With nothing selected, Cmd+/ and Cmd+Alt+/ ran the commands, which put
"select objects or give ids" in the status bar, and the command palette
listed both as available. Without ids and without an Appearance panel
subject (a targeted layer, group or object, or a selected one), the two
commands are now off in menus and the palette, as the panel's buttons
are, and their keys run nothing. Called with ids, they still add to those
objects.
* feat: startup update prompt modal and direct self-updating
The update flow (check at start or on request, the startup prompt, the self-update worker) is craft-update's Updater; the app only supplies the suite, its close path and its status window. The check at start is opt-in for the desktop app, and the Windows update helper runs before argument parsing.
Ref: storytold/craft-libs#319
* refactor(updates): hold the install back while documents are unsaved
* fix(updates): drop the manual window's custom id; pin craft-update to craft-libs main (db19c37)
* fix(updates): address review feedback
Wake the UI when a manual check is queued from a menu callback; the update prompt owns the keyboard while it is open (LightCraft); Download opens through the desktop URL hook (FilmCraft); the Help menu dispatches through menus::invoke (FigCraft); print jobs and comment drafts hold an install back (WordCraft); Check for Updates is a registered command (GridCraft); an install holds back while documents are unsaved.
* fix(updates): localize the update status messages
* build: resolve the craft-update pin after rebasing
* Build: craft-libs at 2869b8cc
Pin craft-pdf, craft-print, craft-docpath, craft-ui, craft-keymap,
craft-window and the patched hayro/krilla backends to craft-libs
2869b8cc1077530bd07a7e192fb2b0e1304a1354, with the pdf-deps gate,
NOTICE, ASSETS.md and docs/pdf-backend.md at the same revision.
PDF: no modification date beyond the creation date, DeviceN images
are not JPEG-encoded, and clipping text draws nothing (its outlines
arrive as a clip path).
* Docking: compile against craft-ui at 2869b8cc
Floating windows are trees of groups: window_panels and window_active
read one as a flat group, and windows rebuilt from the legacy groups
keep their ids. Unknown dock actions are rejected, the new ones are
checked like the old, and every panel a close action removes keeps its
return location.
* Docking: panels and canvas on craft-ui's docking area
* Docking: tests for the dock area, flyouts, floating panels and the Tools panel
* Docking: catalogs without the old dock's strings
* Build: craft-libs at 8a503cfe
* Docking: floating panels in OS windows of their own on the desktop
* Docking: modal dialogs block panel windows; their keys and dropped files reach the main window
* Docking: art dragged onto a panel in its own window drops there
* Docking: module doc names the OS windows
* Build: craft-libs at a042cf26
* Docking: onto, above, below, collapsed, icon and column places on Float and Dock Panel; ui.docking
* Docking: command descriptions of Float, Dock, Move and Collapse Panel for the craft-ui layout
* Docking: control protocol describes the craft-ui layout, its commands and ui.docking
* Docking: rustfmt
* Docking: layouts saved before the canvas joined convert on load
Saved ui.json files and workspaces from before the shared layout held the
canvas (a dock-only tree plus floating_panels, docking_icons,
docking_collapsed, dock_collapsed and dock_width) convert into one layout:
the dock tree's groups in the main column, the icon column with the panels
dropped on it, floating groups and sets, sets docked as columns, collapsed
groups, the dock width and the places of closed panels. The legacy fields
are read, never written. A ui.json read only in part is copied to
ui.unreadable.json before anything saves over it.
* Docking: catalogs without the old collapse message
* Docking: converted floating sets start at most 720 points tall
* Docking: closed icon panels convert into the icon column; old floating rects, set heights and a copy of the file before conversion
* Build: craft-libs at 27e60765
* Docking: dock column places and icon count from the icon column; a docked column moves to a later place
* Build: craft-libs at d24e4bcc
* Build: craft-libs at 5bbe9f62
* Docs: floating panels in OS windows of their own close the other-monitor gap
* Docking: keys forwarded from a floating panel's OS window run shortcuts while the main window is unfocused
The old pen glyph was a crude pentagon with a floating dot and a stray
stem. Redraw it as the precision instrument it is: the pen-tool icon's
nib — sharp point on the hotspot, shoulders flaring to their widest
two-thirds back, a narrower flat heel, a slit widening into the round
breather hole — swung round onto the selection arrow's midline
(arrow_axis), so holding Cmd/Ctrl to swap between the Pen and the
selection tools no longer rotates the cursor under the pointer.
Badges keep their meanings (*, +, -, o, /, j, ^, ~) and multi-stroke
ones now draw all halos under all ink via strokes(), so neighbouring
strokes no longer cut each other into blobs.
craft-keymap reserves Cmd+Escape (Ctrl+Esc, the Start menu) on Windows,
so since #3119 binding Show Grid to it there is refused and Cmd+Escape
goes to the tool. a_command_on_cmd_escape_runs_without_the_tools_escape
asserted the bound behavior on every platform and failed on Windows.
On Windows it now checks that Cmd+Escape stays unbound and ends the
Pen tool's path; elsewhere it checks the bound behavior as before.
ctrl_alt_chords_without_typed_text_still_run sent Ctrl+L and Ctrl+Alt+L
as egui reports them off the Mac (ctrl and command held). Since #3119
the keymap reads a Mac's Ctrl as a key of its own, so on macOS the test
pressed Cmd+Ctrl+L, which has no binding, and failed with
("Hi", 1) != ("Hi", 2).
The test now holds the command key egui reports on the platform the
keymap follows: Cmd on a Mac, Ctrl elsewhere. Off the Mac it sends the
same events as before.
With Shift or Alt held (Alt only while Alt key toggles to Smooth Tool
is off), a Pencil press on an end of a selected open path draws a
straight line that continues the path, but before the press the cursor
was the plain straight-line cursor. Draw straight lines with the Pencil
tool says a path-continuation icon appears on the Pencil over that end:
https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/draw-shapes/draw-straight-lines-with-the-pencil-tool.html
Over such an end the cursor is now PencilContinue, the straight-line
cursor's line leaving a small filled square.
The check is the one the press makes (Edit Selected Paths, the same
end lookup). Away from the ends, with Edit Selected Paths at 0 pixels,
with nothing selected and while the line is drawn, the cursor is as
before.
Docs: docs/target-app-parity.md and docs/ui-parity.md, where the
duplicate Pencil lines and rows left by earlier merges are cut to one.
* Shortcuts: the keymap, overrides and dispatch come from craft-keymap
The editor's catalogue (commands, UI commands, panels, tools; one tool
group per tool; show/hide commands marked as toggles) builds a
craft-keymap Keymap. UiState::shortcut_overrides is a craft_keymap
Overrides stored through keymap::stored, which writes the same map of
entry key -> one string as before, with panel: keys and VectorCraft's
spellings, so earlier versions read the file; a value that is not text
drops that entry instead of every preference.
Key presses run through craft_keymap's Dispatcher with accept filters:
keys that type text go to the one-key text path, and while the Type
tool edits only command-key chords run. Held keys repeat. Conflicts
and assignment use the crate's conflicts and set_bindings. Extra Shift
no longer falls back to the chord without it.
* Shortcuts: .kys import matches and applies through craft-keymap
The review proposes targets with craft_keymap's namematch, and Apply
hands the ready rows to craft_keymap::plan as one set, each row's
target passed as the remembered answer for its entry. The later row
takes a chord, and commands outside the set lose the chords the set
gives. Rows with one name in one block keep their own targets.
The engine's own namematch module is removed.
* Shortcuts: Cmd+, beside other hits, web Mac platform, cached dialog view
- Pin craft-keymap at 362eb59f.
- Cmd+, opens Settings on a Mac after the frame's other shortcuts run, with the
Mac read from egui's OS; drop settings_chord, which dispatch no longer used.
- The web build follows the browser's OS, so Ctrl stays Ctrl on a Mac.
- The Keyboard Shortcuts dialog keeps its keymap, row texts and conflict count
between frames while the working set is unchanged.
- Every default shortcut text becomes its entry's binding (test).
- craft-keymap counts as a UI crate for the layer check.
- Translate "too many changed shortcuts"; the parse error reuses the existing
"can't parse shortcut `{c}`" message.
* Shortcuts: the chords the operating system takes can't be assigned
The keymap reserves craft_keymap::reserved::system for its platform:
window switching and closing, and the virtual consoles off the Mac.
The Keyboard Shortcuts dialog and shortcuts.set refuse them with
"<chord> is reserved by the system", and a saved override on one keeps
the entry's default. No default shortcut uses a reserved chord.
* Shortcuts: craft-keymap at craft-libs 2eca9b3a
craft-keymap comes from storytold/craft-libs (craft-libs #164 and #186), at the rev craft-pdf
already uses. The web build keeps the browser's full platform, so Windows browsers get Windows'
reserved chords, and each platform caches its own default keymap.
A misspelled parameter key got a did-you-mean suggestion, but a
misspelled command id only got "unknown command `select.al`", through
the CLI, MCP and the control channel alike. Session::execute now names
the nearest command id, using the same matching as parameter keys
(ignoring case), and action.batch does the same for an unknown step. An
id with no near match keeps the plain error.
The matching skips candidates whose length differs by more than the
allowed number of edits, so a very long unknown command id or parameter
key is answered at once instead of being measured against every command
id or accepted key.
The new message has a row in every catalog, and docs/mcp.md's
Parameter keys section shows it.
Holding Alt over a selection the Shape Builder had already mapped built
the planar map a second time, to add the outline edges that erasing
hits. A merge, and a Live Paint Bucket fill of a plain selection, also
dropped the map, so a gesture that left the document unchanged was
followed by another full build.
The Shape Builder now builds its map with the outline edges the first
time, and both tools keep the map until the document, its revision or
the selection changes.
When the inputs have more than 128 segments, a hover with the Shape
Builder or the Live Paint Bucket now builds the map on another thread
and highlights no region until it arrives, instead of holding up the
frame; the canvas checks for it each frame. A press waits for the map,
and the headless MCP host waits for it after a move. The web build has
no threads and builds the map at once. The Live Paint Selection tool's
hover no longer builds a map of the selection, which it did not use.
With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, a document with no visible art gets only the artboard files. The useArtboards and range descriptions, the document.export and document.exportEps params text, the control protocol and the parity line now say so.
A document opened or created between edit.undoGroup.begin and
edit.undoGroup.end opens an undo group of its own with the begun
group's name, so an atomic command_batch that starts with file.new or
document.open is one undo step in the new document. The group opens
after the command that opens the document: when that command also
edits it (a command.batch), those edits stay the command's own undo
step, and a canceled group keeps them, so the journal still replays.
Both commands also run with no document open, and a command.batch that
fails rolls back a begun group. Switching to a document that was
already open does not open a group in it.
Flat Logo traces a copy of the image at most 1024 pixels on a side,
averaged down by a whole factor, so a 1025-pixel image is traced at
513 pixels. The trace's warnings did not say so, because they compared
the image only with the decoded raster. For an image over 1500 pixels
they said instead that it is traced more slowly, which Flat Logo does
not do.
The trace result now carries Flat Logo's working size when it averaged
the image down. imageTrace.make and imageTrace.makeAndExpand then name
both sizes in their warnings, and the status bar shows that note, in
place of the slower-trace and megapixel notes. Other modes keep their
warnings. The message has a row in each catalog that translates the
other Image Trace warnings.
Live Paint builds its faces and edges from path outlines alone. Make,
Merge and the Live Paint Bucket put every selected object among the
group's hidden sources, so type, an image, a symbol, a blend or a group
holding one of them vanished from the canvas. They now refuse such a
selection before changing anything ("Live Paint takes paths and compound
paths: convert type, images and other objects to paths first"), as type
and raster images can't go into a Live Paint group directly
(https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/paint-and-fill/learn-painting-basics/create-live-paint-groups.html).
One predicate, vectorcraft_tools::builder::live_paint_takes (Live Paint
groups, paths, compound paths and groups of them), decides it for Make,
Merge and the Properties panel's Merge Live Paint, which no longer shows
for a selection Merge refuses. The message has an @msg row in every
catalog.
Tests: tests_build::live_paint_refuses_type_and_images_and_changes_nothing
(Merge, Make and the Bucket with type, an image or a group holding type:
refused, document, selection and undo history unchanged; a group of
paths and a path still merge) and
panels::properties::tests::merge_live_paint_is_a_quick_action_for_a_live_paint_group_and_more
(hidden with type selected). Both fail without the change.

The Properties panel has the additional contextual controls the public
Properties panel overview lists
(https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/get-started/learn-the-basics/properties-panel-overview.html),
each running the existing command:
- Quick Actions: Blend Options for one selected blend while the Blend
tool is in use (the Blend Options dialog; OK is one undo step), and
Merge Live Paint when a Live Paint group is selected with more objects
(livePaint.merge).
- Appearance: the stroke's Variable Width Profile list (the Control
bar's) with the Width tool or when the stroke has a variable width
(stroke.set {profile}); beside fx, with one effect on the one selected
object (its own, or a fill's or stroke's), its name and a Delete icon
that removes it (effect.remove); with several, the icon opens the
Appearance panel, as the overview describes.
- With Direct Selection and corners of one path selected, Corner and
Corner Radius set those corners' kind and radius
(object.setLiveShape); a live rectangle's and polygon's own rows
already do, so they get no second row.
The overview's Variable Font icon was already in Character. Every label
is already in every catalog.
Tests in panels::properties::tests:

merge_live_paint_is_a_quick_action_for_a_live_paint_group_and_more,

selection and tool, hidden otherwise, the right command in one undo
step). Documented in docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md and
docs/gaps.md.

The Image Trace panel had no way to compare a trace with its source
image except changing View and changing it back.
The panel now has an eye button to the right of View, enabled with an
Image Trace object selected. While it is held down, the canvas draws the
selected Image Trace objects with their source image, whatever their
View, and draws their View again on release. The document, its View and
the undo history are unchanged. The renderer takes the objects in
RenderOptions::trace_source, which is also part of the canvas frame key
and the raster-effect cache key.
With Shift held before a press, the Pencil now shows a new cursor,
PencilStraight: its crosshair with a short straight line where the
closing cursor has its ring. The cursor follows the rule the press uses
to start a straight line, so it shows exactly when the press draws one.
With Alt key toggles to Smooth Tool on and Alt held too, the Smooth
cursor shows as before. Once the press is down, and with the
Paintbrush, Shift leaves the tool's own cursor. Use Precise Cursors
turns the new cursor into the plain crosshair.
Draw straight lines with the Pencil tool describes a straight-line icon
on the Pencil while Shift or Alt is held:
https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/draw-shapes/draw-straight-lines-with-the-pencil-tool.html
Deselecting made the panel jump to the swatch of the paint new art gets
(White). It now keeps the deselected art's swatch until the paints for new
art change (a swatch or colour picked with nothing selected) or another
document shows; selecting other art highlights its swatch.

With Use Artboards and two or more artboards, EPS export now writes a
central file under the path's own name before the file of each artboard.
The central file contains the whole document, and its bounding box is
the visible art, as in an export without Use Artboards. An export of a
single chosen artboard still writes one file at the path's name, and
Export for Screens still writes one EPS per artboard. When no art shows,
only the artboard files are written.
Docs: the useArtboards params text, the MCP export tool's range text,
docs/mcp.md, docs/control-protocol.md and docs/target-app-parity.md.
document.find took only name, kind and text, so removing hairline slivers or
every object in one region needed the whole inspect tree and a filter
written outside the app. It now also takes within and intersects
([x, y, width, height] in document points), min and max width, height,
thickness (the smaller side) and area of the geometric bounds, and min and
max anchor count (a compound path counts its members together). Each given
filter must match, and limits are inclusive.
select: true also selects the matches, leaving out hidden and locked
objects, matches inside another match, and compound path members unless
the compound path is isolated; the reply adds selected. Select > Reselect
repeats the find, and an action being recorded records a find that
selects. The count that select.color, the Select > Same commands and the
Select > Object commands report is now the number of objects selected,
after Lock Guides leaves out guide paths.
Every change in the Image Trace panel traced the selected Image Trace
object again at once, and there was no way to adjust several settings
first and trace once.
The panel now has a Preview checkbox before Trace. It is on by default
and kept with the UI preferences; Reset to Default leaves it. With
Preview off, setting changes wait in the panel until Trace applies them
as one undo step, or until Preview is turned on again. When Preview is
turned on with no Image Trace object selected, the object is traced
with the waiting changes when it is selected again. A change of view
keeps the waiting settings, and selecting another Image Trace object
shows that object's own settings. The control channel's ui.set takes
imageTracePreview.
ui.render, which render_preview and screenshot call in the headless
session and in the app, rendered the artboard with the canvas options:
8-bit compositing and edges smoothed shape by shape. A PNG export
composites in floating point and supersamples edges, so the preview
showed edge colors the exported file does not have, most visibly where
shapes meet edge to edge.
ui.render now renders with the options of a PNG export on white, so
its pixels equal the export's at the same scale. render_preview also
no longer enlarges an artboard smaller than max_side: with the default
max_side of 1024, a 612 x 792 page came back as an interpolated
791 x 1024 image, and it now comes back at 612 x 792. docs/mcp.md and
docs/control-protocol.md describe this.
Review of #3925: the spooled job turned every sheet wider than tall, so
custom paper that is wide in Portrait (a 4 × 2 in label) went to the queue
tall, and a Portrait + Transverse page was turned back. Only the sheets
whose paper the layout turned to landscape (not transverse) are written
upright now.
The desktop print service asked for upright pages on every platform, but
craft-print already turns each sheet to its own orientation on Windows:
only macOS asks for them now; Linux keeps main's behaviour.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
A landscape print job was a page wider than tall, and `lp` on macOS puts
each page on the paper as it is: on upright Letter it printed unturned,
cut off on the right (checked with cupsfilter through an AirPrint
driver). Saving the PDF and printing it from Preview worked because
Preview turns the page.
`file.print` takes `forPrinter`: a page wider than tall is written
upright, the art turned a quarter anticlockwise as a printer driver turns
a landscape job. Page by page, so auto-rotated jobs that mix wide and tall
artboards print right too. The desktop print service asks for it
(`PrintService::turns_landscape`); saved PDFs, PostScript, the preview and
the browser's print dialog keep landscape pages as they are.

A save without options reuses the options the document was last saved
with in that format. Their artboard, artboards and range name artboards
by number, so once artboards were deleted or moved, the save wrote
other artboards or was refused: with three artboards, a PDF saved with
range "2" wrote the third artboard after the first was deleted, and one
saved with range "1, 3" was refused after the third was deleted. The
same held for SVG saves, a legacy .ai, and .ai and native files saved
with separateArtboards. file.formatOptions and SVG Options showed the
same numbers.
The document now keeps the ids of the artboards it had when it was
saved, and the remembered pick follows them: an artboard deleted since
is left out, one that moved is named by its new number, and the rest of
the pick is kept. A range open at its end ("2-") is written out as the
artboards it named once artboards are added. When none of the artboards
the save used is left, the pick is left out, and the save writes the
artboards it writes when none is named. A range of "all" stays as it
is. An artboard given to the save is still refused when the document
does not have it.
A new artboard no longer takes the id of an artboard deleted earlier in
the same document (Document::retire_artboard_id), or of one an undo took
away: the highest id given out is shared with the undo history, so a
new artboard is not taken for an earlier one.
file.revert keeps the pick only when the file read back has the
artboards the document had at the save, with the same ids in the same
order. A PDF saved with a range holds only those pages, and one saved
without preserveEditing reads back with new ids in page order, so their
picks are left out.
CodeRabbit findings #2, #16, #31, #103, #114, #124, #162, #179, #182, #183, #185:
- Shortcut import review: example names for each code in one pass over the rows.
- Gradients: a midpoint stop is mixed from its two stops; freeform recolor samples its
increasing positions with one advancing search (`Gradient::sample_increasing_with`).
- Recovery: image entry names are looked up by address, and dead ones swept when the map
doubles, not on every image.
- Script checker: include cycles from strongly connected components (iterative Tarjan), not
a reachability row per file.
- Batch step references copy at most 256 MB of values for one step.
- DOCX: style ids over 256 bytes are ignored where defined and where used.
- DXF: layouts keep at most 4 MB of names; a hatch's loops count against the node limit.
- Freehand and Liquify: past 1000 samples a drag previews every n/1000 samples, strokes keep
at most 100,000 samples, and the stroke kept is previewed in full before it is committed.

CodeRabbit findings #4, #34, #46, #51, #77, #101, #170, #171, #188:
- `vectorcraft_geom::flatten`: kurbo's flatten with each curve's tolerance raised so it makes
at most ~4096 segments (non-finite curves become a line); the canvas outline and
variable-width strokes use it.
- Plug-ins: a heavy filter's budget is the host's `Limits::heavy_fuel`/`heavy_wall_time_ms`,
never more; a start function runs on one fuel slice; the effect cache holds at most ~1M
anchors of inputs and results, and doesn't keep a result past a quarter of that.
- Loaded textures are cached by their PNG (base64 spacing doesn't matter), and live textures
hold at most 512 MB together.
- Revolve draws the source path when the faces' paint copies would pass 256 MB.
- Color books: names with prefix and suffix take at most 64 MB.
- ICC: localized-name (`mluc`) records over 1 MB together are refused before moxcms copies them.

An AppKit local event monitor (apps/vectorcraft/src/mac_tablet.rs) reads each mouse and tablet event's pressure and the pen's end before winit's view handles it and writes them into the canvas's StylusFeed. The feed keeps the pressure of each pointer move, and the canvas pairs them with the frame's moves, so a fast stroke keeps its curve and each point its own pressure; mouse event coalescing is off. The eraser end selects the Eraser tool, as on Linux. Ported from PhotoCraft's crates/tablet (pressure and eraser end only).
New Window was enabled in the menus and in the control channel's menu
listing, but choosing it opened nothing and answered with the internal
note "multiple windows land with M11.5". It is now disabled, as Window >
Arrange's unimplemented items already are, and a direct call fails with
a message meant for the user, translated in every catalog.
