The French column of the shared table repeated the English text on 1,217 rows; they now carry a French translation (60 rows stay identical on purpose: format names, Japanese composition terms, words French shares with English). Strings the shared table has no row for (248, already translated in ja/it/ar) go in a new i18n/fr.rs, looked up before the shared column, as ja.rs is. Keys of fr.rs and of the shared table are disjoint, so cached_lookup_preserves_every_translation_across_language_switches still holds by construction.
Checking a linked text file's status (every links.list, which the
Links panel polls) compared sizes and then read the whole file, so a
link to a FIFO or a device such as /dev/zero (size 0) never returned.
Only regular files are read now, and no more than the Data Merge
source limit (256 MiB): anything else shows as missing; a file over
the limit shows as modified when its size changed and as tooLarge
("Too large to check") when it didn't. Update and Relink read through
the same guard, and placing a file too large to check doesn't link it.
Unix test: a FIFO, /dev/zero, a folder and an over-limit file each
return promptly without being read (each call runs on a thread with a
timeout, so a regression fails instead of hanging). Thanks @aiongg.

A character attribute strokeBehindFill paints a text stroke under the fill
at double width, so its full weight lies outside the letters and they keep
their shape. Screen and PNG rendering, PDF export (stroke as outlines
first, then the filled text, so the text is not duplicated; clipped to the
outside of the glyphs when there is no fill), Create Outlines (outside-
aligned stroke), the Properties panel and Character Style Options.
IDML StrokeAlignment on CharacterStyleRange, CharacterStyle and
ParagraphStyle imports and exports as the attribute (OutsideAlignment =
on, CenterAlignment = off).
Malayalam took the first installed file mapping it: on macOS Arial Unicode MS, which has no Malayalam shaping, so conjuncts like ക്ഷ fell apart. Fonts made for Malayalam are tried first, loaded on demand through the CJK chain lookup.
Paragraphs with w:numPr, directly or through their paragraph style, become
bullet or numbered paragraphs: Word's number formats, label text, start
numbers and overrides, level restarts, the text after the label and the
level's indents. Parent levels in a label are written as text. Unreadable or
hostile list definitions leave plain paragraphs.
Route AppKit termination through the existing unsaved-document close transaction using the immutable winit patch. Restore pending prompts from hidden or minimized windows and preserve answers across repeated requests.
Validation: all six local gates, native cancellation/retry/save smoke, and hosted platform checks.

PR #623.
The scan now reads crates/*/src instead of only the engine, and flags fs::
after use std::fs or use std::{fs, ...}, std::fs, File::open/create,
OpenOptions, direct atomic writes and the Path probes (metadata,
symlink_metadata, canonicalize, read_dir, try_exists, exists, is_file, is_dir,
read_link). The files it leaves out are listed with the reason for each, and a
second test fails when an entry no longer needs its exception.
Rebased onto the atomic save work: book chapter replacement, canonicalize and
the writability probe, and every command write now check the roots before
they reach crate::atomic. IDML import no longer reads linked images itself
(the engine passes its checked reader), load_icc_file is gone (profiles
arrive as bytes), the script loader goes through the host reader, and
FontDb::load_document_fonts asks a caller-supplied check about the folder and
each font file, so a link that leads out of the read root is skipped.
With the Type tool, Option/Alt+Left/Right with a caret changes the manual kerning of the pair at the caret by the Kerning/Tracking increment (a new document preference, 20/1000 em by default, in Preferences > Units & Increments); with a selection it changes the tracking of the selected text. Cmd (Ctrl on Windows and Linux) multiplies the step by five. A pair without manual kerning starts from 0. The new type.kernStep command does the work, one undo step per press.
Moving by words is Cmd+Left/Right on macOS and Ctrl+Left/Right on Windows and Linux; Option/Alt+Shift+Left/Right still extends the selection by words. Fixes#621.
Autoflow on Place threads one frame per page column (right to left in a right-to-left story) and adds pages until the story fits; a frame the user drew or selected stays as it is, and later columns of its page are filled when it sits in one. Empty frames autoflow made at the end of the thread are removed. Pages Smart Text Reflow adds get a primary frame with the page's columns, and it removes trailing pages that hold only empty frames of the story. Fixes#625.
Selected type on a path shows its start and end brackets across the path,
as in InDesign, and the Selection and Direct Selection tools drag them
along it (Move Bracket, one undo step): the text starts and ends where
they are, and text past the end bracket is overset.
- doc: PathType.end (None: the path's end)
- geom: PathWarp::nearest, the arc length of the nearest point
- engine: type.pathOptions {end}; brackets stay on the path and can't cross
- compose: the line runs from the start to the end bracket
- idml: EndBracket read and written
- tools: Cursor::PathBracket

As in InDesign, the Pen over an end point of an open path (selected, or
under the pointer) shows a continue cursor; clicking it carries on drawing
that path, new anchors going on its subpath, and clicking its other end
closes it. Dragging from the end point first reshapes its direction
lines. From the first anchor the subpath is reversed first.
- engine: path.reverse (Object > Paths > Reverse Path), path.setAnchor;
path.appendAnchor and path.close take a subpath, and appendAnchor
refuses a closed subpath
- tools: Cursor::PenContinue

- layout.parents.edit takes `parent` (id, full name, or a prefix only one
parent has) and asks the canvas to fit that parent's spread; turning
editing on without one shows the first parent. The result names the
parent shown.
- Commands resolve parents by id, then full name, then a unique prefix.
Unknown or ambiguous names are errors, so a typo no longer clears a
page's parent; null or "[None]" clears it.
- Pages panel: only the row of the parent the canvas shows is selected;
rows, drag payloads and the Apply Parent menu carry the parent id.
Parent rows show rendered thumbnails of the parent spread, cached by
document revision like page thumbnails.
- Delete All Guides on a parent acts on the parent the canvas shows.

Fixes#603
In the frame a story ends in, Balance Columns lowers the bottom of the
columns after the last explicit column break as far as the text still
fits, reusing the bounded search that balances columns above spanning
paragraphs. Frames the text runs on from fill normally. Text Frame
Options gets a Balance Columns checkbox.
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/object.rs: object.fit's doc keeps next's text and adds the `axis` clause; test modules from both sides
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: kept next's input code (it sends the second press as Down with clicks: 2) and dropped the PR's release-time DoubleClick; the PR's UI test stays
Conflict: crates/tools/src/select.rs: the handle double-click joins next's second-press preamble, after the port checks and before editing text and the frame/content toggle (Down or DoubleClick with click_count 2 on a handle runs object.fit along fitting_axis); the DoubleClick arm stays empty; module doc from both
Conflict: crates/tools/src/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md: both sides
Height Only, Width Only, Height and Width and Keep Proportions frames fit
their text after every undoable command (same undo step) and after IDML
import, around the reference point, with minimum height/width and No Line
Breaks. Text Frame Options gains an Auto-Size section; IDML reads and writes
the minimum and no-line-break attributes. Applies to unthreaded frames and
the last frame of a thread; vertical frames and type on a path are left as
they are. (#180)
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs: the spec keeps next's pdfCrop boxes and loadCursor with the PR's width bound and placement precedence; the PR validates `width` earlier, so next's later want_w line goes; next's loadCursor branch stays
color.sample takes `matchFrom`: with no opaque image pixel under the point (an empty part of an image frame, a transparent pixel), it applies that object's attributes as object.matchAttributes does, in the same command; the tool passes the object under the pointer. sample_item and the tool walk shown_children(), so only a multi-state object's active state is sampled, and sample_item skips points outside the graphic's clipping path. object.matchAttributes's body is a function both commands share.
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/style.rs: object.color keeps next's apply_color, spec and enabled check (#84); takes the PR's color.sample (with next's enabled check), image_color_at and sample_item; drops the PR's color_swatch, color_items and has_text_or_selection; explicit `id`/`ids` win over a text selection in apply_color; the PR's tests follow next's caret behaviour (a caret takes the sampled colour for the next typing)
Conflict: crates/tools/src/tests.rs: both sides; the eyedropper test's Asset and Graphic literals gain next's pdf_crop, pdf_box, clip and wrap fields
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs, i18n/{ar,it,ja,pt_br,uk}.rs, ROADMAP.md: both sides
Conflict: crates/engine/src/tooling.rs: every with_ctx caller (IME preedit, commit, end, caret) takes the PR's `|s, cx| s.tool.…` form; pointer keeps next's end_composition before dispatch and tool_key its composing() early return
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: the cursor block takes `space` from navigation_space, then the zoom branch, then `(space && !cmd) || alt_text`; the spring-zoom pointer events carry next's `clicks`; the PR's tests name their button helper `press` (next's tests have a `primary`) and compare cursors with what cursors::show sets for the engine cursor (next paints or rasterizes cursors per platform)
Conflict: ROADMAP.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md: status lines list both sides; progress and change-log rows keep both
winit 0.30.13 mishandles WM_DPICHANGED during a live drag on Windows 11:
the window flips between the two scales and grows past the GPU surface
limit. Pin winit to the one commit of rust-windowing/winit#4694, its
0.30.x backport of the fix.
The device asks for the adapter's largest texture side instead of
eframe's fixed 8192, and an uncaptured wgpu error is logged instead of
panicking, so a window larger than the surface limit draws wrongly
until it shrinks rather than closing the app.
Illustrator, VectorCraft, Figma and Inkscape put copied objects on the
system clipboard as SVG markup. Pasting it now creates editable paths, as
InDesign does with Illustrator art: fills, strokes (weight, caps, joins,
dashes) and opacity come through as unnamed colours, groups stay groups,
text comes in as outlines, CSS pixels become points (0.75 pt/px) and the
art is centred in the view. One undo step; garbage is refused.
- engine: edit.pasteSvg {svg, spread?, at?}
- canvas: Ctrl/Cmd+V with SVG on the clipboard (not while typing)
- Edit > Paste with nothing copied here asks for the system clipboard
- control channel: ui.paste {text}
