RenderRequest gains a sample format (OutputDepth: U8 for previews, U16, F32Linear); deep renders
run the per-pixel stage with the exact sRGB curve and return Rendered::deep alongside the 8-bit
image (GPU stays 8-bit: deep exports render on the CPU). Export encodes deep renders: 16-bit PNG and
TIFF, 32-bit float linear TIFF with a linear ICC profile we generate, 10-bit AVIF (YCbCr planes into
ravif). Output sharpening and watermarks work on deep images. ExportOptions.bitDepth with per-format
defaults (TIFF 16-bit, others 8-bit), export dialog bit depth choice (remembered with the last
export), MCP export schema. Tests: a smooth gradient has 1024 levels in a 16-bit TIFF vs 13 in
8-bit, float TIFF decodes to the same light as 16-bit, per-format depth rules, AVIF 10-bit.

Settings (Cmd+, / app menu on macOS, Edit elsewhere) with General, Import,
Performance and Interface tabs. App settings (startup view, delete
confirmation, GPU, preview size, filmstrip/grid badges, last library) live in
UiState.settings (ui.json); library settings (raw / non-raw / per-camera
import presets, XMP, thumbnail cache size) go through library.preferences into
prefs.json. Import applies the matching default preset; the photo remembers it
as its import look (unedited; Reset returns to it). Open Library… switches
libraries at runtime.
View modes: F full-screen preview (photo on black, arrows step, I cycles the
info overlay, Esc exits), Cmd+Shift+F window full screen, Cmd+I cycles the
loupe info overlay (off / file + date / exposure), Navigator mini map while
zoomed (click/drag pans).

RenderRequest gains an output space (default sRGB; previews stay sRGB). The per-pixel stage converts
scene-linear Rec.2020 to the target primaries, gamut-maps into the target gamut and encodes with the
target curve, on CPU and GPU (WGSL finish kernel reads the matrix, luma weights and curve from its
parameter block). sRGB output is byte-identical to before on the CPU. Export embeds our own
generated ICC profile for the space; AVIF stays sRGB. ExportOptions.colorSpace, export dialog and
MCP export schema. Tests: P3 colour survives a P3 export (decoded through the embedded profile),
every space/format round-trips its profile, GPU equivalence per space.

- memory::budget (default min(25% RAM, 1.5 GiB); LIGHTCRAFT_MEMORY_MB, app.memoryBudget):
half for engine caches (sources + rendered previews, LRU across them via a global
use tick; the photo on screen stays), a quarter for decodes in flight (WorkGate:
thumbnails, prefetch and import probes wait; loupe/export loads never wait), an
eighth for the GPU free pool.
- GPU: best-fit buffer reuse (<= 25% slack), buffers released outside a render are
pooled at once (no stranded retired lists), pool trimmed after 3 s idle.
- Decodes drop file bytes and raw samples early, colour/crop/orient in place.
- macOS: apps install malloc_zone_pressure_relief as the release hook (after each
decode, import and idle trim): freed large blocks no longer stay resident.
14 raws + loupe + 12 steps (M4 Pro): peak RSS 1.9-2.3 GB -> 0.83-0.99 GB, footprint
2.5-2.6 GB -> 0.91-0.96 GB, heap peak 930 -> 656 MB; stepping median ~13 ms.

Fix-ups: diagnostic overlays never populate the view-preview cache; Photo Merge's RenderRequest gets
the new overlay field.

Photo Merge's Create Stack option now puts the merged DNG on top of a
collapsed stack of its sources (Catalog::stack_with_ops), so the grid
shows the result; test in tests_merge (and no stack without the option).
Photo Merge dialogs live in a Photo > Photo Merge submenu.

Also: GPU retired-buffer list leaks its buffers at thread exit instead of
dropping them (wgpu's thread-locals may already be gone; the drop aborted
the test process intermittently), and headless UI tests wait up to 120 s
for renders (they timed out on a loaded machine).

Decoders take a Mode: Header reads everything but the samples (DNG, CR2, ARW,
RAF, RW2; PEF when it has crop tags). NEF/ORF (and PEF without crop tags)
derive geometry/CFA from the samples and still unpack them. decode() stays
bit-exact (debug-hash of every corpus/raw decode identical before/after); the
corpus test asserts probe_info == decode().info() for all 37 files.
Import of 14 corpus raws: 3.4 s -> 1.4-2.0 s; peak RSS through import
1.41-1.49 GB -> 1.12-1.22 GB.

Pet eyes are found by brightness (the tapetum glows in any colour) and the disc is replaced by
a dark neutral pupil (Darken scales it); redeye.catchlight {index, on, offset} adds a soft
white catchlight at an offset from the pupil centre in pupil radii. Red Eye panel: Red Eye /
Pet Eye mode for new corrections and an Add Catchlight checkbox. CPU/GPU twins updated
together (equivalence covers both modes and the catchlight).

pipeline::redeye: inside the user's ellipse the pupil is found on the source image (a fixed
grid in normalized coordinates, so previews and exports agree): weighted centroid and area of
red-dominant pixels (or, for pet eyes, of the brightest ones). Pupil Size scales the detected
disc; rendering in scene-linear light after white balance neutralizes the red where it is red
(iris and catchlights stay) and darkens it. CPU (lin stage) and GPU kernel redeye_k with an
equivalence test (both the GPU and the CPU scene-linear paths). Indexed controls
redEye.<i>.pupilSize/darken, redeye.add/delete commands, the Red Eye panel (selected eye's
sliders, delete) and the loupe tool (drag an ellipse, click to select).

- engine: `merge.hdr`, `merge.panorama`, `merge.hdrPanorama` (bracket size from
EXIF); MergeJob (Send) with progress/cancel, preview renders through the develop
pipeline (deghost overlay, auto-crop frame); finish writes <name>-HDR/-Pano.dng
next to the first source, imports, selects, applies Auto Settings / auto crop
- ui: Photo Merge dialog (HDR / Panorama / HDR Panorama) with live preview on a
worker thread, background final merge with progress toast; context menu and
Ctrl+H / Ctrl+M (Ctrl now means the physical Control key on macOS)
- cli: `merge hdr|panorama|hdr-panorama`, `synth-merge` for synthetic inputs
- merge::synth: procedural brackets (DNG) and panorama views; docs/merge.md

Resolved: album.create (main's one-liner + smart: None), menus (panels in
the Window menu, main's dialog.newFolder ⇧⌘N, app.showInFinder and
app.exportPrevious placed in the menu layout), shortcuts (native-menu skip
+ main's aliases and UI-over-engine rule; Shift+X/Shift+U aliases go
through the culling path; my Shift+P/X/U flag-and-advance dropped in
favour of the aliases). X and Delete stay egui-handled (contextual keys).

develop.targeted {target: curve|hue|sat|lum, x, y, delta, channel?}: samples the photo at the
point on a proxy render with the target stage and everything after it neutralized, then
nudges the parametric curve region (by the sampled tone and the splits), moves/adds a point
on the master/RGB point curve, or adjusts the colour-mixer (or B&W mix) bands weighted by
their share of the sampled OkLCh hue. UI: target buttons in the curve editor and the colour
mixer; a vertical drag on the loupe sends one step per unit inside one interaction (one
undo step). New original vector icon (Target) in icons.rs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Up to 8 OkLCh samples (pointColor.pick samples the colour after the mixer on a proxy render);
per sample hue/saturation/luminance shift, variance (compress/expand the spread around the
sample) and an overall + per-axis range with soft edges, applied after the colour mixer in
ColorOps and its WGSL twin (equivalence case). Indexed control specs
(pointColor.<i>.hueShift …) so develop.set/controls/MCP address each sample. Visualize range
is a render overlay (RenderRequest::overlay) drawn after either renderer: the sample's own
edit is left out and colours outside the range turn grey. Point Color flyout in the Color
section with swatches, eyedropper, sliders, visualize and delete.

"Delete" parsed as egui's forward-Delete key, so the Mac ⌫ key (Backspace) didn't delete. In the
Masking panel ⌫ now deletes the active mask; while retouching it does nothing. ⇧⌘N no longer
fires album.create (which needs a name).

curve.refineSaturation (0..100, default 100 = the curve's own saturation): after the tone
curves, the chroma around luma is rescaled so saturation moves from the curve's towards the
pre-curve value, keeping the curve's tone. CPU (finish::refine_saturation) and GPU twin,
equivalence case, slider under the curve editor, crs:CurveRefineSaturation import.

Compare view (Shift+C): select | candidate side by side with synced zoom and
pan; arrows move the candidate, rating/flag/label keys act on the active
(candidate) photo, swap / make-select. Survey view (N): the selection tiled,
keys act on the active photo, hover x removes from the survey. Auto Advance
setting (Photo menu, bottom bar toggle) and Shift+P/X/U flag-and-advance.
Escape returns to Detail. Headless keyboard test.
Fix: render-job keys include the photo id, so a view slot never shows one
photo's result as current for another with identical settings/size.

White-preserving primaries matrix (OkLCh hue rotation / chroma scale of each Rec.2020
primary) plus a luminance-preserving green/magenta shadows tint, applied in scene-linear
light before the tone map. CPU (colorops::calibrate) and GPU (finish.wgsl) with an
equivalence case; seven control specs (calibration.*), a settings group, crs: import
(ShadowTint, Red/Green/BlueHue/Saturation) and a Calibration section at the bottom of the
Edit panel.

Photo.copy_of / copy_name. photo.virtualCopy (Cmd+') clones the photo with
independent settings and history, names it "Copy N" (numbered per master),
adds it to the original's albums and stacks it (expanded) right after the
original; one undo step for several copies (Session::merge_undo). Copies
never write XMP sidecars. "Copy N" badge in the grid, Info panel line,
copy:yes search token. Also: Info panel stars laid out in a row.

together and collapse to the top. Commands stack.* (Cmd+G, Cmd+Shift+G, S,
Shift+S, expand/collapse all, stack.auto with preview); grid/filmstrip
count badges (click to toggle), context menu, Auto-Stack dialog.

- engine: QuickJob — what to show the moment a photo opens: the loupe's last render for the
current settings (kept by Session::loupe_job under a size-independent "view" key in the
preview cache, memory + disk with a library; the disk JPEG is written off the render
thread via PreviewCache::put_deferred), else the embedded camera JPEG of a raw that still
has its import look (import::has_import_look), else a thumbnail-level render.
- Grid / filmstrip: an unedited raw without a thumbnail shows its cached thumbnail, else its
embedded preview (Slot::ThumbQuick) at once; the real rendered thumbnail follows at
background priority (same cache keys, so it still ends up matching the develop render;
edited photos render directly).
- Loupe (detail, compare, filmstrip selection): Slot::Preview holds the stand-in until
Slot::Main has the photo; the full render then replaces it in place (no blank frame).
- files::embedded_preview_srgb + PreviewLoader hook (desktop/CLI/MCP and web).
- ui.inspect → loupe {photo, source: render|cached|embedded|small|thumb|none, pending}.
Real app (24 MP raws, loaded machine): first image 15–90 ms (thumbnail, then embedded
preview), full render 0.2–0.5 s (was 1.0–2.4 s with nothing shown before it).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- lightcraft-raw: RawImage::develop_binned(k) — k×k superpixel binning of the CFA
(Bayer k even, X-Trans k multiple of 3), black/white normalised row by row, default
crop only, clipping preserved for highlight reconstruction. 2560 px previews of a
24 MP raw bin 2×, thumbnails 4–8×; exports / 1:1 still demosaic (AHD) at full size.
- highlight::reconstruct and its pyramid fill are rayon-parallel (bit-exact).
- X-Trans directional demosaic: precomputed per-phase neighbour offsets and no
reflection in the interior, no per-pixel allocation (bit-exact, tested against the
reference formulation): 2.9 s → 0.75 s CPU at 24 MP.
- files::load_bytes runs on a rayon worker so its short parallel loops don't each
wait for the pool to wake (dominant cost on a loaded machine); LIGHTCRAFT_PROFILE
prints per-stage source timings; files::bin_factor picks the block size.
- render_bench ONLY=source: per-file decode / normalise / demosaic / binning / load.
- Fix: u64 overflow on hostile IFD sizes in DNG/ARW/NEF raw-IFD selection (proptest).
load_bytes(2560) CPU time, ARW a7 III 24 MP: 2347 → 240 ms; X-T20: 3120 → 1220 ms.

Renders run in dedicated module Web Workers, each a second instance of the app's wasm module
(index.html compiles it once and posts the WebAssembly.Module to worker.js). A job crosses as
JSON (WireJob: source, settings, request); the worker reads originals and cached thumbnails from
browser storage itself, keeps decoded sources and per-view stage caches, and transfers RGBA back.
Jobs follow the worker that decoded the photo; the loupe waits for it. No wasm threads or
SharedArrayBuffer needed; falls back to inline rendering if no worker starts (?workers=0).
Thumbnail disk cache on the web: thumbs/<key>.jpg in OPFS/IndexedDB with an index on the main
thread, pruned to the desktop budget (2 GB → 80 %, LRU).
ui-egui: RenderOffload hook in the Renderer (queue/priorities/dedup stay in the UI).
engine: RenderJob.origin + MediaCache::origin_ref; preview: encode_jpeg/decode_jpeg public.
xtask web: copies worker.js; --serve sends COOP/COEP/CORP (documented in docs/web.md).
Headless Chrome, cold load + grid scroll, 24 demo photos: main-thread busy 12.4 s → 0.7–1.1 s,
long tasks 23 (max 1.1 s) → 0; grid filled in 6.3–8.4 s vs 13–16 s; slider job 4 ms.

`media::develop` renders on the GPU when available (views, render_now, exports;
thumbnails stay on the CPU) and falls back to the CPU otherwise. `app.gpu
{enabled?}` toggles it at runtime, `LIGHTCRAFT_GPU=0` disables it for the process,
`ui.inspect` reports the adapter under perf.gpu.
Performance: dropped device buffers are recycled once their thread has submitted
(fresh 100-300 MB allocations per pass cost as much as the passes), Gaussian
passes ping-pong between two buffers and read all channels of a pixel at once,
and long box radii slide over longer chunks. LIGHTCRAFT_PROFILE prints real GPU
stage timings. render_bench prints CPU and GPU columns and the CPU/GPU difference.
24 MP ARW, loaded machine, min of 7: cold loupe 415 -> 32 ms, exposure drag
22-42 -> 3.9 ms, NR drag (1920) 301+ -> 18 ms, export render 1037+ -> 291 ms;
max 1 LSB difference. docs/gpu-pipeline.md describes the implementation.

The catalog Store on the web is an in-memory mirror (apps/lightcraft-web/src/files.rs) loaded
from browser storage at start-up and flushed in the background in modification order (so a
snapshot always lands before the log reset that follows it). Storage is OPFS when writable from
the main thread (createWritable), else IndexedDB (?store=idb forces it); ?reset clears it.
Imported originals are stored as originals/<content hash> and referenced as
web/<hash>/<name>; the main thread keeps a bounded memory cache and loads misses (and the
active photo) asynchronously. view.json and ui.json are saved every second when changed.
Engine: Session::open_library_in(LibraryStores) opens a library from any Store (presets, view
and prefs go through it too); Session::save_view; Copy imports into a non-disk library add.
JS automation API: lightcraft.command(id, paramsJson) (+ web.stats).

Integrated with M4 optics/Upright: render_impl resolves Upright and uses frame_for (lens + auto CA)
on the cached source; defringe runs in the cached linear stage and optics settings are part of its key.
Stage-cache equivalence test extended with optics/geometry steps.

The guided base, clarity band, texture band and dark channel (and the paired blurs inside the
guided filter) are independent; each alone scales poorly (subsampled grids, short rows), so they now
run under raster::par_join. Same arithmetic, identical pixels. render_bench gains a per-feature
breakdown of the per-pixel stage (ONLY=finish).
