The reference app adds a new fill with Ctrl+/ on Windows and Command+/
on macOS, and it adds a new stroke with Ctrl+Alt+/ on Windows and
Option+Command+/ on macOS. VectorCraft had Add New Fill and Add New
Stroke on the Appearance panel, with no default key for either.
appearance.addFill now has the default Cmd+/ and appearance.addStroke
has Cmd+Alt+/, which are Ctrl+/ and Ctrl+Alt+/ on Windows and Linux.
Like the panel's buttons and menu items, each key runs its command with
no params and adds the item to every selected object. Keyboard Shortcuts
lists both under Window › Appearance with their keys, and press_key
runs them for agents.

Commands that read the selection through edit::selected_roots leave
out an object whose group is also selected (edit::roots_of). Fourteen
places that read `ids` kept an object listed together with its group.
Given ids that list an object and a group that holds it, Make Repeat
failed with "no such object", New Symbol failed or stored the object
twice in the symbol, and object.transform moved it twice (20 pt for a
10 pt move).
These places now pass explicit ids through edit::outermost, which
drops an id whose ancestor is also listed, with the filter that
roots_of runs on the selection (now edit::without_inner). Nothing else
is dropped or replaced: unlike roots_of, it keeps layers and
compound-path members. A list without nesting gives the same result as
before. Commands that take both ids and the selection as listed, such
as paint.setFill without item, are unchanged.
Docs: docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md.
These commands edited the document even when nothing changed, so the
call recorded an undo step, emptied Redo and marked the document
modified:
- Fill, Stroke, None, Apply Last Color and Apply Last Gradient with the
paint the objects have already, also on characters selected with the
Type tool.
- stroke.set and stroke.setAdvanced with the options the strokes have
already.
- paint.editGradient, paint.setGradientGeom and the freeform point
commands when the gradient comes out as it was.
- Invert and Complement on the Appearance panel's selected row when no
color changes.
- Swap Fill and Stroke and Default Fill and Stroke when every object
comes out as it was.
- appearance.setItem with the values the item has or an index no
object has, and transparency.set with an item and the values that
item has; appearance.removeItem with indices past every stack;
appearance.moveItem, Reduce to Basic Appearance, Clear Appearance,
the Eyedropper (appearance.copyFrom) and appearance.transfer when
every object comes out as it was.
These commands now return without editing the document. The replies
have the same form as before. On a graph's series or labels, a fill or
stroke that the art has already still records one undo step when the
graph does not keep that paint for them (for example after the
Eyedropper painted the art), and the graph then keeps it.
The Eyedropper test whose second copy changed nothing gives its target
a green fill first, which the copy turns red again.
One line in the evidence list of docs/target-app-parity.md names these
commands, apart from Invert and Complement.
Every edit of an object copied its whole appearance (its fills, strokes and effects, about
540 bytes for a basic object) into the new node, though a move leaves it as it is. Over 45
whole-selection moves of 10,000 paths, undo history grew by 589 MB; now 349 MB (41 % less), and
a nudge or a drag of the selection takes 12 ms instead of 15.
- Node::appearance is a vectorcraft_doc::Shared<Appearance>: copy-on-write. A clone shares it,
and the first change through DerefMut copies it (Arc::make_mut). Reads, writes, equality (also
against a plain Appearance) and the saved form are those of the Appearance itself, so call
sites read and change it as before. Sites that build or assign a whole appearance add .into(),
and the few that need a plain copy take (*n.appearance).clone().
- Node::transform changes the appearance only when it has gradients to transform, and pattern
paints are transformed only when there are some: a move no longer copies an appearance it
doesn't change.
The workspace suite (5,301 tests) and clippy pass with the change; the doc and engine suites
pass again after the transform guard.

Group Selection's fill and stroke on a graph series are kept on the graph,
separately per series, and reapplied when its data, type or size changes,
and through save, open and undo.
Each paragraph has its own alignment, indents, spacing, hyphenation, tab
stops and paragraph style (TextObject.paras; para stays paragraph 0's, so
old files and readers work). Layout, editing (split/merge), threads, the
Paragraph/Tabs/Paragraph Styles panels, ranged text.setStyle/setFormat/
tabs/paraStyle.apply, SVG export/import and the fuzzers follow.
Clicking a Layers panel target circle runs `layer.target {id}`: a layer gets its art
selected and becomes the target (`Selection.target`) of the appearance, effect,
transparency and opacity-mask commands, which then edit the layer itself; the
Appearance panel lists it. Dragging a circle onto another runs
`appearance.transfer {source, target, copy?}` (Alt copies), dropping it on the trash
clears it. Filled dots also mark groups and layers with fills of their own, masked
objects get a dashed underline, and while an opacity mask is edited the panel lists
only an `<Opacity Mask>` entry and the tab says so.

Double-clicking the Eyedropper opens Eyedropper Options (dialog
eyedropperOptions): raster sample size (point, 3x3, 5x5) and Picks Up /
Applies trees (transparency; focal fill colour, transparency, overprint;
focal stroke colour, transparency, overprint, weight, cap, join, miter,
dash; character and paragraph attributes). The options live in the
preferences (Prefs::eyedropper, eyedropper.setOptions, prefs key
eyedropper) and replace the earlier appearance/transparency switches.
appearance.copyFrom takes pickUp/apply overrides, reverse (Alt-click:
the selection's attributes onto the clicked object) and append
(Shift+Alt-click: add the source's fills and strokes). Type copies font,
size and paragraph attributes to type. Clicking an image samples its
pixels; sampled colours keep their colour model.

With type selected, stroke.set (without an item) gives every run the
weight, cap, join, miter limit and dashes instead of adding an object
stroke; while the Type tool edits text, the Stroke panel styles the
selected characters through text.setRangeStyle `strokeOptions`, and the
panel reads the first run (or the selection's style).
CharStyle gains stroke_cap, stroke_join, stroke_miter_limit and
stroke_dash (defaulted, skipped when default). Character strokes and
object strokes on type now draw through the shared stroke geometry on
the canvas, in PDF and in SVG (live text writes cap/join/miter/dash and
tspans reset what the first run sets; object strokes are drawn on the
glyph outlines), so every stroke option, opacity and blend applies.
Outlines, the Eyedropper and graphic styles keep the options.

A group's or layer's own fills and strokes paint every member's geometry, below or above the
members as the new contents slot (Appearance.contents_index) says; its geometry effects reshape
the members as one piece and its raster effects apply to the composite (one combined shadow),
respecting knockout groups. Type's own fills and strokes paint under or over its characters.
Render, SVG/PDF (via bake) and Expand Appearance evaluate them alike.
Commands: appearance.* / effect.* take target: "object"|"contents" and layer ids;
appearance.moveItem moves the Contents slot (from: "contents") or an item across it
(contents); appearance.targetContents selects a group's members. Graphic styles applied to a
group now style the group itself. The Appearance panel shows Contents/Characters rows that
drag, and double-click to target the members or edit the characters' paint.

Gradient tool handles (a drawn vector's start and end, the end handle and the moved start) snap to anchors, edges
and smart guides, with the guide overlays; Shift constrains to 45° steps from the Constrain Angle preference
(`ToolContext::constrain_angle`, `constrain_angle_from` in geom). Double-clicking a toolbar button runs the new UI
command `tool.options {tool}`: the Gradient tool opens the Gradient panel, the Eyedropper opens Eyedropper Options
(`eyedropper.setOptions {appearance?, transparency?}`, which `appearance.copyFrom` honours and its params override).

The eyedropper (`appearance.copyFrom`), `graphicStyle.new` and `graphicStyle.apply` move placed gradients so they
sit at the same place relative to each target's bounds (type: its layout box in text space) instead of where the
source had them; the paint defaults take the gradient unplaced, so new art fits it. Model: `GradientGeom::rebase`
/ `GradientPaint::rebase` (color), `Appearance::rebase_gradients` (strokes relative to their inflated boxes) and
`GraphicStyle::unit_box`: new styles store placed gradients in unit-box space; styles from older files keep
document coordinates and apply as before.

Engine: effect.move {from, to, fromItem?, toItem?, copy?}; appearance.showAllHidden;
appearance.duplicateItem takes to? and indices?; appearance.removeItem takes indices?;
Appearance::has_hidden/show_all. UI: effect.dialog takes index? (edit in place via
effect.setParams) and opens the effectExists question for an effect already in the list.

A group's own stack now stays empty after Clear (and keeps only the rows it had after Reduce to
Basic), so the proxies keep showing the defaults for it. The Layers target-dot helper no longer
takes over the thumbnail function's doc comment.

- A fill row no longer turns stroke edits (stroke.set, setAdvanced, paint.setStroke, gradients) into
a new stroke on a selected group's own stack: an active row only stands for edits of its kind.
- Removing, duplicating or moving items of other objects (`ids`) no longer re-points the active row.
- transparency.set with an item touches the item only for opacity/blend (isolate or knockout alone
is one undo step) and rejects unknown blend modes.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An appearance is basic with at most one fill and one stroke, none hidden or
with its own opacity, blend mode or effects, and no object effects; Reduce
to Basic keeps the topmost visible fill and stroke. The Layers panel fills
an object's target circle for any non-default transparency (blend mode,
isolation, knockout or an opacity mask: Node::has_default_transparency).
A multi-selection whose objects differ shows "Mixed Appearances" with no
rows. The Appearance panel's object row and the Control bar name the
selection from one source, and type objects are "Type". Expand Appearance
is only in the Object menu. Clear Appearance also resets the object's
opacity and blend mode. Tests cover addFill/addStroke, setItem/removeItem,
clear, reduceToBasic and graphicStyle.apply.

effect.apply, effect.remove, effect.setParams and the new effect.duplicate
take item (omitted: the Appearance panel's active item, else the object;
null: the object's own effects), so the fx button, the Effect menu, Apply
Last Effect and the effect dialogs (effect.dialog {item}) put the effect on
the selected fill or stroke. effect.list reports each object's item effects
and the active item. appearance.addEffect is an alias of effect.apply.
In the Appearance panel, item effect rows sit under their fill or stroke
with working eyes and inline editors, and can be selected for Duplicate
and Delete; a selected effect row is remembered per object.

While a mask is edited, the Transparency panel and its commands act on the
masked object (Release leaves editing first). Mask commands and
transparency.set take ids and work without a selection; Make Opacity Mask
with one object adds an empty mask and enters editing. Opacity is 0..100 in
every command. transparency.info reports the panel's values with null for
mixed ones, shown blank. Saves and exports never include the editing layer
(Document::without_edit_modes; mask_edit is not serialized).

Clicking a fill or stroke row runs appearance.setActiveItem; the toolbar,
Control bar and Properties proxies and the Color, Swatches, Gradient,
Stroke and Transparency panels show and edit that item, and the gradient
tool's annotator follows it. paint.setFill/setStroke, stroke.set/
setAdvanced, paint.editGradient/setGradientGeom and transparency.set take
item (omitted: the active item, null: the top one). Item edits and the
appearance.* commands address the selected objects' own stacks, so a
group's own fills no longer leak into its contents. Any selection change
clears the active item.

No behaviour change: every command keeps its id, label, menu, shortcut and
params doc.
- Engine: swatch.* -> cmd/swatch.rs, graphicStyle.* -> cmd/style.rs,
appearance.* (incl. copyFrom) -> cmd/appearance.rs, stroke.set/setAdvanced
-> cmd/stroke.rs, paint.editGradient/setGradientGeom -> cmd/gradient.rs.
Shared helpers in cmd/mod.rs: leaf_targets/paint_targets (replacing three
copies) and unique_name (swatch and graphic style naming).
- UI: dialogs.rs -> dialogs/ with one file per dialog and a DialogSpec
registry (one DialogKind row per dialog); shared field widgets in
dialogs/form.rs. Headless frame tests draw and confirm every dialog.
