# Parity with Adobe Illustrator > **Last reviewed:** 2026-10-10 · **Last updated:** 2026-10-30 · **Change:** minor (Effects: bounded effect length inputs clamp on commit and reject invalid text visibly (#4638)) · **Target:** Adobe Illustrator 2026 (30.x; public release notes through 30.7, August 2026) ## Feature submission evidence **Feature evidence last updated:** 2026-10-22. The shared assessment status line and revision history are current upstream; this dated section records the submission's feature evidence and revisions without rescoring upstream or claiming a new combined build or runtime measurement. - Current-main conflict reconciliation retains upstream and feature behavior; scores and estimates unchanged - Superseded 2026-10-20 behavior, retained as history: Artboard Options shares existing presets and orientation controls and can fit artwork without moving it; artwork fitting uses the original target artboard and revision-scoped bounds caches (scores/hours unchanged) - Artboard Options puts Fit to Artwork Bounds and Fit to Selected Art in the Preset menu. Artwork bounds cover all drawn document art, including other artboards and off-board art; selection bounds may span artboards. Fit changes only the active artboard and keeps artwork stationary, including position-only fitting with Move Artwork enabled. Existing Background Color and presets remain available; scores and estimates unchanged. Artboard Options forwards the active Artboard tool's Scale Artwork with Artboard option for ordinary resizing. Fit to Artwork Bounds and Fit to Selected Art explicitly leave artwork stationary. Dialog regression coverage checks preset/orientation/typed-size intent with scaling on and off, draft cancellation, one-step Undo/Redo, and fitting while Move Artwork and Scale Artwork are enabled. This is a narrow follow-up to #3277; no parity score or estimate is reassessed. ### Feature revisions | Date | Change | Summary | |---|---|---| | 2026-10-30 | minor | Effects: bounded length inputs clamp on commit and reject invalid text visibly (#4638); scores unchanged. | | 2026-10-29 | minor | File formats: attached Affinity Recolor Adjustment (RcRA) layers import as color overlays (#4420); scores unchanged. | | 2026-10-29 | minor | Type core: copied text runs retain character attributes across document switches and canvas pastes (#4459); scores unchanged. | | 2026-10-29 | minor | Type core: soft return (Shift+Enter forced line break, U+2028) breaks lines without starting new paragraphs (#2754); scores unchanged. | | 2026-10-26 | minor | Type: on Windows, the font families GDI lists that DirectWrite's system font collection doesn't name are asked for one by one (a GDI font selected into a device context gives its DirectWrite face, and that face its files), so fonts Creative Cloud loads that only GDI has, read from their extensionless files in place, are in the font menus (#1258; `system_fonts::tests::fonts_only_gdi_has_loaded_are_listed_by_their_files`); the faces still listed keep their files between looks, so the look every two seconds stays about as fast. Scores and hours unchanged. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Reconcile upstream documentation after review F-3; preserve every dated revision and the original scaleArt runtime evidence without repeating completed jobs. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Reconcile upstream documentation after review F-2; preserve every dated revision and the original scaleArt runtime evidence without repeating completed jobs. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Reconcile subsequent upstream progress updates without changing the runtime or repeating completed evidence; retain every dated upstream and feature revision. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Resynchronize newer upstream progress documentation using the same owned source/build cache; preserve every feature revision and the original scaleArt runtime evidence. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Retain the latest upstream shared assessment and complete revision history after newer documentation landed; scaleArt runtime and its original evidence remain unchanged. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Correct the scaleArt follow-up evidence description to match current upstream shared status and revision history; runtime, evidence, scores and estimates unchanged. | | 2026-10-22 | minor | Artboard Options honors Scale Artwork with Artboard for preset, orientation and typed-size changes; both Fits keep artwork stationary; scores and estimates unchanged. | | 2026-10-21 | minor | Correct current global-all-art and document/revision cache descriptions; mark target-scoped fitting as superseded 2026-10-20 history. Runtime, tests, scores and estimates unchanged. | | 2026-10-21 | minor | Artboard Options puts Fit to Artwork Bounds and Fit to Selected Art in the Preset menu. | | 2026-10-21 | minor | Reconcile feature status and revision evidence in a dated section; retain shared baseline metadata for independent upstream updates. Scores and estimates are not reassessed. | | 2026-10-21 | minor | Reconcile this feature with current main, preserving both sets of behavior and progress evidence; scores and estimates unchanged. | | 2026-10-20 | minor | Review follow-up: artwork fitting uses the original target artboard and revision-scoped bounds caches; focused regression evidence and behavior documentation updated; scores and hours unchanged. | | 2026-10-20 | minor | Artboard Options shares existing presets and orientation controls and can fit artwork without moving it; scores and hours unchanged. | The authoritative parity assessment. So nothing here is a menu dump or a side-by-side measurement: the numbers come from our own code against Illustrator's public documentation. - **From the code (measured, origin/main `01e165af`):** - Menu tree (`crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs`, laid out in Illustrator's menu order): 348 items bound to commands, 26 stubs (`todo(…)`/`todos(…)`), so 93.0% of menu items do something (348 and 26 after Snap to Glyph shipped in #3124; 348 and 27 after the Revolve merge; 350 and 25, 93.3%, after Graph › Design and Marker; 353 and 22, 94.1%, after Extrude & Bevel, Inflate and Rotate). Scores were set by the agents that built the features, so they are upper bounds; this pass lowered the ones contradicted by open issues. ## Feature areas Weights are the share of Illustrator users' everyday work each area represents (drawing, paths, paint and type dominate; 3D, graphs and automation are specialist). They sum to 105. Feature depth = Σ weight × score / Σ weight. | Area | Weight | Done | Main gaps | One agent (h) | Kind | |---|---:|---:|---|---:|---| | Selection, transform & align tools | 6 | 85% | Direct Selection segment click/Delete corrected (#1278); With 4–6 agents on disjoint crates, wall-clock time divides by about 3.5–4 (shared files such as `menus.rs` and the i18n catalogs serialize some work): ~95–165 h to full parity. **Why the totals moved up from ~320–500 h (2026-10-05):** the target moved (30.x added gradient dither, perceptual blending, new snaps, artboard locking, the Blend panel, Turntable), open issues lowered three areas, the raster-effects row was re-counted bottom-up from measured filter throughput, and generative AI is now counted. Work that landed since (Variables, Distort/Pixelate/Texture filters, Object Mosaic, German, placed documents) moved other rows up. ## Ready for real work Three audiences, each with its own readiness and its own hours to ~95%. Essentials ⊂ mainstream ⊂ full, so the hours nest. Hours are calibrated as in [Calibration](#calibration). They divide by about 3.5–4 across 4–6 agents for the feature and fidelity work; stability on users' hardware, the real-file corpus and native-language review parallelize less and need humans. | Audience | Ready % | Opus 5.5 agent hours to ~95% (one agent) | With 4–6 agents | Work that dominates | |---|---:|---:|---:|---| | **Full Illustrator** (ready for real work; decides the stage) | **~62%** (57–67%) | **~340–560 h** | ~95–160 h | the mainstream work below, plus 3D (50–85 h), raster effects (24–40 h), advanced type (20–28 h), generative AI (30–60 h), localization (55–90 h) and ecosystem | | **Mainstream illustrator** | **~65%** (60–70%) | **~230–380 h** | ~65–110 h | the interaction-fidelity pass (60–90 h), hardening and QA (30–50 h), stability (20–35 h), performance budgets (15–25 h), `.ai` exchange (10–20 h), the remaining depth of the everyday areas | | **Essentials user** | **~75%** (70–80%) | **~60–105 h** | ~25–45 h | launch and stability on Windows (20–35 h), in-app help and onboarding (8–15 h), basic QA (10–15 h), Shape Builder regions (4–8 h), UI polish | ### Full Illustrator: additive weighted sum over the dimensions The standard's method, the same in every app: a weighted **sum** over the dimensions, with written weights. Values are from [By dimension](#by-dimension). | Dimension | Weight | Value | Contribution | |---|---:|---:|---:| | Features (depth) | 35 | 75% | 26.3 | | UI/UX fidelity | 15 | 55% | 8.3 | | File formats | 12 | 75% | 9.0 | | Stability | 10 | 60% | 6.0 | | Performance | 8 | 60% | 4.8 | | Platforms | 5 | 80% | 4.0 | | Hardware | 4 | 35% | 1.4 | | Localization | 4 | 74% | 3.0 | | Ecosystem and plug-ins | 4 | 15% | 0.6 | | AI features | 3 | 0% | 0.0 | | **Ready for real work** | **100** | | **~62%** | The weights put most of the number on what professionals use daily (features, interaction, files, stability). Generative AI also sits inside the features row at weight 2 of 105, so it is counted slightly twice; that costs under a point. ### Mainstream illustrator and essentials user Both start from feature depth over the areas concerned. **Mainstream:** ~83% over 16 areas (weight 83 of 105: selection, drawing, path operations, colour, strokes, appearance, live effects, type core, symbols and blends, layers and artboards, view, guides, file formats, Export for Screens, UI chrome, print). That is discounted ×0.9 for interaction fidelity, ×0.92 for stability on real machines and ×0.92 for Illustrator-file exchange (83 × 0.9 × 0.92 × 0.92 ≈ 63). The dimensions a typical illustrator rarely hits (plug-in ecosystem, generative AI, pen tilt, languages beyond their own) are left out. **Essentials:** see [Essentials user](#essentials-user). The discounts, with the evidence: - **Illustrator's own files (×0.92).** `.ai` and EPS open as editable art by reading their PDF/PostScript and the structure of the editing data. Users do open legacy files a lot: 28 of the 350 issues (8%, ~22 people) are about `.ai`/EPS, the most common single format theme. 20 of the 28 are fixed (often the same day). The 8 open ones are about structure, not missing art: layers flattened or multiplied (#951: 109 layers instead of 14; #868), guides lost (#779), slower opening (#758), live effects, brushes and symbols as their drawn look (#637). VectorCraft can't write Illustrator's editing data (undocumented), so its PDF-compatible `.ai` opens in Illustrator as plain art; the legacy `.ai` of version 7 it also writes keeps layers, groups and type as text (one artboard per file, no transparency) but hasn't been tested by users yet (#868). That blocks beta (the main-format rule) for people who hand files back to Illustrator users, but it doesn't stop someone opening and reworking their own archive. - **Interaction fidelity (×0.9).** Pen, Direct Selection, smart guides and snapping are deep ([ui-parity.md](ui-parity.md)), and there has never been a side-by-side session. The issue tracker says the details mostly hold: 79 issues are about core drawing (pen, paths, selection, snapping, transform), 68 of them (86%) closed, 11 open (#991, #975, #955, #973 among them). One practitioner wrote "0 learning curve from pretty heavy AI use over last 20+ years" (#541). - **Stability on real machines (×0.92).** The code never panics by design, and the main platform (macOS) starts reliably, but 26 issues mention a crash, freeze or failed launch (8 open: #858, #964 fixed the day of this review, #620, #818, #905 on Windows 7, #834). There is no field record and no real-world file corpus yet. - **Performance unverified.** Budgets (`vectorcraft-cli perf`) were all met at 25k paths on 2026-10-11; runs of 0.10.0 on Linux with 4 logical CPUs, reported in #1172 on 2026-10-13, missed all three render budgets at 20k paths. Performance is not discounted separately. Open user reports of slowness in mainstream work include #575 (Linux AppImage), #758 (`.ai` open time), #1097 (zoom and pan in 0.9.0) and #1731 (a drag that stutters as it starts). - **Missing subsystems** a minority need daily (3D, CJK vertical composition, scripting) pull the full number below the mainstream one. ### Essentials user A beginner or casual user who touches only the core features, at their default settings. Excluded: advanced options, pro workflows, file-exchange edge cases, and everything the mainstream number already leaves out. Depth here is "does the basic use work", not the area's full score. | Core feature | Weight | Depth | Evidence | |---|---:|---:|---| | New, open and save documents | 8 | 95% | New Document presets, Open for SVG/PDF/`.ai`/images, lossless native save, Data Recovery | | Shape tools (rectangle, ellipse, polygon, star, line) | 9 | 95% | all shape tools, Live Corners | | Selection, move, scale, rotate | 9 | 92% | bounding box, smart guides, transform tools | | Pen and Pencil, basic use | 7 | 88% | [ui-parity.md](ui-parity.md); a few Pencil and Curvature options missing | | Fill, stroke, colour, swatches | 9 | 95% | M3 done; highlighted-text Eyedropper font/paint and source/target transparency refusal regression-tested; scores and hours unchanged | | Gradients, basic | 4 | 90% | Gradient panel and on-canvas annotator | | Type: point and area text, font, size | 8 | 88% | font menu with previews; Hyphenation… and Justification… options per paragraph (#2310, #2755) | | Align, group, arrange | 6 | 95% | | | Layers, basic | 4 | 85% | Layers panel rework; no row context menus | | Shape Builder | 5 | 70% | beginners lean on it; region detection failed on art of thousands of segments (#937's reproduced case, fixed, and its edge-source grid is bounded in memory; unconfirmed on the reporter's file) | | Pathfinder | 4 | 95% | exact booleans | | Place images, Image Trace | 4 | 85% | 13 trace presets | | Export PNG/JPG/SVG/PDF, print | 8 | 92% | Art Optimized supersample closes Asset Export ghost borders (#983 / #1037) | | Undo and redo | 4 | 100% | unlimited, property-tested | | Zoom, pan, fit | 4 | 95% | | | Artboards, basic | 4 | 88% | | | **Weighted depth** | **97** | **~91%** | | The discounts a beginner actually hits: - **Launch and stability, ×0.93:** fine on macOS, but some Windows machines fail to start (#858, #620, #818). - **Discoverability and UI clarity, ×0.92:** the layout follows Illustrator's and comes in 11 languages, but there is no in-app help (Help › VectorCraft Help… is a stub), no Learn panel or tutorials, and a newcomer meets Illustrator's density without Illustrator's learning material. - **Opening files people send them, ×0.96:** PDF, SVG, images and most `.ai` files open as editable art. Layer-structure problems (#951) matter less to a beginner. 91 × 0.93 × 0.92 × 0.96 ≈ 75: **~75% (70–80%), estimated.** ### User sentiment (measured 2026-10-10) All 350 issues and 964 issue comments on GitHub (Discussions are off), authors other than the maintainers: - **Praise:** 17 issue threads from 15 people ("Great work on this. It's kind of amazing" #954; "really great job" #841; "I really love this project" #620; "0 learning curve from pretty heavy AI use over last 20+ years" #541). - **"Replacing Illustrator" reports:** none found in the tracker. Praise is for the app as it is, not reports of having switched on paid work. Owner reports from practitioners outside GitHub aren't counted here. - **Themes of the 350 issues:** core drawing 79 (11 open), import/export 59 (17 open), launch/crash/platform/ performance 51 (12 open), UI chrome and layers 46 (10 open), type 28 (4 open), colour 12 (5 open), other and requests 75 (24 open). 35 are titled as feature requests. The open set is mostly core-path bugs and file-exchange problems, not niche features. **Stage: alpha.** All six core workflows pass the core-workflow gate end to end on macOS with save and reopen ([roadmap.md › Alpha gate](roadmap.md#alpha-gate)); file exchange with Illustrator users is partial, which is what keeps it from beta, not from alpha. ## By dimension | Dimension | % | One agent (h) | Kind | Doc | |---|---:|---:|---|---| | Features (depth, weighted) | 75% | 220–360 | estimated | this file | | UI/UX fidelity (look ~80%, interaction ~45%) | 55% | 70–110 | estimated | [ui-parity.md](ui-parity.md) | | File formats | 75% | 15–30 | estimated | [file-format-parity.md](file-format-parity.md) | | Hardware (GPU, pen, touch, displays) | 35% | 25–45 | estimated | [hardware-parity.md](hardware-parity.md) | | Localization (the 12 key languages, equally weighted) | 74% | 50–85 | measured from catalogs | [localization-parity.md](localization-parity.md) | | Performance | ~60% | 15–25 | estimated (unverified budgets) | [gaps.md](gaps.md) | | Stability | ~60% | 30–50 | estimated | [gaps.md](gaps.md) | | Platforms (macOS, Windows x64/arm64, Linux, FreeBSD, web) | 80% | 15–25 | estimated | [gaps.md](gaps.md) | | Ecosystem and plug-ins (scripting, third-party plug-ins) | 15% | 30–60 | estimated | [gaps.md](gaps.md) | | AI features (generative) | 0% | 30–60 (+ owner decision) | measured (absent) | [gaps.md](gaps.md) | | Agent automation (MCP, CLI, control channel) | beyond Illustrator | — | measured | [mcp.md](mcp.md) | The dimension hours overlap (the feature rows already hold some UI, format and AI work), so they don't add up to the full-parity total. ## Calibration Hours come from this repo's own history (git log and merged-PR timestamps, `gh pr list`): - **Raster filters**, one agent working serially on [gap 2](gaps.md): Pixelate (4 filters, merged 2026-10-10 08:47), Texture (6, 12:44), Distort (3, 16:24). About 4 h per batch, **0.7–1.2 h per Photoshop-style filter** including dialog, catalogue row, menus and translations into 11 languages. - **M3 (paint and appearance):** a 92-task plan whose packages were planned at 5–11 h each took about 1–1.5 agent hours each, on 2026-10-04/05 with 6–8 agents. - **Medium features:** about 0.8 h each (Text Wrap, Graphs, Effect › Pathfinder…: ~20 in ~16 h on 2026-10-02). - **Whole repo:** 1,671 commits and 592 merged PRs from 2026-09-30 to 2026-10-10, with several agents in parallel and a dozen community contributors. Large subsystems (3D, CJK composition, generative AI) have no comparable history and are counted bottom-up, with a wider range. What needs a human: native-speaker review of the translations, an owner decision on generative models, real Illustrator files that users own (used locally, never committed), and Wacom/pen hardware for tilt and rotation. ## Where we already beat Illustrator Exact curve booleans, off-thread multithreaded rendering, unlimited undo, lossless SVG/PDF export of live effects, a documented JSON format, Affinity 1–3 import, the same app on the web and on Linux/FreeBSD, scrubby numeric fields, sandboxed WebAssembly plug-ins, and every command, gesture and dialog drivable by agents (MCP, CLI, control channel). ## Out of scope (by design or by law) - **Adobe cloud services** (Libraries sync, Adobe Fonts, Projects, Express templates, Firefly): pluggable provider APIs at most, never built in. - **Adobe's bundled assets** (swatch, brush, symbol libraries, presets, icons): ours are original. - **Illustrator's private editing data, beyond its structure:** see [file-format-parity.md](file-format-parity.md#illustrators-private-editing-data). Film Grain (G2, 2026-10-12) is the first Artistic filter: deterministic document-space monochrome grain, transparency-preserving tone controls, a bounded live dialog, undo and appearance editing, with PNG rendering and SVG/PDF raster baking. Evidence: `crates/effects/src/pixel/artistic.rs`, its `film_grain_*` tests and the canvas/export cases in `crates/engine/src/tests/rasterfilters.rs`. This raises the measured Photoshop filter count to 29/57; the depth estimate is conservatively 49%. The full feature/readiness headline remains unchanged at its existing rounding. Cutout, Neon Glow and Poster Edges (G2, 2026-10-16) follow as original Artistic filters with live preview, undo, appearance editing and save/reopen, keeping coverage at any Document Raster Effects resolution. Evidence: `crates/effects/src/pixel/artistic.rs`, its `cutout_*`, `neon_glow_*` and `poster_edges_*` tests, and `artistic_settings_survive_a_save_and_open` in `crates/engine/src/tests/rasterfilters.rs`. Smudge Stick, Sponge and Watercolor follow (G2, 2026-10-16) as original Artistic filters with the same live preview, undo, appearance editing and save/reopen; evidence: `crates/effects/src/pixel/paint.rs`, its `pixel::tests_paint::*` tests and `tests_rasterfilters`. Measured Photoshop filter count 36/57; depth unchanged. `crates/engine/src/tests/rasterfilters.rs`. Bas Relief, Charcoal, Photocopy and Stamp (G2, 2026-10-16, #2527) follow as original Sketch filters (`crates/effects/src/pixel/sketch_ink.rs`, `pixel::tests_sketch::*`). Measured Photoshop filter count 37/57; depth unchanged. ## Detailed missing items per area (2026-10-05 table, still current unless the area table above says otherwise) > **Duplicated rows (2026-10-14):** this table lists "Selection, transform & align tools" three times and "Drawing tools" > twice, each time with different text, as merges that each edited the table left them. Which text is current needs the > owner's judgement, so the rows are kept as they are. The previous estimate's per-area missing lists, kept as evidence. Scores in it are superseded by the table above. _Method (2026-10-02; M3 rows re-derived 2026-10-04, file, export, print, links and UI-chrome rows after M4 on 2026-10-05):_ Illustrator's feature surface is split into 22 areas, weighted by how much of the app (and of real users' work) each represents. Each area is scored by depth of behaviour, not by presence of a menu item: an area is 100% only when every feature in it behaves like Illustrator. Feature parity = Σ weight × score / Σ weight. Remaining time is counted per area from what is missing, calibrated on measured throughput: in the last session one agent landed about 20 medium features (Text Wrap, Graphs, Effect → Pathfinder, export baking…) in ~16 h wall clock including builds and CI on a heavily loaded machine — about 0.8 h per medium feature; large subsystems (3D, raster filters, vertical type) are counted bottom-up. The M3 rows (colour, strokes, appearance) come from a detailed 92-task M3 plan whose review found more missing depth than the first estimate; all 92 tasks landed on 2026-10-04 and 2026-10-05 with 6–8 agents in parallel; its packages, planned at 5–11 h each, took about 1–1.5 agent-hours each, so the other rows (estimated on the older scale) are likely high. | Area | Weight | Done | Missing (main items) | One agent (h) | |---|---:|---:|---|---:| | Selection, transform & align tools | 6 | 85% | Free Transform/Scale/Reflect along a rotated box, Global Edit of similar groups, transform nuances (the rotated persistent bounding box is done) | 4–6 | | Drawing tools | 7 | 85% | rough-square Shaper recognition and orientation steps corrected; materials, shadows, ray tracing, 3D Classic and more complete visibility remain | 25–45 | | Type advanced | 4 | 50% | CJK composition for vertical type (mojikumi beyond Line-end Punctuation Half Width — the other sets (and their paragraph-start bracket and indent rules), custom kinsoku sets (beyond Hard, Soft and None) and the Mojikumi Settings dialog —, manual tate-chu-yoko is done, its up/down settings remain; No Break is done), tab leaders, spell check (open dictionary), Touch Type, Retype; vertical point/area/path type and Type Orientation have initial support (beyond parity, not scored: inline symbols in text) | 20–28 | | Type core | 9 | 80% | Middle Eastern features beyond bidi layout and Paragraph Direction (Character Direction, kashidas, the Middle Eastern composers, editable bidirectional SVG text, a split caret where directions meet); Hyphenation… and Justification… options (Every-line Composer for justified and ragged text, per object, is done; it is tuned by eye, not yet compared side by side with Illustrator; mixed type sizes in a paragraph still break single-line in non-rectangular area type and with text wrap), Optical Margin Alignment, paragraph spacing limit for vertically justified area type, hidden characters, paragraph attributes in the Type tool's copy and paste (the characters keep their styles, the paragraphs take the destination's), mixed-value display in the Paragraph panel for a selection across differing paragraphs, partial selection of type-area anchors by marquee, optional font-size preservation during group scaling (scaled character controls fixed in #1034). Links and Package are done; placed VectorCraft documents are done (linked by default, vectors in every output, previews, Break Link, Expand, Edit Original, refresh on save) | 2–3 | | **Feature parity** | **103** | **~75%** | | **~210–330** | | Interaction-fidelity pass (side by side with Illustrator: every tool modifier, cursor, dialog, Properties context) | | | | 60–90 | | Hardening (big-file corpus, fuzzing, cross-platform and browser QA, accessibility, packaging) | | | Bounded control socket waits (#1726); PngSuite pinned-file integrity and download budgets verified (#1729); RPM runtime capabilities and glibc floor checked (#1275); titled PDF exports ask viewers to display the document title (#3646); real-distro installation/start-up QA pending | 50–80 | | **Full parity** | | **~56%** | | **~320–500** | _Inventories (2026-10-07):_ 13 menu items still stubbed (`todo(…)` in `crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs`); every tool implemented except Touch Type; 51 panel modules; Illustrator-style live effects ~44/54, Photoshop-style raster effects ~4/56, 3D 0/5; ~2,840 tests; ~221k lines of Rust. ## Honest assessment by dimension (2026-10-05) The previous assessment's evidence per dimension, kept as it was; the [By dimension](#by-dimension) table above supersedes its numbers. **In one line:** about two-thirds to three-quarters of Illustrator's features exist and work, and for everyday vector illustration (drawing, paths, paint and appearance, SVG/PDF/print) VectorCraft is close to usable. Measured against "a power user can't tell the difference", it is closer to 40–55%. What stands between here and "anyone can switch" is a handful of large subsystems plus a fidelity pass, not a long tail of small fixes. **How much to trust the numbers:** area scores are graded by the agents that built the features, from behaviour docs (`plan/illustrator/`) and tests, not by side-by-side use of Illustrator. Treat them as upper bounds. Look & feel is the only dimension measured against the reference app. Performance budgets haven't been re-run on an idle machine since 2026-10-01. | Dimension | Estimate | Evidence and what's missing | |---|---|---| | **Breadth:** menus, tools and panels exist | ~90% | 13 menu items still stubbed; every tool implemented except Touch Type; 51 panel modules | | **Depth:** each feature behaves like Illustrator | ~69–75% | Strong: paint, appearance and colour (M3), Pathfinder and booleans, selection, drawing, files (M4). Weak: advanced type (~45%; inline symbols in text are beyond parity and don't raise it), brushes and symbols (in progress), raster effects (~20%; since 57/57 filters and the Effect Gallery, #2883, see the area table above) | | **Large missing subsystems** | 0–20% | 3D & Materials (~25%, initial 3D types without materials), SVG Filters (Photoshop-style raster effects (57/57) and the Effect Gallery (#2883) have since shipped), CJK composition (vertical type with kinsoku, tate-chu-yoko and the font's vertical metrics; mojikumi open), scripting | | **Interaction fidelity:** modifiers, cursors, small behaviours | ~30–40% | The dedicated pass hasn't started, and there has been no side-by-side session with Illustrator yet. A power user notices this first | | **Look & feel** | ~75–80% | Measured against Illustrator 2026 screenshots (2026-10-02); the panels added since haven't been re-measured | | **File interop** | ~85% | SVG/SVGZ, PDF and PDF-compatible `.ai` (and legacy version 7 `.ai` out, keeping layers, groups and type as text), EPS, DXF, EMF/WMF, raster formats, PSD export and PSD/PSB placement (merged image), Place and Links, Package, Print, clipboard flavours. Affinity documents (Affinity 1–3) open natively as editable art, checked against 51 pinned public files (33 current `.af`), with selected saved-thumbnail comparisons and every-board native/SVG/PDF/PSD checks for current files; Affinity export is missing and effects, adjustments and brushes don't import. Affinity isn't an Illustrator feature, so this doesn't raise the parity score. The editing copy inside an Illustrator EPS or `.ai` is read for its structure: layers, groups, names, hidden objects and type, colours, gradients, transparency, images and every artboard (see Out of scope for what it doesn't read yet); DWG has no open spec | | **Bundled content:** brush, symbol, style and swatch libraries | ~30% | Ours are original and generated in code, and far fewer than Illustrator ships; symbol libraries have one (Basic Shapes) and brush libraries four (Art Ribbons, Calligraphic Nibs, Pattern Borders, Scatter Shapes) beside User Defined and Other Library… | | **Performance** | unverified | Multithreaded, off-thread rendering and caches are in place. The last budget run (2026-10-01, loaded machine) measured 290 ms for a 50k-path fit against a 16 ms budget. Re-run `vectorcraft-cli perf` on an idle machine | | **Robustness** | good, new | ~2,840 tests, property tests, no panics in shipped code (lints, the `guard` safety net, import fuzzing), Data Recovery. Missing: a corpus of real-world files, Windows/Linux/browser QA | | **Platforms and 1.0 polish** | ~60% | The macOS app and the web build work, and Finder opens every readable format with the macOS app (#295, #354); on macOS the menus are in the system menu bar, laid out as a Mac app's, with the in-window menus as a fallback (`--in-window-menus`; verified on Windows and by cross-compilation, not yet by hand on a Mac); hybrid-graphics laptops render on the power-saving GPU by default on Windows and macOS (#306), and Windows starts on Direct3D 12, falling back to OpenGL, and loads no Vulkan driver unless `WGPU_BACKEND` asks for it (#545: Vulkan flickered black on an Intel GPU, DX12 and OpenGL didn't; #806: a faulty Vulkan driver crashed the app before its window appeared; verified by unit tests and the reporter's runs with `WGPU_BACKEND`), and Linux on the GPU the desktop runs on, since a Wayland compositor may refuse frames from the other one; a window that fails on its GPU while starting up starts again on the next one instead of crashing (#502; the dual-GPU Wayland case is verified by unit tests and cross-compilation, not on such hardware); web drops land in the document they were dropped on (#359); desktop drops carry no pointer position (winit 0.30), so a dropped document opens as a tab of its own and a picture or text is placed in the middle of the view, while the web places anything dropped on the canvas and opens what is dropped off it, as Illustrator does (#472); a web page that loses its WebGPU device or WebGL context restarts its graphics with the same documents (#369); on Linux/Wayland the clipboard reads the compositor's own (data-control) and copied image files paste, but files can't be dropped on the window under native Wayland until eframe moves to winit 0.31 (#398; the Wayland side is verified by compilation only), so Preferences › Performance › Linux Display Server › X11 (XWayland) opens the window through XWayland, where drops work (#1151; verified by unit tests and cross-compilation, not on a Wayland desktop); on Linux the Paste menu checks the system clipboard on a background thread, so a clipboard owner that never answers no longer freezes the window, while Windows and macOS keep their quick in-line check (#510; the X11 hang verified by the contributor, here by headless tests); on KDE Plasma 6.3+ under Wayland, pens and pen displays reach the app only under XWayland (`WAYLAND_DISPLAY=`) or with KWin's `KWIN_WAYLAND_EMULATE_TABLET=1`, since winit 0.30 has no Wayland tablet input (#491, not verified on hardware); Windows/Linux packaging and accessibility are pending | | **Agent automation** | beyond Illustrator | Every command, gesture and dialog is drivable over MCP, the CLI and the control channel; synthetic-input counts, pending events and per-frame control requests are bounded (#1709); what an agent reads and writes on disk can be confined to chosen folders (`--automation-read-root` / `--automation-write-root`, as in PhotoCraft, #832) | | **Scrubby numeric fields** | beyond Illustrator | As in Photoshop, dragging a numeric field's label (`W:`, `Opacity:`, the Character panel's icons) left or right steps its value live; one undo step per drag, Escape cancels (#400) | | **Align Stroke on live type** | beyond Illustrator | The Stroke panel's Align Stroke works on type's character stroke: inside or outside the glyphs without Create Outlines, the type staying editable (as InDesign does; users have asked Illustrator for it since 2010, e.g. [redd.it/1dwhos6](https://redd.it/1dwhos6)). Canvas, PDF and EPS clip it to its side of the glyphs; SVG keeps the text live and draws the stroke on the glyph outlines (#2294) | ## Evidence: what ships today, by area - 3D lighting presets: `crates/effects/src/lighting_presets.rs`, `crates/engine/src/cmd/effectcmd/lighting_presets_tests.rs` and the pointer tests in `crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/revolve/tests.rs` cover recognition, atomic targeting, native round trips, preview, Cancel, reset and Undo. - **Status-bar pointer readout (2026-10-18):** uses the same effective ruler origin as the position fields, then formats the relative X/Y in General units. The absolute pointer position, document, selection, Undo/Redo and saved state are preserved. Three `chrome::tests::status_coordinates_*` painted-text regressions cover zero/positive/negative origins, unit conversion, global/artboard mode, active artboard, reset and missing pointer/document. Original headless status-bar captures were reviewed before and after the change. Scores and hours are unchanged. **Drawing tools — Polygon and Star counts:** The existing canvas placement dialog reads the stored count and saves it only after successful placement. `polygon_and_star_canvas_counts_persist_without_new_toolbar_dialogs` covers both tools, repeated drags, tool switching, reopening and Cancel. Counts remain session tool options. Existing click and toolbar gestures are retained; no score or hour change. **Drawing tools, Star inner radius held with Ctrl/Cmd:** While a star is dragged out, Ctrl/Cmd keeps the inner radius the star showed when the key went down, also when the key is pressed with the pointer still. `a_star_drag_holds_its_inner_radius_with_ctrl_and_straightens_with_alt` and `a_star_drag_holds_the_inner_radius_it_shows_when_ctrl_goes_down` cover it, with Alt's straight shoulders and a drag canceled with Escape. **Live trace result bounds and selection highlights exclude the retained bitmap except in source-image views:** `live_trace_result_bounds_exclude_the_retained_bitmap_at_any_angle` checks every TraceView, geometric and visual bounds and rotated result bounds. `live_trace_selection_highlight_excludes_the_retained_source_rectangle` checks result highlights and the existing ordinary-group policy. Shared editing-child traversal also preserves Shaper handling. **Artboard Options shares existing presets and orientation controls and can fit artwork without moving it; artwork fitting includes all drawn document art across artboards and off-board; artwork bounds are cached by active document and revision, and selection uses the shared bounds cache across artboards:** Shared existing preset definitions are reused; no external preset assets are added. Presets preserve each selected artboard's orientation, and orientation choices apply even when the active board already matches. Fit operations draft bounds until OK, affect only the active artboard and leave artwork in place. Regression coverage checks draft/Cancel, selected-set application, active-only fitting and Undo. **Review follow-up:** The fit-query follow-up covers fitting after draft dimensions change, updated artwork after a document revision, cache scope and new-artboard fitting/history. Selection uses the existing application bounds cache; global artwork queries include all drawn document art and are cached by active document and revision; draft geometry and target artboards do not limit membership. This is not a native timing claim. - **Stable status-bar readouts:** The status message keeps its left anchor and clipping allocation as live values, canvas hover and background-job state change. Coordinate and spinner slots stay reserved; narrow windows hide optional diagnostics, then coordinates, to preserve message space. Widths are measured from the active font, translated labels and fixed numeric samples, never current readings. Coordinates through +/-9999.99 selected units, timings through 9999.9 ms and FPS through 9999 remain readable. Extreme values are elided with full tooltip/accessibility text; only elided fields show a tooltip. Coordinate inspection retains the last point per document and clears on PointerGone. Regressions cover message origin/clip/bounds/elision invariance, all registered languages and ten units, responsive layouts, coordinate inspection and document switching, and accessible busy transitions. The contributor rebuilt and confirmed the original status-bar issue is fixed with their own artwork on 2026-10-19; the subsequent upstream rebase is checked by regressions and full CI. The artwork stays local. Scores and estimates are unchanged. Sample widths use a bounded single-entry UI cache keyed by language, unit and pixels per point; two regressions verify reuse during live updates and invalidation after each display-setting change. - **Canvas review follow-up:** Cached canvas dimensions match the renderer limit before cache-key creation, view construction and worker submission. Controlled-worker regression checks oversized width and height, high DPI and the render transform without allocating oversized images. Scores and estimates are unchanged. - **Cached canvas frames during viewport changes:** Cached screen textures use their own raster dimensions and pixels-per-point when reprojected. `canvas::tests::cached_frames_keep_their_scale_during_resize_rotation_and_dpi_changes` holds the worker and checks every UV corner against the cached render transform, including isolated viewport-only resize at zero/30-degree rotation, fractional raster dimensions, zoom/pan, changed rotation, monitor-DPI changes in both directions, Pixel Preview and replacement-frame delivery. The contributor rebuilt and confirmed the original resize issue is fixed with their own artwork on 2026-10-19; the subsequent upstream rebase is checked by regressions and full CI. The artwork stays local. Scores and estimates are unchanged. - **PDF editable import:** Place from bytes or a path with `link: false`, and `clipboard.importPdf` followed by Paste, preserve live type on the selected page. Place still honors `textAs: "outlines"`. Synthetic two-page regressions: `crates/engine/src/cmd/fileio/tests_pdffidelity.rs`. No change to the PDF reader's existing fallback rules. - **Selected Grid Repeat handles (#2691):** `tools/src/repeat_grid.rs` tests place the handles outside the grid at zoom 0.5, 1 and 4, preview rows, columns and spacing, leave no undo step for a drag that ends where it began, and give bounding-box handles priority; a headless canvas regression drags the row handle two tiles down in a zoomed view (3 → 5 rows, the source unchanged, one Undo back) and the column-spacing slider. Scores and hours unchanged. - **Selected Mirror Repeat handles:** a headless canvas regression creates the default mirror repeat and drags its Top bounding-box handle where the axis crosses it; the repeat grows vertically while its width stays fixed. Existing mirror-axis checks cover center movement and end-handle hit priority. The focused UI mirror tests pass. Scores and hours unchanged. - **Transform effect options (#885):** Effect › Distort & Transform › Transform… has visible Transform Objects, Transform Patterns and Scale Strokes & Effects checkboxes (`distort.transform` params `objects`, `patterns`, `strokes`; files without them draw as before). With Transform Objects off the geometry stays and makes no copies; Scale Strokes & Effects scales stroke weights, dashes and the fills' and strokes' effect distances by the mean scale, and Transform Patterns moves pattern tiles, each copy `k` by the transformation `k` times. Such objects draw, export and expand through the same per-copy art, so the canvas and Expand Appearance agree (engine `tests_transformfx`, effects `tests_transformfx`, the dialog test). Not yet: a Transform in a fill's or stroke's own effects ignores the two options, and object effects after it keep their distances. Public reference: [Transform objects](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/transforming-objects.html), [Summary of effects](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/summary-of-effects.html). Scores and hours unchanged. - **Warp Options (#1760):** Effect > Warp and existing Appearance effect links share the fifteen existing styles, original schematic previews, orientation choices and percent Bend/Distortion controls. Focused tests passed for real numeric entry and slider input, Preview/Cancel, immediate Enter/OK, mixed-style edits, target/slot/visibility preservation and Undo/Redo. Each applied style stays unchanged until an explicit Style choice. Original style-menu and live-preview captures were reviewed; their numeric values were supplied programmatically. Public references: [Reshaping with effects](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/reshaping-objects-effects.html) and [Using effects](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/effects.html). Warp geometry, optional Properties integration and remembered defaults are unchanged; no broader parity claim. - **Constrain Angle (#394):** General › Constrain Angle turns the arrow keys' axes (guides stay on the page's), holds Shift drags of the Selection, Direct Selection, Free Transform, Slice Selection, Reshape and Measure tools and the Pen's handles to the turned axes, and new rectangles, rounded rectangles, ellipses, grids, point and area type, Shift-drawn polygons and stars and the shape size dialogs are drawn along it with their bounding box turned; 0° and whole turns are exactly as before, quarter turns exact (). Tests: `tests_constrain_tools`, `tests_constrain_new` (engine), `geom` `constrain_axes` / `rotate_deg`, the shape, grid and type tool tests. - **Clipping paths on their outline (G1):** the selection tools (Selection, Direct Selection, Group Selection), Object Highlighting and a right-click take a clipping path on its outline before the art it clips; Select Behind lists the same; the eyedropper, the tools that act on what is drawn and the selection tools' double-clicks, loaded text and guide release take the art. Doc and tool regression tests; score unchanged. - **Escape in Selection tool drags:** Escape during a Selection tool move or Alt-drag copy, a bounding-box scale or rotation, a marquee, or a corner widget, pie widget or bracket drag cancels it: the art returns to its state at the press, no copy is left, no undo step is added, the release does nothing, and the tool stays chosen. Regression tests: `escape_cancels_*` in `select/tests.rs` and `pie.rs`, and `escape_cancels_a_selection_tool_move_copy_scale_or_rotation` in `tests/selectescape.rs`. - **Existing-guide Escape cancellation (G1):** Escape clears a pending guide press or drag through Selection and Direct/Group Selection, cancelling a begun preview. Eight app-input regressions cover both axes, move/copy, temporary selection-tool borrowing from idle Pen, preselected-guide document/interaction-start selection and Undo/Redo/saved-state preservation, later on-canvas motion/release, Shift-press cancellation, and ordinary-release/Enter/idle controls. Historical focused checks on `8ab574b7` recorded five expected RED failures with three passing controls, then all eight GREEN tests and the Direct Selection Escape control passed. All nine also passed in current full CI. A full CI retry on the five-unit combined source at `a0671777` passed all seven stages with 6,613 test outcomes on 2026-10-14. An earlier full-CI run on the identical source panicked in the randomized `ai_mutated_save_never_panics` test; the cause remains unresolved. This five-fix batch does not claim to repair that failure. The original 1280×960 headless app capture from `b076025a` was reviewed for one vertical Selection guide after Escape; source review found its scene unchanged on `a0671777`. Scores and hours unchanged. - **Escape in more tool drags:** Escape during an Anchor Point drag, a Mesh tool drag, a Direct Selection drag of a mesh point, a corner widget or the brackets of type on a path, or a Shape Builder drag cancels it: the art goes back to how the press found it, no undo step is added, the release does nothing, and the tool stays chosen. Escape during a Measure tool drag brings back the measurement before it. Regression tests: `escape_cancels_*` in `draw2/anchor/tests.rs`, `meshedit.rs`, `direct/tests.rs`, `builder/tests.rs` and `xform/measure.rs`, and `escape_cancels_an_anchor_point_mesh_shape_builder_or_measure_drag` in `tests/toolescape.rs`. - **TIFF in screen and asset export:** both format menus expose the existing TIFF encoder and Format Settings. Headless UI regressions choose TIFF and check scaled dimensions, artboard selection, filenames, encoding options, saved settings and collected-asset output. Public reference: [Export for Screens](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/save-and-export/export-files-to-different-formats/export-for-screens.html), updated 2026-09-28, lists TIFF for both artboards and assets. Adobe staff [confirmed support in 30.2.1](https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-desktop-feature-requests/suggestions/49081034-add-tiff-format-into-export-for-screens-assets-d) on 2026-02-19; the older 2025 Collect assets guide omits TIFF. - **Export for Screens of the selected artboards:** while the Artboard tool is in use, File › Export › Export for Screens… (`file.exportForScreens`) opens with the artboards the tool has selected checked on its Artboards tab, and Export Artboard writes only those. Shift-clicks on the canvas, or Shift- or Ctrl/Cmd-clicks on the Artboards panel's rows, select several. The other fields show the settings the document last exported with. With another tool in use, the dialog takes its artboard choice from those settings too. Public reference: [Export selected artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/organize-manage-artboards/export-artboards.html). - **Effects in Export Selection and asset crops:** File › Export Selection, Asset Export, Export for Screens' Assets tab and CSS Properties' rasterized art crop each object to the bounds the renderer measures for what it draws: drop shadows, glows, geometry effects such as Offset Path, a group's own effects and the effects in a symbol's art. A brushed path is cropped to its visual bounds, and a Shaper group is cropped to the art it shows. `assets.list` reports the same crop. Engine tests export a square with each effect, a group with a shadow and an asset with a shadow, and check that the effect is inside the image. Public reference: a [Community Expert answer](https://community.adobe.com/t5/illustrator-discussions/exporting-assets-adds-transparent-borders/m-p/10708713/highlight/true) traces the extra area of exported assets to the raster effects' area (Document Raster Effects Settings › Add Around Object). - **Effects in the art's bounds:** Export with Use Artboards off, Fit to Artwork Bounds, and the other exports of the whole art (EPS without artboards, Export for Screens' Full Document, Save for Web (Legacy) with Clip to Artboard off) measure each visible object as the export crops above do. The drop shadows and other effects of groups, layers, type and images are inside the image or the artboard. A Shaper group without effects of its own is measured by the art it shows, and the hidden members of a group with a drop shadow, a glow or another raster effect do not count unless it is a Shaper group or also has a geometry, Pathfinder, Crop Marks or 3D effect or a visible effect on its own fill or stroke. The SVG of an artboard keeps an object whose effects alone reach the artboard. Tests measure a group, type and an image with a drop shadow, export a group and type with Use Artboards off and fit an artboard to them. - **Selected artboard deletion:** the Artboards panel menu, panel trash button and Properties use the same selected set; selecting all retains artboard 1. Pointer-event tests cover nonadjacent and single selections, the original first-board survivor, ordinary artwork, Undo/Redo and the single-board guard. Public reference: [Delete artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/add-edit-artboards/delete-artboards.html). - **Delete Empty Artboards:** the Artboards panel menu item ([Delete artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/add-edit-artboards/delete-artboards.html)) runs `artboard.deleteEmpty`: every unlocked artboard with no artwork goes with its guides in one undo step, artboard 1 stays when every artboard is empty and none is locked, and the panel makes an artboard that is left active; an artboard is empty when no object (hidden, locked and template art included; guides not) has visual bounds that meet or touch it, a group counting by its members and a clip group or clipping layer by its members inside the clip (our reading of "no artwork"; the pages give no finer rule). Engine tests in `tests/panelcmds.rs` (`delete_empty_artboards_*`) and the panel test `delete_empty_artboards_deletes_the_empty_ones_and_selects_one_left`. - **Artboard history selection:** headless pointer/key tests in `panels/properties.rs` pass for panel New → Undo → Delete/Backspace/Properties, Duplicate → Undo → Delete, pruning removed indices and preserving valid multiselection. They assert board survivors, artwork and object selection, Move/Scale Artwork options, saved state and Undo/Redo. Full workspace CI passes. - **Artboard tab-switch follow-up:** changing the active document through its tab aligns the Artboard tool with the displayed board before Properties Delete; clicking the already-active tab preserves multiselection and Move/Scale Artwork options. Three headless `chrome::tests::artboard_document_tab_*` regressions cover actual tab A → B → A clicks followed by Properties Delete, surviving boards and guides, preserved artwork/symbols and Undo/Redo; controls cover same-tab multiselection, Move/Scale Artwork options and other tools. Historical focused validation on `dbd2497b` recorded one expected RED failure with two passing controls, then all three GREEN tests passed. All three also passed in historical full CI on `a0671777`. - **Artboard clean active-tab close (2026-10-15):** with the Artboard tool active, closing a clean active tab restores the surviving document's displayed board before Properties Delete. Nine targeted checks passed: three existing tab regressions, one clean close/Delete regression and five existing unsaved-document controls. The close regression checks the correct surviving board, preserved artwork/symbols and object selection, affected guides, one Delete edit, saved state and Undo/Redo. Three reviewed original full-app headless captures show the active tab before closing, the surviving document's shown board after closing, and the correct survivor after Properties Delete, using the actual tab × and Delete controls. - **Colour emoji with bitmap glyphs:** `sbix` (Apple Color Emoji) and `CBDT` (Noto Color Emoji) glyphs draw as their largest strike's PNG, placed with the type and unpainted by its fill; PDF writes them in Type 3 glyphs or as images, SVG as images with outlined text, EPS and legacy `.ai` as images, and Create Outlines makes embedded images. Synthetic test fonts in `crates/text/src/test_fonts.rs`; tests `crates/text/src/tests/bitmaps.rs`, `crates/render/src/tests/bitmapglyphs.rs`, `crates/svg/tests/it/colour_glyphs.rs`, `pdf::tests::colour_bitmap_glyphs_export_as_images`, the `eps` `colour_bitmap_glyphs_*` tests and `tests_pathops::create_outlines_turns_bitmap_glyphs_into_images`. COLR and OpenType SVG fonts remain. - **COLR colour fonts:** v0 and v1 glyphs draw as vector layers (solid colours, linear and radial gradients, clips, blend modes, the foreground colour from the run's fill) on the canvas, as paths in SVG, EPS, legacy `.ai` and PDF with outlined text, as Type 3 text in PDF, and as editable groups with Create Outlines; sweep gradients and Porter-Duff compositing draw the glyph as an image. Measured by `tests_colr`, `render::tests_colrglyphs`, `pdf::tests::colr_glyphs_export_as_vector_art`, `svg/tests/it/colour_glyphs.rs`, `eps` `colr_glyphs_*`, `tests_pathops::create_outlines_turns_colr_glyphs_into_layer_groups`. Scores unchanged (estimated). - **OpenType SVG colour fonts:** each glyph's SVG document is read by the SVG importer (registered by the engine) into vector art in the run's colours, then drawn, exported and outlined as COLR glyphs are; PDF real text writes them as text that draws nothing and draws their art where they sit. Measured by `tests_svg_glyphs`, `svg/tests/it/svg_glyphs.rs`, `tests_colourfonts::create_outlines_turns_svg_glyphs_into_groups`, `tests_colourfonts::pdf_real_text_draws_svg_glyphs_as_art_and_keeps_their_characters`. Scores unchanged (estimated). - **Character-style Auto leading:** capture and explicit style attributes retain Auto as a reset, distinct from omitted leading. Redefine and later numeric updates preserve local leading overrides; the Character Styles marker recognizes Auto correctly. Regression assertions cover partial definitions, Undo/Redo and native save/load serialization. Public references: [Character and paragraph styles](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/character-paragraph-styles.html) and [Leading](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/line-character-spacing.html). - **Text styles redefined to the defaults:** New and Redefine Character Style and Paragraph Style capture every attribute of the selected text, including those at their defaults (Auto kerning, Roman baseline alignment, the default Hyphenation options, the Every-line Composer, no tab stops), and `charStyle.setAttrs` and `paraStyle.setAttrs` keep an attribute set to its default value. After a redefinition, text whose value still equals the old definition's takes the new value, a default included; local overrides and attributes the new definition leaves out stay. The style panels show "+" only where the text differs from its style, including type with Auto alignment. Public reference: [Character and paragraph styles](https://web.archive.org/web/20260825113735/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/character-paragraph-styles.html). - **Text styles dragged onto the panel's buttons:** a style dragged from the Character Styles or Paragraph Styles panel onto Create New Style is copied (`charStyle.duplicate`, `paraStyle.duplicate`, which name the copy ` copy`) and the copy is highlighted; dragged onto Delete it is deleted (`charStyle.delete`, `paraStyle.delete`); the Normal style is not deleted. Each drop is one undo step. Public reference: [Character and paragraph styles](https://web.archive.org/web/20261015081534/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/character-paragraph-styles.html). - **Auto Leading outside the layout:** a paragraph's Justification… › Auto Leading () also sets the Leading the Character panel shows for Auto type (blank where the selected paragraphs differ), the leading the Alt+↑/↓ nudge (`type.step`) steps from, each paragraph's own, and the lines Fill with Placeholder Text counts in area type. Evidence: `ParaStyle::effective_leading` (`crates/doc/src/text.rs` test `paragraph_effective_leading_follows_auto_leading`), `tests_prefs::auto_leading_steps_and_fills_from_the_paragraph_auto_leading`, `panels::character` test `leading_field_shows_the_paragraph_auto_leading`. - **The text style panel menus' Duplicate and Delete:** in the Character Styles and Paragraph Styles panel menus, Duplicate highlights the copy, as Create New Style highlights the new style, and Delete leaves no style highlighted, as the Delete button does, so Duplicate, Clear Overrides, Redefine and Style Options are disabled until another style is clicked. A highlighted style that is renamed in Style Options or deleted by a command is no longer highlighted either. The tests `panels::text_styles::tests::panel_menu_duplicate_and_delete_update_the_highlighted_style` and `a_highlighted_style_that_is_no_longer_listed_is_not_highlighted` cover this. Public reference: [Character and paragraph styles](https://web.archive.org/web/20261015081534/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/character-paragraph-styles.html). - **Names of new styles and symbols:** `charStyle.new` and `paraStyle.new` trim the white space around the name they are given, as `charStyle.rename` and `paraStyle.rename` do, and refuse a name that is then empty; Duplicate names its copy from the trimmed name. `symbol.new` and `symbol.duplicate` trim the name as Symbol Options does, and `library.use` adds a library's text style under its trimmed name. Public reference: [Character and paragraph styles](https://web.archive.org/web/20260825113735/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/character-paragraph-styles.html). - **Naming a new text style first:** Alt-click on New in the Character Styles or Paragraph Styles panel opens New Character Style or New Paragraph Style (`ui.newCharStyle`, `ui.newParaStyle`) with the name a plain click's style gets; OK makes the style from the text selected when the dialog opened, and Cancel adds none. Tests `panels::text_styles::tests::alt_clicking_new_character_style_asks_for_its_name` and `alt_clicking_new_paragraph_style_asks_for_its_name`. Public reference: [Default keyboard shortcuts](https://web.archive.org/web/20260726060015/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html), "Set options (except for Actions, Brushes, Swatches, and Symbols panels)". - **Width Point Edit:** Shift-double-click enables Adjust Adjoining Width Points; plain double-click and direct opening retain the default. Tool dispatch and headless dialog tests cover neighboring widths, Undo/Redo and Cancel. Public reference: [Variable-width strokes](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/stroke-object.html). Moved from the ROADMAP's "Shipped so far" on 2026-10-10. Update it when a feature lands. - **New ruler guides (G1):** Alt swaps orientation while dragging from either ruler, following the [public shortcut reference](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html). Preview, snapping and final placement use the current axis. Tool and egui event tests exercise both rulers, modifier changes, cancellation and one-step Undo/Redo; existing-guide Alt-copy and ruler-origin gestures are unchanged. - **Width-point finite-arithmetic follow-up (G1/M3):** Adjoining adjustments avoid intermediate overflow; non-finite normalized or resulting factors are rejected before committing. Engine regressions in `tests/widthpoints.rs` cover finite extremes, small nonzero results, atomic rejection, Undo/Redo and native save/reopen. Historical focused validation on the `a3357121` integration observed 2 expected RED failures with 11 passing controls, then all 13 tests passing with the repair; none were ignored. All three added regressions passed in current full CI. Scores and hours unchanged. - **Width-point creation (G1):** double-click a stroked segment with the Width tool to open Width Point Edit using sampled side widths. OK creates the point and optionally adjusts adjoining widths in one undo step. Cancel or Delete discards a prospective point without changing the document or redo history. Command and pointer tests cover profiles, compound paths, adjoining adjustment, existing-point editing and Undo/Redo. Message-catalog checks and full CI passed; the original capture verifies opening and Cancel, and the dialog layout was reviewed (2026-10-13: 28 focused Width tests, all seven cargo xtask ci stages, and a headless opening/Cancel capture with original PNG review). [Variable-width strokes](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/stroke-object.html). - **Escape deselects width points:** with the Width tool, Escape deselects the selected width points, on the key the reference app's [Default keyboard shortcuts](https://web.archive.org/web/20260726060015/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html) page lists for deselecting a width point. The path, its widths and the undo history do not change. With no width point selected, Escape does what it does with the other tools, such as leaving isolation mode. - **Rulers (#1212):** drag the intersection to preview and set a document zero point, or double-click it to reset to the active artboard's top-left. Transform, Properties and Control X/Y fields measure from it and convert entered positions back to absolute command coordinates. The origin survives every native format version and compression; geometry, guides and patterns stay in place. Public reference: [Use rulers](https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/illustrator/desktop/measure-and-align/grids-and-guides/use-rulers.html). - **Global and artboard rulers:** View › Rulers › Change to Global / Artboard Rulers (Cmd+Alt+R, `view.globalRulers`). A new document has artboard rulers: the rulers and the Transform, Properties, Control and Info X/Y count from the active artboard's top-left corner, or the zero point dragged out for that artboard, which moves with it; with global rulers one document zero point serves every artboard. Guide readouts and Shift ruler-tick snapping follow the same zero point. The mode is saved with the document; files from before it open with global rulers, as they measured. Regression tests: `engine/tests/it/ruler_origin.rs`, `ui-egui/src/tests/ruler_origin.rs`, `tools/src/rulerguide.rs`. Public reference: [About rulers](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/measure-and-align/grids-and-guides/about-rulers.html). - **Video display options (#2849):** Artboard Options' Show Video Safe Areas and Video Ruler Pixel Aspect Ratio, and View › Rulers › Show Video Rulers ([Set video display options for artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/organize-manage-artboards/set-video-display-options-for-artboards.html)). Each artboard has its own (`artboard.setProps`/`artboard.new` `showVideoSafeAreas`, `videoRulerPixelAspectRatio` 0.1–10, default 1), set in one undo step and written to the native format only when on or not 1, so other documents save byte for byte as before. The help page names the safe areas without numbers; our choice is [EBU R 95](https://tech.ebu.ch/docs/r/r095.pdf)'s (note 5): the canvas outlines the action-safe area 3.5% and the title-safe (graphics-safe) area 5% in from each edge, 1 point wide and turned with the view; exports and print leave them out. Show Video Rulers (`view.videoRulers`) shows the rulers counting the active artboard in pixels from its top-left corner, whatever the ruler origin: a pixel is as many points wide as the ratio and one point tall, so a 720 × 480 pt artboard at 0.9 reads 800 × 480. Hide Video Rulers returns them to the General unit; Shift ruler-tick snapping of new guides keeps the General unit. Regression tests: `tests/panelcmds.rs` (`artboard_video_display_options_*`, `artboard_display_marks_stay_out_of_exports`), `tests/docsetup.rs` (`an_artboard_shows_its_video_safe_areas`), `canvas.rs` (`video_rulers_count_the_artboard_in_pixels_of_its_aspect_ratio`), `tests/ruler_origin.rs` (`show_video_rulers_counts_the_active_artboard_in_pixels`), `dialogs/tests.rs` (`artboard_options_show_video_display_options`). - **Saved views (G7):** View › New View… and Edit Views… ([public source](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/viewing-artwork.html): up to 25 views per document, saved with it, renamed or deleted in Edit Views, chosen from the bottom of the View menu). Each view keeps the zoom, centre and rotation; the View menu lists all 25 (`view.goto1`–`view.goto25`), and Edit Views… lists them to rename or delete, applied together as one undo step. A file's views are checked when it opens (at most 25, unique names up to 255 characters, a finite centre and a positive zoom). Tests: `saved_views_round_trip_and_from_a_file_are_tidied` (`crates/format/tests/prop_format.rs`), `crates/engine/src/cmd/views.rs`, `crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/edit_views.rs` and `every_saved_view_is_listed_at_the_bottom_of_the_view_menu` (`crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs`). - **Document Setup modal handoff:** Document Setup → Edit Artboards applies valid settings, closes the dialog and activates the Artboard tool. Pointer-click tests cover successful handoff, invalid settings, OK, Cancel and Undo in `dialogs/document_setup.rs`. - **Control bar with the Artboard tool:** while the Artboard tool is in use, the Control bar shows the active artboard's controls in place of the object controls: Preset, Portrait and Landscape, New Artboard, Delete Artboard, the Name field, Artboard Options, Rearrange All Artboards, the Transform link, Move and Scale Artwork with Artboard and, while the bar has room, the reference point with X and Y, and W and H with the Constrain Width and Height Proportions link. Each runs the command its Properties or Transform panel counterpart runs (`artboard.setProps`, `artboard.new`, `artboard.delete`, `tool.options {tool: "artboard"}`), and the reference point is the one the Transform panel uses. In an 800-point window the controls up to the Transform link fit, Move and Scale Artwork with Artboard show as their boxes alone with their names in tooltips, and the link opens the Transform panel with the artboard's position and size. Pointer and key tests in `panels/artboards.rs` cover the controls, W about the reference point, the orientation and the name. Public reference: [Using multiple artboards](https://web.archive.org/web/20210925094818/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/using-multiple-artboards.html) (archived copy). - **Names of new and renamed artboards, brushes and patterns:** `artboard.new` and `artboard.setProps` trim the white space around the name they are given, as the Artboards panel's rename does, and a blank name gives the artboard its default name, Artboard N for the Nth artboard. `brush.new`, `brush.duplicate`, `brush.options`, `object.pattern.make`, `object.pattern.saveCopy` and `pattern.options` trim the name as the Brush Options dialog and the Pattern Options panel do, and compare the trimmed name with the names there are; a blank name gives the name each command gives when there is none, and Brush Options and Pattern Options keep the name. Tests in `tests/panelcmds.rs`, `tests/brushsym.rs` and `tests/pattern.rs` cover each command. Public references: [Using multiple artboards](https://web.archive.org/web/20210925094818/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/using-multiple-artboards.html), [Brushes](https://web.archive.org/web/20251018101754/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/brushes.html) and [Create and edit patterns](https://web.archive.org/web/20211031180358/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/create-edit-patterns.html) (archived copies). - **Pattern names and swatch names:** `pattern.options` refuses a new name that another pattern, a swatch or a color group has. It takes a name that only the pattern's own swatches have. The reference page does not say what happens when the new name is taken; the refusal follows VectorCraft's rule that swatches and color groups share one namespace (`Document::swatch_name_taken`), which `swatch.new` and `swatch.edit` also follow. A rename gives the new name only to the pattern's swatches that had the old one; any other swatch with the old name keeps it, and art linked to that swatch stays linked. `object.pattern.make` and `object.pattern.saveCopy` number a color group's name as they number a swatch's. Tests in `tests/pattern.rs` cover each command. Public reference: [Create and edit patterns](https://web.archive.org/web/20211031180358/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/create-edit-patterns.html) (archived copy). - **A clip group in Properties:** with one clip group selected, the panel has Edit Clipping Path and Edit Contents at its top, under the Clip Group heading, which select the clipping path or the clipped art for the selection tools to transform alone, as Object › Clipping Mask does (: with a clip group selected, the tutorial uses Edit Clipping Path at the top of the Properties panel to select the mask for editing, and uses Edit Contents to select the masked art). Edit Contents shows only when the group clips something. Not checked against the reference app: whether Properties keeps the buttons while the clipping path or the contents is selected; the Control bar has no clip-group buttons here. Evidence: `panels::properties::tests::one_clip_group_has_edit_clipping_path_and_edit_contents_at_the_top`. - **Contextual controls in Properties:** the [Properties panel overview](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/get-started/learn-the-basics/properties-panel-overview.html) lists controls that appear for particular selections and tools; Properties has them, each running the existing command. Quick Actions has Blend Options for one selected blend while the Blend tool is in use (the Blend Options dialog, OK one undo step) and Merge Live Paint when a Live Paint group is selected with more paths and nothing Live Paint refuses (`livePaint.merge`). Appearance has the stroke's Variable Width Profile list, the Control bar's, with the Width tool or when the stroke has a variable width (`stroke.set {profile}`), and beside fx the Delete icon: with one effect on the one selected object (its own or a fill's or stroke's) its name and an icon that removes it (`effect.remove`), with several an icon that opens the Appearance panel, as the overview describes. With Direct Selection and corners of one path selected, Corner and Corner Radius set the kind and radius of those corners (`object.setLiveShape`); a live rectangle's and polygon's own rows already do. Each edit is one undo step. The overview's Variable Font icon was already in Character. Not checked against the reference app: whether Merge needs two Live Paint groups (the overview speaks of several selected groups; `livePaint.merge` takes a group and paths), and where exactly each control sits in its section. Evidence: `panels::properties::tests::{blend_options_is_a_quick_action_for_one_blend_with_the_blend_tool, merge_live_paint_is_a_quick_action_for_a_live_paint_group_and_more, the_width_profile_shows_for_a_variable_width_or_the_width_tool, direct_selected_corners_show_their_kind_and_radius, one_effect_has_a_delete_icon_in_appearance}`. - **Edit Artboards in Properties:** the active artboard's name is a field. Typing a new name and pressing Enter or clicking elsewhere renames that artboard in one undo step, as the Artboards panel's rename does (`artboard.setProps {index, name}`); pressing Escape or leaving the field empty keeps the old name. A click on the Artboard Options icon beside the field opens Artboard Options for the active artboard, as double-clicking the Artboard tool's button does (`tool.options {tool: "artboard"}`). Pointer and key tests in `panels/properties.rs` cover both. Public references: [Resize artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/add-edit-artboards/resize-artboards.html) and [Create and add new artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/add-edit-artboards/add-new-artboards.html). - **Artboard background colors:** each artboard can have a background color (`artboard.setProps {index, color}`, `color: null` removes it). With the Artboard tool, Properties has a Fill row: its list sets None, White or Black, and its chip and its Color Picker… item open the Color Picker for the artboard. Artboard Options has a Background Color row with a list that sets None, White or Black, and a color button. The canvas draws the artboard's paper in the color, multiplied with the paper color while Simulate Colored Paper is on, and the transparency grid still covers it. The native format saves the color, and a document without colors saves as before. Exports and print do not draw the color. Engine, canvas, Properties, Color Picker and Artboard Options tests cover it. Public reference: [Apply colors to artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/organize-manage-artboards/add-background-color-to-artboards.html). - **Resizing several artboards:** with several artboards selected with the Artboard tool, a new W or H in Properties, the Transform panel or the Control bar, a preset or an orientation in Properties or the Control bar, and a new Width or Height in Artboard Options resize every selected artboard in one undo step (`artboard.setProps {artboards}`); with Scale Artwork with Artboard on, Properties, the Transform panel and the Control bar scale each object once, with the artboard it was inside before the change. The Transform panel, the Control bar and Artboard Options resize each one about its own reference point, a preset sizes each one in its own orientation, and X and Y still move the active artboard alone. Pointer and key tests in `panels/properties.rs`, dialog tests in `dialogs/tests.rs` and an engine test in `tests/xform.rs` cover them. Public references: [Artboard Enhancements In Illustrator CC](https://blog.adobe.com/en/publish/2017/11/10/artboard-enhancements-in-illustrator-cc) (a height and a width entered once resize every selected artboard) and [Using multiple artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/using-multiple-artboards.html) (2019). - **Artboard Escape routing:** Escape leaves Artboard editing for Selection; during a drag it first cancels the gesture. Headless egui key events cover idle Escape, active-drag cancellation and a subsequent Escape in `tests/distortkeys.rs`. - **Escape in the distort tools:** Escape during a Puppet Warp pin drag or turn, a Perspective Grid tool handle or plane widget drag, a Perspective Selection move, resize or plane widget drag, or a Liquify stroke cancels it: the art goes back to how the press found it, no undo step is added, and the tool stays chosen. Puppet Warp also selects again the pins selected before the press, and Escape during a Liquify Alt-drag puts the brush size back. Regression tests: `escape_cancels_*` in `crates/tools/src/distort/puppet.rs`, `perspective.rs` and `liquify.rs`, and `escape_cancels_a_puppet_warp_perspective_or_liquify_drag` in `tests/distortkeys.rs`. - **Shift with the Artboard tool:** a Shift-click adds an artboard to the selection or takes it out when the button comes up. A Shift-drag inside an artboard draws a new artboard there, and a Shift-drag on the pasteboard is a marquee that toggles the artboards it touches, as the [default keyboard shortcuts](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/default-keyboard-shortcuts.html) (a Shift-drag draws an artboard within an existing one) and [Using multiple artboards](https://web.archive.org/web/20210925094818/https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/using-multiple-artboards.html) (archived copy) describe. Shift no longer keeps an artboard move at 45° steps or a drawn artboard square. Escape during a marquee or while a new artboard is being drawn cancels it and keeps the Artboard tool. Pointer and key tests in `crates/tools/src/xform/artboard.rs` cover the four gestures and Escape. - **Artboard deletion keys:** Delete/Backspace delete selected boards in one Undo step, retaining the original first board in the current order when all are selected, as in the public [Delete artboards guide](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/add-edit-artboards/delete-artboards.html). The last board and active drags stay protected; neither key clears selected artwork. Headless shortcut regressions in `tests/distortkeys.rs` cover reordered boards, artwork, saved state and Undo/Redo. - **Locked artboards:** a click in the Artboards panel's lock column locks or unlocks an artboard in one undo step (`artboard.setProps {index, locked}`), and the native format saves the lock. The Artboard tool doesn't move, copy, resize or delete a locked artboard, Rearrange and Fit to Artwork Bounds leave it as it is, and its name isn't edited on the canvas. The art on it (each object whose bounds overlap it, a group as one object) acts as locked art until it is unlocked: clicks, marquees, `select.set`, `select.all` and the tools pass over it, and commands that act on the selection leave it; art drawn or pasted onto it stays selected and editable until the selection leaves it out. Tests in `crates/doc/src/lib.rs`, `tests/panelcmds.rs`, `xform/artboard.rs`, `panels/artboards.rs` and `canvas.rs` cover them. Public references: [Lock artboards](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/create-manage-artboards/organize-manage-artboards/lock-artboards.html) and [Managing Artboards in Illustrator](https://creativepro.com/managing-artboards-in-illustrator/). - **Linux RPM packaging:** 64-bit runtime capabilities replace Fedora-specific required package names (#1275); glibc 2.35, libm and libgcc_s are declared alongside dynamically loaded xkbcommon and Vulkan/EGL. Generated x86_64/aarch64 metadata and isolated synthetic-provider resolution checked; real-distro install/start-up QA remains pending. - **Linux file associations:** the desktop entry lists the MIME type of every format File › Open reads but PSD, PSB, `.ps` PostScript, Targa and PCX, `.ai`, `.ait` and EPS included, and the MIME package declares the types shared-mime-info lacks (VectorCraft documents and templates, `.ait`, Affinity), so file managers list VectorCraft under Open With for them, as Finder does on macOS. `the_linux_desktop_entry_opens_every_readable_format` in `apps/vectorcraft/src/main.rs` checks both files against `OPEN_EXTS`. On Debian 13, Ubuntu 24.04 and Fedora 42, `desktop-file-validate` accepts the desktop entry, `update-mime-database` accepts the MIME package, and `gio` registers the app for every one of these types. - **Architecture:** 19+ crates with enforced layering (`cargo xtask layers`). Every action is a command (~400 engine + ~50 UI). Undo is unlimited via structural sharing. `command.batch` runs several commands as one transaction. - **Automation:** - Variables: Update Data Set writes what the art holds into the active data set for the variables that data set holds, and keeps the data set's value for a variable whose objects are locked or inside a locked layer or group; `dataset.update {all: true}` also adds the other variables that the art reports a value for. - Variables: `dataset.select`, `dataset.next` and `dataset.prev` rewrite type and apply the other values on hidden objects and in hidden layers and groups, which stay hidden unless a visibility value shows them, so a layer shown later holds the selected data set's text; objects that are locked or in a locked layer or group are skipped. - Variables: `dataset.select`, `dataset.next` and `dataset.prev` name the area type and type on a path whose text they rewrote and that doesn't fit, in the reply's `overflow` key, as `text.setText` does. - Variables: when no object is bound to a variable that the data set has a value for, for example after Import Data Sets… defines new variables without binding them, choosing the data set in the Variables panel or stepping to it with the panel's arrows shows a status message, and `dataset.select`, `dataset.next` and `dataset.prev` add the message to the reply as `warning`. - Variables: Lock Variables (`variable.lock`, in the Variables panel's bottom bar and menu) stops variables from being defined, deleted or renamed until they are unlocked, while objects can still be bound and unbound and data sets still change and apply; the lock is saved with the document. - Batch…: Override Save and Override Export name each file with the extension of the format the step writes, however the step spells the format (`.svg` and `SVG` give `.svg`, `png8` gives `.png`), in `action.batch`. - Actions panel (record/playback, persisted), generic parameter dialogs for every "…" command. - Batch… over data sets names each file after the document and the data set (`action.batch`). It writes `/`, `\`, `:`, `<`, `>`, `"`, `|`, `?`, `*` and control characters in the data set's name as `-`, and adds `-2`, `-3`… to a name an earlier data set used. - Export for Screens: the dialog's Example line shows the path of the file the export writes first, sub-folder included, named as the export names it, for the first chosen artboard, asset, layer or object (`document.exportForScreens`). - Save for Web: Preview in Browser writes each preview's page and images to a folder of its own inside `VectorCraft Save for Web` in the system's temporary folder. A later preview, from the same app or another one running, does not overwrite an earlier one. Each preview first removes the preview folders there that are an hour old or older and, on Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, belong to the current user; it leaves other files and folders alone. The folders a preview makes there are open to their owner only on those systems. When `VectorCraft Save for Web` is a link or is not a folder, or on those systems belongs to another user or can be written by other users, the preview goes to a new folder of its own in the temporary folder, which a later preview removes once it is an hour old (`file.saveForWeb.browser`). - Export for Screens, Save for Web (slice images, and files named after the document's title) and the Libraries panel name files with the characters Windows does not allow written as `-` and with a `-` after a Windows device name such as `CON`, on every platform (`document.exportForScreens`, `document.exportForWeb`, `library.create`). - Variables (data merge): text, visibility and image variables bound to objects (an object may carry several), dataset rows applied in one undo step (`variable.*`, `dataset.*`) from a Variables panel and Window › Variables, with dialogs to define, bind and edit, Make Text/Visibility/Image Dynamic, Capture/Update Data Set, CSV import/export (`dataset.import` / `dataset.export`), and a row in italics when an edit leaves the art not matching it; an image dataset value is a file path and apply keeps the object's bounds; bindings let go of deleted art and locked art is left alone; every command, like the rest, is drivable over MCP and the CLI. - Variables: Import Data Sets… (`dataset.import`) reads tab-separated files as well as comma-separated ones, and files without a `name` column, whose rows take the first free names Data Set 1, Data Set 2 and so on. An import error about a row's values or name gives the file line the row starts on. - Variables: Import Data Sets… (`dataset.import`) defines the variables a file's header names that the document lacks, unbound. `#Shown` defines a visibility variable, `@Photo` defines an image variable, and a header without a prefix defines a text variable. A header that is a variable's exact name keeps naming it, and any other `%` header (graph data files) is refused. - Variables: Load Variable Library… in the Variables panel menu (`variable.loadLibrary`) replaces the document's variables and data sets with a variable library's, read from its XML file, in one undo step: every variable is deleted with its bindings and values, and every data set is deleted; then the library's text variables are defined, unbound, and its data sets take the text of each value's `p` elements, one paragraph each. Variables of other kinds are left out with a warning that names their kinds. - JSON-lines control channel with real egui pointer and keyboard injection. - Synthetic input validates complete gestures before queue mutation: at most 256 drag steps, 16 clicks and 1,024 pending events; up to 64 control requests per frame, with later requests retained for the next frame (#1709). - The control server writes each reply through a 64 KiB buffer. On Windows 11 it sends the 17 MB `document.inspect` reply of a document with 50,000 objects on one layer to a client over loopback in 0.09 s instead of 34 s. - MCP server with 25 tools (drawing, text, effects, Pathfinder, transforms, graphs, text wrap, export, screenshots, any command), attached to the running app or headless. Tool descriptions and replies agree with the engine: format lists come from its format table, `save_file` says it keeps the document's own format, `inspect_document` reports the paint type's characters show, and selection exports report the encoder's warnings. `--automation-read-root` / `--automation-write-root` (on `vectorcraft-cli mcp` and on `vectorcraft --control`) confine the files commands read and write to chosen folders, links followed, with the flags PhotoCraft takes (#832); each flag may be given more than once, a path inside any of its folders being allowed (#3546, `file_access::tests::several_roots_of_a_kind_each_grant_their_access`, `cli::mcp_automation_roots_take_several_folders`). A long export can be cancelled (`notifications/cancelled` stops it at the next page or group and writes nothing), reports page progress to a client that sent a progress token, and does not make other requests wait: engine-free ones answer at once, the rest are refused as busy after two seconds (#2165, #2171, #2172). - MCP protocol: five prompts (`prompts/list` / `prompts/get`: poster, icon set, recolour, trace-and-style, export set), `completion/complete` for prompt arguments and template variables read from the live catalogues (formats, effect ids, command ids, trace presets, swatch and object ids), four resource templates (`vectorcraft://object/{id}`, `//command/{id}`, `//effect/{id}`, `//swatch/{name}`) so an agent reads one thing instead of the whole document, and `logging/setLevel` with `notifications/message`. `window.panel` ids are case-insensitive (display labels work too), `vectorcraft://object/{id}` reads through `document.node {summary: true}` (the same reply bytes from one lookup instead of summarizing the whole document: a leaf read on a 2,000-object document drops from ~20 ms to ~0.06 ms), large containers slice with `document.node {depth?, childLimit?}` (truncated levels report `childCount`), `document.inspect` and the `inspect_document` tool slice the same way so a depth-0 read is the layer skeleton (~9.7 KB instead of ~2 MB on a 2,000-object document), `document.find` locates nodes by name/kind/text with ancestor paths, and the CLI sweeps the protocol surface over stdio against the compiled binary. `docs/mcp.md` has a Protocol section covering the capability table and what is deliberately absent (subscriptions, progress, cancellation, sampling, elicitation, Streamable HTTP — all of which need the transport to interleave reads). - Headless CLI (`vectorcraft-cli run`, `convert`, `info`, `bench`, `perf`, `mcp`). A `run` step, like a `command_batch` step over MCP, can use an earlier step's result (`"$1.id"`, #785); `run --commands FILE` (or `-` for standard input) reads the steps from a JSON array or JSON Lines, past the Windows command-line limit (#3147, `apps/vectorcraft-cli/tests/it/cli.rs` `run_reads_*`, `run_refuses_malformed_commands_naming_the_step`). - File › Scripts › Check Script… reads a script written for Illustrator (`.jsx`, `.jsxinc` or a compiled `.jsxbin`) without running any of it and reports what it needs (the document model, files, dialogs, menu commands, features only Illustrator has), what it would do outside the document, the menu commands and document-model members it uses, its directives and included files, and the problems that would stop it loading (`script.check`, which also reads `.js` files); File › Open and drag-and-drop show the report for `.jsx`, `.jsxinc` and `.jsxbin` files. - **UI:** Illustrator 2026 layout restyled to measured values: - Medium Dark theme, categorized and Advanced toolbars (a tool group's flyout opens on a right press, a long press or a press on its corner triangle), 35 pt document tabs, 33 pt panel tabs. - Hint bar, contextual task bar, 19 dock panels with ≡ menus. - Window › SVG Interactivity attaches JavaScript to the selected objects' events (`onclick`, `onmouseover` and 17 more) and links JavaScript files to the document (Link JavaScript Files…); SVG export writes the events as event attributes and the files as `
