Each drag tick changed the edited photo's settings, so the filmstrip asked
for a new thumbnail render every frame. For an unedited raw shown with its
embedded preview, the thumbnail-level source had never been decoded, so each
of those renders decoded the whole raw (a 64 MP ARW: over a second), several
side by side, and the loupe's drafts queued behind them.
- The edited photo's thumbnail is not re-rendered during a slider drag while
it has one; it follows once the drag ends.
- A thumbnail of a photo whose preview-level source is decoded (the one in
the loupe) is cut from that source (SourceRef::Fit) instead of decoding the
file again; not when the photo has a denoised picture.

On merge: the HDR histogram is applied in develop_reporting (#712 split develop), is skipped for
draft renders (a second render per drag tick), and HdrBins::bin clamps a hand-built split so it
can't underflow (test hdr_bins_with_any_split_stay_in_range).
An HDR edit's preview shows its SDR rendition, so its histogram said nothing
about the highlights above SDR white. Now it shows the HDR rendition:
`pipeline::hdr_histogram` renders the edit small (384 px, float HDR, same
framing) and bins it with SDR on the left half and the HDR range on the right
(`Histogram::of_hdr`, `HdrBins`), on a fixed scale of Hdr::MAX_EV_LIMIT (5)
stops above SDR white so it doesn't rescale when the headroom limit changes.
The engine's `develop()` (CPU and GPU renders) and the web worker swap it in
for HDR edits; high-bit-depth, windowed and proofed requests keep the image's
histogram, and a display profile's histogram doesn't replace it. Web workers
carry the HDR bins across their wire (`Histogram::to_words` / `from_words`).
The panel draws it in Lightroom's layout: a solid line at SDR white, dashed
lines between the stops, the headroom limit as an orange line with the range
past it dimmed, a bar under the plot (white; one band per stop in Visualize
HDR range's colours while that is on), SDR / HDR labels and an info tooltip.
Follow-up to #646, ported from #466.

Raws without matrices in the file (ARW, NEF, RW2, RAF, CR2, CR3, PEF, SRW,
ORF) were all edited on the relative white-balance scale (6500 K / 0 = as
shot), even when lightcraft_raw::spectral has measured matrices for the
camera. Those 52 bodies (ILCE-7M3, ILCE-7M4, D850, EOS 5D Mark III...) now
edit in Kelvin like a DNG and like Lightroom.
Design:
- One decision on both sides: spectral::find_camera("Make Model") backs
catalog::relative_wb_camera (Photo::relative_wb); files::WbScaleOf decides
the same from the decoded file. A corpus test asserts they agree.
Photo::fitted_look keeps the old predicate for smart previews.
- The matrices only convert: As Shot is the file's multipliers read through
the model's ColorMatrix1/2 (spectral::as_shot_white_through). The look
(JPEG fit / profile / spectral fallback) is unchanged, and the slider
adapts from that white with Bradford. The camera-space rebalance stays
reserved for files with their own matrices.
- Presets resolve to their Kelvin values (WbMode::preset, sources cited).
- The Color panel shows the white balance in effect (effective_wb).
- XMP: crs::Target::for_file takes the camera; matrix cameras read
crs:Temperature as Kelvin (marked "scale": "kelvin"), others keep the
#510 as-shot shift.
Migration (no look changes):
- WhiteBalance.scale: WbScale { Legacy (absent in JSON), Kelvin }. A
white balance without a scale keeps its old meaning. On a spectral-Kelvin
raw (SourceInfo.legacy_relative_wb) the pipeline composes the old
adaptation (6500 -> value) with the new one (as shot -> ...) in Bradford
cone space (local::legacy_white). Von Kries scalings compose exactly, so
the matrix matches to f32 and the pixels are identical
(pipeline legacy_relative_white_balance_renders_as_before_on_a_kelvin_raw,
media old_relative_white_balance_on_a_kelvin_camera_keeps_its_look...).
- Every white-balance writer (develop.set/adjust/quickAdjust/wb/wbPick/
reset) first runs local::normalize_wb: a legacy value becomes the Custom
Kelvin value with the same look and is marked Kelvin. Partials without a
scale (old presets, develop.merge) stay legacy.
- Catalog format 7: Op::SetAsShotWb replaces the 6500/0 as-shot recorded
by older imports when the file is next decoded or reloaded (system op,
not an undo step). Format-version test updated.
- The web wire carries legacy_relative_wb.
Docs: parity (LR-EDIT-COLOR-TEMP), camera-preview-colour, xmp-interop,
lightroom-catalog-import, control-protocol, mcp, whats-new.
Previews were always sRGB, which wide-gamut monitors show oversaturated.
Settings > Display > Choose Profile... (and the UI command
app.displayProfile) now shows photos through the monitor's ICC profile,
matrix/TRC or LUT-based.
- codecs: DisplayProfile (moxcms): the display's primaries (colorant tags,
or measured through the A2B tables of a LUT-only profile), the proxy ->
device correction (per-channel curve tables for matrix/TRC profiles, a
CMS transform for LUT profiles) and sRGB <-> display transforms.
- pipeline: DisplaySpace / RenderRequest::display: the per-pixel stage
renders into the display's primaries and gamut maps into its gamut
(CPU and GPU: only to_out / out_luma change). Soft proofing's display
gamut warning uses the display's gamut.
- engine: RenderJob::with_display; display::present converts sRGB
results (thumbnails, cached previews, embedded JPEGs). Histograms and
the preview caches stay sRGB; exports are unchanged.
- ui: the loupe, Before, Compare, hover and second window render for the
display; everything else is converted on the render workers. Settings >
Display tab, ui.json setting, file picker opening in the system's ICC
folder.
Tests: profile parsing and transforms (sRGB, P3, gamma 2.2, a synthetic
LUT-only profile, corrupted files), display renders equal 8-bit renders
into the matching output space, sampled histograms, and a headless UI test
of the whole flow. docs/display-profiles.md describes the design.

a_window_job_crosses_the_wire_and_renders_the_same_window compared the worker's
CPU render with the engine job's render bit for bit. On a machine with a GPU the
engine job renders there, so the test failed by 1 LSB (on main too); without a
GPU (CI) both run on the CPU. It now checks both sizes and a maximum channel
difference of 3, the bound docs/gpu-pipeline.md documents.

WireJob carries the request's window (an old job without one has none), and the
browser build asks for window renders like the desktop; windows there are capped
at 3072 px a side to respect wasm memory.

A zoomed view needs the pixels it shows at the zoom scale, not a whole-frame
texture stretched over them. RenderRequest gains an optional PixelWindow of the
virtual full output that max_w x max_h describes; only the window is
materialized. It is Frame:🪟 the crop rectangle narrows to the window
(flips as drawn), so sampling, masks, spots, red eye and the lens warp need no
change. The post-crop vignette keeps the whole frame's geometry (Frame::view)
and dehaze uses the whole frame's airlight (estimated on a 384 px render), so a
window matches the same pixels of the full render. The GPU renderer declines
windowed requests (CPU for now).

The main thread's Workers tracked no rendered-thumbnail cache until the
first render request carried one. If Clear Preview Cache ran before that
(e.g. starting on an empty filtered view), the per-frame observation in
finished() had nothing to compare with, and the first request only
recorded the already-cleared generation as its baseline. The persisted
ThumbIndex was never invalidated, so once the filter was removed the
request touched the old entry and the worker read the pre-clear JPEG
back from browser storage. Replacing the cache (another library) before
the first request had the same gap.
Workers::start now takes the session's cache and records it, with its
current generation, as the baseline the persisted index belongs to. A
normal start with no clear observes the same cache and generation and
keeps the index. The comparison moves into wire::CacheWatch so it is
tested natively (cargo test --workspace) next to ThumbIndex.

Skip unchanged thumbnail jobs and reuse bounded settings hashes (both maps
capped at 1024 entries). Reject stale render results and cache writes after
edits, library changes and preview clears: render requests carry a request
id and cache generation, PreviewCache writes and reads hold the generation
lock that clear() takes, and library.clearPreviews also drops cached
sources. The web worker index follows the same generation rule.
The decoder guards, Windows path fixes and test fixture changes that were
bundled in a327b98 are separate commits; the benchmark follows this one.

Smart previews store the decoded source with the fitted colour matrix
baked in, but the file-local tone curve lives in the decoder's
SourceInfo, which a proxy did not keep: an offline ARW rendered and
exported with the generic filmic curve instead (darker, a different
look). The proxy header now carries the curve (validated on load,
ignored when invalid), DecodedSource::info_or merges it into the header
facts, and is_valid reads the longer header.

Soft proofing (S in the loupe; S in grids stays Expand/Collapse Stack):
- pipeline Proof {space, destWarning, displayWarning}: gamut-map into the
proof space, show it in the output space; red/blue gamut warnings
(neutral clipping excluded). CPU only; the GPU path declines proofs.
- RenderJob::with_proof; paper-white surround and Proof Preview label;
Soft Proofing strip under the histogram (profile, warnings, Create
Proof Copy = a named virtual copy). view.softProof for control/MCP.
- photo.virtualCopy takes an optional name.
Mask components: MaskComponent.name; mask.component {component, action:
invert|duplicate|delete|rename|op}; right-click / … menu per component,
double-click rename, Intersect button.

- Smart previews (smart.rs): a ~1 MB proxy per photo in the library's "Smart Previews" folder
(the decoded preview-size source, scaled, sRGB-encoded JPEG behind a one-line header). When
a photo's original is missing (an unplugged drive), its source loads from the proxy: the
photo renders, edits and exports at proxy size. library.smartPreviews {discard?},
photo.smartPreview status; File ▸ Previews ▸ Build / Discard Smart Previews; Info shows
"Original offline · editing the smart preview".
- Photo ▸ Duplicate (photo.duplicate): a real "-copy" file with the same settings, metadata,
rating, flag, label and albums; one undo step.

RenderRequest gains a sample format (OutputDepth: U8 for previews, U16, F32Linear); deep renders
run the per-pixel stage with the exact sRGB curve and return Rendered::deep alongside the 8-bit
image (GPU stays 8-bit: deep exports render on the CPU). Export encodes deep renders: 16-bit PNG and
TIFF, 32-bit float linear TIFF with a linear ICC profile we generate, 10-bit AVIF (YCbCr planes into
ravif). Output sharpening and watermarks work on deep images. ExportOptions.bitDepth with per-format
defaults (TIFF 16-bit, others 8-bit), export dialog bit depth choice (remembered with the last
export), MCP export schema. Tests: a smooth gradient has 1024 levels in a 16-bit TIFF vs 13 in
8-bit, float TIFF decodes to the same light as 16-bit, per-format depth rules, AVIF 10-bit.

The selected mask's evaluated alpha is drawn by the renderer as Overlay::Mask (CPU and GPU share the
alpha the render used; hidden masks are evaluated on demand), kept out of the view-preview cache.
Pins for radial/linear/brush components select their mask on click and move the component on drag;
view.maskPins hides them. CPU/GPU equivalence and headless keyboard/pointer tests.

RenderRequest gains an output space (default sRGB; previews stay sRGB). The per-pixel stage converts
scene-linear Rec.2020 to the target primaries, gamut-maps into the target gamut and encodes with the
target curve, on CPU and GPU (WGSL finish kernel reads the matrix, luma weights and curve from its
parameter block). sRGB output is byte-identical to before on the CPU. Export embeds our own
generated ICC profile for the space; AVIF stays sRGB. ExportOptions.colorSpace, export dialog and
MCP export schema. Tests: P3 colour survives a P3 export (decoded through the embedded profile),
every space/format round-trips its profile, GPU equivalence per space.

Up to 8 OkLCh samples (pointColor.pick samples the colour after the mixer on a proxy render);
per sample hue/saturation/luminance shift, variance (compress/expand the spread around the
sample) and an overall + per-axis range with soft edges, applied after the colour mixer in
ColorOps and its WGSL twin (equivalence case). Indexed control specs
(pointColor.<i>.hueShift …) so develop.set/controls/MCP address each sample. Visualize range
is a render overlay (RenderRequest::overlay) drawn after either renderer: the sample's own
edit is left out and colours outside the range turn grey. Point Color flyout in the Color
section with swatches, eyedropper, sliders, visualize and delete.

Renders run in dedicated module Web Workers, each a second instance of the app's wasm module
(index.html compiles it once and posts the WebAssembly.Module to worker.js). A job crosses as
JSON (WireJob: source, settings, request); the worker reads originals and cached thumbnails from
browser storage itself, keeps decoded sources and per-view stage caches, and transfers RGBA back.
Jobs follow the worker that decoded the photo; the loupe waits for it. No wasm threads or
SharedArrayBuffer needed; falls back to inline rendering if no worker starts (?workers=0).
Thumbnail disk cache on the web: thumbs/<key>.jpg in OPFS/IndexedDB with an index on the main
thread, pruned to the desktop budget (2 GB → 80 %, LRU).
ui-egui: RenderOffload hook in the Renderer (queue/priorities/dedup stay in the UI).
engine: RenderJob.origin + MediaCache::origin_ref; preview: encode_jpeg/decode_jpeg public.
xtask web: copies worker.js; --serve sends COOP/COEP/CORP (documented in docs/web.md).
Headless Chrome, cold load + grid scroll, 24 demo photos: main-thread busy 12.4 s → 0.7–1.1 s,
long tasks 23 (max 1.1 s) → 0; grid filled in 6.3–8.4 s vs 13–16 s; slider job 4 ms.
