Double-clicking the Shape Builder tool reported that the tool has no
options. The reference app opens Shape Builder Tool Options there.
The dialog sets Consider Open Filled Paths as Closed, Pick Color From
(Artwork or Color Swatches), Cursor Swatch Preview, Selection (Freeform
or Straight Line) and Highlight Fill. The defaults keep today's
behavior. With Consider Open Filled Paths as Closed off, a filled open
path cuts regions as an unfilled one does. With Color Swatches, a merge
fills the new shape with the current fill, and the Left and Right arrow
keys step the current fill through the document's color swatches.
Cursor Swatch Preview shows the current fill and the swatches before
and after it above the pointer. With Straight Line, a drag merges what
the line from its first point to its last crosses. With Highlight Fill
off, merge mode shades no regions.
The options persist like other tools' options. shapeBuilder.merge
takes openFilledAsClosed and pickColorFrom, and shapeBuilder.regions
takes openFilledAsClosed. Gap Detection, "In Merge Mode, Clicking
Stroke Splits the Path" and Highlight Stroke When Editable are not part
of this change.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
Object › Live Paint › Merge built the merged group anew and copied
only the bottom Live Paint group's name, opacity and blend mode, so
its lock, visibility, appearance, opacity mask, graphic style link and
other properties were lost. Make with a Live Paint group selected, and
a Live Paint Bucket click on a selected path beside a selected Live
Paint group, made a new group with a new id instead, and every face
took the fill of its paths again.
Merge now starts from the bottom Live Paint group, as Gap Options
does, and replaces only its faces, edges and paths and its Gap
Options. Make, and livePaint.fill with ids when the point is outside
that group's faces, add the other objects to the bottom Live Paint
group among them as Merge does.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
An edge hidden on its own (for example with Object > Hide) while its
Live Paint group stays visible could still be highlighted, selected or
stroked, and a hidden edge nearer the pointer kept a visible one from
being picked.
lp_part_at now takes the nearest visible edge (visible_edge_near), inside
and outside the faces, for the hover, the Live Paint Selection click and
the Bucket's Shift-click. The Bucket's Shift-click sends nothing where no
edge is highlighted, and livePaint.strokeEdge also skips hidden edges, so
the Bucket strokes the edge it highlights.
The reference app's View menu has Show Live Paint Gaps, which
highlights the gaps in the selected Live Paint group based on the gap
options set for that group. VectorCraft had no such item.
View > Show Live Paint Gaps (view.livePaintGaps) turns the highlight
on or off, and the item reads Hide Live Paint Gaps while it is on.
While it is on and edges show, the canvas draws the gaps of each
selected Live Paint group up to its Paint Stops At size, the gaps that
livePaint.info lists. It draws them as the Gap Options preview does,
as lines in the group's Gap Preview Color. The setting works as View >
Hide Text Threads does: one setting covers every document, it is saved
with the interface state, and Hide Edges hides the gaps. It is off by
default.

In a CMYK document, paint.setFill stores an RGB color as CMYK through
the color settings, but the other commands that take a color stored it
as RGB: text.create, text.createInPath, text.setStyle and
text.setRangeStyle colors, a shapeBuilder.merge hex fill,
paint.editGradient stops, freeform gradient points, gradient mesh
points, the Symbol Stainer's color, and swatch.new {colors},
swatch.newGroup, swatch.editGroup and swatch.edit. The Mesh tool sent
the fill as a hex value, so a CMYK fill came in as RGB.
These commands now store such a color through paint::new_color, as
paint.setFill does, and take keepModel to keep RGB (shapeBuilder.merge
inside its fill object). A color the swatch
or gradient already has keeps its model, so stops sent back with a
moved offset keep their colors (the Gradient panel's ramp and the
Gradient tool send keepModel), and a stop that names a process
swatch takes the swatch's color as it is, in paint.setFill gradients
too. Where the app copies an existing color, it keeps the color's
model: the Color panel's sliders for gradient stops and freeform
points, a swatch put on a stop or a point (the stop popover, Alt-click
in the Swatches panel, a drop on the Gradient panel's ramp), the fill
the Mesh tool gives a new point or the Symbol Stainer applies, and the
colors the Color Guide, Color Themes and Recolor Artwork save as
swatches.
swatch.new {color, mode} converted RGB into CMYK before converting it
into mode, so the New Swatch dialog in RGB mode stored #00ff00 as
R101 G176 B62 in a CMYK document. With mode, the color is now
converted once.

The public documentation says Image Trace warns about images larger
than 1500 pixels on a side but traces them, only more slowly. VectorCraft
traced them silently, and refused any trace of more than 2,000,000
anchors, which a 4000 x 3000 photo at High Fidelity Photo nearly reaches
(1.9 million on a code-drawn photo) and a noisier one passes.
- imageTrace.make and makeAndExpand return `warnings`: one for an image
over 1500 px on a side (traced, but more slowly; a lower-fidelity
preset or a smaller copy is quicker), one for an image over 64 MP
that was traced from a scaled-down copy. The app shows the first in
the status bar.
- MAX_TRACE_ANCHORS is 8,000,000 natively (2,000,000 on wasm, where a
page has at most 4 GB). Measured through imageTrace.make on
code-drawn photos: about 90 bytes an anchor kept in the document;
7.9 million anchors kept 685 MB with an 876 MB peak (4000 x 3000,
Full Tone at Colors 100, Paths 100, Noise 1, 37 s).
- The refusal keeps its translated advice: raise Noise, lower Paths or
Colors, or pick a lower-fidelity preset.
Tests: a_large_image_traces_with_a_warning (1600 x 40 and 1500 x 8
code-drawn images, make and make-and-expand),
trace_warnings_name_a_large_or_scaled_down_image, a compile-time check
of the limit's range, and a UI test that the status bar shows the note.

Object > Live Paint > Gap Options was a stub, and paint leaked through
any gap between the paths of a Live Paint group. The reference app's
Gap Options stop paint at small gaps, close them with unpainted paths
and preview them on the canvas.
livePaint.gapOptions (Gap Options) sets a group's options: detect (Gap
Detection), size (small 3 pt, medium 6 pt, large 12 pt, or a custom
size over 0 up to 72 pt), color (the Gap Preview Color, #rrggbb or a
layer color's name) and closeGaps, which adds an unpainted path across
each gap to the group's paths. A gap runs from a loose end of a path
to the nearest point of any path within the size, unless the paths
already join the two close by. With detection on, the faces are made
again as if a line closed each gap, and each face or edge keeps the
look of the old one it lies in or on. The options are stored on the
group, so they are saved, copied and undone with it, and Expand drops
them. Merge keeps the bottom group's options when its Gap Detection is
on, or else turns Gap Detection on with Small when another merged
group has it on. When Gap Detection is off in every merged group,
Merge keeps it off. livePaint.info lists the options and the gaps up
to the size wide that no path closes.
The menu item opens a Gap Options dialog. With Preview on, the options
apply live and the gaps show on the canvas in the preview color, and
OK keeps them as one undo step. vectorcraft-pathops gains find_gaps
and live_paint_with_gaps.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
i18n: the 19 complete catalogs have rows for the dialog's labels, and
bg's Gap Options menu label now names gaps instead of line spacing.
Commands that read the selection through edit::selected_roots leave
out an object whose group is also selected (edit::roots_of). Fourteen
places that read `ids` kept an object listed together with its group.
Given ids that list an object and a group that holds it, Make Repeat
failed with "no such object", New Symbol failed or stored the object
twice in the symbol, and object.transform moved it twice (20 pt for a
10 pt move).
These places now pass explicit ids through edit::outermost, which
drops an id whose ancestor is also listed, with the filter that
roots_of runs on the selection (now edit::without_inner). Nothing else
is dropped or replaced: unlike roots_of, it keeps layers and
compound-path members. A list without nesting gives the same result as
before. Commands that take both ids and the selection as listed, such
as paint.setFill without item, are unchanged.

Each documented preset has an enhanced version (`enhanced: true` in
`imageTrace.make`, an Enhanced checkbox under the panel's preset): the preset
with Auto Grouping, and with Shapes in all but High Fidelity Photo. Gradients
stay an option. Flat Logo, a preset of our own, has none. The legacy presets,
and documents traced with them, are as they were.
So that an enhanced preset is no worse than its preset on that preset's inputs:
- A hole that one colour fills is the same shape as the path that fills it, so
the two still share one outline (a shape beside a fitted hole left slivers).
- A rectangle is as large as where its sides lie on average, not their farthest
points.
- Auto Grouping keeps the paths of a group in the order they were traced in. It
put a path first and what is inside it on top: a white counter traced under
its black letter was then painted over the letter's edge, a light seam
(Default with Auto Grouping, edge dE 10.24 -> 9.88; legacy 10.05).
The harness measures every enhanced preset beside its preset.
Create: Strokes drew every line with round caps: a square-ended line 10 px wide
had its corners 2.94 px outside the stroke.
- A line's ends are square when its ink reaches as far a third of the width to
either side of its middle as along it (a round end stops short there by a
seventh of the width); told from lines 3 px wide and more, all the ends of a
line together. The stroke then has square caps (`TracedPath::square_caps`).
- The last points of a wide line's skeleton can turn towards a corner of its
end. An end that has left the line the skeleton followed a width back (by a
quarter of the width, 1 px at least) is put back on it; and an end may be
pulled back as well as pushed out to where the ink ends.
Outline on the thin-line inputs: largest distance from the art 2.94 -> 0.88 px
(clean 2.94 -> 0.41; aliased 0.88 -> 0.81), mean 0.055 -> 0.050 px, anchors
14 -> 10.
Gradients (params `gradients`, a checkbox in the panel for Grayscale and Color;
off unless asked for): an area whose colour changes evenly along one direction
is traced as one path filled with a linear gradient, not as bands of flat colour.
Gradients are found before the palette is made, so no colour is spent on their
bands: a connected run of smoothly changing pixels is a gradient when a plane
fits each colour channel with all three sloping the same way, the colours along
that way are at most six stops with ramps between them, and painting them back
gives the area's own pixels. Flat colour, soft edges between flat colours and
shading that goes two ways are left as they were.
The harness gains two linear-gradient inputs with known lines and stops, and
measures whether each is found, the angle of its line and the colours of its ramp.
Auto Grouping (params `autoGrouping`, a checkbox in the panel; off unless asked
for): each traced path that has others inside its outer contour comes out in a
group with them, the path first, nested as deep as the picture is. The path that
covers the whole image is nobody's group.
The grouped result paints the same picture: where paths can overlap (stacked
layers, Flat Logo, strokes) a path only joins a path below it, and only if that
moves it under nothing that shares any of its box.
The harness measures three presets with the option on ("grouped %"), painting
them in the grouped order.
Shapes (params `shapes`, a checkbox in the panel; off unless asked for): a filled
outline that is a circle, an ellipse, a rectangle or a regular polygon comes out
as that live shape. A shape is only made when every point of the traced outline
lies within 0.5 px (0.2% of the shape's size, if more) of it; an ellipse whose
radii differ by less than twice that is a circle of its area.
The outline before fitting: a corner's own pixel no longer pulls the two edges
that meet there, and a one-pixel step between two long edges is the corner where
they meet. Sharp corners kept: Default 69% -> 76%, the colour presets 86% -> 91%.
The harness gains plain-shape inputs and "shapes %".
Against the documented panel (https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/manage-objects/traces-mockups-symbols/image-trace-panel-options.html):
- Ignore Color: "Ignores a specific color while tracing. Use the color picker to selectively ignore a color."
The panel's Ignore White is now Ignore Color with a colour button beside it (white until another colour is
picked); `imageTrace.make` takes `ignoreColor: "#rrggbb"` beside `ignoreWhite`, and leaves out the palette
colours within about 30 levels of it. Documents saved before have no such setting and ignore white as they
did. Flat Logo mode leaves out white only.
- Auto Color ("Creates a posterized image from a photo or artwork"): Color mode with the Automatic palette.
- Outline ("Simplifies the image to black outlines"): Black and White with Create: Strokes and no fills.
- The Outline preset's name is translated as a preset's name, not as the Outline view's.
Measured (docs/image-trace-quality.md): Auto Color on flat art is 0.140 px off on average with 4.0 paths (16
Colors: 0.141, 4.2). Outline on the line inputs, the first measure of Create: Strokes: 0.310 px off on average,
1.84 at worst, 81 anchors for 5 lines (Line Art's filled outlines: 0.055, 0.96, 46).
Offset Path, Outline Stroke, the Pathfinder panel, Clean Up, Make
Blend, Rasterize and the other commands that #1429's table marks 3,
except Split Into Grid, added, removed or replaced their objects one at
a time, and so did Remove Anchor Points, Redefine Symbol and the
removal of Shaper groups whose source art is gone. Each insertion or
removal moved the later objects of the layer or group. The lookups by
id that followed walked the tree, and every fourth walk rebuilt the
lookup cache. On 25,000 rectangles a release build of vectorcraft-cli
took 29.1 s for Offset Path.
These commands now make their edits with Document::wrap,
Document::insert_beside and Document::remove_many, in one pass over the
children of each layer or group, and Outline Stroke and Expand write
each new object into the place of the object it replaces. A list that
holds an object twice, or an object and another inside it, and that was
edited without an error before, is still edited one object at a time.
The documents, selections and undo steps are the same. On the same
rectangles Offset Path now takes 1.3 s.
Docs: docs/target-app-parity.md.
Rarely set fields move into one optional boxed NodeExtras, and large NodeKind payloads (images,
live shapes, blends, envelopes) are boxed. Every object, and every undo step that copies it,
shrinks: a 50k-path move keeps ~24.5 MB per step instead of ~40 MB. Files stay byte-identical
(Node keeps its flat JSON through a borrowed Serialize and a from-wire Deserialize, no flatten),
and loading is slightly faster. Undo and redo reuse their step's size estimate instead of
walking the document again (8.3 -> 5.6 ms for a 50k-path move).

An image larger than the tracer's 64 megapixels was refused. It is now
decoded and box-filtered down to the largest size of its aspect within
64 megapixels, and the traced paths are mapped back to the image's own
size. Images over 192 megapixels are still refused from their header,
before decoding.

Every edit of an object copied its whole appearance (its fills, strokes and effects, about
540 bytes for a basic object) into the new node, though a move leaves it as it is. Over 45
whole-selection moves of 10,000 paths, undo history grew by 589 MB; now 349 MB (41 % less), and
a nudge or a drag of the selection takes 12 ms instead of 15.
- Node::appearance is a vectorcraft_doc::Shared<Appearance>: copy-on-write. A clone shares it,
and the first change through DerefMut copies it (Arc::make_mut). Reads, writes, equality (also
against a plain Appearance) and the saved form are those of the Appearance itself, so call
sites read and change it as before. Sites that build or assign a whole appearance add .into(),
and the few that need a plain copy take (*n.appearance).clone().
- Node::transform changes the appearance only when it has gradients to transform, and pattern
paints are transformed only when there are some: a move no longer copies an appearance it
doesn't change.
The workspace suite (5,301 tests) and clippy pass with the change; the doc and engine suites
pass again after the transform guard.

A fourth Image Trace mode for flat-colour logos. The existing tracer follows hard pixel
edges, so an outline can only be as good as the pixel grid; here each pixel is read as a
blend of the logo's flat colours, the blend is interpolated smoothly (cubic B-spline), and
every outline is placed where two colours are equally present, to a fraction of a pixel.
Outlines are then cleaned the way a person would:
- corners the blur rounded are put back (line fits either side of a bend, intersected);
- near-straight runs and near-circular arcs become exact lines and arcs (Snap Curves To Lines);
- the rest is fitted with as few cubic Beziers as the tolerance allows (Schneider);
- touching colours overlap by 0.06 px so no hairline gap opens between independent fits;
- shapes are painted biggest first; transparent areas fully enclosed by artwork (letters
knocked out of a badge, the counters of an "o") are painted white so the logo reads the
same on any background, or become real holes with Ignore White (each hole belongs to the
smallest outline containing it);
- an outline whose fit strays more than 1.4 px from the raw contour is fitted plainly.
Colours are found automatically (and completed from pixels no blend of the known colours
explains, so a small accent is not lost) or named with `logoColors: ["#rrggbb", ...]` (white is
always its own class; colours closer than 12 count as one; at most ten). Gradients and photos
are refused with advice to use Color (a flat-colour score of the solid areas, 0.93). A
hard-edged source with no anti-aliasing is softened by under a pixel and fitted with looser
snap tolerances. Images over 1024 px on the long side are averaged down first (further, if
they are busy enough to make the unmixing expensive) and the result is mapped back exactly.
More real outlines than we will fit are refused, not silently truncated.
Also: a "Flat Logo" preset, the mode in the Image Trace panel (Method hidden: it always
stacks), the command docs and MCP prompt, es/fr/it/ru translations for the two new messages
and the mode name, and the ROADMAP.
Never-crash: no unwrap/expect/panic, every size and float is bounded and checked, with
tests for degenerate and extreme input (NaN/infinite parameters, 0x0 and 1x1 images, sparse
outlines, an anchor budget, a 200,000-entry palette) and a 250-run randomised no-panic
property test. The B-spline interpolation follows Unser et al. and Thevenaz et al., and the
curve fitter follows Schneider (Graphics Gems); both are written from the papers.
Measured (local experiment, not in CI): a flat-colour logo's vector original rendered down
to a soft 199x100 px PNG and traced. Mean edge error vs the original at 1600 px wide:
built-in colour presets 2.5 to 3.4 px, Flat Logo 0.78 px (0.48 px from a crisp source);
region overlap 0.88-0.91 vs 0.966. About 0.1 s for a 200 px logo.
Tests: 60 new in the trace crate (unmix, field, contours, geometry, Beziers, corners,
outline fitting, palette, end-to-end on synthetic shapes made in code) and 3 in the engine.
cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, test, assets, brands, layers, wasm): 4,290 tests.

Advanced › Create: Fills and/or Strokes, with Stroke (the widest line, px).
With Strokes, each colour's 8-connected parts no wider than the stroke width
(chamfer distance transform) trace as open centre lines instead of filled
outlines: the line is thinned to one pixel (Zhang-Suen with each removal
re-checked, so two-pixel lines survive; staircase corners dropped), its
skeleton becomes runs between ends and junctions (junction pixels merged,
spurs pruned, runs through two-way junctions joined, rings closed), and each
run is simplified and fitted with curves. The stroke width is the line's mean
width (pixels over length). Traced lines get round caps and joins in the
document. Without Fills, wider areas become 1 px stroked outlines.
`imageTrace.make` takes fills, strokes and strokeWidth, and refuses neither
fills nor strokes and a non-positive width.

Color mode's colours now come from a Palette (`palette` in imageTrace.make's
params), shown in the Image Trace panel under Mode:
- Limited: the `colors` best colours (what Color did before; the default).
- Full Tone: median cut until no colour box spans more than 96 (Less) … 8
(More) levels per channel, up to 256 colours, set by `colorDetail` 0-100
(the panel's Colors slider for this palette).
- Automatic: flat art (90% of the pixels in a few tight colours) traces with
exactly its colours, anything else as Full Tone.
- Document Library: the most used (at most `colors`) colours of the
document's swatches or of a swatch library (`library`: "document" or a
library id or name, chosen in the panel's Library list), used as they are;
traced shapes fill with the swatch's own colour, its colour model kept.
The library's colours are looked up at every trace, not saved.

- The Image Trace panel's Advanced options sit under a full-width collapsible
header (widgets::section_toggle, also used by New Document's Advanced
Options); whether it is open is kept with the UI preferences.
- View: Tracing Result, Tracing Result with Outlines, Outlines, Outlines with
Source Image and Source Image, in the panel, the Control bar and the
Properties panel. The view is saved in the Image Trace object's settings
(`trace.view`), kept when it is traced again, set with the new
`imageTrace.setView` command (or `view` on imageTrace.make) and drawn by the
canvas only (RenderOptions::trace_views): exports, printing and Expand keep
the tracing result.

Merging regions united the faces' outlines with a boolean union. Each
face had been refit on its own, so two faces' shared edge could come out
a hair apart: the union then kept the edge between them, or a spur of
it, and a stroked merged shape (unfilled art) showed a stray line inside.
Subtracting the merged shape from the others left slivers along it too.
pathops::FaceMerger merges faces from the planar arrangement itself,
made once per merge: their contours share their edges exactly, so the
edges between merged faces vanish. The Shape Builder builds the merged
shape that way, and what is left of each shape from its faces not merged
(rather than subtracting the merged shape from it). Selections with open
paths keep the old union.

Tracing a 2048 x 2048 photo with High Fidelity Photo made 733,000 paths
and 7.8 million anchors. The selected result's outlines and anchor
squares then made an egui mesh of 1.8 GB, over the GPU's largest buffer:
wgpu panicked while painting and the app quit (or ran out of memory
first, at 6.4 GB).
- Canvas: a selection with more than 100,000 anchors shows its bounds
instead of every outline and anchor, and the hover highlight skips
such an object. The Contextual Task Bar and that outline read the
selection's bounds from a per-revision cache (VectorcraftApp::
selection_bounds): a selected trace drew a frame in 20 ms, not 170.
- Image Trace: the colour layers are traced in parallel (26 s to 1.9 s
for that photo; the web traces them in turn). trace_within stops once
the paths pass an anchor budget; imageTrace.make allows two million
and otherwise reports the trace as too complex, with what to change.
Images over 64 megapixels are refused from their header, before they
are decoded.
- The trace crate's messages are translated (es, it) and scanned.

Alt already deleted regions and pieces of open lines, but erase mode had
no edges of closed shapes, no distinct pointer, highlighted regions in the
merge-mode grey, only noticed Alt on a mouse move, and an erase drag could
flip mode at release. Like the reference app's erase mode:
- pathops::shape_builder(shapes, edges) returns a BuilderArrangement; with
`edges` it also cuts the outlines of closed (and filled open) paths
wherever other paths meet them. pathops::cut_out removes such a piece
from a path: a closed subpath opens there, an open one splits or
shortens, a piece all the way round takes its subpath, and a filled open
path's invisible closing edge never comes back as a visible segment.
Specks where paths only touch cut nothing; a zero-length input is no
longer the source of edges running through it. encloses_area is shared
with the tool's closing of filled open paths.
- BuilderMap (with_edges) hit-tests edges like line pieces (nearest wins);
an erase gesture that crosses an edge into a region deletes the region,
not the edge (erased_edges).
- shapeBuilder.merge {erase}: deletes the edges touched within tolerance
(from every shape along them), after the regions; returns `edges`.
shapeBuilder.regions lists `edges` (bounds, source). One undo step.
- Shape Builder tool: Alt held switches to erase mode and back on release:
red mesh/edge highlights of what will be deleted, a minus pointer
(Cursor::ShapeBuilder / ShapeBuilderErase, a plus in merge mode); a drag
keeps the mode it started in. The canvas re-hovers the tool when a
modifier changes, so the highlight follows Alt without a mouse move.

The Shape Builder only used the filled areas of the selected paths, so a
stroke-only line or open path across a shape did nothing. Like the
reference app's Shape Builder, open paths now act as cutting edges:
- pathops::shape_builder: with an open path in the selection, the
regions are the Live Paint planar map's faces (every path an edge), so a
line across a shape splits it and lines can enclose a region of their
own; it also returns each open path cut where other paths meet it. Closed
shapes alone, more than SHAPE_BUILDER_MAX_SEGMENTS segments, or a map
that can't be built fall back to the filled-area arrangement.
- Filled open paths count as closed (an invisible closing edge) where that
encloses an area; unfilled open paths and straight lines stay edges.
- shapeBuilder.merge: merging or deleting regions on both sides of a line
piece removes that piece (the line is split, its other pieces kept); an
area only lines enclose takes the current fill and the front-most
object's look. Alt (erase) within `tolerance` of a line piece deletes it.
Returns `lines` (pieces deleted).
- shapeBuilder.regions also lists the line pieces.
- The tool shares BuilderMap/Touched with the command, highlights the line
piece under the pointer while Alt is held and passes its tolerance.

The Live Paint Bucket now fills areas enclosed by any paths. Crossing
lines enclose faces it can fill, a line across a shape splits that shape's
face in two, and an area enclosed by paths becomes a face even when nothing
fills it (it starts unfilled). Edges are the paths cut wherever another path
meets them, keeping their stroke, so Shift-click paints each piece. Closed
shapes give the same faces as before.
Root cause: Live Paint built its faces from the Pathfinder regions, which
divide the filled areas of closed shapes. An open path counted only as the
area it would fill if closed, which for a straight line is nothing, so lines
divided nothing and the bucket found no face to fill. A new planar map in
vectorcraft-pathops (live_paint) sweeps every path as an edge: an open path
goes in traced there and back, with crossing counts that never cancel; faces
are walked on the resulting graph (holes included), and their fills and the
edges' sources are found geometrically. The sweep runs in an exactly sheared
frame, because it mishandles a horizontal line traced there and back.
Make, Merge, the bucket and Live Paint Selection all use it;
interior_point moves to vectorcraft-pathops with it.

Shipped code no longer unwraps, expects or panics: every one of the 124
unwrap()/expect()/panic!/unreachable! sites outside tests now handles the
failure (Result/Option, ?, let-else, defaults) and reports errors to the user.
- Lints: workspace clippy denies unwrap_used, expect_used, panic, todo,
unimplemented and unreachable; clippy.toml allows them in tests, and
integration tests, examples and testkit opt out explicitly.
- Safety net (vectorcraft_engine::guard): a panic in a top-level command rolls
the document back and returns EngineError::Internal; a panicking tool is
reset; the MCP server answers with an internal error and keeps serving; the
UI frame and each control request are guarded.
- APIs that hid failures now return them: Rendered::to_png/to_jpeg/to_webp
return Result (JPEG/WebP errors used to write empty files),
FontDb::face returns Option, Region::top returns Option.
- Fuzzing: engine/tests/import_fuzz.rs feeds garbage, hostile and mutated SVG
and PDF through import → render → export (30k cases locally, no panics).
- Docs: AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md rule, docs/development.md "Robustness" section,
README pointer and a PR template checklist.

A group's or layer's own fills and strokes paint every member's geometry, below or above the
members as the new contents slot (Appearance.contents_index) says; its geometry effects reshape
the members as one piece and its raster effects apply to the composite (one combined shadow),
respecting knockout groups. Type's own fills and strokes paint under or over its characters.
Render, SVG/PDF (via bake) and Expand Appearance evaluate them alike.
Commands: appearance.* / effect.* take target: "object"|"contents" and layer ids;
appearance.moveItem moves the Contents slot (from: "contents") or an item across it
(contents); appearance.targetContents selects a group's members. Graphic styles applied to a
group now style the group itself. The Appearance panel shows Contents/Characters rows that
drag, and double-click to target the members or edit the characters' paint.
