After imageTrace.setView, screenshot and render_preview still drew the
tracing result, because ui.render renders with the export options and only
the canvas turns on trace views. Only the app window showed the view.
ui.render now takes traceViews. With traceViews: true, Image Trace objects
draw in the view set with imageTrace.setView, as on the canvas, both
headless and in the running app. screenshot and render_preview take
traceViews and pass it on; without it they draw the tracing result, as
exports do. The trace-and-style prompt names the argument.
A supersampled render drew Outline view's lines, type outlines and dotted
guides as little as a quarter of an output pixel wide, so they came out
pale gray. The renderer now scales those widths and the guides' dashes by
the supersampling factor in the larger frame, so the lines stay one output
pixel wide.
Docs: docs/mcp.md (render_preview, screenshot), docs/control-protocol.md
(ui.render).
draw_path, draw_shape and object.setProps take opacity in percent (0-100),
but the document.inspect / document.node summary behind doc_inspect,
inspect_document and vectorcraft://object/{id} reported the stored 0-1
fraction under the same name. An agent that read 0.55 and wrote it back
got a nearly invisible object.
The summary now adds opacityPct (0-100, rounded to 1/100 of a percent)
beside the unchanged opacity, and the tool, resource and command
descriptions say which scale each field uses. Round-trip test in the mcp
crate: draw at 55 %, read 55 back from doc_inspect, inspect_document and
the object resource, write it back unchanged.
Since #3971, open_file, save_file, export and screenshot made every path
absolute against the server's working directory, headless as well as
with --connect. Headless, the engine runs in the server's process and
resolves a relative path against the same directory, so the conversion
is only needed for a connected app. It also made a relative path fail
headless when the absolute path is not UTF-8.
The server now makes these paths absolute only for a connected app, as
docs/mcp.md describes. Headless, it sends them as given.
With nothing selected and no ids, set_paint changes only the paint for
new art, but its reply was the same as when it painted objects, so a
caller could not tell that no object changed.
paint.setFill, paint.setStroke, paint.none, paint.lastColor,
paint.lastGradient and stroke.set now reply {objects}: how many objects
took the paint, as the commands resolve their targets (a selected group
counts the objects inside it). set_paint adds the largest of those
counts to its reply as `objects`, and when it is 0 a `note` says that
only the paint for new art changed. The tool description and the
set_paint row in docs/mcp.md describe the reply.
With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, a document with no visible art gets only the artboard files. The useArtboards and range descriptions, the document.export and document.exportEps params text, the control protocol and the parity line now say so.
The server lists two names for several calls (command_list and
list_commands, command_run and run_command, doc_inspect and
inspect_document, ui_inspect and inspect_ui, ui_screenshot and
screenshot with window:true), but no description said so, and the two
listing and running pairs take different argument names. Each
description now names its pair and the argument that differs, and undo
and redo name each other.
ui_screenshot took no arguments and returned the window at its full
size, which can be several megapixels on a large display.
ui_screenshot and screenshot {window: true} now take an optional
max_side (1..4096) that scales the returned image down to that many
pixels on its longer side. The reply's text gives the returned size as
width/height and the capture's as capturedWidth/capturedHeight; a file
written to path keeps the full capture. max_side on an artboard render
is an error that points to scale. render_preview reads its max_side
through the same check.
docs/mcp.md describes the pairs and the new argument.
A document opened or created between edit.undoGroup.begin and
edit.undoGroup.end opens an undo group of its own with the begun
group's name, so an atomic command_batch that starts with file.new or
document.open is one undo step in the new document. The group opens
after the command that opens the document: when that command also
edits it (a command.batch), those edits stay the command's own undo
step, and a canceled group keeps them, so the journal still replays.
Both commands also run with no document open, and a command.batch that
fails rolls back a begun group. Switching to a document that was
already open does not open a group in it.
With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, EPS export now writes a
central file under the path's own name before the file of each artboard.
The central file contains the whole document, and its bounding box is
the visible art, as in an export without Use Artboards. An export of a
single chosen artboard still writes one file at the path's name, and
Export for Screens still writes one EPS per artboard. When no art shows,
only the artboard files are written.
Docs: the useArtboards params text, the MCP export tool's range text,
docs/mcp.md, docs/control-protocol.md and docs/target-app-parity.md.
With --connect, open_file, save_file, export and screenshot {path} sent a
relative path to the app unchanged, and the app resolved it against its
own working directory (/ when started from the Finder). A relative path
then named a different file than it does headless, where the server
resolves it against its own working directory.
The server now makes these paths absolute against its working directory
before it sends them, including export's options.path and the path a
screenshot reply reports. Paths inside run_command and command_batch
params go to the app as given. docs/mcp.md describes the rule.
ui.render, which render_preview and screenshot call in the headless
session and in the app, rendered the artboard with the canvas options:
8-bit compositing and edges smoothed shape by shape. A PNG export
composites in floating point and supersamples edges, so the preview
showed edge colors the exported file does not have, most visibly where
shapes meet edge to edge.
ui.render now renders with the options of a PNG export on white, so
its pixels equal the export's at the same scale. render_preview also
no longer enlarges an artboard smaller than max_side: with the default
max_side of 1024, a 612 x 792 page came back as an interpolated
791 x 1024 image, and it now comes back at 612 x 792. docs/mcp.md and
docs/control-protocol.md describe this.
The MCP drawing tools ran the creating command (path.create, shape.*)
and only then paint.setFill, paint.setStroke, stroke.set,
object.setProps and effect.apply, each as a command of its own.
check_draw_options checked dash, cap, join, opacity, name and effects up
front, but not the paints: a fill or stroke the engine can't read
(stroke: "currentColor"), or a swatch the document lacks, failed after
the object was made, so the call returned an error and left the path,
its undo step and its SVG node behind. Each styling command was also an
undo step of its own.
The tools now send the creating command and the styling commands as one
command.batch (crates/mcp/src/tools.rs, draw): the engine rolls the
whole batch back when a step fails, so a refused paint leaves no object,
no undo step and nothing in the SVG, and a good call is one undo step
named as the creating command names its own (Pen, Rectangle, …). The
styling steps act on the new object, which the creating command selects,
with item: null (its whole appearance), as the ids did before. The
reply gives the failed step's own error, without the batch's prefix.
docs/mcp.md says so.
Test: tests_drawopts::a_bad_paint_draws_nothing (invalid fill, stroke,
a missing swatch and a non-numeric strokeWidth on draw_path and
draw_shape: error, node count, undo history and SVG export unchanged;
a good call adds one undo step named Pen / Rectangle). It fails without
the change (draw_path with stroke "currentColor" drew a path) and passes
with it; the other draw option and command_batch tests still pass.
`vectorcraft-cli run/convert --scale` and the MCP export tool's `scale`
are raster pixels per point, but they were passed to every export, and
DXF reads `scale` as drawing units per unit: a 2x PNG next to a DXF
doubled the drawing and left it unitless ($INSUNITS 0). They now go
only to raster formats. DXF's own scale stays reachable through the
format options.
The command catalogue is about 340,000 characters, more than many MCP
clients show, and `query` (the name agents reach for first) was refused as
an unknown argument. command_list and list_commands now take `query` as
another name for `filter`, `menu` to keep the commands under a menu path
("Object > Path"), and `brief` to leave out each command's params text,
which is most of the catalogue; the params of one command are a filtered
listing away.
A step whose id is draw_path or draw_shape runs that tool with its params,
checked as tools/call checks arguments; its result is the tool's, so later
steps can use "$N.id". The reply lists the ids the drawing steps made
under created. The unknown-argument check is shared with tools/call.
The drawing tools style the object they draw in the same call: dash, cap
and join go to the stroke.set that strokeWidth already sends, opacity and
name to object.setProps, and effects are applied in order as apply_effect
does. The options are checked (effect ids against effect.list) before
anything is drawn, so a bad one leaves no half-styled object behind.
document.export, document.serialize and document.exportSelection write
a PDF-compatible .ai (format: "ai"), and document.formats lists ai as
writable, but none of their params texts named it. The params text of
document.exportSelection named only png, jpg, webp, svg, svgz and pdf,
although the command writes all 20 writable formats. The description
of the MCP export tool and its row in docs/mcp.md named every format
of the tool's format enum except ai, and the range text and the row
said that only PDF writes several artboards.
The three params texts now list every format their command writes,
and document.export's range and useArtboards texts name .ai beside
PDF. The MCP export tool's description names ai, and its artboard and
range texts say that .ai, like PDF, writes one page per artboard. The
range text and the row also say that SVG, SVGZ and EPS write one file
per chosen artboard, and that rasters, DXF, EMF and WMF do so with
options.useArtboards: true.
Docs: docs/mcp.md (the export tool).
The server read stdio lines and remote replies without any byte bound, answered batches of any size, and command_batch kept every step result: one faulty peer or batch could allocate and work without bound. Request lines are now read in bounded chunks (16 MiB; longer lines get a -32600 reply, are skipped, and framing continues), protocol batches hold at most 64 messages, control-channel replies past 256 MiB drop the connection with the usual uncertainty error, command_batch takes at most 256 steps and keeps at most 8 MiB of step results (past that the batch stops with the reason, still closing its atomic undo group). Eight new tests cover the line/batch/step/result caps and the atomic-group close; docs/mcp.md and the command_batch tool text document them. cargo test -p vectorcraft-mcp passes.
text.create, text.createInPath and the MCP add_text tool now take a
`justify` (auto|left|center|right|justifyAll, as text.setStyle). Point
type already laid out centred or right-aligned text around its origin;
it just could not be made that way, so scripts measured the bounds and
moved the text. Changing it afterwards stays text.setStyle {justify}.
text.create, text.createInPath, text.setText and text.setStyle answer with
overflow: [id…] for the area type and type on a path whose text doesn't fit (left
out when all fits), and MCP add_text with overflow: true. add_text takes area
type's fit and fitMinPercent.
An agent's build over MCP left one undo step per batch step (about 280
for one job). `command_batch` takes `atomic: true` (and an optional
`label` naming the step) to make the whole batch one undo step. It runs
the batch in an undo group, opened and closed by the new commands
`edit.undoGroup.begin {label?}` and `edit.undoGroup.end {cancel?}`, so
every backend (headless or the connected app) supports it.

DXF already outlines type unless preserve: editability, so say so next to
the outlineText flag; reword the new-art sentence and point to paint.default.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Omitted paint fields keep the current appearance, so agents can get a black outline when they only set a fill. Document the initial white fill and 1 pt black stroke and recommend explicit paint for outline-free art.
Clarify SVG/SVGZ outlineText versus PDF options.advanced.outlineText and PDF's live-text default, noting DXF also accepts the top-level flag. Descriptions and documentation only; drawing and export behavior are unchanged.
render_preview only rendered the first artboard, so an agent couldn't
look at pages 2 and on of a multi-artboard document without switching
to screenshot. It now takes an optional 0-based `artboard` (as
screenshot does) and refuses an index the document doesn't have.

object.align with neither horizontal nor vertical returned success
and moved nothing. The command palette, and a key bound to it in
Keyboard Shortcuts, run it with no params. It now returns
"give horizontal or vertical", as object.distribute already did.
An action recorded while Align ran from the palette or a bound key
contains an object.align step with no params. Playing that action now
fails at that step, and command.batch rolls back the whole action.
Values outside a parameter's choices were read as another choice or
ignored. Align ignored an unknown horizontal or vertical and aligned
to the selection for an unknown to value. Distribute read an unknown
direction as center. Distribute Spacing and Shear read any axis other
than "vertical" as horizontal, and Reflect read any axis other than
"horizontal" or a number as vertical. A bounds or to value that was
not a string fell back to the default, and a spacing that was not a
number gave automatic spacing. The commands now return an error that
names such a value, before they move anything or record an undo
step. When a to, bounds, axis or spacing value is missing or null,
the command uses the parameter's default: Distribute Spacing without
an axis spaces the objects horizontally.
The run_command description and docs/mcp.md showed object.align with
an align param it does not have; they now use horizontal. The new
status-bar messages have rows in the de, es, fr, it, ja, ru and uk
catalogs.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
add_text passed `color` to text.create only, and text.createInPath built its own character
style without a colour, so type on a path and path-based area type took the current fill.
text.createInPath now uses the same new-type style as text.create (size, font, style, color,
else the current fill), and add_text sends `color` on both routes.
The MCP test draws a blue rectangle (the current fill), turns it into on-path and area type
with color #ff0000, and reads red back through inspect_document.

# ROADMAP.md
A graph's data can now hold blank cells: an empty CSV cell, a null in
`rows` (any cell that isn't a finite number), the rest of a short row,
or a row that has only a label.
- Columns, bars and stacked segments leave a blank cell out instead of
drawing a zero-height mark.
- Line and scatter graphs break their lines around it and draw no
marker there; the value axis ignores it.
- Area, pie and radar graphs draw it as 0, which is what it adds to
them.
The help pages don't describe blank cells, so this is our own choice:
a cell with no value has nothing to draw, which also matches how a
series with a missing year reads in a report.
In the file a blank cell keeps a 0 in `rows` and is listed in a new
`blanks` field ([category, series] pairs, written only when there are
any). A version that doesn't know blanks ignores the field and reads
the zeros, so files still open there, and files without blanks are
unchanged.
A number in straight quotes is a label, as the help page on graph
labels says (a year as a category name, for one). The CSV reader used
to strip the quotes first and read it as a value. Label columns are now
decided for the whole column: once any row starts with a label, every
row's first cell is its label, so a row with an empty label no longer
shifts its values one place left. The data window writes a header row,
labels that are empty, read as numbers or have spaces around them in
quotes, and blanks as empty cells, so they come back as they were.
graph.setData {} returns blanks in `rows` as null, so the rows it
returns can be edited and sent back. A label-only row keeps its place
with blank values; a row with neither a value nor a label is dropped,
and a first row that is a label followed by empty cells (`Year,,`) is
still read as a header with no series names.
The data grid is built in full for drawing and for the data window, so
it now stops at 10,000 categories of 256 series, which keeps a file
with one very long row from allocating without bound.
Behaviour (quoted labels): Add graph labels and data sets:
https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/automate-visualize-data/visualize-data/add-graph-labels-and-data-sets.html
vectorcraft-cli mcp and vectorcraft --control take the flags PhotoCraft
takes. While roots are in force, every path a command reads (open, place,
relink, SVG image links, library and profile loads, plug-ins, preset
imports, font searches) must lie inside the read root and every path it
writes (save, export, package, Export for Screens and for Web, print to
file, captures, library saves) inside the write root. Paths are made
absolute, links are followed (a missing file's nearest folder's), and the
result is compared by whole components, ignoring case on Windows; `..`
below a missing folder, dangling links and device names are refused. A
root left out grants none of its access; without the flags nothing
changes.
The checks live in one place, vectorcraft_engine::file_access, consulted
by the engine's file helpers and the app's file services. The headless
server confines its whole process; the app confines control requests,
the frames carrying input they inject and the background saves they
start, leaving the person at the keyboard and the app's own folders
alone. The screenshot tool now has the backend write its file.

A run (vectorcraft-cli run, the MCP command_batch tool) had no way to use
an id an earlier step returned. A parameter string that is exactly
$N.path or $last.path now takes that value from step N's result
(0-based), e.g. {"id":"$1.id"}; $$ starts a literal $, and a
reference to nothing fails the step. Objects given to a command are now
used as given: an ids element or id that isn't an object id (or an
unresolved reference) fails instead of the command acting on the
selection. text.setRangeStyle styles the selected type object when no
id is given, as text.setStyle does.

Discord feedback: "EPS files are always rasterized: they open as bitmaps, in
other programs as vectors". Every EPS saved by Illustrator 2026 fell back to
its TIFF preview (`gcheck` was unknown), and cairo/Inkscape files stopped at
their first image (`status`), dropped masked images (ImageType 3) and failed
on mesh gradients; the warning didn't say where the program failed.
Fallback never silent:
- The warning names the PostScript error, the operator that raised it and
the named procedures it ran in, innermost first ("a PostScript error
(typecheck in `add`), in `inner` in `outer`"); errors caught by `stopped`
aren't reported. It reaches the status bar, document.open, app.open and
file.open (which now return document.open's result, so MCP's open_file over
the control channel gets it), and `vectorcraft-cli info` ("warnings").
- A file whose PostScript can't be read opens as its TIFF preview, else its
Windows metafile preview (as vectors, scaled to the bounding box), else its
EPSI bitmap. es @msg rows for the new messages.
Interpreter:
- Operators programs probe or use: gcheck/scheck, rootfont,
currentcolorrendering, currenthsbcolor, status, token, read,
bytesavailable, fileposition/setfileposition, resetfile, write*, pdfmark
(marks dropped, as Ghostscript does), execform, nulldevice, strokepath,
pathforall, user paths (ufill/ueofill/ustroke/uappend/upath/setbbox, the
encoded form too), setcachedevice2, findcolorrendering, cache, device and
VM queries, revision; (%stdout) (w) file gives a sink.
- `//name` is replaced by its value when read, inside procedures too.
- Tiling patterns become pattern swatches (their PaintProc drawn in pattern
space, one cell; uncoloured ones in the colour under them; makepattern
copies share one swatch); nested patterns stop at 8 levels.
- Type 3 fonts draw their glyphs (BuildGlyph/BuildChar, widths from
setcachedevice/setcharwidth) as outlines grouped per string, spaced by
ashow/widthshow/awidthshow/xshow/yshow/xyshow/kshow; glyphshow and
stringwidth/cshow use them.
- Shadings of types 1 and 4-7 become gradient meshes (data from arrays,
strings or files, packed or not, flags sharing edges), as fills through a
shading pattern too; sampled functions (type 0) are evaluated;
GradientMesh::coons/triangle are shared with PDF import.
- ImageType 3 masked images, interleaved by sample, by row or in separate
sources; ReusableStreamDecode reads its data when made; Flate/LZW PNG and
TIFF predictors.
- Bounded: DeviceN at 32 inks, sampled functions at 2^24 samples and 32
outputs, 4096 patches a shading, strokepath ignores dashes finer than 1e5
pieces, Type 3 glyphs nest 8 deep (a glyph that shows itself overflowed the
stack before the limit), 64-bit index maths for 32-bit targets.
Tests: a synthetic program per generator (cairo/Inkscape, its Type 3 fonts,
matplotlib, CorelDRAW, Affinity, LibreOffice, Ghostscript eps2write,
Illustrator procsets), meshes and function shadings, masked images, fault
messages, probing operators, metafile/EPSI previews, `//name`, user paths,
hostile patterns/glyphs/shadings (run against main, 12 of the 14 generator
and feature tests fail; CorelDRAW- and LibreOffice-style programs already
read there). The import fuzz vocabulary covers the new operators. Checked
against real files made here with Inkscape 1.4 (cairo) and Illustrator 2026
(its own format and the CS-to-CC compatibility formats; all fell back or
stopped early on main and open as vectors now; its Illustrator 8 format
needs the next commit); those files aren't committed.

- The inspect_document tool (and the control channel's document.inspect)
take {depth?, childLimit?}, so MCP clients get the skeleton without
going through run_command; the tool description points at the
drill-down path.
- document.find rejects a filter of the wrong type instead of dropping
it (which widened the search); one opt_u64 helper parses limit, depth
and childLimit.
- docs/mcp.md spells out find's matching rules; control-protocol.md
and ROADMAP updated; MCP and engine tests cover the new paths.

The export tool's description, the docs' open_file and export rows and the
CLI's run/convert usage listed only some formats. The CLI usage now prints
the writable extensions next to the readable ones, both generated from the
format table (export_extensions), the export tool points to its generated
format enum, and the docs name EPS, DXF, EMF, WMF, SVGZ and templates.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
It ran document.save, which keeps the document's own file and format (or
takes the format the path's extension picks), but described itself as a
native .vectorcraft save. The description now says so, with the formats
generated from SAVE_FORMATS, and points to export for the others.

Holding the brush still keeps Twirl, Pucker and Bloat applying, scaled by the
time held: a new Tool::tick (time supplied by the host: canvas frames, or
`holdMs` on ui.pointer / pointer_gesture events) repeats the last point every
0.1 s, one more dab there. Liquify never touches graphs, meshes, type, symbols,
images, or envelopes, repeats and blends with their contents, nor guides in
selection mode; those under the brush come back in `skipped` with a `warning`
that the status bar shows (UiRequest::Status). A drag applies only the dabs
each new sample adds (the stroke's state is kept between previews), giving the
same result as the whole stroke, so journal replay still reproduces it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Double-clicking a Liquify tool opens its Tool Options (dialog liquifyOptions):
the shared Global Brush Dimensions (Width, Height, Angle, Intensity, Use
Pressure Pen), the tool's options (Detail, Simplify with its checkbox, Twirl
Rate, Complexity, Brush Affects, Horizontal/Vertical) and Show Brush Size.
The canvas captures pen pressure from pen/touch force, ui.pointer and MCP
pointer events take `pressure`, and object.liquify takes [x, y, pressure].
Fixes: LiquifyParams::to_json now sends affectAnchors/In/Out; Alt-drag sizes
the brush from its current size (Shift keeps proportions) instead of
collapsing it. Hint-bar text for the seven tools. Registers the MCP Liquify
tests file added in M8.2.

document.export {format: "psd"} writes layered bitmaps (8 bits per channel),
written from the format's public specification: RGB, CMYK (ink amounts) or
grayscale, the resolution and an embedded profile, PackBits channels, and the
merged image (the flat render). layers (default true) draws each top-level
layer alone as a pixel layer, cropped to what it paints, with its name,
opacity and blend mode; a background colour becomes a Background layer.
maxEditability turns layers and sublayers into groups and every object into a
layer named as the Layers panel names it (text by its text); clipping, masked,
knockout or appearance-carrying layers stay one layer. hiddenLayers writes
hidden layers hidden instead of leaving them out; layers: false writes a flat
image on white. At most 30000 pixels a side.
Export As offers PSD with the psdOptions dialog (the PNG Options rows, then
Color Model, Flat Image / Write Layers with Maximum Editability and Include
Hidden Layers, Embed ICC Profile). Tests read the files back with the psd
crate (MIT OR Apache-2.0, a dev-dependency).

document.export {format: "tga"} writes uncompressed true-colour Targa files
through the raster export path (resolution, background, anti-aliasing,
artboard ranges): depth 16 (5-5-5 with a one-bit alpha), 24 (flattened on
white) or 32 (8-bit alpha), rows bottom-up, with the version 2 footer.
Export As offers it with the tgaOptions dialog (Depth).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.export {format: "bmp"} writes BMP through the raster export path:
depth 1 (black and white), 4 or 8 (a palette by reduction and dither,
optionally RLE4/RLE8), 16 (5-5-5), 24 or 32 (with alpha, a version 4
header); colorModel rgb or gray; fileFormat windows or os2 (a core header);
flipRows writes top-down rows (a negative height). Impossible combinations
are refused as bad params. Export As offers it with the bmpOptions dialog,
which keeps its choices writable together; BMP moves from read-only to read
and write (tests that used .bmp as the unwritable format now use .dwg).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
document.export {format: "tiff"} writes baseline TIFF through the raster
export path (resolution, background, anti-aliasing, artboard ranges):
colorModel rgb (transparency as unassociated alpha), cmyk (ink amounts,
CMYK colours keep their inks) or gray, lzw (weezl), byteOrder little (II)
or big (MM), embedIcc, and the resolution tags. Export As offers it with
the tiffOptions dialog; TIFF moves from read-only to read and write.
The TIFF writer is shared: EPS previews now use it (and its PackBits)
instead of their own copy, so eps depends on render (layers allow it).

- WebP takes lossless and quality; there is no permissive pure-Rust lossy encoder yet, so
lossless: false writes lossless with a warning (the WebP Options dialog says so).
- document.export {format: "txt", encoding: utf8|utf16, lineEndings: lf|crlf,
selectionOnly}: the stories in stacking order (back to front), a thread once, hidden
objects and template layers left out; UTF-16 is little-endian with a byte order mark.
Export As → Text opens Text Export Options.
- File → Save for Office Documents… (document.exportForOffice {ppi, transparent, artboard,
path}): the artboard as a PNG at 72/150/300 ppi on white or transparent, through a small
dialog in the app.
document.formats' writable list and the MCP export tool's enum gain txt.
