How WordCraft looks and feels next to Word: ribbon, dialogs, panes, keyboard, mouse and touch.
Typing behaviour has its own checklist (typing-parity.md). All assets are our
own (AGENTS.md: no Microsoft iconography, ever).
Document title opens Rename Document; the account badge opens Options › General for user name and initials. Saved documents retain their format and refuse conflicting names; desktop renaming requires a filesystem that supports hard links. Web renaming changes the next download name. An unsaved document's name is only the name Save suggests: its Title property is left alone.
Dimension: ~65% (estimated), 59–92 h to full (the sum of the rows below; dialog depth is counted here, not under features).

| Ribbon tabs and groups | All Word tabs including contextual Table Design/Layout, Picture Format, Shape Format, Header & Footer, Equation, Outlining (Outline view, #493); ribbon overflow (#43, #129). Draw tab: Select, Eraser, Pen, Pencil, Highlighter with colour and thickness (#307); Lasso (drag to move, Delete, recolour), Add Pen gallery (right-click to remove), Ink to Shape (lines, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, polygons), Ink Replay with play/pause/rewind/forward bar (#395); missing: Ink to Math. The app opens on Home every launch, as in Word: the active tab is not restored between runs, but going File and back to the editor returns to the tab that was showing, contextual tabs included. Home › Font: the font box lists Recently Used Fonts (the fonts applied from the box, the mini toolbar or the Font dialog, most recent first, ten at most, kept between runs) above All Fonts, as in Word; the sections show while nothing is typed (#2068) | Same plus Draw | 85% | (Draw in features) |
| Keytips (Alt / F10) | Ribbon badges (#43) and numbered Quick Access Toolbar badges in the user's button order (#620; none while the toolbar is hidden, #1945); File › Options › Advanced › Display switch saved per user (ui.keytips); Alt leaves macOS Option typing alone |

Undo's ▾ list: recent steps newest first, hover highlights the steps a click undoes ("Undo 3 Actions"), one click undoes them all (#701; edit.undoTo, edit.undoHistory). Its menu ends with Hide Quick Access Toolbar, which takes it out of the title bar; Show Quick Access Toolbar on the ribbon's right-click menu, or in Customize Ribbon › Quick Access Toolbar, brings it back; kept between runs; ui.quickAccessToolbar for scripts (#1945). Customize Ribbon (#379): show, hide and reorder tabs, custom tabs and custom groups (on any tab) holding any commands, rename, remove, Reset; right-click on the ribbon; saved per user; tools.customizeRibbon for agents. Built-in tabs can't be renamed; no import/export file |

~100 (Options panes…) | ~45% | 11–19 |
| Task panes (Navigation, Styles, Comments, Reviewing, Format Picture/Shape, Thesaurus, Accessibility, Clipboard, Selection) | Navigation (long headings truncate with an ellipsis instead of expanding the pane, #759), Styles, Comments (balloons and cards read in both themes, #2045), Thesaurus, Restrict Editing, Accessibility (grouped findings, jump-to, fixes) and Alt Text (#386), Read Aloud, Zotero; Style Inspector (#236); Clipboard pane (#264) open | all | 70% | 4–6 |
| Context menus (right-click) | text, spelling suggestions, fields (Update Field, Edit Field…, Toggle Field Codes, #339; Update Field on a table of contents entry updates the table, #1197, and after a save and reopen, #2182); right-click selects a picture, shape or text box and offers Wrap Text (styles, Move with Text / Fix Position on Page, #513); tables, the items following the selection as in Word (Insert, Delete › Cells, Columns, Rows or Table whatever is selected (#1198), Merge and Split Cells, Distribute, AutoFit, Text Direction, Insert Caption…, Table Properties…; no Border Styles yet) | rich per context | 65% | 2–4 |
| Backstage (Home, New, Open, Info, Save As, Print, Share, Export, Options) | Home and New separate (#254), Info properties kept (#268), Options in Word's panes with working settings (#485), Print page with preview, page range and copies (#641); launched with nothing to open, the app starts on Home (the Start screen: Blank document, templates, Recent; no document is open until one is picked or opened, so Esc or Back shows an empty window with the ribbon greyed out but for Help, #1129), with File › Options › General › Start-up to turn it off (#766); Info › Inspect Document finds and removes hidden text by its effective formatting (direct, character or paragraph style) in every story: body, headers, footers, notes, comments and text boxes, and lists what it couldn't reach (#1344); File › Close (Mod+W, Mod+F4) closes the document and keeps the window, showing no page, as Word does; the window's close button quits (#1712) | 68% | 4–6 | |
| Rulers: indents, tabs, margins, table columns | indents draggable (one undo, #62); tab stops: corner selector (Left/Center/Right/Decimal/Bar), click to set, drag to move, drag off to clear, per-kind markers, Alt skips the snap, one undo step per gesture, double-click opens the Tabs dialog (#320); table column and row markers drag their borders (one undo) and in a cell the indents are measured from it (#700); the numbers thin out as the page shrinks on screen (every 1, 2, 4… units, never closer than 30 px, the small ticks never closer than 4 px, the text keeps its size), give way to an indent, tab or column marker on them, and the margins get ticks only; both rulers span the caret's page at its own scale in every layout (one column, One Page, Multiple Pages) and follow the caret to another page (#1878) | ✅ | 92% | 1 |
| On-canvas objects: select, drag, resize handles, nudge | ✅ tested (#228); a picture or shape behind text can be dragged across the overlapping text (body and header/footer), whether or not it was selected first, while a click without movement still edits that text | ✅ | 75% | — |
| On-canvas objects: select, drag, Ctrl+drag to copy, resize handles, nudge | ✅ tested (#228, #1014) | ✅ | 75% | — |
| Rotation handle, crop handles on canvas, alignment guides, smart guides | rotation handle (Shift: 15° steps), turned frames resize along their axes (#332); crop handles: Picture Format › Crop puts the picture in crop mode, black crop handles trim a side (a corner, two) keeping the scale and the visible part in place, the cropped-away part shows dimmed, Esc/Enter/a click outside/Crop again keep the crop, one undo step per drag (unturned pictures; no Crop to Shape, Aspect Ratio or Fill/Fit); alignment guides, our own design: a moved picture, shape or text box snaps its left, centre or right (top, middle or bottom) to the page's edges and centre, the margins and the other floating objects on the page within 6 screen points, x and y independently, turned objects by their rotated bounds, with a thin line across the page for each guide while dragging; Alt moves freely; File › Options › Advanced › Editing (ui.alignmentGuides) turns them off. Smart guides missing |
Word for Mac 16.113.4 shows no guide lines and snaps inconsistently (to the page's left edge, not its top, right or bottom; Word check K); Word for Windows' guides not observed | 75% | 1–2 |
| Tables on the page: drag column and row borders, resize handle past the bottom-right corner; select columns, rows and cells; "+" insert buttons; move handle | ✅ resize cursors, dashed guide, one undo step per drag, selection kept; Shift moves one column; Esc cancels (#217); Ctrl shares the change among the columns on the right, the left edge moves a left-aligned table's indent (a centred or right-aligned one keeps its alignment), a border of cells selected across moves only in their rows, Alt shows the column widths on the ruler (#711); double-click a column border to AutoFit it (a nested table's within the cell around it, #971); selection arrows above a column, left of a row and along a cell's left edge (a drag selects more; the cells are shaded and a column is edited cell by cell); "+" left of a row border and above a column border; move handle past the top-left corner (a click selects the table, a drag floats it where it's dropped); an ordinary drag, Shift+arrows or Shift+click from one cell into another select the rectangle of whole cells between them, and into or out of a table whole rows, their cells shaded whole (#971). Missing: a single selected cell's border; The Cell Size Height and Width boxes set every selected row and column (#1242). | ✅ | 95% | 1 |
| Selection: word/sentence/paragraph clicks, dragging after a double-click/triple-click/Ctrl+click extends by whole words/paragraphs/sentences (#549), Shift extend, F8 extend mode, column (Alt+drag, #237) | ✅ | ✅ | 90% | 1 |
| Zoom: Ctrl+scroll (only zooms; a coast or notch still gliding stops, #1743), pinch (#179), zoom buttons (#232), pages side by side when zoomed out (#251), still one per row after One Page or Page Width (#768) | ✅ | ✅ | 85% | — |
| Selection: word/sentence/paragraph clicks, dragging after a double-click/triple-click/Ctrl+click extends by whole words/paragraphs/sentences (#549), Shift extend, F8 extend mode, column (Alt+drag, #237), selection bar in the left margin (click a line, double-click a paragraph, triple-click or Ctrl+click everything, drag by lines, Shift+click extends; #856) | ✅ Missing: the selection bar in the right margin for right-to-left paragraphs, beside table rows, and Word's right-pointing arrow cursor (egui has none; the plain arrow shows) | ✅ | 92% | 1 |
| Headers and footers on the page: double-click the top or bottom margin to edit them, the body to leave | ✅ in Print Layout, also on a page with none yet: the header or footer that page shows is created (first page, even page or the default) and the caret put in it; one left empty is taken away again on leaving and is never saved (#960). Making one is an undo step, refused in a protected document. On a later section's page with no header anywhere it goes in the first section and shows on every section linked to it, as Word links to the previous section by default. With Different First Page (or Odd & Even) on, a double-click goes into the header that page shows even from another header being edited, and Insert › Header/Footer and Edit Header with the caret on page 1 use page 1's own (#2826). Web Layout, Draft and Read Mode show no margins and leave it alone | ✅ | 95% | 0.5 |
| Zoom: Ctrl+scroll (only zooms; a coast or notch still gliding stops, #1743), pinch (#179), zoom buttons (#232), pages side by side when zoomed out (#251) | ✅ | ✅ | 85% | — |
| Touchpad smooth/inertial scroll | ✅ (#252) | ✅ | 90% | — |
| Web Layout width | Text wraps to the whole work area (window width at the current zoom, 144–20,000 pt) and re-wraps once a window resize has settled (not on every frame of a drag) or at once on a zoom, keeping the caret in view; the sheet runs edge to edge with no centred page. Draft and Outline keep their 800 pt column; headless sessions keep 800 pt (#1876) | text across the window | 95% | — |
| Scrollbar drag page tip | ✅ while the vertical scrollbar is dragged, a tip beside the pointer names the page at the top of the window in the status bar's words ("Page 7 of 10") (#2551, canvas::tests::dragging_the_scrollbar_names_the_page_at_the_top); its look and wording not yet compared with Word's |
not compared | 70% | 0.5 |
| Web and Draft Layout rendering | Very long pages render only visible full-resolution raster tiles instead of shrinking one huge texture to the GPU size limit; nearby tiles are cached for scrolling | sharp document text | 95% | — |
| Reading Mode | Existing Read Mode ribbon button opens a read-only, viewport-column layout with animated horizontal paging, transient width/text/spacing controls, heading navigation (Navigation pane) and resize anchoring; print/export layout unchanged. The arrows, Page Up/Down and Escape work straight after entering it; only whole columns show, centred, at any width, text size or window size; the columns end above the page-turn bar (#1772) | reading-optimized view and navigation | 75% | 1–2 |
| Status bar (page x of y, words, language, view buttons, zoom slider) | ✅ (the language is the caret's, by name; a click sets the proofing language, or opens Set Proofing Language… for any other) | ✅ | 85% | — |
Caret motion: keys and typing glide the caret to its new place (100 ms, cubic-bezier(0, 0, 0, 1)), the blink fades (530 ms on and off, 100 ms fades); clicks and scripted moves don't glide. File › Options › Advanced › Animation (ui.caretAnimation) turns it off. The caret is black or white by contrast with what lies under it (paper, page colour, dark page, shading, highlight), never by the UI theme (#299) |
✅ as measured from Word for Windows (caret_glide.rs); zoom levels other than 100%, modifier keys and off-screen moves not measured |
✅ on Windows; Word for Mac not measured | 90% | 1–2 |
| Interface themes (light, dark, system #249, follows OS changes live #311), dark page separate from the interface theme (#194, #312); on a dark page highlights and character shading are dimmed, keeping their hue, so the text on them stays readable; coloured text below 4.5:1 on them is drawn white, and underlines and strikethroughs follow the same rule (#1252); Interface Theme as a searchable View command (light/dark/system, toggle without a value, #1861) | ✅ | ✅ | 90% | — |
Interface size (File › Options › General: Auto, which keeps the system display scale and shows the size it draws at, or an absolute 75–300 %, so "100%" is one screen pixel per point; ui.interfaceSize) (#475, #822). A size from before #822 (on top of the display scale) becomes the absolute size it drew at. On the web the browser's zoom is part of the display scale, so a chosen size cancels browser zoom (Ctrl+plus/minus no longer resize the interface); Auto follows it |
✅ | system display scaling only | 100% | — |
Animation effects (File › Options › Accessibility: Use system setting, On, Off; ui.animations). Off: a wheel notch scrolls at once; Ctrl+wheel zooms in whole steps, each drawn finished in its own frame (a notch at once; touchpad pinches and high-resolution wheels in steps of about 10% rather than gliding); menus, buttons and the scroll to the caret neither fade nor glide |
✅ "Use system setting" reads Windows (Animation effects), macOS (Reduce motion), the Linux/BSD desktops (settings portal: the cross-desktop reduced-motion preference, GNOME's switch, KDE's animation speed; the GTK and KDE settings files where no portal answers) and browsers (prefers-reduced-motion), and follows a change while running. Run on Windows and against a stand-in portal on Linux; not yet tried on a Mac or a real GNOME or KDE session |
not compared | 90% | 0.5–1 |
Full screen (#980): View › Window › Full Screen (view.fullScreen), F11 (⌃⌘F on macOS) toggles OS-level full screen, Escape leaves it, leaving gives back the earlier window size; the window manager's or macOS's own full screen keeps it in step. In the browser it's off (the browser's own F11) |
✅ | Word for Mac: View › Enter Full Screen (⌃⌘F); Word for Windows: Full Screen Mode hides the ribbon only | 100% | — |
| File dialogs (Open, Save As, Export, Insert Picture) | system dialog, without blocking the window (#94), its Save As type list naming every format with the document's own first (#1399); Linux/BSD without a file chooser portal or zenity: WordCraft's own browser, also File › Open › Browse in WordCraft… (#576) | system dialog | 95% | — |
| Platform conventions (macOS menus/traffic lights #255, Windows title bar, Linux CSD on Wayland #78) | partial | native | 70% | 3–5 |
| Screen readers (VoiceOver, Narrator, Orca) | AccessKit on; the document canvas describes paragraphs, headings (level), list items, tables, links, pictures (alt text) and the caret and selection, for the pages on screen (#488); Windows Magnifier follows the caret, also onto an empty line after Enter or Shift+Enter (#1119); not yet tried with real screen readers | full | 50% | 5–8 |
| Right-to-left (mirrored) interface | ❌ | ✅ (Arabic, Hebrew Word) | 0% | in localization |
Save Changes exposes the document-specific question as an alert-dialog name and the loss warning plus any failed-save explanation as its description (#1015). Full-app AccessKit coverage checks the focused choice's dialog ancestry, all three choices and cancellation. This is accessibility-tree evidence; native Windows screen-reader and spoken VoiceOver verification remain pending. Visual layout, wording and save policy are unchanged.
The Language dialog reads effective character formatting, including document defaults, paragraph styles and character styles. Accepting it unchanged keeps inherited language and no-proof choices (#2717); explicit direct formatting still takes precedence. Other proofing and Windows-specific reports remain separate.
Find navigation (#2096)
Find selects the Results tab, including when it prefills selected text. Editing the search query also reveals matching or empty results. Manual Headings and Pages navigation remains available until the next search action.
Footnote and endnote editing keeps body and note text at normal opacity, on light and dark pages. Headers and footers still dim outside their editing context (#2545).
Revision history
| Date | Change | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Dragging the vertical scrollbar shows a tip beside the pointer with the page at the top of the window ("Page 7 of 10"); nothing said where the drag would land (#2551) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | File › Close (Mod+W, Mod+F4) closes the document and keeps the window, showing no page, as Word does (it quit the whole app); the window's close button still asks to save and quits (#1712) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Save Changes exposes an alert-dialog role, the document-specific question and loss/failure context to accessibility; full-app focus/ancestry regression. Native screen-reader verification remains pending. |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Dragging the vertical scrollbar shows a tip beside the pointer with the page at the top of the window ("Page 7 of 10"); nothing said where the drag would land (#2551) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Dialogs, the Read Aloud player and the file browser: the close control is a box at the title bar's right end, the full title-bar height and 1.6× as wide, all of it clickable; red with a white ✕ while the pointer is over it, darker red pressed, in both themes; Escape as before (#1885) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Font box (ribbon and mini toolbar): a Recently Used Fonts section at the top of the list holds the fonts applied from the box, the mini toolbar or the Font dialog, most recent first, once each, ten at most, kept between runs in ui.json; All Fonts follows; the sections show while nothing is typed and a query lists its matches only; Up/Down walk the recent entries then the list, Enter applies the highlighted one; a recent font no longer installed stays listed (#2068) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Web Layout text fills the window width and re-wraps once a resize settles or at once on a zoom, instead of a fixed 800 pt column; Draft and Outline keep their 800 pt column (#1876) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Update Field is offered on a table of contents after it was saved and reopened (a range field then), including at its first and last character; repeated save and update no longer adds a blank line (#2182; the flow in that report already worked since #1197) |
| 2026-10-18 | trivial | Different First Page: double-clicking page 1's header while editing another one goes into page 1's own; Insert › Header/Footer/Page Number and Edit Header/Footer use the header the caret's page shows (first, even or default) instead of always the default (#2826) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Track Changes Options › Moves: Moved from and Moved to rows (mark and colour; green double strikethrough and double underline by default, as in Word for Mac, which has no Track moves checkbox). review.trackingOptions {"moveFromMark", "moveFromColor", "moveToMark", "moveToColor"}, saved per user; "trackMoves" sets the document's setting. Mark lists in Word for Mac's order; Deletions and Moved from gain (none), Bold, Italic and Double underline; moved text marked (none) is plain text |
| 2026-10-17 | trivial | Language dialog keeps inherited proofing language and no-proof choices (#2717); readiness estimates unchanged |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Create Source: automatic Tag like Word's (Smi20, Kim001); Edit Source keeps the Tag and citations show the new Author and Year (#2094; Word for Mac 16.113.4, user-checked) |
| 2026-10-18 | trivial | Split Cells merged-cell limits and equal parts, Convert Text to Table Initial column width, both from the Word check (#2592) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Split Cells and Convert Text to Table dialogs (#2592): 58 modal dialogs |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Font list: each entry's capitals are centred in its row, so a font with a very tall ascent (Amiri, Amiri Quran) no longer sits low or is cut in half, and the list reads as one even list (#2570) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Read Mode keeps the keyboard on entering, shows only whole columns, centred, and ends them above the page-turn bar (#1772) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Comment and revision balloons are readable in the dark theme: the card, the markup area, the author stripes and the leader lines come from theme tokens, and the text reaches 4.5:1 (#2045) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Layout › Columns works on the selected text, as in Word: section breaks around it, the rest of the document unchanged; More Columns… adds "Selected text" to Apply to and picks it when text is selected (#2024) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Navigation Find and query edits expose Results (#2096) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | AutoCorrect Options › Exceptions: "Automatically add words to list" switches for First Letter and INitial CAps (#1857) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Multilevel List heading presets: every selected paragraph takes the first level (Heading 1), as Word for Mac does; headings outside the selection keep their styles and levels (#1793) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Multilevel List heading presets: selected paragraphs already in a Heading style keep their style and level, every other selected paragraph becomes Heading 1, as Word for Mac does (#1793) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Multilevel List gallery: four lists linked to Heading 1–9 (1 / 1.1 / 1.1.1; Article I. / Section 1.01 / (a); I. / A. / 1.; Chapter 1), list.multilevelPreset; headings keep their styles and new headings are numbered (#1793). Style gallery previews don't show the numbers yet |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | A mouse drag that edits a table (column or row border, move handle) leaves the view where it is; typing still follows the caret (#1738) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Ctrl/⌘+wheel only zooms: a coast or wheel notch still gliding stops instead of scrolling the page on top of the zoom (#1743) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | The Spike: Ctrl+F3 (⌘F3 on macOS) cuts the selection to the end of the Spike, Ctrl+Shift+F3 (⌘⇧F3) inserts everything collected and empties it; it is the AutoText entry "Spike", so Quick Parts inserts it without emptying it. Per session, not saved between launches |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Table Layout › Cell Margins opens with current table defaults; unchanged margins and per-cell overrides stay intact until edits are confirmed (#1960) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Paste (Ctrl+V, Home › Paste) of plain text from another program: every pasted line takes the formatting of the paragraph it lands in, as with Keep Text Only, so a right-to-left paragraph stays right-to-left after the first line. The lines after the first had default formatting |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Add Font… takes several files at once (desktop dialog and web picker are multi-select); each is added, a bad file is reported and skipped, at most 2,000 per pick (the status line counts the skipped); on the web each font is added and reported on its own, with no single summary line; the built-in browser still picks one file (#1789) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Background control keyboard/text input reaches the focused widget without activating the OS window; document edits, Find, Save Changes cancellation, protection and no-replay controls (#2420) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Quick Access Toolbar: Hide Quick Access Toolbar at the end of its menu; Show Quick Access Toolbar on the ribbon's right-click menu and in Customize Ribbon › Quick Access Toolbar; kept between runs; ui.quickAccessToolbar (#1945) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Rulers: numbers thin out with the zoom (every 1, 2, 4… units, at least 30 px apart; ticks at least 4 px apart), give way to the indent, tab and column markers, margins get ticks only; both rulers span the caret's page in every layout and follow the caret (#1878); Rulers 90% → 92% |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Spelling as you type: the word being typed has no red squiggle until the caret leaves it, by a key or a click; misspelled words already there keep theirs (#1552) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Text Highlight Color: No Color becomes the Highlight button's choice, as in Word, so the next click on the button removes highlighting instead of applying the colour picked before; the ribbon and the mini toolbar share one menu (#2105) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Body and active note text keep normal opacity while editing footnotes or endnotes (#2545); header/footer dimming is unchanged |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | New/Modify Table Style: No Border on a part that inherits its lines hides them; emptying the font box makes the part's font inherited again (#1288) |
| 2026-10-17 | minor | Insert › Drop Cap is a menu (None, Dropped, In margin, Drop Cap Options…) with a Drop Cap dialog (position, font, lines 1–10, distance 0–22 in), #2601; Modal dialogs 56 → 57 |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Tab stops edited on the ruler: corner kind selector, click to set, drag to move or off to clear, per-kind markers mirrored for RTL; each gesture one para.tabs call and one undo step; Rulers 85% → 90% |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Tables on the page: one selected cell (Select Cell, or a click along its left edge) is a cell selection when its border is dragged: the border moves in its row only (#962) |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | Default keyboard shortcuts expanded to 140 commands on macOS (169 combinations) and 158 on Linux/Windows (188 combinations): Style Inspector (Shift+F1), Macros (Alt+F8), Strikethrough (Mod+Shift+X), Find Next (Shift+F4), Copy/Paste Insert keys (Mod+Insert, Shift+Insert), Go Back (Mod+Alt+Z), File Open/Save/Save As/Print (Mod+Alt+F2, Alt+Shift+F2, Alt+F2, Mod+Alt+I), Field navigation (Alt+F1, Alt+Shift+F1), Outline show first line (Alt+Shift+L), Next Footnote (Alt+Shift+>), Link to Previous (Alt+Shift+R), AutoText (Alt+F3), Spelling on Mac (Mod+Alt+L) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Web/Draft Layout long-page blur fixed using visible full-resolution raster tiles, tested against a 440-paragraph document |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | A click on the ribbon's chrome that isn't a command button (a Styles gallery tile, a tab name, empty ribbon space, a View check box, a status-bar item) hands the keyboard to the page in the same frame, as a ribbon command button does: typing right after the click reaches the document instead of being swallowed (#1093 follow-up) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Page Setup: a Vertical alignment box (Top, Center, Justified, Bottom), applied on OK only if changed (#1320) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | macOS shortcuts as in Word for Mac: ⌘⇧S Save As (Apply Styles keeps Ctrl+Shift+S elsewhere), ⌘⌥E Insert Endnote (macOS takes ⌘⌥D for the Dock), ⌘⌥A New Comment, ⌃H Replace, ⌘⌥R collapse the ribbon |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | On-canvas objects: regression-tested dragging Behind Text pictures and shapes across overlapping text (body and header/footer), selected or not, without stealing ordinary text clicks; In Front of Text covered too |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Insert Hyperlink: Link to › Place in This Document (#1234) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Insert › Bookmark as in Word (#1236): the name box over the list, Add / Delete / Go To beside them, Sort by Name or Location, Hidden bookmarks; it opens on the bookmark around the caret, Add (Enter) closes it, Delete and Go To keep it open (Cancel then reads Close), and Go To selects the bookmark's text, as Find and Replace › Go To does (Ctrl+click on a link to a bookmark only puts the caret at its start, as in Word). Not yet: with the caret in no bookmark Word offers the one added last; here the name box starts empty |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Table context menu: Delete is a submenu with Delete Cells, Columns, Rows and Table whatever is selected, so the caret in a cell is enough to delete the table (#1198) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Track Changes Options › Comments: "In the margin" (default, as in Word) or "Only for the selected text", an option Word doesn't have (#1055). In the second mode the margin column is gone and only the comment under the caret, or the clicked one, floats beside the page (over its edge in a narrow window); comment ranges stay shaded in the text. review.trackingOptions {"commentDisplay": "margin"|"selected"} |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | On-canvas objects: Ctrl+drag copies a picture, shape or text box (arrange.copyTo, #1014) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Cross-reference dialog: reference type (heading, bookmark, equation, figure, table), what to insert and the item; the ribbon button opened nothing before (#916); modal dialog count 55 |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Document title opens Rename Document; the account badge opens Options › General for user name and initials. |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Magnifiers: a line's end mark (paragraph mark or line break) takes room in what the canvas tells assistive technology, so Windows Magnifier, which places the caret by the character after it, follows the caret onto an empty line after Enter or Shift+Enter instead of staying on the line above (#1119) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Save Changes prompt: Save takes focus from the page too, so after typing the arrow keys, Tab and Enter answer it instead of moving the caret behind it (#1597) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Copy and Cut put HTML beside the text on the system clipboard for every selection, not only one holding an equation, so pasting into a browser, mail client or another word processor keeps bold, italic, fonts and sizes (desktop, through arboard; Wayland without data-control and the web: text only) (#1523) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Web: preferences (theme, interface size, editing options…) are kept in the browser's localStorage between visits, as the desktop app keeps ui.json; before, a reload brought back light mode and the defaults (#2132) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | The app opens on the Home tab every launch, as in Word: the active ribbon tab is no longer restored from ui.json between runs. Going File and back to the editor still returns to the tab that was showing, contextual tabs included |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | The caret is black or white by contrast with the paper, page colour, dark page, shading or highlight under it (#299) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Clicks on ribbon and status-bar chrome that run no command button (Styles and style-set gallery tiles, tab names, empty ribbon space, View check boxes, the status bar's view buttons and language menu) no longer take keyboard focus from the page: the caret stays and typing continues, as in Word; text fields such as the font size box still take focus. Tabs, gallery tiles and the status bar's view buttons report their name and state to screen readers (#1093) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Interface size: a chosen size is absolute ("100%" is one screen pixel per point, even where the system reports 200 % under a bare window manager) and the new default, Auto, keeps the display scale and shows the size it draws at; 75–300 %; an old saved size becomes the size it drew at; on the web a chosen size cancels browser zoom, Auto follows it (#822) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Copy and Cut of a selection holding an equation put HTML with the equation as MathML on the system clipboard beside the text (desktop, through arboard), as MathML in HTML on the clipboard (Word/LibreOffice paste not yet verified; OMML is #1297) (#816). Only copies containing an equation get HTML. Web: text only |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Copy and Cut of one equation alone also put its MathML in the clipboard formats Word reads first when it pastes math: "MathML" and "MathML Presentation" on Windows, public.mathml.presentation and public.mathml on macOS (#1297). A copy with text around the equation doesn't offer them, so pasting keeps the text. The paste into Word is not yet verified. Linux, BSD and web: unchanged |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | New/Modify Table Style: Apply formatting to any of the 13 table style parts (whole table, header/total row, first/last column, odd/even row and column bands, four corner cells), each with font, size, bold, italic, underline, colour, fill, borders (line style, width, colour; all/none/outside/inside/each edge) and the 9-way cell alignment, over a live preview (#714) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Save Changes prompt on the web: Save before New/Open holds the command back until the browser's save picker has written and closed the file; a cancelled or failed picker save keeps the document and brings the prompt back with the reason (#1315) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Inspect Document (#1344): hidden text found by effective formatting (direct, character style, paragraph style) in the body, headers, footers, notes, comments and text boxes; Remove All deletes it all in one undo step (whole hidden paragraphs with their marks, and the notes of hidden references) and reports a residual list, including tables whose style hides text |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Alignment guides while moving pictures, shapes and text boxes: WordCraft's own design (snapping to the page, margins and other objects, thin lines while dragging, Alt moves freely, ui.alignmentGuides); 25% → 50% |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Page Setup: a Paper group with Paper size (the named sizes, the one the section has in either orientation, or Custom size) and Width and Height in the measurement unit; a wider-than-tall size turns the orientation to landscape; a size the margins don't fit keeps the dialog open with a message and applies nothing. Layout › Size ends with More Paper Sizes…, which opens it (#1433) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Dark page (View › Switch Modes): highlights and character shading are dimmed toward black, keeping their hue (yellow turns a dim olive), instead of having their lightness inverted, which left yellow bright under white text; text on them draws light (white for black and Automatic), coloured text below 4.5:1 on them is drawn white, and underlines and strikethroughs follow the same rule. Light page, print and exports unchanged. Unlike Word, Automatic text stays white on the dark page (#1252) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Full screen (#980): View › Window › Full Screen and F11 (⌃⌘F on macOS), Escape leaves it once nothing else takes it (a selection collapses first); Next Field moves to Alt+F1; keyboard counts re-measured (152 commands, 172 combinations) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | File dialogs: the system Save As type list names each format, the document's own first (#1399) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Web: a pasted picture inserts only when the page is the edit target (page focused; no dialog, Backstage or text field such as a comment or Find box taking input), once; otherwise it is ignored (#1349) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Crop handles on the canvas: Picture Format › Crop crop mode with handles, the cropped-away part dimmed, one undo step per drag; with the alignment guides, 50% → 75% |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Mini toolbar: scrolled with its selection toward the ribbon (or the status bar), it slides under the rulers and ribbon with the text instead of drawing over them, and the part out of view takes no clicks |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Mini toolbar: a click on the ribbon (or anywhere outside the document) puts it away until the selection changes, so it never covers the ribbon's drop-downs; it now draws below every popup and menu instead of over them |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Cell Size Height/Width apply to the whole selection (#1242) |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Tables on the page: Ctrl shares a column border's change among the columns right of it, the left edge moves a left-aligned table's indent (a centred or right-aligned one keeps its alignment), a border of cells selected across moves only in their rows, Alt shows the column widths on the ruler (#711); 80% → 90% |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Rulers: table column and row markers drag their borders (one undo step; from the ruler only the column left of a border changes, with Shift the neighbour makes up the difference), and in a cell the indents and tabs are measured from it (#700) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Tables on the page: a double-click on a nested table's column border fits the column within the cell around the table; a selection from text into or across a table shades the whole cells of the rows it takes (#971) |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Table context menu as in Word: its items follow the selection (the caret in a cell, several cells, whole columns or rows, the whole table), adding Delete Cells, Split Cells, Distribute Rows and Columns, AutoFit, Text Direction, Insert Caption… and Table Properties… to Insert, Delete and Merge Cells; a right-click beside selected cells drops them |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Tables on the page: ordinary drags, Shift+arrows and Shift+click over cells select a rectangle of whole cells, as in Word |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Tables on the page: selection areas for columns, rows and cells, "+" insert buttons, the move handle and double-click AutoFit; Select Column in the ribbon |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Quick Access Toolbar: Undo list to undo several steps at once (#701) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Start screen (#1129): no document is created behind it; Esc or Back shows an empty window (no page, ribbon greyed out but for Help, Info/Save/Save As/Print/Export off in File, title "WordCraft") until Blank document, a template or a file is opened; closing asks nothing; commands that need a document say so (only listed interface commands and font.add work without one; the control channel's document.inspect and ui.render say no document is open) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Start screen (#766): launched with no file, the app opens on File › Home (Blank document, templates, Recent) as Word does; Esc or the back arrow leaves an empty blank document; File › Options › General › Start-up turns it off, kept between runs; ui.startScreen for agents. Not shown with files, --sample or --control |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Alt+Q moves to "Tell me" command search, as in Word for Windows (#819) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Ribbon groups fit above their labels: View › Show puts Hide White Space (#645) in a second column instead of a fourth row over the "Show" label; Developer › Controls drops the gaps that pushed it into its label; Layout › Paragraph (#654) puts its column gap inside cells (no add_space in the grid, a debug assertion) and 1.5 pt between rows so it fits; ribbon_groups_fit_above_their_labels checks every tab in every language |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Window caption: a file name in a script the interface fonts lack (Hebrew, Arabic, and the rest; CJK via the CJK UI font) is drawn with a fallback face instead of ? |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Save Changes prompt: Save has focus when it opens, so Enter, Tab and the arrow keys answer without the mouse (#861) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Navigation headings truncate with an ellipsis within the pane width, preserving resizing and full-text hover (#759) |
| 2026-10-11 | minor | Reading Mode: viewport-height horizontal columns, animated paging, transient display controls, heading navigation and responsive anchored resizing |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Alt activation handles native key/modifier events in either order, including key-up with the old Alt flag; taps toggle once, chords and focus loss do not activate KeyTips |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Quick Access Toolbar KeyTips (#620): 1–9, zero-prefixed numbers for longer toolbars, disabled commands stay disabled, Escape cancels, badge keystrokes never type into the document; persisted File › Options switch |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Ribbon buttons that run a command (alignment, Bold, styles…) hand keyboard focus back to the document, so typing continues without another click; they also report their name and enabled state to screen readers (#686) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Keytips use Word for Windows' tab letters, as observed there: File F (opens the Backstage), Design G, References S, Review R, View W, Help Y (were L, R, S, V and none) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Comments: comment text and author names in a script the interface fonts lack (Arabic, Hebrew, and the rest; CJK via the CJK UI font) are drawn with a fallback face in the balloons and Comments pane instead of boxes; read-only balloons show right-to-left text in reading order (words, bidi runs and brackets), set against the right edge |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | Keytips reach the contextual table tabs with Word's two-letter badges: Alt, J, T opens Table Design and Alt, J, L Table Layout; after J only the J badges stay (#1183) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Shift+F10 opens the page's context menu below the caret, with the spelling suggestions and synonyms for the word there; ui.contextMenu for agents (#821). The Menu key itself isn't passed on by the windowing layer yet |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Search: Alt+Q (and Alt, Q) opens the Search box from anywhere, as in Word; the key's own "q" isn't typed; every word of a query matches, so "insert table" finds Insert › Tables › Table; tools.search lists matches for agents (#819) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | Find, Replace and Go To as in Word (#712): Ctrl+F and Home › Find open only the Navigation pane with its search box ready to type in (the selected text searched for); Find and Replace is one dialog with Find, Replace and Go To tabs (Advanced Find, Ctrl+H, Ctrl+G / F5); Go To moves to a page (a number, or +2 / −1 from the current page; Next and Previous step a page) or a bookmark |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Tables on the page: column and row borders and the resize handle drag, with a dashed guide and one undo step per drag (#217) |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Animation effects › Use system setting also reads macOS (Reduce motion) and the Linux/BSD desktops (settings portal: the cross-desktop reduced-motion preference, GNOME's switch, KDE's animation speed; the GTK and KDE settings files where no portal answers), and follows a change without a restart |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Animation effects setting in File › Options › Accessibility (Use system setting, On, Off), kept between runs: the app eased wheel scrolling, zooming and its fades whatever the system's setting was; off, they land at once. Follows the system's setting on Windows and in browsers; ui.animations for agents |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Built-in file browser when the system file dialog can't be shown on Linux/BSD; ui.fileBrowser (#576) |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Every measurement now follows File › Options › Advanced › Measurement units: the Line Numbers "From text" distance and the Hyphenation zone were still fixed in inches (#755) |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Track Changes Options › Show revisions in balloons works: tracked deletions in the body leave the text for "Deleted: …" balloons in the markup area, joined to where they were; inline again where no balloons show (Comments pane, Read Mode, side by side, Web Layout), and always inline in headers, footers, notes and text boxes |
| 2026-10-11 | trivial | Mini toolbar in two rows like Word's (font, size, grow, shrink; B I U S, highlight, font colour, four alignments) with every button inside the bar; font and size lists drop from the box's left edge; dropdown arrows a readable size; font list entries take the theme's text colour in dark mode (#535) |

Quick Access Toolbar labels are generated from the current button order. For more than nine
buttons, the remaining labels start with zero and use the same number of digits (for example
01, 02 on a ten-button toolbar; 001 through 011 on a twenty-button toolbar). This keeps
labels unambiguous. Those extra-number assignments have not been compared with Word.

| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Narrow windows: the tab strip keeps the room of Comments / Editing / Share and gives way in order (tab padding, Comments and Editing labels, Share label, plain tabs into », active and contextual labels cut with …, last the active tab into »); File never leaves the strip. Public sources say Word keeps those buttons in view and shrinks the tabs; the » menu is ours (#2026) |
| 2026-10-15 | trivial | Interface Theme as a searchable View › Dark Mode command (light/dark/system, toggles light and dark without a value), driving the same setting as Options; ribbon menu rewired to it (#1861) |
