**~30% ready**: a user who opens an Excel workbook with charts and saves it gets simpler charts

Series data, categories and names may refer to defined names, as dynamic (OFFSET) ranges do:
Excel writes a workbook-scoped name as `[0]!Name` in `<c:f>`. GridCraft reads it as the bare
name and writes it back with `[0]!`; a sheet-scoped name is written `Sheet!Name`. Excel needs the
qualifier: with a bare name in `<c:f>` it draws the whole chart blank, without a repair prompt
(observed in Excel for Windows, Microsoft 365). External books (`[1]Sheet1!…`) are kept as they
are (#1686). Such series get no `numCache`/`strCache` on save (#1690).

# Decisions
## Bound repeated XLSX column expansion (#1022)
Limit each worksheet to 1,000,000 nondefault column assignments across all `<cols>` blocks.
This allows more than 60 full-grid passes while bounding repeated work on overlapping spans;
counting only the final map size would not limit that work. Charge each clipped span before
inserting it, after the existing default-record skip. Exceeding the limit returns the existing
`IoError::TooLarge`, which aborts the import instead of silently dropping a partially read sheet.
Keep the current last-wins semantics rather than introduce interval storage or normalization.
## Formula localization uses the existing interface preference
PR #98 builds on the persisted `UiState.language` introduced by #31 and extended by #104.

Dynamic-array formulas keep their mark on save. A formula read with dynamic-array cell metadata
(`cm`, the `XLDAPR` record in `xl/metadata.xml`) is written back with it, together with the
metadata part, even when it returns one value and GridCraft's own shape analysis would not need
array evaluation. Dropping the mark turned such formulas into legacy ones, which Excel evaluates
with implicit intersection: `SUMPRODUCT(IFERROR(B1:B3/C1:C3,0))` recalculated to a different
value in Excel. Moving the formula, inserting or deleting rows and columns, and renaming sheets or
names keep the mark; retyping the formula drops it, and the writer then decides from the
formula's shape. Rich-value metadata other than cell pictures (data types, `#SPILL!` error
values) is still dropped.

| Date | Change | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-21 | minor | HTML (Save as Web Page) writes pictures (`data:` URI `<img>`) and charts (inline SVG from the chart crate's drawing primitives, text included) at their anchors; the table uses the sheet's column widths and row heights when the sheet has either, and output for sheets without pictures or charts is unchanged |
| 2026-10-20 | trivial | XLSX shared strings: Japanese phonetic runs (ふりがな, `<rPh sb="…" eb="…">` with `<phoneticPr>`) are read into the workbook and written back next to the string with the same text, so an open + save no longer deletes them; bad offsets and readings are dropped with a warning, a `<phoneticPr>` without runs is kept on its own, and when duplicate `<si>` items share a text but not a reading only the first reading is written (reported on open) (`phonetic_tests.rs`) |
| 2026-10-20 | minor | A workbook theme's major/minor per-script typefaces (`<a:font script="Arab" typeface="…"/>`, also Hebr, Jpan and the rest) are read and written back in file order after `<a:cs>`; they were dropped before. A hostile file is held to 64 entries of 256 characters |
| 2026-10-20 | trivial | A workbook theme's major/minor East Asian (`<a:ea>`) and complex-script (`<a:cs>`) typefaces are read and written back, so a Japanese theme's fonts (e.g. 游ゴシック) survive open + save; they were deleted before because the model had nowhere to keep them. Rendering still resolves fonts without them (follow-up) |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | XLSX font charset and family values are preserved on save, retaining the character set and family used for substitute font selection |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | CSV and text import decodes likely Windows-1256 Arabic; other invalid UTF-8 retains the Windows-1252 fallback |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | .xls import skips dialog sheets (WsBool `fDialog`), which share the worksheet BOF type and were read as empty worksheets |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | `.xls` import reads WINDOW2: right-to-left sheets (common in older Arabic and Hebrew files) open right-to-left, and hidden gridlines, headings and zero values and Show Formulas carry over |
| 2026-10-19 | trivial | XLSX text boxes and shapes keep right-to-left paragraph direction (`a:pPr rtl`, ECMA-376 Part 1 §21.1.2.2.7): read from the first paragraph and written on every paragraph; output without it is unchanged |
| 2026-10-18 | trivial | `file.open {csvAsText: true}` keeps every CSV/TSV/TXT field as the text the file holds, so identifiers (GTINs, SKUs, ZIP codes) keep their digits and leading zeros (#1808; a preference and a CLI flag are separate work) |
| 2026-10-18 | trivial | XLSX PivotTables: `rowGrandTotals` is the Grand Total row and `colGrandTotals` the Grand Total column. Both were read and written the other way round, which a GridCraft round trip hid, so an Excel file with only one grand total opened showing the other |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | HTML (Save as Web Page and clipboard) marks right-to-left sheets and right-to-left cell text with `dir` |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | XLSX charts: `[0]!Name` (a workbook-scoped defined name) in series references is read as the name, so the series resolve instead of showing `#NAME?`. Names in chart references are written qualified (`[0]!Name`, or `Sheet!Name` for a sheet-scoped name): Excel draws a chart with a bare name blank (#1686) |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | XLSX reads and writes the workbook's show-objects setting (`workbookPr showObjects`: all, placeholders, none), which Ctrl+6 switches; a file without it is saved without it |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | XLSX: pictures in headers and footers (`&G`, the VML drawing `<legacyDrawingHF>` names and its images) are kept on save; they are still not shown (#1257) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | XLSX column imports refuse more than 1,000,000 cumulative expanded assignments per sheet before expanding the next span; repeated overlaps cannot bypass the work limit (#1022) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | XLSX: a note keeps its box's place and size (`<x:Anchor>` and the VML width and height) through open and save, moving with its cell; notes made here get the default box (#1608) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | XLSX PivotTables: two value fields without a column field are written with `firstHeaderRow="0"` and `hideValuesRow`, so Excel 365 doesn't add a `Values` row that can turn the report into `#SPILL!` (#1447, item 6) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | XLSX PivotTables: a PivotChart's link to its PivotTable is written behind the workbook in brackets (`[Q1 Report.xlsx]Sheet2!PivotTable1`; `Workbook.xlsx` when the file name is unknown), so Excel binds the chart to the PivotTable instead of showing an ordinary chart; the reader drops the prefix (#1447, item 7) |
| 2026-10-15 | minor | XLSX: formulas and PivotTable sources quote sheet names like Excel (a leading `.`, R1C1-like and cell-like names), so `'.x'!A1` no longer saves as `.x!A1`, which Excel could not open (#1458) |
| 2026-10-15 | minor | XLSX text preserves CR and CRLF across save/reopen; shared strings use `_x000D_` and other XML text uses `&#13;` (#1488) |
| 2026-10-15 | minor | XLSX save keeps legacy `INDEX`/`MATCH` formulas scalar instead of marking them as dynamic arrays (#1505) |
| 2026-10-14 | trivial | Formula parser: text longer than Excel's 8,192 characters, and postfix chains (`1%%%…`, `f(1)(1)…`) past the 256-level nesting limit, are parse errors (the cell keeps its formula text and cached value) instead of trees deep enough to overflow the stack when a hostile file is opened, saved or dropped |
| 2026-10-14 | minor | XLSX formulas read with dynamic-array metadata (`cm`) keep it on save, so Excel does not recalculate them with implicit intersection |
| 2026-10-14 | minor | PDF export writes clickable annotations for safe cell URLs and destinations on printed pages; CLI `convert` accepts `.pdf` output (#954) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | XLSX export keeps a picture shared by several sheets as one media part (#985) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | XLSX chart sheets are kept on save (#727) |
| 2026-10-12 | trivial | CSV and TSV export is capped at 512 MiB and refuses a larger used range with an error (#528) |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | `.xls` import reads the calculation settings (CalcMode, CalcIter, CalcCount, CalcDelta, CalcPrecision), so circular models calculate instead of showing `#CIRC!` (#724) |

# Greek (el) interface localization
The UI now offers **Ελληνικά** via View > Interface language and uses Greek automatically
on a fresh installation when the system locale is `el` or `el-GR`.
The localization follows the existing GridCraft interface translation infrastructure:
- `crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/el.rs` supplies Greek translations of UI strings.
- `crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs` registers `Language::El` (`el`), language selection,
persisted preferences, and translation tests.
- Command identifiers, spreadsheet content, function names and references remain stable.
- Greek UI translation **does not add a Greek spelling dictionary** or translate formula
function names, locale-specific separators or number formats.
- Unknown UI labels continue to fall back to the original English text.
The Greek strings were translated specifically for GridCraft. They are not extracted from
proprietary spreadsheet software or localization assets. The MIT OR Apache-2.0 repository
licenses apply to this contribution.

On Windows, AltGr arrives as Ctrl+Alt: a Ctrl+Alt key that also types a character is treated as

| Date | Change | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-10-23 | minor | Frozen panes: Page Up, Ctrl+Up and Shift variants that move from the scrolled rows into the frozen ones bring the scrolled rows back to the top, so the rows in between are seen again (Page Up from far down used to end on row 1 with the view still a page down); Ctrl+Left and Alt+Page Up do the same for frozen columns. Other ways of selecting a frozen cell (click, Find, Go To, Undo, formula pointing) leave the view where it is |
| 2026-10-23 | minor | After a left-drag of the fill handle an Auto Fill Options button sits below the filled cells; its menu redoes the fill as Copy Cells, Fill Series, Fill Formatting Only or Fill Without Formatting (undoes the drag's fill, then `edit.autoFill` in that mode). It goes away when the workbook changes or the selection moves (#1403) |
| 2026-10-22 | minor | Show Outline Symbols (`view.showOutlineSymbols`, Ctrl+8): a sheet can hide the outline's level buttons and brackets while keeping its outline, as Excel saves with `showOutlineSymbols="0"` (read and written); the grid then gives the bands no room |
| 2026-10-22 | minor | A number in a repeat-fill format (`*`, as in the Accounting format) that is too wide for its column shows #### like any other number, instead of the fill rebuilding the value so its leading digits were cut off (2,509.00 CHF drawn as "509.00 CHF") |
| 2026-10-21 | minor | Background error checking, first part (#1994): a constant whose text would be a number if typed (signs, thousands, currency, percent, exponent, parenthesised negative) gets Excel's green corner triangle; the active cell then shows a warning button whose menu names the problem and offers Convert to Number for the selection (`formulas.convertToNumber`). Dates, times and fractions kept as text and formula results are not flagged, as in Excel |
| 2026-10-21 | minor | Paste Special laid out as Excel's: Paste and Operation options each in two columns inside a frame, Skip blanks and Transpose side by side, Paste Link as a button that pastes references at once; labels translated (the generic form didn't translate them) and the window no longer runs past the screen |
| 2026-10-21 | minor | Form dialogs (conditional-format quick rules, New Name, Remove Duplicates, Text to Columns and every other `Dialog::form`) fit their content: OK and Cancel sit in a row under the last field instead of a right-to-left layout that took the screen's whole height and left the buttons floating halfway down |
| 2026-10-20 | minor | Esc and Enter close a message over the cell editor, such as a data validation alert, and the entry stays open to fix, with the keyboard back in it. Before, the editor took them (the first Esc cancelled the edit behind the alert and only the second closed it), and after the message typing went nowhere until the cell was clicked |
| 2026-10-19 | minor | Ctrl+Enter (`range.fill`) gives each cell what typing the input there gives: a General cell gets the automatic number format (`5%`, `$5`, `3/4/2026`, `=TODAY()`) even when it already held a value, and a cell with its own format, a formatted row or column, or Text keeps it. Cells that held a value used to keep General (`5%` showed 0.05), and empty cells took the active cell's format |
| 2026-10-19 | trivial | While a mouse button is held (a click or a drag selecting cells) the selection outline is drawn on its cells at once instead of gliding after the pointer, which read as lag; keyboard moves still glide |
| 2026-10-18 | minor | Keytip letters typed with left Alt held continue the sequence (Alt+H, O, A / Alt+H, O, I ran nothing before: Alt+letter cancelled keytips); other Alt combinations, AltGr and macOS Option are unchanged (#1846) |
| 2026-10-17 | minor | A Ctrl+Alt+letter key that types a character (a user-defined Windows hotkey such as Ctrl+Alt+A for `ä`) types it instead of running the Ctrl+letter shortcut, e.g. Select All (#1530) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Right-drag on the fill handle opens the fill menu on release: Copy Cells, Fill Series, Fill Formatting Only, Fill Without Formatting, Series…; Esc cancels the drag or closes the menu without filling |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | With the active cell in a Table whose header row is scrolled out of view, the column headings show the header names and their filter buttons in place of the letters (#1423) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Ctrl+6 hides every object (charts, pictures, shapes, slicers) and shows them again; hidden objects are not drawn, take no clicks and drop their selection, and the setting is saved with the workbook (`workbookPr showObjects`) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Ctrl+Shift+A (Control+Shift+A on a Mac) after a function name, or after its `(`, inserts the argument names and the closing parenthesis, as in Excel; one Undo in the editor takes them back |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Advanced Filter ribbon dialog, optional criteria for unique-only extraction (#1622); safe copy-to output (#1031) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Remove Duplicates shows an editable Range field initialized from the selection and passes it to the engine on OK (#1388). Live range-picking outside the dialog remains unsupported |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | Web printing registers one-shot `afterprint` cleanup before opening the dialog; missing content windows and setup, listener or print failures also release the hidden iframe and PDF blob URL (#1054) |
| 2026-10-16 | minor | The shared UI clock delegates to the core Unix-millisecond clock, which reads Date.now() on wasm, instead of returning zero there (#1026). Native clock contract tested; browser timing remains unverified |
| 2026-10-16 | trivial | Web: preferences (theme, interface size, language, editing options…) are kept in the browser's `localStorage` between visits, as the desktop app keeps `ui.json` and `prefs.json`; before, a reload brought back light mode and the defaults (#1562) |
| 2026-10-15 | minor | File › Options › Formulas: Maximum Iterations (1 to 32767) and Maximum Change (0 or more) under Enable iterative calculation, disabled while it is off; invalid entries are refused with a message |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | The File view's recent list tells when each workbook was last changed, read off the UI thread |
| 2026-10-15 | minor | Number-format named colors use their RGB values; indexed `[Color1]`–`[Color56]` resolve through the shared legacy palette in grid and PDF (#1452) |
| 2026-10-14 | minor | Spill-child formula bar uses the anchor formula with disabled theme text and blocks formula-bar edit entry; selection and recalculation restore ordinary behavior |
| 2026-10-14 | minor | PivotTable source-field list fills the pane width so its scrollbar stays at the list's right edge |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | Dragging a sheet tab with Ctrl held (Cmd or Option on macOS) drops a copy of the sheet where the tab is released, with the copy cursor (#971) |
| 2026-10-13 | trivial | More Colors… and Recent Colors (#928) |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | Grid drags keep their own cursor over selection borders, fill handles and outside the grid; hover resumes on release (#936) |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | AutoFill month patterns retain the workbook's date system, preventing shifted dates in 1904 workbooks when filling forward or backward |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | Sheet tab bar: the tab strip shrinks to its tabs, up to 60% of the bar, so New sheet (+) sits right after the last tab and the horizontal scrollbar takes the rest (part of #943) |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | Horizontal scrollbar in the sheet tab bar: drag, track click pages, frozen columns excluded from the page (#840) |
| 2026-10-13 | minor | Formula-entry Command/Ctrl-click adds arguments and Shift-click extends references; ordinary replacement and dragging retain their behavior. Readiness estimates unchanged. |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | Next/previous sheet navigation no longer activates hidden worksheets at either workbook boundary; command tests cover Hidden, VeryHidden and selection retention |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | The File view's recent list tells when each workbook was last changed, read off the UI thread |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | Ctrl+wheel zoom steps along a ladder of percentages about 20% apart that never skips 100%, gliding to each step with animations on, so a notch out undoes a notch in (it drifted: 100 → 122 → 101); Excel steps 15 points, see decisions.md |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | Page Layout view: left/right/top/bottom margins are dragged on the rulers (#792) |
| 2026-10-12 | minor | Alt+Down opens the active filter header's existing popup, with validation priority and mirrored anchoring on right-to-left sheets (part of #441) |
