* CI: dev profile keeps line tables for workspace crates and no debug info for dependencies
* Control server tests: persistent_requests_and_slow_replies_outlive_the_idle_read_timeout no longer races the idle timeout
Each request (and the closing half-shutdown) reaches the socket before the
worker reads, so on a slow machine only the reply waits outlast the 100 ms
idle timeout, as the test intends. The idle test sends its input the same
way, and the no-frames test allows 5 s instead of 2 s to give up.
* CI: one integration-test binary per crate
Each crate's tests/*.rs become modules of tests/it/main.rs (51 test files
into 13 binaries, plus 6 that stay their own). Inner #![cfg] attributes
move to the mod lines. Files that change state for the whole process keep
a binary of their own: codecs jxl_tail_heap and raw sr2_heap (dhat global
allocator), gpu shutdown, shutdown_first and memory, ui-egui shutdown.
Docs, comments and the GPU probe name the new paths and targets
(--test it <module>::); the CI report names an it binary's skips after
the crate.
* CI: tests under nextest, doctests apart, one wasm check
xtask ci runs the tests with cargo nextest run --lib --bins --tests when
cargo-nextest is installed, else cargo test with the same targets and a
one-line notice; doctests run after them with cargo test --workspace --doc.
The heif and hardware GPU steps use the same runner. Examples stay out of
the test build (clippy --all-targets still checks them). Concurrent tests
under nextest follow the RUST_TEST_THREADS cap (NEXTEST_TEST_THREADS).
The wasm check is one cargo check --keep-going over the same crates, and
clippy runs with --keep-going.
* CI: tests run under cargo test by default, nextest with LIGHTCRAFT_NEXTEST=1 (per-process scene cache)
Lightroom's Resize to Fit has two boxes: Dimensions (the larger number to
the long edge, whichever way round the photo is) and Width & Height (the
width limited to W and the height to H as the photo stands). LightCraft
had only the first, labelled "Width × Height". Add `ResizeMode::WidthHeight`,
`fit: widthHeight` beside `width` + `height` in app.export, the mode in the
Export dialog (the old one is now called Dimensions), and the docs.

The connect-mode MCP client accepted any newline-less or wrong-id reply as
the answer to its request. Require a complete newline-terminated reply of
at most 64 MiB, the matching integer id, boolean ok and a result or string
error; otherwise close the connection and report an unknown outcome without
resending. Idless pre-dispatch refusals from the control server still work.

Wake the serving loop after protocol output fails and preserve the actual writer error. Use one process-owned stdin worker so the CLI can finish normal backend cleanup without waiting for client EOF, and terminate the output worker even when a progress hook is retained.

A raw imported while its format couldn't be decoded kept preview_only until a
manual Reload, so new decoders in a release never reached existing photos.
When a library opens in another app version, its preview-only photos whose
stamp differs are probed again in the background and get exactly what Reload
from Disk gives them (shared reload_ops): a file that decodes now loses the
flag, one that still doesn't gets the current reason and a fresh stamp. The
result is one journaled system batch, not an undo step; develop settings and
history are kept. Unreadable files are left for next time, photos changed
while probing are skipped, and a result for a library closed meanwhile is
dropped. A toast says how many raws now develop from their raw data.
- engine: cmd/recheck.rs (stale / probe / apply) and
library.recheckPreviewOnly {all?} -> {checked, updated, cleared}; refused
without file access, where every probe would clear every flag
- desktop: recheck::tick once per library generation, through tasks::spawn
("Checking raw files" in the activity stack)
- the preview-only notice (Edit, Info) gains a Reload from Disk button
- strings translated in all nine catalogs; docs/mcp.md and the parity row

Photos imported before focus points were read got one only through Reload from Disk, which
hashes whole files on the UI thread. Now:
- lightcraft_meta::focus::read_header reads only what the decoder looks at: IFD0 (Make,
Model), the Exif IFD, the maker note's IFD and the focus tags' values (a JPEG: its segments
up to the Exif one), walked round by round and decoded with the whole-file code from a
buffer of the file's length holding just those ranges. Bounded rounds, bytes (2 MB) and
size (1 GB). One 32 KB read per α1 / A7S III ARW; on 109 real files (83 with a point)
it gives the whole-file read's point for every one.
- A background job (crates/engine/src/focus_scan.rs) reads photos with no point from a
supported body (by the stored camera; nothing else is opened), ARW or JPEG, one at a
time in path order, with a "Reading focus points" activity row (Cancel::Flag). The UI's
per-frame focus.pump gives it the face scan's pace (paused while dragging or typing) and
starts it once per library opening. Commits every 200 photos or 3 s as system ops (no
undo step, no sidecar write), only meta.focus, only on photos that still have none at the
same path. "Looked, none" goes to focus-scanned.bin beside the library, headed by the
decoder's tag so a decoder knowing more bodies starts afresh; unreadable files are retried
at the next opening.
- photo.readFocusPoints {ids?, wait?} (Photo > Read Focus Points) runs it on demand.
Measured cold on a 5400 rpm USB drive: 200 α1 / A7S III ARWs in 1.9 s (~100 photos/s,
32 KB each), so 58,796 raws take about 10 minutes instead of re-reading 2.25 TB.
Read the autofocus point from Sony maker notes (FocusLocation 0x2027, FocusFrameSize
0x2037, FocusMode 0x201b, AFAreaModeSetting 0x201c, AFTracking 0x2021 and the area mode
used from the enciphered 0x9402 block), for the ILCE-1 and ILCE-7SM3, whose layout was
checked against ExifTool's output on 333 real ARWs. Manual focus, centre-only Multi
reports and unchecked bodies give no point. The box is stored on the upright photo as
Meta.focus (omitted when unknown; no catalog format change), filled at import and by
Reload from Disk.
View > Show Focus Point (Alt+F) draws it in Detail, Compare and Survey through rotation
and crop; View > Zoom to Focus Point (on by default) makes Toggle Zoom centre on it; the
Info panel shows "AF-C · Wide · Animal Eye Tracking". photo.inspect returns meta.focus.
Document polling of selection/settings/control ranges and shared edit
interactions. Clarify explicit-photo reads, empty selection and navigation,
and correct photo-tool ID descriptions and MCP initialization guidance.
Partial documentation work for issue 251;
hardware feedback remains outside this change.

View > Export Slideshow... (and Export PDF / JPEG / Video in Settings >
Slideshow) writes the photos in view as their composed slides, between
the intro and ending screens that are on:
- PDF: a page per slide (1024/1920/3840 px long side, JPEG quality),
/Dur and /Trans fades per page, optional /PageMode /FullScreen. The
contact sheet's writer moves to engine/src/pdf.rs and streams to disk.
- JPEG: <name>-001.jpg... in a folder.
- Video: AV1 (rav1e, speed 10, low latency) in MP4 or WebM written by
our own muxers (codecs/src/video.rs); fades rendered as blended frames,
held slides one key-frame sample with a long duration; 720p/1080p,
24/30 fps; no audio; capped at 2 hours.
slideshow.export runs in the background with a row in the activity
stack (activity.cancel stops it); outputs are written as .part and
renamed when complete, so cancel or failure leaves nothing behind. A
photo that can't be rendered is skipped with a warning.
slideshow.exportStatus reports the result.
A slideshow template is the Playback (not "prepare previews"), Layout /
Options / Backdrop, Overlays and Titles settings as one versioned JSON
document (format lightcraft.slideshowTemplate, version 1).
- Engine: slide_template (SlideLook, Template, built-ins, user template
files in <settings>/slideshow-templates read through each section's own
merged() validation; size and count caps; newer versions refused; bad
files reported and skipped; file names sanitised so ids never leave the
folder). Applying replaces the four settings in one step and keeps the
replaced ones as "previous" for the session (prefs have no undo).
- Five built-ins of our own: Plain Black, Gallery Wall, Edge to Edge,
Cinema Wide, Shooting Data (no Lightroom names or designs, no images).
- Commands slideshow.templates.list/apply/save/update/rename/delete/
import/export; slideshow.preview {template} previews without applying.
- UI: Template Browser at the top of Settings > Slideshow (built-in, user,
previous settings; click applies, hover previews on the selected photo,
right-click update / rename / export / delete; save and import), file
dialogs on the desktop; strings in the nine locales.
- Docs: parity row (partial), whats-new, control protocol and MCP.
Rebased onto the activity stack (#601). An export adding its files to
Photos keeps its row through that step, with "Adding to Apple Photos…" as
the detail. The worker turns the row's ✕ off (TaskHandle::set_cancellable)
before its last look at the cancel flag and reports what it saw, so a
cancel either stops the export before Photos is asked or is refused, never
both "cancelled" and imported. activity: a per-task gate orders a cancel's
decision against a step switching cancelling off, so a cancel can't be
accepted between the switch and the step's look at the flag and then be
ignored. An import of its own (export.addToPhotos, or
the Photos step left running after a foreground app.export) holds a row of
kind applePhotos while Photos works: no ✕, no count, the album as detail.
The desktop app refuses export.addToPhotos {wait: true}: its window's
thread never waits for Photos. The label is in every catalog; tests assert
the rows, the refused cancel and the refused wait.

The Export dialog gets "Add to Apple Photos" with an optional album (macOS
only). app.export takes addToPhotos / photosAlbum (dialog, Export with
Previous, presets, MCP, lightcraft-cli run and render --opt); the new
export.addToPhotos {paths, album?, wait?} adds files already on disk and
export.photosImports {job?} reports how imports went.
A constant AppleScript run by /usr/bin/osascript asks Photos' import
command (Apple Events, not synthetic input) to import the files into a
top-level album of exactly that name (made when missing; albums in folders
are never used; several of that name: refused), skip check duplicates
false, and returns the media item ids. Album names and paths are passed
only as separate arguments (on run argv), never spliced into the script.
The runner is injectable (Session::apple_photos): with_fs installs the real
one on macOS only, and tests use fakes, so no test starts osascript or
Photos.
Imports are jobs (Session::apple_photos_imports), one at a time. The
desktop app (Session::apple_photos_background, set in open_session) never
waits for Photos on its UI thread: the background export adds on its
worker, app.export without background and export.addToPhotos answer with
the running job, and the app announces the outcome. Without a window (MCP,
lightcraft-cli) imports wait by default, and both headless front ends (the
MCP/CLI backend and the snapshot UI) wait for a running one before the
process ends, on every exit path, through one engine helper
(Session::wait_for_photos_imports) whose deadline follows the job: a
writing allowance while an export still writes, then the import's own
time limit from when Photos was asked, under an overall cap. A runner that panics, waiting or on a
worker, ends its import as failed and frees the slot (panic guard plus a
completion guard). Session::after_export reserves
the import slot before an export writes anything and frees it on every
exit path (handed the files, cancelled, failed, dropped), so a competing
import is refused with the export's job number instead of the export
failing its Photos step after writing. Permission (-1743), missing Photos,
cancel, timeouts, ambiguous albums, busy imports, other osascript failures
and partial imports produce actionable messages; the export's files are
kept either way. Hidden on other platforms; the web build compiles it out.
Packaging: the hardened-runtime entitlements gain
com.apple.security.automation.apple-events (app and CLI) and Info.plist
gains NSAppleEventsUsageDescription, without which macOS refuses the
events without asking.
Not yet tested end to end against a real Photos library: manual steps,
with the packaged app, in docs/apple-photos.md. Parity row LR-EXP-PHOTOS is
now partial.

Intro and ending title screens (Lightroom Classic's Titles panel): each on
or off, a background colour and, centred, the Overlays identity plate or a
line of text, in the plate's colour or an override colour, at a scale, for
its own duration (default: the slide duration).
- Playback timeline: titles are items (Item::Title) of Playback; the intro
plays once before the first photo, the ending after the last photo when
repeat is off; random order never moves them; arrows step across them;
fades, pause and readiness work as for slides; n of N counts photos only.
- Engine: slide_title (TitleSettings in prefs.json, TitleCompose drawing
through the slide composer and overlay text renderer), slideshow.titles
get/set, slideshow.preview {title}.
- UI: titles composed on a render worker (Renderer::request_title), the
control bar shows Intro / End, Settings > Slideshow > Titles section and
a Photo / Intro / Ending preview choice; strings in the nine locales.
- Docs: parity row (partial), playback note, whats-new, control and MCP.
- Engine: slide_overlay (OverlaySettings in prefs.json, the new slideshow.overlays
command): identity plate (text, or a PNG/JPEG file with its transparency; size,
colour, opacity; render behind image), rating stars (own vector stars), up to 16
text overlays with tokens ({caption}, {exposure}, {file}, {date}, {focal}… plus
every rename token; unknown tags show as typed and are reported) and a drop
shadow, each at one of nine anchors of the slide or photo plus an offset, kept on
the slide; the export watermark on the photo. Sizes relative to the slide's
shorter side; validated and clamped.
- Drawn by the engine as a second pass over lightcraft_slideshow::compose_with
(new behind hook for "render behind image"); the watermark's text renderer moved
to engine text.rs (TextLayout, Inter + craft-fonts CJK) and is shared; glyphs
off the image are skipped so huge text stays cheap.
- rename::expand_tokens_with lets overlays add tokens without changing rename.
- Playback composes slides when overlays are on; slideshow.preview returns each
overlay's box. Settings > Slideshow > Overlays section with live preview.
- Docs: parity row (partial), whats-new, control/MCP docs, nine locale catalogs.
- Tests: tokens, nine anchors, star count, plate image opacity and missing file,
text shadow, resolution independence, hostile input, big-slide cost, CJK with
craft-fonts, prefs persistence, preview and headless playback pixel checks.
- New crate lightcraft-slideshow (L1, no UI): SlideSettings (margins linked or
independent, guides, aspect preview, zoom to fill, stroke border, cast shadow,
backdrop colour, colour wash, background image; lengths relative to the slide's
shorter side; validated and clamped) and a CPU compose() used by playback, the
Settings preview and slideshow.preview.
- Engine: slideshow.layout (partial merge, saved in prefs.json) and
slideshow.preview {id?, width?, height?, path?} (PNG to path or base64);
RenderJob::with_slide composes on the render worker; the background photo is
rendered once and shared.
- Playback: with a non-default layout each slide is the composed screen-sized
slide, prepared ahead like before; the default layout plays as before.
- Settings > Slideshow: Layout, Options and Backdrop sections and a debounced
live preview of the active photo's slide (with margin guides).
- Tests: composer geometry/pixels/hostile input, command get/set/persist/preview,
headless playback of a composed slide and of the default layout.
Export as JPEG XL from the dialog, CLI, MCP and control channel (format jxl): lossy with
quality or lossless, 8/16-bit, effort fast/normal, progressive, EXIF/XMP boxes; HDR edits
as 16-bit Rec. 2020 PQ. Encoder: jixel (pure Rust, BSD-3-Clause OR Apache-2.0, native
only: it spawns its own threads), wrapped in catch_unwind. Lossy files declare an enum
encoding (sRGB / P3 / Rec. 2020; Adobe RGB and ProPhoto written as Rec. 2020); lossless
files embed the ICC profile.
Decoder fix: jxl-oxide desaturated colours outside sRGB when rendering XYB images to
wider primaries; lossy wide-gamut JXL now renders to linear sRGB primaries and is
converted to Rec. 2020 here. jixel's slowest effort is left out: jxl-oxide misdecodes
its (valid) files.

Raws without matrices in the file (ARW, NEF, RW2, RAF, CR2, CR3, PEF, SRW,
ORF) were all edited on the relative white-balance scale (6500 K / 0 = as
shot), even when lightcraft_raw::spectral has measured matrices for the
camera. Those 52 bodies (ILCE-7M3, ILCE-7M4, D850, EOS 5D Mark III...) now
edit in Kelvin like a DNG and like Lightroom.
Design:
- One decision on both sides: spectral::find_camera("Make Model") backs
catalog::relative_wb_camera (Photo::relative_wb); files::WbScaleOf decides
the same from the decoded file. A corpus test asserts they agree.
Photo::fitted_look keeps the old predicate for smart previews.
- The matrices only convert: As Shot is the file's multipliers read through
the model's ColorMatrix1/2 (spectral::as_shot_white_through). The look
(JPEG fit / profile / spectral fallback) is unchanged, and the slider
adapts from that white with Bradford. The camera-space rebalance stays
reserved for files with their own matrices.
- Presets resolve to their Kelvin values (WbMode::preset, sources cited).
- The Color panel shows the white balance in effect (effective_wb).
- XMP: crs::Target::for_file takes the camera; matrix cameras read
crs:Temperature as Kelvin (marked "scale": "kelvin"), others keep the
#510 as-shot shift.
Migration (no look changes):
- WhiteBalance.scale: WbScale { Legacy (absent in JSON), Kelvin }. A
white balance without a scale keeps its old meaning. On a spectral-Kelvin
raw (SourceInfo.legacy_relative_wb) the pipeline composes the old
adaptation (6500 -> value) with the new one (as shot -> ...) in Bradford
cone space (local::legacy_white). Von Kries scalings compose exactly, so
the matrix matches to f32 and the pixels are identical
(pipeline legacy_relative_white_balance_renders_as_before_on_a_kelvin_raw,
media old_relative_white_balance_on_a_kelvin_camera_keeps_its_look...).
- Every white-balance writer (develop.set/adjust/quickAdjust/wb/wbPick/
reset) first runs local::normalize_wb: a legacy value becomes the Custom
Kelvin value with the same look and is marked Kelvin. Partials without a
scale (old presets, develop.merge) stay legacy.
- Catalog format 7: Op::SetAsShotWb replaces the 6500/0 as-shot recorded
by older imports when the file is next decoded or reloaded (system op,
not an undo step). Format-version test updated.
- The web wire carries legacy_relative_wb.
Docs: parity (LR-EDIT-COLOR-TEMP), camera-preview-colour, xmp-interop,
lightroom-catalog-import, control-protocol, mcp, whats-new.
