Tanish Manku 6368e6a851 GPU memory follow-ups (#5973 review): fit cleared on device loss and on the CPU canvas; measured when switching to a document whose canvas is current; notice names the 3/8 card cap; VRAM override documented; perf rows count memory like the app (#6458) 2026-10-15 21:37:05 -07:00
Tanish Manku 6d3443c098 GPU memory: discrete cards aren't charged for the document; GPU Memory preference; GPU Memory Full status (#5973)
* GPU memory: a graphics card's own memory isn't charged for the document; GPU Memory preference; GPU Memory Full in the status bar

Many layers hit a cliff: past what the GPU memory budget leaves for layer pages, every edit
that redraws the whole document (opacity, visibility, a nudge) goes to the CPU compositor.
Measured on 3000x2000 full-canvas layers (RTX 5090, 31 GB RAM, Memory Usage 8 GB): 150
layers took 2.6 s per such edit, 300 layers 6 s. The budget was Memory Usage minus the
document's pixels and History, which is right where the GPU shares system memory, but a
discrete card's memory doesn't hold the document, so 150 layers of 6 MP (3.6 GB) squeezed
the budget below what they needed.

- Automatic budget: discrete adapters are no longer charged for the document's pixels
(integrated and software adapters still are). 150 layers: 2.6 s -> 25 ms.
- Preferences › Performance › GPU Memory (MB, 0 = Automatic; performance.gpuMemoryMb) sets
  the budget outright. 300 layers with 12 GB: 6 s -> 45-72 ms.
- The status bar shows "GPU Memory Full" while the active document's layers don't fit
(both status bar styles); hovering gives the numbers, clicking opens Preferences ›
Performance. Its Graphics rows show the budget and what the layers need. The slow CPU
redraw notice gives the numbers and points at GPU Memory.
- Headless: the preference is a normal pref (prefs.set), and ui.state's perf.timings
reports gpuLayerFit {doc, needed, budget} next to gpuBudgetMb.

Next (owner-approved plan): after #5370, read the card's real limit from the driver
(wgpu memory budget thresholds) and shrink on out-of-memory; then redraw the visible
area on the GPU first when layers still don't fit.

* GPU memory: typed discrete check; the status and budget follow a GPU Memory change at once (measure_fit); perf rows P60/P61 for whole-document edits among 150 full-canvas layers under the app's budget

* GPU memory on top of #5234: memory_budget takes the card's memory (vram) and the GPU Memory value; the document's pixels are charged unless the card's own memory is known; a set GPU Memory is capped at the card's share; benches use video_memory

FinnNkandClaude Opus 5.5 297520b9c8 perf(gpu): cap the GPU memory budgets by a discrete GPU's own memory (#5234)
* perf(gpu): cap the GPU memory budgets by a discrete GPU's own memory

The compositor and canvas budgets came from system RAM only, so a 16 GB card in a 96 GB machine planned for up to 8 GB of compositor pages plus 24 GB of display textures. Detect a discrete adapter's dedicated memory (DXGI on Windows through winsafe, amdgpu sysfs on Linux) and cap each budget at three eighths of it. PHOTOCRAFT_VRAM_MB simulates a smaller card. Fixes #4536.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* perf(gpu): keep a 16-bit canvas on the GPU in 8-bit when floats don't fit

With the canvas budget capped by a small card's memory, a 16-bit document under the float-canvas pixel limit could need more than the budget as Rgba16Float and fall back to the CPU canvas although its Rgba8Unorm set fits. Choose the float canvas only when it fits the budget, which is now shared atomically so format_for can read it while the renderer is locked.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* perf(gpu): detect a card's memory once per adapter, and test the Linux reader

video_memory built a DXGI factory each time it was asked, three times at
startup; it now remembers the answer per (vendor, device), so a GPU retry
that picks another adapter still gets its own. The amdgpu sysfs reader
takes the drm folder as a parameter and is tested against a temporary
folder: the matching card's VRAM, a card without the file, garbage ids, a
malformed size, no match and no folder.

Tanish Manku c6a525cc99 Releasing a brush stroke no longer freezes: the commit takes the pixels the live stroke already drew (P32: 136 ms → 0.8 ms) (#2131)
* Releasing a brush stroke no longer freezes: the commit takes the pixels the live stroke already drew (P32: 136 ms → 0.8 ms)

Brush phase 4. On release the canvas dropped its live stroke and ran `paint.stroke` over every
point again (the whole stroke re-rendered), then re-composited the stroke's bounding box, although
the canvas already showed exactly those pixels. Long strokes froze for 100–250 ms at mouse-up
(#2068).

- `Session::offer_live_stroke` hands the finished live stroke to the next command. A
`paint.stroke` / `paint.pencil` whose command, document revision, params, seed and points match
it exactly takes its pixels instead of rendering (result `"fromLive": true`). Anything else
ignores the offer and renders as before. It still runs through the normal dispatch
(authorization, journal, one history step), and a replay renders identical pixels.
- The canvas feeds the release frame's last points to the live stroke first, then remembers the
stroke's per-step damage for one revision (`CommittedStroke`): each canvas cache re-composites
only the steps it hadn't shown, usually nothing, instead of the bounding box.
- P32 (brush release on a long stroke) becomes measurable: perf_scenarios times a 600-point
200 px soft stroke on 24 MP. 136 ms → 0.83 ms on the GPU canvas, 257 ms → 0.71 ms on the CPU
canvas (RTX 5090, release). Budget 16 ms, not enforced until a baseline run.
- Scorecard: TOOL-213-10 (⌃⌥-drag resize with readout) is done; TOOL-213-7 (live strokes for every
brush-based retouch tool) is partial (Spot Healing, Mixer Brush, Background Eraser and Pattern
  Stamp still aren't live).

* Mask view test: a commit that takes the live stroke uploads nothing it already showed

a8ad82dd46 GPU composite: reuse unchanged lower-stack chunks for property edits (#1169)
* perf(gpu): reuse unchanged lower-stack composite chunks

* test(gpu): verify half-float composite checkpoint reuse

* docs: record measured GPU composite reuse gains and limits

* perf(gpu): admit whole grid chunks, serve partial damage as sub-rect copies

Cache entries were keyed by the exact damage rectangle, so brush strokes
(a new partial rect every frame) filled the budget with entries that
never hit again. Entries are now whole chunk-aligned, chunk-sized grid
cells: a capture merges into the cell it overlaps at the rectangle's
offset, a read is served as a sub-rect copy of the covered part, and
coverage is tracked per cell so a resume only happens where every pixel
of the requested rectangle is cached. After a full render, any in-bounds
partial rectangle hits.

Regression test: two series of disjoint strokes inside the same chunks
leave composite_cache_bytes unchanged (no entry-per-rectangle growth),
a full refresh still finds its chunks and a top-layer edit afterwards
reuses them. The old partial-damage test now expects the covered-chunk
hit and checks outside-the-document renders admit nothing.

* docs: record the GPU reuse measurement in target-app-parity.md

The honest assessment moved from roadmap.md to target-app-parity.md on
main; keep main's roadmap and add only the dated measurement.

07e7a73636 Show non-square pixels on the canvas (#2594) (#2718)
View > Pixel Aspect Ratio and its Correction toggle only stored a value:
the canvas transform (ViewXform) had no notion of pixel aspect, so the
image was always drawn with square pixels.

ViewXform now carries the displayed pixel aspect ratio and stretches
document x by it before rotation and flip. Drawing, pointer-to-document
mapping, pan and zoom-about deltas, rulers, grid, Fit/Fill on Screen,
scrollbars, the Navigator's view box and paste-in-place visibility all
go through it. Correction is on by default, as in Photoshop. A corrected
view draws through the CPU canvas path, like a flipped one, since the
GPU shader assumes square pixels. The document's pixels are unchanged.

Sir StarchandBrandon Thomas 819bd47bf1 perf: bevel_bench, the cost of changing a chisel bevel's size (#2006 follow-up) (#2118)
#2006 made a bevel size change dearer on purpose (+10-75% on the GPU canvas,
2x for CPU text bevels) and asked for a bench of it under perf/.

`bevel_bench` renders a 12 MP document with one Chisel Hard inner bevel on
an anti-aliased ellipse (a smooth outline) or on a text paragraph (many thin
edges). Each case warms the caches one pixel below the size, then times
refreshes with the size growing by one pixel each, so the GPU canvas
rebuilds its distance fields every time (it keeps them while the size
shrinks) and the CPU compositor misses its map cache. Sizes 8, 50 and 250,
GPU and CPU, with `--scene`, `--size`, `--reps`, `--no-cpu` and `--json`.

Registered in perf/budgets.toml as P52-P59 with no budgets (track only,
like P45 and P46): GPU for ellipse and text at 8, 50 and 250, CPU at 8.
docs/scorecard.md is regenerated; the rows read "not run" until the next
baseline.

RTX 4080 SUPER, release, 9 reps, p50 ms, before #2006 (3bc49f5e) -> after:
ellipse GPU 88 -> 105 (8), 169 -> 199 (50), 305 -> 460 (250); text GPU
119 -> 140, 141 -> 252, 238 -> 557; CPU text at 8 402 -> 797. Runs vary by
about 20% on this machine.

kayrockscreenprintingandClaude Opus 5.5 54ff207004 Image › Adjustments: apply per tile in parallel (#1800)
adjust_surface now takes the layer's tiles and adjusts each one on its own rayon task, so a large layer needs one tile's buffers per thread instead of four full-layer copies. The result is bit-identical to the single pass for every adjustment kind, colour model and depth, with and without a soft selection (tiled_adjustment_matches_one_pass_over_the_content). Adds an invert scenario to large_image_bench.

Session::edit now reports empty damage when the step leaves every layer's pixels and the
document's compositing fields untouched (same_pixels: a bounded walk over the layer tree
comparing tiles by pointer), so a selection change no longer recomposites the whole canvas.

not a clipping base), so New Layer, New Group and their undo/redo report no damage. Adds the

* Wayland: drop guidance offers paste and this install's XWayland command (#338, #386)

winit 0.30 (eframe 0.36) delivers no file drops on Wayland. The notice told every
user to run `WAYLAND_DISPLAY= photocraft`, which does nothing for the AppImage
(no `photocraft` on PATH) or the Flatpak (fallback-x11 grants no X socket while
Wayland is available). It now names the command for this install (Flatpak flags,
the quoted $APPIMAGE path, or `photocraft`), omits it without an X server, and
offers pasting a copied image file with Edit › Paste's shortcut, which works on

BFlatandClaude Opus 5.5 f0208fd798 Move tool: layers overhanging the canvas keep their effect maps; moves copy 2x faster (#761, #128) (#893)
- A layer about the canvas's size keeps its whole effect region even where it overhangs the
edge, so the region keeps its size while the layer is dragged and the GPU moves its effect
maps with it instead of rebuilding the shape, distance fields and every effect each frame.
- Surface::translated moves a surface by copying encoded tile bytes tile to tile (no float
round trip, no full-size intermediate; whole-tile moves share the tiles): 2.3x faster than
to_interleaved + write_interleaved. Used by layer.translate, Move tool drags and
  algo::resample::translate_surface.
- perf_scenarios: Move tool drag frame rows (styled layer, full-canvas layer with and without
  a drop shadow).

BFlatandClaude Opus 5.5 244a99c39f Windows and Linux: one title bar with the app icon (no stacked OS bar); long context menus scroll (#986)
* Windows and Linux: one title bar with the app icon, like Photoshop

The window had the OS title bar stacked above PhotoCraft's own top bar. On
Windows and Linux the window now has no OS decorations and the top bar is
the title bar, as in VectorCraft and Photoshop on Windows:

- the app icon (brand.rs) leads the bar, before the menus;
- Minimize, Maximize/Restore and Close sit flush in the top-right corner
(Close turns red on hover; it runs File > Exit, so unsaved work is asked
  about first);
- the free gap between the menus and the controls still drags the window
  and a double-click there maximizes it;
- invisible 5 pt edges (12 pt corners) resize the window.

The right-hand group gets its own rect between the menus and the caption
buttons (egui's MenuBar takes the whole row, so it used to be laid out from
past the bar's end). Narrow windows drop what is also in a menu before
anything overlaps: Discord, then the theme toggle, then search, then the
workspace switcher narrows. macOS keeps its traffic lights.

New theme tokens caption_close / caption_close_text, Minimize / Maximize /
Restore in all 12 catalogs, and a --custom-titlebar flag for the snapshot
example.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Long right-click menus scroll inside the window instead of running off it

widgets::menu_scroll caps a context menu at the visible window height
(clear of a taskbar a too-tall window runs under, #315). egui moves the
popup up to fit, and it scrolls only when it is taller than the window.
Used by the Layers, canvas tool, Channels, Paths and document-tab menus;
the menu bar's menus already scroll (menu_nav::level).

304322960e Gaussian and Box Blur: large radii no longer slow down (live preview too) (#464) (#867)
Blurs run as box passes now filter the whole area at once instead of tile by tile: the
horizontal passes run over the source rows only and the vertical passes over column strips,
with the canvas edge repeated virtually instead of materialising a 3-sigma margin around every
tile (at radius 500 that margin was ~25 MP of floats per 4 MP tile, copied and transposed
several times). The results are written to the layer's tile columns in parallel.

Output matches the previous running sums (8-bit: identical except 114 of 2.1 M samples one
level apart; 16-bit: within 2/65535) and a direct-convolution oracle at every depth.

735bb09a98 Lossy WebP: a pure-Rust VP8 encoder with quality and lossless controls (#648) (#880)
* Lossy WebP: a pure-Rust VP8 encoder with quality and lossless controls (#648)

crates/codecs gains codecs/vp8: a clean-room VP8 key-frame encoder from RFC 6386
(boolean coder, 16x16 and 4x4 intra prediction with per-macroblock mode decision,
forward DCT/WHT paired with the bit-exact inverse transforms, dc/ac quantiser tables,
token coding with per-frame probability updates, skipped macroblocks). webp.rs wraps
the frame in the RIFF container (bare VP8, or VP8X with ALPH alpha and ICCP/EXIF/XMP).
EncodeOptions: webp_lossless now picks the encoder instead of erroring, webp_quality
(0-100) sets the quantiser; a lossy WebP reports a LossyCompression fidelity warning.

Export As: the WebP entry gets Quality and a Lossless switch (new tl! string in all
catalogs). CLI --quality, MCP/RPC doc_save quality and the engine's JPEG-style
quality turn a WebP lossy; without a quality WebP stays lossless as before.

Tests: tests/webp_lossy.rs decodes every file with image-webp (PSNR by quality,
sizes fall with quality and are >= 4x below lossless on noisy photos, flat frames
under 1.2 KB, alpha exact, metadata round trip, odd/tiny sizes, 16-bit input, the
16383 px limit as an error, text edges), plus unit tests for the coder, transforms,
prediction and header.

45bedb0962 Monitor profile auto follows each window's display; what is applied is visible (#569) (#591)
* Monitor profile: say which profile is in use and why; apply a late display reading (#569)

Color Settings › Monitor Profile used to fall back to sRGB without a
word when the display's profile was missing, unreadable, not RGB or
unusable as a destination, and dropped a macOS reading that took longer
than 2 s. `ColorState::monitor_status` now reports the profile actually
applied, its fingerprint, the source (auto / manual / fallback) and the
reason for a fallback. `edit.colorSettings` (`monitorStatus`),
Help › System Info and the Color Settings dialog show it, and a fallback
in auto posts a notice.

The macOS reader also names the display it read. On a dual-display Mac
it reports the menu-bar display ("Built-in Retina Display") while the
canvas is on the external monitor, which is the display-selection bug
in #569; following the window's display is the next step.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Monitor profile auto: each window uses the profile of the display it is on (#569)

The macOS reader now lists every display (id, name, frame, ICC profile
and its System Settings name) instead of asking for the "main screen",
which from a windowless helper is the menu-bar display. Each window
picks the display it overlaps most, as NSWindow.screen does, and its
canvas is shown in that display's profile: moving a window to another
display switches the profile without a restart, and two windows of one
document on different displays each keep their own. The GPU canvas
shares the document texture and keeps a display LUT per (document,
display); CPU textures are per (document, display).

Displays are read again when PhotoCraft comes back to the front (a
profile changed in System Settings or by a calibration tool), and when
a window is on an unknown display or one whose size changed (connected,
removed, rearranged), at most every 5 s. A failed re-read keeps the
previous reading. Help › System Info lists each display's profile.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Monitor profile auto: act on the r1 review; no periodic re-read (#569)

Following the owner's decision on echo round r1:

- No periodic discovery: a read costs about 0.2 s of CPU, and a profile
reassigned while PhotoCraft stays in front with no window moving
practically doesn't happen. It is picked up at the next return to the
front, or when Edit › Color Settings opens, which now reads at once.
- Every document window, not only the main one, asks for a reading when
it is on an unknown display or one whose size changed.
- The focus re-read is throttled to one per 30 s; a trigger inside that
  window is deferred, not dropped.
- Starting a reading schedules the frame that applies its result, so an
idle window doesn't wait for unrelated input.
- The osascript helper is stopped after 10 s (killed and reaped, both
pipes drained meanwhile), so a hung reading can't block later ones.
- The Color Settings dialog recomputes "Monitor profile in use" as it
draws, and the status says when an earlier reading is kept after a
  failed re-read (detection `retained`).

* Monitor profile auto: document windows count for focus and wake the main window (#569)

Echo round r2 on #591:

- Coming back to PhotoCraft through a document window (macOS reports
focus per window, so the main window stays unfocused) now counts as a
return to the front and reads the displays again, within the 30 s
  throttle.
- A document window that is on an unknown or resized display, or that
brings PhotoCraft back to the front, asks the main window for a frame:
the reading starts there, so it no longer waits for unrelated input.
One frame per trigger, no continuous repaints.

Brandon ThomasandClaude Opus 5.5 3c54849ba6 Type tool: caret/selection land on the glyph under the pointer; font size is live, one undo step, ~60x faster (#123, #124) (#142)
* Canvas: tool gestures start at the press origin, not where egui recognised the drag (#123)

A drag is only recognised once the pointer has moved past egui's click
distance; the Down event used the pointer position at that moment, so a
Type tool drag-selection's anchor landed a glyph or more away from where
the button went down. Adds a text-engine test that the caret geometry
(clusters, lines) sits on the rendered glyphs for tracking, horizontal
scale, mixed sizes and wrapped, centred paragraph text.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Type tool: PSD type edits on the layout it shows; size edits are live, one step per drag, sized as shown (#123, #124)

- Clicking into a PSD type layer whose pixels are still Photoshop's
re-renders it with our engine first (inside the edit session's history
step; Cancel restores Photoshop's pixels), so caret and selection sit on
what is shown. Hit-testing a type layer also accepts its shown pixels.
- type.edit / type.setStyle damage only the layer's old and new pixels, so
the canvas recomposites that area instead of the whole document.
- Scrubbing a size (or any) type field coalesces per drag: live preview
every frame, one history step per drag.
- Options bar and Properties show and edit font size and leading as the
layer appears (size x transform scale, like Photoshop), and the options
bar shows the size at the selection.
- examples/type_bench: 6000x4000, 50 type layers, size step went from
297 ms to 4.6 ms (CPU canvas), 489 ms to 10 ms with drop shadows.

Brandon ThomasandClaude Opus 5.5 8b0ceea374 Adjustment dialogs: GPU live preview through a clipped adjustment layer (#77) (#85)
* Adjustment dialogs: preview through a clipped adjustment layer on the GPU (#77)

While an Image › Adjustments dialog is open on a pixel layer, the canvas shows the
document with a temporary adjustment layer (the dialog's settings, the selection as
its mask) clipped to the target instead of re-running the command on a CPU proxy.
The canvas compositor draws it, so on the GPU canvas a change recomposites only the
target's area within the selection, and of that only what the view shows (the rest
catches up as the view moves); zoomed out on a large document it composites a copy
reduced to about screen resolution, built once per session. The base document and
region are built once per session; a change swaps the layer's adjustment in a
shallow copy. OK still runs the real command (one history step); Cancel drops it.

Kept on the CPU proxy where the layer composite can't match the command: non-pixel
or clipped targets, Blend If, visible untouched area, channel / Quick Mask targets,
CMYK/Lab/other modes, colour-making kinds in Grayscale, and documents the GPU
compositor doesn't cover. The navigator waits for settings to settle.

Tests: preview vs command within 1/255 (worst 0.37/255) for all 13 kinds at
8/16/32-bit, RGB and Gray, with/without selection; nothing changes outside the
region; dialog flow (cache, keys, damage, Cancel untouched, OK one step); GPU
parity of the preview and of the zoomed-out proxy.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* interactive_bench: per-change Image › Adjustments dialog preview rows (#77)

Times the old CPU proxy preview against the clipped-layer preview at full
resolution, at 100 % view and zoomed out, with and without a selection.

Brandon ThomasandClaude Opus 5.5 d8d648cb72 GPU canvas: Rgba16Float display texture for 16/32-bit documents (#46) (#84)
* engine: display LUT without the 32-bit preview for the GPU canvas shader; keep values above 1.0 in texture_buffer

ColorState::gpu_canvas_lut leaves View > 32-bit Preview Options out of the display LUT
(the canvas shader applies exposure/gamma before it, on unclipped float texels), and
ColorState::hdr_preview returns the active preview. CanvasDisplay::texture_buffer no
longer clamps linear values to 1.0 before sRGB-encoding them (the 8-bit path clamps
afterwards with the same result).

Refs #46

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* GPU canvas: Rgba16Float display texture for 16/32-bit documents (#46)

16- and 32-bit documents get an Rgba16Float canvas texture when the adapter can
sample, filter, render to and copy it (Rgba8Unorm stays for 8-bit documents, as the
fallback, and for high-bit documents over 100 MP, about 1.07 GB with mips), so smooth
gradients no longer band through 8 bits. Both the wgpu compositor path (encode pass
with 16F pipelines; no upper clamp) and the CPU band/rect upload path (f32 -> half
conversion, reused band buffer) write it. The 32-bit preview (exposure/gamma) moves
into the canvas shader, before the colour-management/proof LUT, so values above 1.0
are exposed into range instead of clipped. GpuCanvas::read_texels / texture_info for
tests and benchmarks; PHOTOCRAFT_CANVAS_F16=0/1 disables the float canvas / ignores
the budget. large_image_bench gains --depth 16|32.

Brandon ThomasandClaude Opus 5.5 d3b540234c Large images: adapter texture limits, banded compositing/export, proxy thumbnails, history byte budget (#71)
* Compose: render in place and in bands; area-reduced and proxy thumbnails

render_tiled wrote every tile into a Vec and then copied them into the output:
two full-size float copies (6.3 GB for a 14000² document). Tiles are now
written straight into the output band by band.

New streaming APIs so large documents never need a full-size float
composite: render_bands (sink per band of ~8 MP), render_reduced (banded
area average, bit-identical to the old flatten-then-average thumbnail) and
flatten_to_surface (Flatten Image, Merge Visible, Copy Merged and the other
flattened-surface users).

thumbnail() reduces a downsampled proxy (moved from ui-egui to
compose::proxy, now also scaling spot channels) for documents over 16 MP
when that is faithful (no layer effects or vector masks), so navigator,
channel and histogram thumbnails of a 196 MP document cost milliseconds.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* GPU canvas: request the adapter's real limits; banded CPU fallback; navigator thumbnail

egui-wgpu asks for an 8192 px texture limit, so the wgpu compositor rejected
every document wider or taller than 8192 px and each refresh fell back to a
full CPU flatten. The desktop and web apps now request the adapter's own
max_texture_dimension_2d and max_buffer_size (gpu_canvas::use_adapter_limits);
the benches use the same limits.

The CPU fallback (documents beyond the GPU limit, or features it lacks) is
GpuCanvas::refresh: it renders and uploads the composite band by band
instead of a full float composite plus a full RGBA8 copy. The CPU canvas
texture is reduced in bands too, and the Navigator on the GPU canvas uses a
cached thumbnail instead of a full-resolution CPU composite per revision.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* IO: banded export and import; no full-size copies in encoders; larger decode limits

- Flat export renders the composite in bands and quantises each band; alpha
is dropped in place when every pixel is opaque. The single-layer native
path copies surface rows a band at a time (no f32 read_region and no
per-pixel Vec). Buffers come from try_reserve: Err, not an abort.
- PSD export encodes the merged image band by band into its planes (no
flatten, no second plane copy); near-opaque documents are re-encoded
without the white matte so the output is unchanged. Layer interleaved
bytes are freed before their planes are compressed.
- Flat import converts in ~32 MB bands (and not at all when already RGBA);
the PSD merged-image un-matte works per tile row.
- Encoders borrow the image when no conversion is needed (Image::converted)
instead of cloning it; PNG only copies 16-bit data for the byte swap.
- Decode limits: 2^30 pixels and 8 GiB on 64-bit targets (a 20000² JPEG
  was refused at 2^28).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Filters: write tile results in memory-bounded groups

apply_tiled collected every tile's float result before writing any (3.1 GB
for a 14000² layer). Results are now produced and written in groups of about
256 MB (at least one tile per core).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* History: bound pixel memory by Preferences > Performance > Memory Usage

History::max_bytes caps the current document's tiles plus the tiles only
history holds (layers, masks, alpha channels); History::trim drops the
oldest states beyond it after every recorded step and when preferences
change, always keeping the last step undoable. The engine sets it from
memory_usage_mb, which was unused.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Large-image benchmark (14k / 20k): open, refresh, thumbnails, filter, stroke, saves

One operation per run on a cached synthetic photo, with the GPU device created
the way the app creates it, so /usr/bin/time -l reports that operation's peak
memory. Documented in docs/development.md.

* Adjustments: full parameter sets for every kind, Hue/Sat ranges, CMYK/Lab tone channels

- doc: Hue/Saturation gains six colour ranges (HueRange), Gradient Map a dither flag,
Levels/Curves a ToneSpace (RGB, CMYK inks + black, Lab) for mode-native channels.
- engine: new adjust_params module (from_params over a base / to_params) used by
  image.adjustments.*, layer.newAdjustmentLayer.* and layer.setAdjustment. Curves,
Color Balance, Channel Mixer, Black & White, Gradient Map and Photo Filter now honour
their params; bad params are BadParams errors; setAdjustment merges (empty = reset).
- compose/gpu: hue-range tables, CMYK/Lab tone channels (CPU; GPU falls back), dithered
Gradient Map, Black & White from grey/secondary/primary parts; GPU parity extended.
- io: hue2 ranges, grdm dither, CMYK/Lab Levels/Curves records round-trip.
- destructive adjustments use the document's tone transfer.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* Adjustments UI: one editor per kind for Properties and Image › Adjustments dialogs

- adjust_editors: Brightness/Contrast (legacy), Levels and Curves (per channel in RGB, Gray,
CMYK and Lab, histogram behind), Exposure, Vibrance, Hue/Saturation (master + six ranges with
draggable range sliders, colorize, before/after spectrum), Color Balance (tones, preserve
luminosity), Black & White (six weights, tint colour), Photo Filter (presets or colour,
density), Channel Mixer (outputs, constant, monochrome, total), Posterize, Threshold
(histogram), Gradient Map (stops, presets, reverse, dither). Replaces the M7 placeholder.
- Properties previews live (GPU) while a control moves and commits one setAdjustment per gesture.
- adjust_dialog: Image › Adjustments opens the same editor modally; the canvas previews the
real command on the proxy, Preview checkbox, OK = one history step, Cancel leaves the doc.
- Curves (#43): hit-test at the press origin, Delete/Backspace removes the selected point when
the graph has focus, Cmd/Ctrl-click removes, dragging off removes (and back on restores),
arrows nudge; endpoints and the last two points stay; pressing the gradient bars does nothing.
- tone: histograms per channel space, of the image below a layer or of the target layer alone.
- kittests: every adjustment layer kind edited through the Properties panel with real input at
8/16/32-bit RGB, Gray, CMYK and Lab (#12); Curves point interactions; dialog preview/OK/Cancel.

#60's round-trip tests predate #68's doc-model additions (tone space and black channel,
Hue/Saturation ranges, Gradient Map dither); fill them with their defaults.

Import/export warnings from photocraft-io are no longer thrown away: they show
in the status bar and in a dismissable notice (native and web), and the
control protocol returns them from app.open/app.save/file.open/file.save/
file.saveAs/file.saveACopy. .pcraft is in the Open and Save filters, and
File › Save writes .pcraft documents in place.

Register an NSAppleEventManager handler through the small fmv-macos-events
crate (MIT OR Apache-2.0, 168 lines, audited, pinned =0.1.0; it keeps the
Objective-C unsafe out of our forbid(unsafe_code) workspace) before the event
