crates/engine/src/media.rs, crates/engine/src/smart.rs: DecodedSource keeps both new fields, from_proxy (#1809) and reduced (#2263); a smart preview loads with from_proxy true, reduced false.
crates/engine/src/cmd/previews.rs: original_only refuses both proxy-loaded and reduced sources.
Reduced decoding is now opt-in: `files::load_vec_reduced` and the session's `reduced_loader` are used by grid
thumbnail jobs only; `load_bytes` / `load_vec` / `load_vec_pair` always decode the full image. A source developed
from a copy is marked (`DecodedSource::reduced`), so an export at a thumbnail's size reads the file again instead
of the cached thumbnail source, and Build Smart Previews never rebuilds a stale proxy from one.

A proxy whose stored pixels are an older encoding is stale for every
photo, not only the ones that take the per-file camera look, so DNG and
JPEG proxies migrate to the current encoding like the raws do. And a
source decoded from a smart preview now knows it came from the cache:
Build Smart Previews refuses it as the original, so an offline refresh
can no longer rebuild a stale proxy from itself.
A proxy stored the pixels and the camera tone curve only. An edit that
reads the file's own facts — a Kelvin white balance through the camera
colour model, Camera local tone mapping's gain table map, an AI mask's
semantic matte — rendered differently once the original went offline,
because the catalog's header facts cannot carry them.
The facts now ride in a tail after the JPEG (a length-prefixed JSON blob,
then one byte plane per matte), counted from the file's end so a header
rewritten in place keeps pointing at it; is_valid requires the JPEG to
end right before the tail. ENCODE_VERSION becomes 3, so proxies an older
build wrote are rebuilt when their original is readable (offline ones
keep their older look, as before). smart::encode now takes the source's
SourceInfo and decode returns the restored one.
Tests:
- tests_import::smart_previews_keep_the_decoder_facts_offline_edits_need:
a proxy's own pixels and facts render bit-identically offline for a
Kelvin white balance (6144/6144 pixels differ before), a stored sky
matte, and a gain table map
- smart::tests::facts_and_mattes_travel_with_the_proxy: the facts and
mattes round-trip; a proxy cut inside its tail is invalid; an old
proxy, and one whose header lies about the tail, read as no facts
The proxy's largest visible error against the original was the JPEG encoder's
quantised 8x8 DCT DC - each block's own mean, luma and chroma - which shows as
block steps across the frame and a small constant colour shift, and grows with
saturation. Quality 92 -> 97 shrinks those quantisers to about a third (block
-mean dE76 0.138 vs 0.202 on the fidelity test's smooth scene), at about twice
the file size; what remains is the 8-bit sRGB quantisation both encoders share,
which only a lossless proxy format can close.
The header gains an `enc` field (encode version 2) and the folder's look marker
becomes "<look> <enc>": a proxy or marker from before the encode version is
rebuilt/rescanned once, so existing libraries pick the new quality up without
any command. Old files still decode bit-identically (the scale mapping is
untouched, decode ignores `enc`), and a new proxy read by an older build is
left alone by its staleness check.
The fidelity test pins the gain with a frozen copy of the old encoder and a
block-mean dE76 metric (per-pixel dE is dominated by the shared 8-bit floor);
the 0.8 bound is the geometric midpoint between the no-op ratio 1.000 and the
0.632 floor cap the 8-bit quantisation sets on this scene.
Only proxies of raws that take the per-file camera look (Photo::relative_wb) go stale: JPEG/PNG/DNG proxies are never rebuilt for the look. The opening scan runs once per LOOK_VERSION (a look-version marker in the smart previews folder), not at every library open; Build Smart Previews still refreshes stale proxies. Each proxy is checked and written under one lock, so the background refresh and library.smartPreviews never write the same file at once. LOOK_VERSION 2: main's DRO / ILCE-7CR camera-look changes (#528, #583, #568, #616).

A smart preview keeps the colour and tone curves the camera-look fit gave it, so a
fit change (#499, #528, #583) left existing previews with the old look. They now
record LOOK_VERSION in the header; an older one is rebuilt from its original when the
library is opened or Build Smart Previews runs, and kept as it is while the original
is offline.
Recover the unpublished denoise work against current upstream. Preserve later opt-in model setup, shared Rust HTTPS downloads, pending-photo resume and an Amount-independent switch. Keep original RAWs unchanged and share the current color finish between ordinary and denoised sources.
Bound public tiling inputs, refuse corrupt-cache exports, and retain synthetic/real-model coverage. Include two Windows path spelling fixes in existing tests. No model weights, face code, media or Tract runtime are included.
Validation: cargo xtask ci (all seven gates); installed RawNIND CPU/GPU agreement 1.38e-6; native CPU preview/export on a public 24 MP Sony RAW, unchanged original SHA-256.

Smart previews store the decoded source with the fitted colour matrix
baked in, but the file-local tone curve lives in the decoder's
SourceInfo, which a proxy did not keep: an offline ARW rendered and
exported with the generic filmic curve instead (darker, a different
look). The proxy header now carries the curve (validated on load,
ignored when invalid), DecodedSource::info_or merges it into the header
facts, and is_valid reads the longer header.

- Convert to DNG / Copy as DNG: the encoded DNG must decode to the same raw
data, then goes through safe_file::write_new_unique (temp file, sync,
read-back, hard-linked to the first free <stem>.dng / -2 / -3 name, never
replacing a file). On failure no DNG is left, the photo is not relinked
and the raw copy is kept.
- Photo Merge writes its DNG the same way.
- Smart previews are written atomically; smart::is_valid (header + complete
JPEG) decides "built", has_smart_preview and the offline fallback, so a
proxy cut short is rebuilt (reported as `repaired`); moving proxies to a
new folder never deletes a good one in favour of a damaged copy and
copies across drives atomically.
Stacked on the #93 branch (shared lightcraft_catalog::safe_file helper).

Smart previews always lived in <library>/Smart Previews, so a large set of proxies
filled the library's drive. The folder is now a per-library setting (prefs.json):
- library.smartPreviewsLocation shows the effective folder (path, count, size,
availability) or changes it; changing it needs an explicit choice for the
previews already built (move, leave or discard), and reset returns to the
library's own folder.
- The new folder must accept writes before anything moves. A folder whose parent
is missing (an unplugged drive) is an error and is never created on the current
drive; building also refuses while a chosen folder is unavailable.
- Building, discarding, status and offline rendering all use the chosen folder.
- Settings -> Performance -> Smart previews shows the path before building, what
it holds, the existing-previews choice, Choose Folder... and Use Library Folder.
The thumbnail cache stays in the library.

- Smart previews (smart.rs): a ~1 MB proxy per photo in the library's "Smart Previews" folder
(the decoded preview-size source, scaled, sRGB-encoded JPEG behind a one-line header). When
a photo's original is missing (an unplugged drive), its source loads from the proxy: the
photo renders, edits and exports at proxy size. library.smartPreviews {discard?},
photo.smartPreview status; File ▸ Previews ▸ Build / Discard Smart Previews; Info shows
"Original offline · editing the smart preview".
- Photo ▸ Duplicate (photo.duplicate): a real "-copy" file with the same settings, metadata,
rating, flag, label and albums; one undo step.
