PhotoCraft reads GIMP's .xcf (and .xcf.gz) files, read only, through a new
reader in photocraft-io written from the public XCF specification: versions
0 to 26, uncompressed, RLE and zlib tiles, 8/16/32-bit integer and
16/32/64-bit float precisions (linear precisions get a linear profile),
pixel layers at any position, groups by item path with pass-through,
layer masks applied or disabled, opacity, visibility, locks, colour tags,
the 2.10 and legacy blend modes mapped to Photoshop's (modes without an
equivalent open as Normal with a note), the ICC profile, resolution,
guides, the comment, extra channels and the saved selection; indexed
images open as RGB. Text, vector and link layers open as their pixels;
layer effects, paths and floating selections are reported.
Fixtures are written by GIMP 3.2 itself (scripts/xcf_fixtures.py), each
with GIMP's merged rendering as a PNG. In gamma-encoded blend and
composite spaces our composite matches GIMP within 0.5/255; GIMP's
linear-light default, its Clip to backdrop and its clamp-after-alpha
for unbounded modes are documented and measured in docs/xcf.md.
cargo xtask --help and the layers command output both referred to plan/architecture.md, which does not exist in this repository; there is no plan/ directory at the root. The dependency layering rules are documented as section 3 of docs/architecture.md, so point both references there.
- corpus/atn: 16 sets from seven public repositories (MIT, BSD, Unlicense), fetched at pinned
commits by cargo xtask corpus --atn, verified against xtask/atn-corpus.sha256, licences next to
the files, rows in ATTRIBUTION.md and docs/development.md. photocraft-corpus takes only our own
generated files, so third-party sets are pins here, like psd-tools and ag-psd.
- photocraft-psd corpus_atn: every set parses and rewrites byte for byte (floor 16 files).
photocraft-engine corpus_atn: every set loads, saves and reloads to the same actions; the
steps still kept as Photoshop steps are capped (517 of 5 296 measured; generative AI and
scripts), and the first differing step is named on a mismatch.
- What the corpus found: localised panel names are platform legacy bytes (Mac Roman), now kept
verbatim with AtnItem::label from the descriptor's Unicode class name; exporters emitted
Photoshop defaults the importer had not read (now symmetric); setAdjustment carries its kind;
and 300 more steps map: transform without a reference, selection nudges, moves to the bottom,
View menu items, toolbox colours, clipping masks, ungroup, copy/paste styles, collapse groups,
layer comps. New example atn_roundtrip shows the first differing byte.
Progress docs per craftrules standards/progress-docs.md: target-app parity (merges parity-estimate.md), gaps, roadmap with alpha gate, readiness by audience (full / mainstream / essentials) with Opus 5.5 hours, and UI, brush, format, hardware and localization parity docs. docs/parity.md is now docs/parity-checklist.md.
The Windows test failure (file_dialog::tests::save_dialogs_remember_where_each_document_was_last_saved) is pre-existing on main: the test hard-codes POSIX paths.

The xtask usage line and the corpus status listing name --pixls and
corpus/pixls; the attribution row links each of the seven files' database
entries so the licence can be checked per file; -p raw no longer pushes
the crate into the list twice; and test-corpus --changed runs (and
fetches) the raw corpus when a file under crates/raw/ changed, matching
its CRITICAL entry.
* Open HEIC/HEIF photos (#355)
iPhones save HEIC by default and Photoshop opens it; PhotoCraft had no
HEIF code, so .heic was missing from File > Open and failed to decode.
Add Format::Heif to photocraft-codecs, decoded by heic-rs (pure Rust,
forbid(unsafe), MIT OR Apache-2.0, wasm-ready): single pictures and
grid-tiled photos, 8-bit to U8 and 10/12-bit to U16, auxiliary alpha,
ICC, EXIF and XMP. The container's irot/imir/clap are applied and EXIF
Orientation is rewritten to 1, so photos are never turned twice. Limits
are checked against the declared size before decoding. Read-only (no
pure-Rust HEVC encoder), listed in ASYMMETRIC_EXCEPTIONS.
File > Open (desktop, web) and the batch list accept heic/heif/hif.
Tests compare against Apple's own decode and a 16-bit source, cover
orientation, metadata, limits and every truncation; fixtures from
heic-rs and pillow-heif are attributed in ATTRIBUTION.md.

* HEIF: pin heic-rs exactly and add a decode_heif fuzz target
Review follow-up: heic-rs is young and parses untrusted files, so pin it
(=0.1.1) and fuzz the HEIF path. The target covers both orientation
paths and is meant to run with -timeout so a hang is reported, not
only a panic. It is added to the CI fuzz matrix.

* HEIF: a heic-rs panic is a malformed-file error, not a crash
Fuzzing decode_heif found two out-of-range slices in heic-rs 0.1.1 on
malformed files:
- in its box parser (boxes.rs:130), reachable from a 72-byte file, even
through the metadata-only probe;
- during HEVC reconstruction (hevc/decode/recon.rs:70).
The background job path catches panics, but the synchronous ones (jobs
off, the CLI) did not. The HEIF codec now runs the decoder under
catch_unwind and reports a panic as CodecError::Malformed, as
gpu/health.rs already does around wgpu.
The fuzz target also calls heic-rs directly, so its panics still reach
the fuzzer. The 72-byte input is a regression test, which fails
without the guard.

* HEIF: move the decoder into an optional photocraft-heif crate
The heic-rs decoding from #372 now lives in `crates/heif` (photocraft-heif, standalone, depends
only on heic-rs =0.1.1): probe, decode with a pixel limit, container transforms, alpha, 8/10-bit,
ICC/EXIF/XMP and the catch_unwind guard, behind a small API of its own (Info, Options, Decoded,
Error). photocraft-codecs uses it behind a new non-default `heif` feature; the apps and
photocraft-io forward it. HEIF detection, extensions and mime stay compiled in, so without the
feature a HEIC file is still recognised and opening it is a clear "HEIC/HEIF support isn't
included in this build of PhotoCraft" error. `cargo xtask layers` allows exactly codecs -> heif
between standalone crates.
The fixtures are no longer committed: `cargo xtask corpus --heif` fetches them from heic-rs
(tests/fixtures, v0.1.1) and pillow-heif (tests/images) at pinned commits, verified against
xtask/heif-corpus.sha256 (same bytes as the PR's copies). The fixture tests run with
`--features corpus,heif` (`cargo xtask test-corpus` enables both).

* Build CI and official binaries with HEIC support (--features heif)
CI test and clippy, the FreeBSD job, and the macOS, Linux (and Flatpak), FreeBSD, Windows and
web packaging all build with the `heif` feature; CI also tests codecs/io without it on Linux so
the "not in this build" path stays covered. `cargo xtask wasm` also checks photocraft-codecs with
`--features heif`.

* feat(xtask): report UI translation coverage
Add a deterministic per-language coverage report backed by a checked English key inventory. Reject malformed, duplicate, and unknown catalog keys, and document the invocation.

CI's `cargo fmt --all -- --check` has failed on every run because the
repo had no rustfmt config and was never formatted. Use the same settings
as EffectCraft/FilmCraft (max_width 160, use_small_heuristics Max), which
also keeps the churn small. Formatting only; no code changes.
