An earlier full-CI run on the identical source panicked in the randomized `ai_mutated_save_never_panics` test; the cause remains unresolved. This five-fix batch does not claim to repair that failure. Scores and hours unchanged. - **Width-point creation (G1):** double-click a stroked segment with the Width tool to open Width Point Edit using sampled side widths. OK creates the point and optionally adjusts adjoining widths in one undo step. Cancel or Delete discards a prospective point without changing the document or redo history. Command and pointer tests cover profiles, compound paths, adjoining adjustment, existing-point editing and Undo/Redo. Message-catalog checks and full CI passed; the original capture verifies opening and Cancel, and the dialog layout was reviewed (2026-10-13: 28 focused Width tests, all seven cargo xtask ci stages, and a headless opening/Cancel capture with original PNG review). Transform, Properties and Control X/Y fields measure from it and convert entered positions back to absolute command coordinates. The origin survives every native format version and compression; geometry, guides and patterns stay in place. With Direct Selection and corners of one path selected, Corner and Corner Radius set the kind and radius of those corners (`object.setLiveShape`); a live rectangle's and polygon's own rows already do. Each edit is one undo step. The overview's Variable Font icon was already in Character. Typing a new name and pressing Enter or clicking elsewhere renames that artboard in one undo step, as the Artboards panel's rename does (`artboard.setProps {index, name}`); pressing Escape or leaving the field empty keeps the old name. Artboard Options has a Background Color row with a list that sets None, White or Black, and a color button. The canvas draws the artboard's paper in the color, multiplied with the paper color while Simulate Colored Paper is on, and the transparency grid still covers it. Pastes follow the drawing mode ([drawing modes](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/learn-drawing-basics/drawing-modes-overview.html)) (#3705): in Draw Inside, Paste, Paste in Place and Paste on All Artboards put the copies inside the object drawn into, in one undo step, Paste Remembers Layers aside; in Draw Behind, Paste in Place and Paste on All Artboards put them just below the selection; Paste in Front and Paste in Back ignore the mode. Shift+D cycles Draw Normal → Draw Behind → Draw Inside → Draw Normal, skipping Draw Inside unless one path, compound path or type is selected. With the object drawn into isolated (a double-click on it with the Selection tool), art drawn or pasted inside it takes isolation mode into its clip group, so it can be clicked and isn't dimmed, as art added in isolation mode belongs with what is isolated ([isolation mode](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/manage-objects/select-objects/isolate-objects.html)) (#3705); undo or redo that removes the isolated object ends isolation mode. - **Drawing:** Pen, Curvature, anchor tools, Pencil, Paintbrush, Blob Brush, Smooth, Path Eraser, Join. Direction handles dragged with Direct Selection or the Anchor Point tool snap to smart guides, and Shift keeps them at 45° steps from their anchor. The Pen continues any open path from the end clicked, and while drawing, a click on an end of another open path joins the two into one (#776). The Curvature tool edits any selected path, whatever drew it, keeping its shape except where edited (#798): a click on a point makes it current and a drag moves it, re-curving only its two segments; Alt-click or double-click toggles it smooth or corner and Delete removes it; a click on a segment adds a point without changing the shape; with an end of an open path current, clicks go on from it and its other end closes it (`path.curvatureEdit`). Every point a drawing tool places snaps to Smart Guides through one snapper (#506): the Pen's and Curvature tool's anchors, the Pencil's ends, the shape tools' start and dragged corner or radius (Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Star, Line Segment, Arc, Spiral, the grids), the Type tool's click and frame, a new artboard's corners. A filled Pencil path keeps a stroke of None (#1804, part of #1679). While a Pencil or Paintbrush stroke is drawn back to within Close Paths When Ends Are Within of its start, the cursor shows the closing ring and a release there closes the path, as [Draw straight lines with the Pencil tool](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/draw-shapes/draw-straight-lines-with-the-pencil-tool.html) describes for the Pencil. The [ and ] keys reach the Blob Brush, the Eraser and the Symbolism tools in the app (#1734, part of #1661). With the Blob Brush, Shift held during a drag keeps the stroke on the horizontal or vertical line through the press point, whichever is nearer to the pointer (90° steps from the Constrain Angle preference), and the points dragged since Shift went down move to the other line when the pointer crosses to it; the points dragged while Shift is up follow the pointer. - Curvature point markers are circular, with no direction handles. The curve through the points (`curvature_spline` in `crates/tools/src/draw2.rs`) makes each stretch of three points follow the circle through them: a smooth point's handles lie along that circle's tangent, each `chord / (3 cos²(α/2))` long (α between handle and chord, capped at 90°), and the ends of an open path mirror their neighbour's tangent in their chord, so a J or a U curves evenly, a turn tighter than 30° comes to a point, and uneven spacing doesn't loop; the rubber band, a dragged or inserted point and `path.convertAnchor` to smooth use the same rule, while the Pencil's fitting keeps its own; `tests_draw2.rs` checks that the rubber band is the path the click makes (#1236, in part). The Smooth tool smooths only the stretch of path under the drag (#1547, fixes #1512). + Curvature point markers are circular, with no direction handles. While Alt is held, the Paintbrush (before a press and while drawing) shows a closing cursor (a crosshair with a ring), and so does the Pencil with Alt key toggles to Smooth Tool off when Alt is pressed after the drag starts; releasing the mouse button with Alt still held closes the path. A Pencil drag started with Shift or Alt held draws a straight line instead, which stays open. With Shift held at the press, the Pencil draws a straight line from the press point to the pointer at 45° steps from the Constrain Angle, as [Draw straight lines with the Pencil tool](https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/desktop/draw-shapes-and-paths/draw-shapes/draw-straight-lines-with-the-pencil-tool.html) describes; pressed on an end of a selected open path, the line continues the path from that end (part of #3799). With Option/Alt held at the press and Alt key toggles to Smooth Tool off, the Pencil draws a straight line at any angle, whose ends snap to Smart Guides, and it stays open when Alt is still held at the release; Shift and Alt together keep the 45° steps (#3799). While Shift or Alt is held before the press, the Pencil shows a straight-line cursor (a crosshair with a short line), and over an end of a selected open path, where the line continues the path, a path-continuation cursor (the same line leaving a small square), as the page describes. - **Shapes:** all shape tools (including Flare) and the line, arc, spiral and grid tools. Space held while dragging out a shape, line, arc, spiral or grid moves it at its current size. While a grid is dragged out, Up/Down change its rows (concentric dividers) and Left/Right its columns (radial dividers). A click with a grid tool asks for the size, the divider counts and the grid options (#1377, in part): a skew for each set of dividers, Use Outside Rectangle As Frame or Create Compound Path From Ellipses, and Fill Grid; they are parameters of `shape.rectangularGrid` and `shape.polarGrid`, stay as the tool's options and apply to drags too. The curve a skew percentage follows and the direction of the radial skew are our own (the public documentation gives neither), and the dialogs have no reference point locator. An ellipse's Pie Start and End Angle and Invert Pie (Transform and Properties panels' Ellipse Properties, `object.setLiveShape {pieStart, pieEnd, invertPie}`) cut it as a pie (#812). Point size is the transformed em-height axis, independent of glyph ink bounds; affine rotation, reflection and shear are retained. Text Wrap, Type on a Path effects (Rainbow/Skew/3D Ribbon/Stair Step/Gravity) and Options (Flip, Align to Path, Spacing; OK keeps the type where it is), type on a path's start, centre and end brackets (Selection and Direct Selection drag them to set where the type runs, slide it along its path and, across the path, flip it: #429), Character and Paragraph Styles (override-preserving redefine), paragraph attributes per paragraph (alignment, indents, spacing, hyphenation, hanging punctuation, tab stops, paragraph style, direction, mojikumi and leading model; the Paragraph, Tabs and Paragraph Styles panels act on the paragraphs the Type tool's selection or caret touches, Return continues the paragraph's style, threads and SVG keep them), Area Type Options (rows/columns/inset/first baseline, vertical Align Top/Center/Bottom/Justify per row/column, reflowing non-rectangular frames and text wrap), threaded text across any closed shapes, Fit Headline, the Every-line Composer for justified and ragged text (paragraph-wide breaks for an even rag, Single-line per object from the Paragraph panel menu or `text.setFormat {composer}`). Area type resizes like Illustrator's type areas: a bounding-box handle drag (Selection tool) or Area Type Options Width/Height size the frame and the text reflows at its size (threads too); Direct Selection drags a frame corner or edge (`text.reshapeArea`), and an anchor of the path of type on a path outside perspective, the type reflowing along it (`text.reshapePath`, #3980). Point type still scales. Auto Size: the frame height follows the text after every edit, in the same undo step (rectangular frames of horizontal type in one row; columns get the least height that holds them; a height set by hand or threading turns it off), and the "Auto Size New Area Type" preference gives it to new area type. Shrink Text to Fit (beyond Illustrator): overflowing area type scales its sizes, leading and baseline shifts down by the largest factor (in 0.1 pt steps of the first run, down to a minimum percentage) that fits, at layout time so every export sees it. `text.areaOptions` and `document.inspect` report overflow and the shrink factor. The Selection tool shows the type widget beside selected type's bounding box (hollow on point type, filled on area type); double-clicking it converts between them (Type › Convert To Area Type / Convert To Point Type), keeping the text and its styles in place. Variable fonts list every named instance as a style of their family (Figtree Light to Black and their italics, Bahnschrift, Segoe UI Variable), and the instance chosen is shaped, drawn, outlined and measured at its axis settings; PDF and SVG embed it as that instance. The Character panel's Variable Font sliders set each axis (see Fonts). Beyond Illustrator: inline graphics (`text.insertInline`, Type ▸ Insert Inline Symbol) set a document symbol in a run of type as one character that flows, wraps and justifies like a glyph (InDesign-style inline objects, e.g. mana symbols in card rules text): sized to a multiple of the font size, centred on the cap height, opening up tall lines, following Redefine Symbol; a character of its run's size for Character Alignment and Top-to-Top leading, placed by the bidi reordering in right-to-left text (a neutral U+FFFC); drawn on the canvas, kept as live text plus a `` in SVG and as vector art in PDF; Backspace removes it whole. Hebrew and Arabic are laid out right to left with the Unicode bidirectional algorithm (embedded Latin and numbers keep their direction, lines put in visual order after wrapping) in point, area and path type, with caret, selection and arrow keys in visual order; each paragraph's direction comes from its first strong character unless Paragraph Direction sets it (Paragraph panel with Show Indic Options, `text.setFormat {direction}`), and new type aligns to the start of its direction. SVG export outlines right-to-left text. Arabic typefaces: builds made with a craft-fonts checkout that holds its Arabic families (Noto Sans Arabic, the Arabic fallback, plus Cairo, Tajawal, Almarai, IBM Plex Sans Arabic, Noto Kufi Arabic, Amiri, Alexandria, Fustat, Reem Kufi, Aref Ruqaa and Gulzar once craft-fonts adds them, storytold/craft-fonts#11; releases get them when their craft-fonts pin moves) list them in the font menus on desktop; the web build fetches them from beside the wasm (Noto Sans Arabic before start, so Arabic never shows as boxes, the rest in the background). Font Size and Leading are combo boxes in the Character and Properties panels (Font Size in the Control bar too, beside the Character link, font family and style): type, step with ↑/↓ or the spinner, scrub the label, or pick a preset (6–72 pt, shown in the type unit; Leading also Auto), each pick one undo step; Kerning and Tracking list -100…200; a size, leading, kerning or tracking the selected text doesn't share shows blank (#458). Type › Bold and Italic (beyond Illustrator, as page layout apps have them; Cmd+Shift+B / Cmd+Shift+I while the Type tool edits text) switch the selected type to its family's own Bold or Italic face and back, keeping its width (a Narrow face stays Narrow); a family without that face says so (#724). The commands that make or restyle type (and the MCP `add_text` tool) say in their result when area type does not fit its frame, and `add_text` takes Auto Size and Shrink Text to Fit (#1500, fixes #1471). Cmd+Shift+C (Align center) works on Windows and Linux too (#1940). A double-click on area type's bottom middle handle turns on Auto Size (#1940). Print and Print Preview warn about the area type and type on a path that prints without the text that doesn't fit, and give their ids. A tab stop in the Tabs panel drags from where the press landed, a stop just added included (#1487, fixes #1458). Area type in a non-rectangular shape moves a word too wide for the top lines down to the first line that holds it instead of breaking it (#1617, fixes #1615). Stylistic sets (ss01–ss20), stylistic and titling alternates, proportional and lining figures, and superscript and subscript glyphs can be turned on as OpenType features of a character style (`text.setStyle {features}`), and the OpenType panel keeps them (#1611, fixes #1607). Escape while typing ends the edit, keeps the type selected and switches to the Selection tool (#1802, #1686, #1656). Select › Same matches type on its characters' fill and stroke (#1746, #1737). `text.create`, `text.createInPath` and the MCP `add_text` tool take `justify`, so point type can be centred on or end at its point (#1752, #1748). The Every-line Composer composes a paragraph whose characters differ in line metrics (type size, font, leading or vertical scale, or an inline graphic taller than the text) in rectangular area type, rows and columns included. Exports refuse a `.ait` with an error that names `file.saveAsTemplate`, and `vectorcraft-cli convert in.pdf out.ait` and `run --export out.ait` write the template as `file.saveAsTemplate` does. - - SVG/SVGZ in and out with SVG Options, Preserve Editing, symbols, filters, rich text and physical units (SVG type under a transform or `viewBox` scale opens at the size it draws at, the scale moved into its size, leading, baseline shift and strokes, a stretch, skew or rotation kept as its transform: #396; a top-level group with a clip path, such as a clipped Inkscape layer, opens as a layer with a clipping mask, its name kept: #420; hidden objects written hidden on Save and `convert`, and `data-*` attributes kept as the objects' own data: #522; top-level groups open as layers named from `data-name`, else the id, also when one more group (a transform on all the art, a ``) wraps them, hidden ones hidden, and a file whose art sits loose under a root `` with an id (or `data-name`), as one-layer exports write it, opens with its one layer named from it; nested groups stay groups, except the sublayers VectorCraft writes, marked `data-vc-layer`, and Inkscape sublayers, which open as sublayers in their layer's colour: #372); PDF and PDF-compatible `.ai` in and out (layers, with hidden ones kept hidden with their art and nested ones as sublayers, on pages of up to 64 million operators, art whose layer can't be told going to a hidden, non-printing layer rather than showing or printing: #419; strokes kept live, a fill and a stroke of one outline as one object; a type object's stroke written as each glyph's outline stroked back on the type, so it stays one editable object; lines wrapped in a frame (each wrapped line ending in a space, one left edge, leading and font) back as one area type object, left aligned or justified with its paragraph spacing, where laying it out breaks the lines where the file does; glyphs set apart by gaps wider than a space (a barcode's digit groups) keeping their places; layers stacked as the pages mark them even when one first paints on a later page, art ending a layer's marked content or a clip closing in a later layer kept in its own layer, and layers with no art kept empty: #508; art reaching past a plain PDF's page clipped to its crop box, as PDF viewers show it, each such object in a clip group of its own (a PDF-compatible `.ai` opens whole: #675); a `.ai` on its trim boxes with the bleed boxes round them as the document's bleed, as Crop To › Trim opens a PDF (#1266); masks, editable text with type set along a curve coming back as type on a path, each artboard's art on its own page only, an `.ai`'s white page under its layers left out rather than coming in as art, spot colours, presets, security, marks and bleed, ICC output intents, raster effects, subset fonts, PDF/X, PDF layers, overprint, page thumbnails, fast web view, PDF 1.3). Overprint is kept from PDF import (opened, the PDF part of an `.ai`, placed) to PDF export: the graphics state's `/OP` and `/op` become the overprint of fills, strokes and type, so a spot colour over a process colour still overprints; a page whose overprint can't be read for certain knocks out with a note, as does `/OPM 0` being read as nonzero overprint (#1388; hand-written fixtures, `pdf/src/tests_import_overprint.rs`). A masked CMYK image (`/SMask`, `/Mask` or a colour key) keeps its inks too, its alpha coming in as a greyscale opacity mask. In imported PDF type, a space glyph the file draws between two words also keeps the next word where the file has it when the gap beside the space is wide, as VectorCraft's own export draws a tracked space: the space gets tracking of its own, and the wrapped lines of a justified paragraph still come back as one area type object when the word gaps on each line are alike (part of #2384). Letter-spaced PDF type, whether set with character spacing (`Tc`) or glyph by glyph, keeps its word spaces and gains none between its letters: the spacing a line's letters share is taken off each gap before a gap reads as a space. That holds on a line that also shows where its words break, with spaces the file draws or gaps wider than the rest; evenly spaced glyphs alone, which could be words of one letter, keep every gap as a space, as do glyphs set more than half an em apart, such as figures in columns. A function-based PDF shading (type 1) whose colour changes along one axis only, as a browser writes a repeating linear gradient, comes in as a linear gradient over its domain, each hard colour change two stops at one offset; one whose colour changes in two directions comes in as its average colour, with a warning. Either paints only over the shading's domain. Both came in as a flat grey that wasn't in the file (#3621). Each such shading is read once per import, and all of them within one budget of 200,000 function evaluations, so a file filling thousands of paths with long functions still opens in about a second (it took minutes); past the budget they come in as their average colour, then grey, with a warning. A gap between glyphs of two sizes is measured against the smaller one, so a word set beside a much larger one with no space glyph between them (a browser's margin between two sizes, as in `≤ 4` and a small `hours`) keeps its word space (#3623). SVG import's style cascade, used for hidden objects, non-scaling strokes and type, tests each element only against the `
