Fifteen Preferences options were stored but read by nothing. They now act,
through the existing plumbing (ToolContext for the tools, the prefs read by the
canvas for the view), and reach agents through prefs.set:
- General: Show Tool Tips (off: no widget's tool tip comes due), Double Click
To Isolate, Zoom with Mouse Wheel (the wheel zooms about the pointer,
Shift-wheel scrolls up and down, Cmd/Ctrl-wheel sideways), Use Precise
Cursors (Pen, Eyedropper, Slice and Blend pointers become a crosshair).
- Selection & Anchor Display: Tolerance (objects, anchors and handles, in
place of the fixed 3 and 4 px), Object Selection by Path Only (compound
paths too), Command Click to Select Objects Behind (cycles down the objects
under the pointer; not when Cmd only borrows the selection tool), Zoom to
Selection (Zoom In/Out centre the selection), anchor Size, Highlight anchors
on mouse over (Direct Selection).
- Type: Number of Recent Fonts (up to 15 Recent Fonts slots).
- Guides & Grid: guide and grid Color and Style (lines or dots), Grids In Back.
The canvas's context menu, panel drops and hover highlight pick objects like
the selection tools. The control channel gets ui.wheel (with modifiers held
like ui.click) so agents can turn the wheel. The rest of #394 stays open.

Choosing a perspective tool shows the grid, but the canvas also re-selected the tool after a
Cmd-drag with the borrowed Selection tool, so a grid hidden with the tool chosen came back after
any Cmd-drag. `Session::switch_tool` (and the app's `restore_tool`) switch without choosing; the
temporary-tool return uses it.

The grid was drawn whenever its `visible` flag was set or a perspective
tool was active, and choosing the Perspective Grid tool (Shift+P) didn't set
the flag. So with the tool chosen, View > Perspective Grid > Hide Grid
(perspective.grid.show) turned the hidden flag on instead of off and the
grid stayed on screen however it was toggled.
Choosing a perspective tool now shows the grid (sets `visible`, view state,
no undo step), and the grid, its widget and the Perspective Grid tool's
handles are drawn only while it is visible. Hide Grid hides it with the
tool still chosen; choosing the tool again shows it.

Between paths, the Pen now adds an anchor where a click lands on a
segment of a selected path and deletes the anchor a click lands on,
with the add and delete cursors while hovering, as in the reference
app. The ends of a selected open path still continue it. Shift held,
or General > Disable Auto Add/Delete (a stored preference nothing read
until now, passed to tools as ToolContext::auto_add_delete), starts a
new path instead.

Typing with an input method (the macOS Japanese IME and the like) used to
insert the raw keys (romaji came in as ASCII): egui's Ime events weren't
handled.
- Tools gain `ime_preedit` / `composing` / `ime_caret`; the Type tool lays
the marked text out in place inside its typing session, underlined (the
clause being converted thicker), and commits it through `text_input`.
Character ranges from the IME convert to byte ranges in one place. A
cancelled composition leaves no empty undo step; an empty clear with
nothing marked never deletes the selection.
- The UI sends Text and Ime events to the tool in order, sends IMEOutput
every frame while text is edited (what lets egui-winit enable the IME
and place its candidate window at the caret, or the converting clause),
and holds back keys, Enter/Escape, clipboard, single-key shortcuts and
menu commands (Undo, Cut, Select All… also from the native menu) while
composing. A click, a tool switch or a style change ends the
composition with the marked text kept as typed; on macOS the IME is
told to discard it (NSTextInputContext.discardMarkedText) so it doesn't
come back in the next input.
- Undo during a typing session also ends the Type tool's session, so its
caret and marked text follow the document.
- Tests: tools (char → byte ranges, underlines and candidate position),
engine (compose → commit is one step, cancel leaves no step, a click
commits, Undo mid-composition is safe), ui-egui (synthetic Ime events:
compose, commit, ⌘Z held back, IME output, click and app switch).
Checked by hand on macOS 27 with the Japanese IME (romaji input, convert,
commit, cancel, Undo/Redo after commit, click away, Latin mode, app
switch). Not checked: Windows and Linux IMEs, the web build.

The Perspective Grid tool's left and right ground-level points move the whole
grid; the left and right extents are separate (extentRight; Alt drags both,
Shift goes by whole cells); a cell size widget sits up the line where the planes
meet; Shift keeps a vanishing point on the horizon and the ground points and
origin on one axis. The Plane Switching Widget stays put in a corner of the
document window (ViewInfo/ToolContext carry the window as a ScreenFrame), takes
its clicks with any tool while the grid shows (the Perspective Selection tool
too while it's hidden), and 1-4 pick the left, horizontal, right and no plane.
Double-clicking the Perspective Grid tool opens Perspective Grid Options
(show the widget, its corner; perspective.widget.options, kept with the
preferences).

Holding the brush still keeps Twirl, Pucker and Bloat applying, scaled by the
time held: a new Tool::tick (time supplied by the host: canvas frames, or
`holdMs` on ui.pointer / pointer_gesture events) repeats the last point every
0.1 s, one more dab there. Liquify never touches graphs, meshes, type, symbols,
images, or envelopes, repeats and blends with their contents, nor guides in
selection mode; those under the brush come back in `skipped` with a `warning`
that the status bar shows (UiRequest::Status). A drag applies only the dabs
each new sample adds (the stroke's state is kept between previews), giving the
same result as the whole stroke, so journal replay still reproduces it.

Each tool keeps its options (a table in vectorcraft_tools::settings) when another
tool is chosen, across document switches, and in the saved preferences
(Prefs::tool_settings). The 7 Liquify tools share one set of Global Brush
Dimensions; the Symbolism tools share their brush. tool.setOption takes
{values} and a `tool` (another tool's options are stored for later), returns
the options, and works headless (MCP host command).

Clicking with the Type tool runs text.create at once, and ending the edit
(Escape, another tool, a click elsewhere) only stopped editing, so every stray
click left an invisible empty text object and a "Type" history step.
The Type tool now remembers the point type its click placed and, when editing
ends with it still empty, runs the new text.discardEmpty command: it removes
the text and, when nothing else changed since the step that created it, drops
those steps so neither the document nor the history keeps a trace. A command
from outside the tool that takes the edited text out of the selection
(Deselect, a Layers panel pick) or removes it now ends the edit too
(Tool::after_command). Dragged area-type frames and type in or on a path keep
their frame.

The Slice tool (Shift+K) drags out a user slice (Shift square, Alt from the
centre, snapping to ruler guides) as one undo step through
object.slice.create. The Slice Selection tool selects slices (Shift
toggles, object.slice.select), moves them (object.slice.move; object
slices move their objects), resizes a user slice by its handles
(object.slice.setRect), opens Slice Options on a double click and deletes
with Delete (object.slice.delete). Hidden or locked slices can't be
picked. Both tools have cursors drawn in code.

Copy and Cut also offer other apps a PNG of the copied objects, a PDF
with On Copy: PDF, and plain text when every copied object is type
(clipboard.flavours; clipboard.exportPng {scale?}, exportPdf,
exportText). Paste outside text editing takes what another app copied:
SVG, then PDF (clipboard.importPdf), then plain text as point text
(clipboard.importText), then a bitmap embedded at the view centre
(clipboard.importImage {dataBase64, mime?, center?}); pasting our own
copy keeps the lossless internal clipboard, and Cmd+V pastes a bitmap
that comes with no text. Services gains system_clipboard
(SystemClipboard: write, holds_ours, read, has): on Windows every
format at once, on macOS and Linux one (the text, else the PNG); the
web keeps SVG text only. With When pasting text: Keep Plain Text, text
the Type tool copied pastes without its formatting.

The General unit is the active document's units: Preferences > Units >
General sets them (one undo step) and is the units new documents start
in (and the unit shown with no document open); Document Setup changes
only the document. The Transform panel, Properties, the Control bar, the
Info panel, rulers, the status bar, Align spacing, Tabs, paragraph
indents, Pattern Options, dialog distances (Move, shape sizes, path
dialogs, Artboard Options, effect distances, Transform Each, parameter
dialogs), New Document and the canvas measurement labels (smart-guide
sizes, moves, the Measure tool, the Live Corners radius) all follow it,
live. Units > Type drives font size, leading and baseline shift; Units >
Stroke also reaches the Appearance panel and the Magic Wand weight
tolerance. Typed units ("5 mm", "12 pt") work in any field; all ten
units are choices; length preferences show in their unit and accept a
unit; offset/simplify/grid/type-size params read typed units. Typed text
starting with a multi-byte character no longer panics the parser.

Shipped code no longer unwraps, expects or panics: every one of the 124
unwrap()/expect()/panic!/unreachable! sites outside tests now handles the
failure (Result/Option, ?, let-else, defaults) and reports errors to the user.
- Lints: workspace clippy denies unwrap_used, expect_used, panic, todo,
unimplemented and unreachable; clippy.toml allows them in tests, and
integration tests, examples and testkit opt out explicitly.
- Safety net (vectorcraft_engine::guard): a panic in a top-level command rolls
the document back and returns EngineError::Internal; a panicking tool is
reset; the MCP server answers with an internal error and keeps serving; the
UI frame and each control request are guarded.
- APIs that hid failures now return them: Rendered::to_png/to_jpeg/to_webp
return Result (JPEG/WebP errors used to write empty files),
FontDb::face returns Option, Region::top returns Option.
- Fuzzing: engine/tests/import_fuzz.rs feeds garbage, hostile and mutated SVG
and PDF through import → render → export (30k cases locally, no panics).
- Docs: AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md rule, docs/development.md "Robustness" section,
README pointer and a PR template checklist.

With Use Preview Bounds on, the Transform panel, Properties and Control bar
X/Y/W/H, the Selection tool's bounding box, Align, Distribute and
Distribute Spacing measure visual bounds (the whole stroke). setBounds sets
the visual box, scaling the path so that kept or scaled strokes land on
the typed size. object.align/distribute/distributeSpacing take
bounds?: "preview"|"geometric"; the Align flyout item shows and toggles the
preference through prefs.set.

Double-clicking the Eyedropper opens Eyedropper Options (dialog
eyedropperOptions): raster sample size (point, 3x3, 5x5) and Picks Up /
Applies trees (transparency; focal fill colour, transparency, overprint;
focal stroke colour, transparency, overprint, weight, cap, join, miter,
dash; character and paragraph attributes). The options live in the
preferences (Prefs::eyedropper, eyedropper.setOptions, prefs key
eyedropper) and replace the earlier appearance/transparency switches.
appearance.copyFrom takes pickUp/apply overrides, reverse (Alt-click:
the selection's attributes onto the clicked object) and append
(Shift+Alt-click: add the source's fills and strokes). Type copies font,
size and paragraph attributes to type. Clicking an image samples its
pixels; sampled colours keep their colour model.

paint.freeform.addPoint/setPoint/deletePoint/addLine/splitLine/selectPoint
and the paint.freeform.get query edit the freeform gradient behind the active
proxy (one undo step each; errors on other paints). The session keeps the
selected point. The Gradient tool on a freeform gradient selects and drags
points, adds points on the art (joined in Lines mode) and on lines, and
deletes the selected point. The Gradient panel shows the Draw toggle and the
selected point's colour, opacity, spread and Delete Point; the Color panel
recolours the selected point.

Gradient tool handles (a drawn vector's start and end, the end handle and the moved start) snap to anchors, edges
and smart guides, with the guide overlays; Shift constrains to 45° steps from the Constrain Angle preference
(`ToolContext::constrain_angle`, `constrain_angle_from` in geom). Double-clicking a toolbar button runs the new UI
command `tool.options {tool}`: the Gradient tool opens the Gradient panel, the Eyedropper opens Eyedropper Options
(`eyedropper.setOptions {appearance?, transparency?}`, which `appearance.copyFrom` honours and its params override).

The double-click that opens the popover lands outside it in the same frame, so the popover
closed as soon as it opened; only a later click elsewhere closes it now. The selected stop
remembers the document, first selected object and proxy it was picked on (Session::selected_stop),
so selecting other art or toggling Fill/Stroke no longer lets Delete or the arrows edit a stop
on a different gradient.

Clicking a fill or stroke row runs appearance.setActiveItem; the toolbar,
Control bar and Properties proxies and the Color, Swatches, Gradient,
Stroke and Transparency panels show and edit that item, and the gradient
tool's annotator follows it. paint.setFill/setStroke, stroke.set/
setAdvanced, paint.editGradient/setGradientGeom and transparency.set take
item (omitted: the active item, null: the top one). Item edits and the
appearance.* commands address the selected objects' own stacks, so a
group's own fills no longer leak into its contents. Any selection change
clears the active item.
