.us (index of 2026-10-11, 291 files) with its
URL, sha256, raw image size, depth and compression and the maker note's `CropArea`, `CropHiSpeed` and
`NEFCompression`, read from the first 1 MB of each file.
- [`samples.json`](nikon-bodies/samples.json): the 138 CC0 files measured: one per model, data size and depth without
`CropArea`, and every other CC0 sample of the groups that showed lines without picture (URL and sha256 each).
- [`frames.jsonl`](nikon-bodies/frames.jsonl): `cargo xtask raw-frame --json` on those files: frame, score, margin,
edge bands and what the decoder's crop keeps beyond the frame.

The first `raw-frame` prints each group's verdict and `MeasuredBody` entries; the counts in the tables above are its
output. Only CC0 files are listed; the D4's 14-bit entry comes from its contributor's own measurement. The statuses
above reflect the decoder with this file's entries.
