The reader took only activeTab from <workbookView> and the writer wrote
that alone back, so a workbook Excel saved with the sheet tabs and both
scroll bars hidden (and a non-default tab split) opened with all three
shown and lost the settings on save.
Workbook gains a view field (WorkbookView: show_sheet_tabs,
show_horizontal_scroll, show_vertical_scroll, tab_ratio; the format
defaults are shown/shown/shown/600). The reader fills it from the
<workbookView> attributes; the writer emits each attribute only when it
differs from the default, so an ordinary workbook file is unchanged.
Regression test: workbook_view_settings_survive_a_round_trip reads a
package carrying the hidden settings, checks the model, and checks the
written workbook.xml keeps all four attributes (and that a default
workbook still writes the bare element).
Scope: this is the data-loss half of #3057. The app does not act on the
settings yet and File > Options has no controls for them; that is the
other half the ticket was split into.
The writer numbers sheetIds from 1 in sheet order, so a rewritten workbook
changes the id of any sheet that is not part of a gapless series from 1.
Anything that recognises a sheet by its id (parts carried through as they
are, external tools) loses it. The model keeps the sheetId it read
(Sheet::file_id, PreservedSheet::sheet_id, not serialised to JSON) and the
writer writes it back; a new sheet, or a copy with a taken id, gets the first
free one.
- The workbook's active sheet is an atomic set in place (Workbook::active_sheet /
set_active_sheet), so a window swap or sheet switch never clones the
Arc<Workbook> or marks it dirty. Selections already live in DocState and the
window views. Save records the sheet of the most recently active window.
- A dialog taken out of its window while it runs goes back to that window when
a command run from it switched windows (dialogs::show, ui.dialog.confirm).
- view.arrangeAll {arrange?: tiled|horizontal|vertical|cascade, activeWorkbook?}
returns the visible windows, active first; the desktop moves and sizes the
native windows over the main window's monitor. New Window and Arrange All
buttons on the View ribbon; Arrange Windows dialog.

xl/sharedStrings.xml can carry phonetic runs (<rPh sb="0" eb="2"><t>ふりがな</t></rPh>)
and a <phoneticPr> beside a string item. GridCraft read only the text and wrote every
string back as <si><t>…</t></si>, so a plain open + save deleted a Japanese workbook's
furigana.
Both are now read — offsets validated against the base text, runs with bad or missing
offsets, sb >= eb or no reading dropped with a warning, and never used to index — and
kept on the workbook as Workbook::phonetics, one entry per string text. The writer
emits them next to the <si> of the same text. The saved table holds each text once, so
two identical texts cannot keep two different readings: the reader keeps the first and
warns. Strings without phonetic data are written byte for byte as before.

A workbook GridCraft created had no <fileVersion> in workbook.xml; it now
names GridCraft, and keeps it on later saves.
A workbook read from an Excel file still keeps its <fileVersion> as it was,
appName="xl" included. Observed in Excel 16.114: with the calcFeatures
extension present, Excel uses the saved cell values only when appName is
"xl". appName="gridcraft", "Calc" or no appName makes it recalculate
everything on open, which brings back #799 (lookups into closed workbooks
open as #CALC!). The application that last saved the file is recorded in
docProps/app.xml <Application>GridCraft</Application>, which GridCraft
already writes on every save and which Excel's recalculation ignores.
Every edit copies the workbook for its undo step (copy-on-write: sheets
and 64-row bands of cells are shared). A floating picture's bytes
(Image.data) and the VBA project (Workbook.vba_project) were plain
Vec<u8>, so each edit on a sheet with a picture, and every edit in a
workbook with macros, kept another full copy of them, up to the 100
steps of the history. They are Arc<Vec<u8>> now, as cell pictures
already are, with base64 helpers for serde (b64::shared, b64::opt). JSON
and XLSX are unchanged.
Measured on macOS 27 (Apple M3 Max), gridcraft-cli, kernel peak
footprint: a 19 MB picture and 50 cell edits on its sheet, 992 -> 22 MB;
10 edits, 215 -> 21 MB.

The writer gave every drawing its own xl/media/imageN part even when the pictures
had the same bytes, so a workbook with one logo on 16 sheets grew 16 copies of
it on a plain open and save. Out::image_part now returns the existing part when
an identical picture was already written (same extension and bytes), and every
drawing's relationship points to it, as Excel stores a copied picture.
Chart sheets (a sheet that holds one chart; Move Chart > New sheet, F11) were
skipped on open, and their chart sheet, drawing, chart, style and colour parts
were dropped with them because the pass-through treats those kinds as content
GridCraft rewrites. Saving a workbook lost every chart sheet.
They are now kept as they were: the <sheet> entry (name, visibility and its
place among the worksheets), the chartsheet part and everything behind it,
byte for byte, written back in place. The workbook's other sheet positions
(active tab, print areas, scoped names) are computed with the chart sheets
counted. A chart sheet is left out on save when the chart is no longer
valid for the workbook: a sheet it plots was deleted or renamed, or a
worksheet took its name.
Excel uses the cached cell values of a saved file only when workbook.xml has both <fileVersion> and the calcFeatures extension; without them it recalculates everything on open, and lookups into closed workbooks come back as #CALC!. Both are now read into the workbook's kept content and written back in schema order: fileVersion first, the calcFeatures ext in <extLst> last. A workbook that had neither gets neither.
The ribbon button toggled structure protection silently. It now opens a
Protect Structure and Windows dialog with an optional password; when a
password was set, unprotecting asks for it and really verifies it
(SHA-512, spin count 100000, salted). The password hash is read from and
written to XLSX workbookProtection (workbookAlgorithmName/HashValue/
SaltValue/SpinCount or the legacy workbookPassword); an unreadable one
stays locked. File › Info uses the same flow.

Content types (and extensions) of kept parts come from the input file and
were written into [Content_Types].xml unescaped, so a quote or angle bracket
injected XML; they are now attribute-escaped. Each sheet re-read and kept
its VML drawing (up to 16 MB) outside MAX_KEPT_TOTAL, so many sheets sharing
one highly compressed drawing amplified memory; the drawing is now read
within and charged to the remaining kept-bytes allowance.

Pass-through of package content GridCraft does not model: on read the raw
parts are kept with their content types and relationship graph per owner
(package root, workbook, sheet); on write they get fresh part names where
needed and new relationship ids, and the r:ids in kept XML are rewritten.
Kept: custom document properties, ribbon customisation, add-in task panes,
custom XML, links to external workbooks with <externalReferences> (never
followed), connections, sheet query tables, printer settings with the
<pageSetup r:id> (#324), form and ActiveX controls, OLE objects and sheet
backgrounds with their VML shapes (merged with GridCraft's note shapes).
Content whose graph reaches parts GridCraft rewrites is dropped with a
warning; sheet content goes with its sheet and is not copied by Copy Sheet.
Fixes#324

insert.checkbox existed but had no ribbon button, replaced existing values
with FALSE and was written to XLSX as an invalid number format. Now:
Insert > Checkbox (Cell Controls); empty cells start FALSE, other values
stay and display as General; toggling an emptied box checks it and only
checkbox cells toggle; Delete unchecks first, then removes the boxes; XLSX
reads and writes the checkbox as Excel's feature-property-bag cell control
([MS-XLSX] 2.1.22, 2.3.9, 2.4.99).

- Writer: one xl/threadedComments/threadedCommentN.xml per sheet with
comments (thread, replies via parentId, done for resolved, dT when known)
and xl/persons/person.xml (one person per author), with the [MS-XLSX]
relationship and content types. Each thread keeps its legacy note, linked
by the tc={id} author and xr:uid; its body is the text plus replies.
Ids are GUID-shaped and deterministic.
- Reader: keeps dT timestamps (Comment.dates, JSON-compatible), drops
replies whose thread is missing, and reads note visibility from the VML
<x:Visible/> (best effort, broken VML skipped silently).
- Invalid dates are never written. Round-trip and hostile-input tests.

Histogram, box & whisker, waterfall, funnel, treemap and sunburst charts
were written as clustered columns, and reading skipped such charts in
files made by Excel, which keeps them as cx:chartSpace (chartex) parts.
The writer now writes these kinds as chartEx parts, as Excel lays them
out: the data goes through hidden _xlchart.v1.N workbook names, each
part comes with chart style and colour parts, and the drawing frames it
in mc:AlternateContent with a text-box fallback. Fills are written out
(series in theme accents, waterfall decreases and treemap/sunburst boxes
in their own, a white chart area), so they don't depend on the style
part. The reader reads the parts back (resolving the _xlchart names,
which aren't kept as names) with data, title, axis titles, legend,
labels and colours, and follows mc:AlternateContent in drawings.
Opening an .xlsm and saving it silently stripped xl/vbaProject.bin, turning a
macro-enabled workbook into a macro-free one — data loss for anyone whose work
depends on macros. GridCraft still does not run VBA, but it now carries the
project through unchanged.
- model: `Workbook.vba_project: Option<Vec<u8>>` (base64 in JSON via a new
`b64::opt` helper). `None` = no macros.
- xlsx read: capture the `vbaProject` relationship's bytes instead of warning
and dropping them; warn that macros are kept but not executed.
- xlsx write: when present, emit `xl/vbaProject.bin` byte-identical, add the
`.../relationships/vbaProject` relationship, switch the main part to the
macro-enabled content type (`...sheet.macroEnabled.main+xml`) and add the
`application/vnd.ms-office.vbaProject` override.
- engine: `view.macros` lists the preserved project alongside GridCraft's own
scripts (`{"kind":"vba","executed":false}`), so callers can see it is there.
- ROADMAP: scope now "preserve, don't execute" (was "out of scope").
Tests: round-trip byte-identical blob + correct content types/relationship;
capture from a foreign-produced .xlsm; a macro-free workbook stays clean.
