M1: say that the automation roots reach only the headless side (#835)
The CLI help and docs/mcp.md described the roots as confining whatever the run touches, which reads as if they also applied to `mcp --attach`. They don't: an attached server runs the commands inside the app, and the app confines them from its own flags. VectorCraft documents the same split, and the missing sentence is what made the difference confusing, as #835 reports. Co-authored-by: xiaou61 <113765024+xiaou61@users.noreply.github.com> |

cli: confine info, export, convert, render and run to automation roots
`figcraft-cli mcp` takes `--automation-read-root` / `--automation-write-root` to confine the files an agent's commands touch, but the file subcommands took neither: `figcraft-cli run script.json --out /anywhere/x.figcraft` read and wrote as the user who started it. The README invites agent use, and a script or agent driving `run`, `export` or `convert` had no way to say which folders it may reach (#833). `info`, `export`, `convert`, `render` and `run` take the same two flags, with the same semantics: repeatable, the folders must exist, reads inside a read or write root, writes only inside a write root, everything else refused -- so giving no write root denies writing altogether. Without the flags they behave as before. The flags would have been decorative on their own: `figcraft_engine` enforces roots through `file_access`, which the engine's own loads already go through, but the CLI wrote its output with `std::fs` and read its script the same way. Those three calls now go through `file_access` too, so the confinement reaches the files the CLI itself touches. |

M8: confine MCP file access with --automation-read-root/--automation-write-root (#715) (#746)
- `figcraft-cli mcp --automation-read-root DIR --automation-write-root DIR` (each repeatable, `--flag=DIR` works too). When either is given, every file an agent's tool call reads must lie inside a read root or a write root, and every file it writes inside a write root. Anything else is an ordinary tool error (`automation path rejected: … is outside the folders that may be written: …`); nothing is written and the server keeps serving. Without the flags nothing changes.
- The desktop app takes the same flags (`figcraft --control PORT --automation-read-root DIR …`) and confines every control request and every frame of every window to them, so `figcraft-cli mcp --attach` drives a confined app. `--attach` together with the flags is a usage error, because the app runs the commands and only the app can confine them.
- New engine module `crates/engine/src/file_access.rs`: `Roots` (resolution and comparison), a thread-scoped `confined(roots, f)`, and the file primitives (`read`, `read_capped`, `open`, `metadata`, `read_dir`, `write` (atomic), `create_dir_all`, `exists`, `is_dir`). Every engine file access now goes through it. `crates/engine/clippy.toml` denies `std::fs::*`, `File::open/create`, `OpenOptions::open`, `Path::exists/is_file/is_dir/metadata/read_dir/canonicalize` and `figcraft_format::{write_file_atomic, save_file, load_file}` everywhere else in the engine, so a command added later is confined without a check of its own.
- `ui.screenshot` and `ui.render` return the PNG as base64 `data` when no `path` is given (before, `ui.screenshot` wrote `figcraft-screenshot.png` in the working directory and `ui.render` required a path). The attached MCP backend uses that, so it no longer writes and deletes temporary PNGs, and a confined app needs no exemption for them.
- `initialize`'s `instructions` name the folders the agent may read and write.
- `figcraft-cli` options may be given more than once (`Args::values`); single-valued options keep the last value, as before.
- Docs: `docs/mcp.md` › Confining file access (options, semantics, coverage, resolution, limits), `docs/control-protocol.md` › Confining file access and the optional `path` of `ui.screenshot` / `ui.render`, `docs/cli.md`, `figcraft-cli --help`, and the Automation line plus a revision row in `docs/target-app-parity.md`.
Fixes #715, fixes #481.

M7: headless renders use system fonts
Headless runs (`figcraft-cli export`, `render`, `convert`, `run`, and the headless MCP server) never indexed the installed fonts, so a text layer in an installed family (Segoe UI, Inter installed per user, ...) was measured and drawn with a fallback face, while the desktop app used the real one. Auto layout sizes from MCP agents therefore differed from what users see in the app. - `figcraft_text::scan_system_fonts_on_demand()`: the font database indexes the system fonts the first time it is used (first text layout, font lookup or font listing). `figcraft-cli` turns it on at startup for every subcommand, so a run that touches no text never pays for the scan. The desktop app keeps its background scan. - `scan_system_fonts()` now runs once per process (a `OnceLock`): racing callers wait for the one directory walk instead of each walking the folders. - Opt-out for reproducible renders: `--no-system-fonts` on any subcommand, or `FIGCRAFT_NO_SYSTEM_FONTS=1` (honoured by the desktop app too). Text then uses only the built-in fonts, as before. - The scan is cheaper: it reads each file's headers, table directories and `name` tables instead of whole files (about 460 MB on this Windows machine), and takes file metadata from the directory listing instead of a lookup per file. This also speeds up the desktop app's background scan. - Browser/wasm build unchanged (the scan is a no-op there). - Docs: `docs/cli.md` (new Fonts section) and `docs/mcp.md` (Fonts under the backends table); CLI usage text mentions the flag. |

M6: experimental .fig export
An experimental, best-effort `.fig` export, so work done in FigCraft can be handed back as a `.fig` file. It is written from the same public format write-ups the importer uses and is the inverse of the importer's mapping. Only round trips through FigCraft's own importer are verified; other apps may not open every file.
- **Encoder** (`crates/format/src/fig/kiwi.rs`): the kiwi encoder that test fixtures used is now shipped code. It never panics and checks every value against the schema: unknown fields or enum names, missing struct fields, wrong types, out-of-range numbers and non-finite floats are errors, and NULs inside strings are dropped. Varints and floats are written exactly the way the decoder reads them. `Schema::parse` reads the compact text schema form, and the importer's tests use it too.
- **Writer** (`crates/format/src/fig/export.rs`): writes the zip (`canvas.fig`, `meta.json`, `thumbnail.png`, `images/<hash>`). `canvas.fig` holds the fig-kiwi header, then a raw-deflate binary schema and a raw-deflate message (flate2's pure-Rust backend, already in the tree; no new dependencies). The schema covers only the fields we write. The canvas, images, blobs, node count and nesting depth are capped, and floats are made finite before they are written.
- **Mapping:** pages; frames, groups, sections, rectangles, ellipses (arcs), polygons, stars, lines and vectors (vector network blobs with per-point radius, mirroring and caps, plus fill outlines); text with styled runs (UTF-16 indexed) and list types; slices; boolean groups; solid, gradient and image paints (image bytes included); strokes; effects; corners; constraints; masks; auto layout, including grids with tracks and cells; child layout; layout grids; export settings; components, component sets and their properties. Instances are written as their main plus the fields their layers change, by id path. This covers nested instances and swaps, and fields the main sets but the instance clears. Prototype interactions (triggers, navigation and overlay actions, transitions, easing), scrolling and flow starts are included. Everything skipped is reported in a warnings list: style links, variables, comments, Dev Mode data, plugin data, guides, slots, brush and width-profile strokes, pattern fills, image adjustments, variable and conditional actions, and more.
- **Import fixes found by the round trips** (`map.rs`): ellipse arcs, boolean operation types and component set descriptions are now read. Durations are read as whole milliseconds, because seconds stored as 32-bit floats used to truncate by 1 ms.
- **File writes:** a failed write no longer leaves its `.tmp-figcraft` file behind. The junk-parameter sweep found this.
- **Commands and UI:**
- `file.export {format: "fig"}`, or any path ending in `.fig`, writes the whole file and returns `warnings`. Without a path it returns base64 `data`.
- File > Export... has a new "The whole file" section with a ".fig (experimental)" row. A note under it says other apps may not open every exported file. After export, a toast reports how many kinds of content were left out.
- `figcraft-cli export --format fig` (or `-o x.fig`) and `convert` to `.fig` print the warnings as `note:` lines.
- MCP's `export` accepts `format: "fig"` and passes the warnings through.
- New UI strings have English and Spanish entries.
- **Docs:** file-format-parity.md has a new export section covering what is written, what is skipped, and that only round trips through our own importer are verified. Also updated: mcp.md, cli.md, gaps.md (gap 1), target-app-parity.md and ROADMAP.md. Grading is kept low. Import/export goes to 86%/58% and file formats to 60%. The file-exchange discount stays at x0.85, because nothing shows that another app opens these files.

M11: plugin directory on figcraft-server
A self-hosted plugin directory, with no third-party service: `figcraft-server` keeps plugin bundles,
the app browses, installs and updates from it, and `figcraft-cli` publishes to it.
- **Bundles** (`figcraft_plugin::bundle`): a plugin's manifest, module and up to 32 plain-named
assets in one uncompressed, length-prefixed binary form (nothing can expand beyond the bytes
sent). Its SHA-256 names it. `Bundle::decode` never allocates beyond its input and refuses
trailing bytes; `Bundle::check` parses the manifest (refusing a plugin API this build doesn't
run), requires a version of 1-4 numbers, compiles the module without running it (only the
sandbox's imports allowed) and checks asset names (no paths, no dot files, no Windows device
names, unique ignoring case). Manifests gain an optional `author`.
- **Protocol**: a new connection kind next to managing and team-library connections:
`OpenPlugins {key}` then `Plugins {list | fetch | publish | unpublish}`. Browsing needs no
credential; publishing and unpublishing need the server key (a wrong key is refused). Older
servers refuse the connection and the app says the server has no plugin directory. The protocol
version is unchanged; old clients are unaffected.
- **Server** (`apps/figcraft-server/src/directory.rs`): `<data>/plugins/index.json` plus
`<data>/plugins/<sha256>.bin`, so no publisher-chosen name reaches the file system. Every publish
is checked in full and must be a newer version; caps `max_plugins` (versions, 0 turns it off),
`max_plugin_mb` (<= 32), `max_plugins_mb`. Fetches re-hash the file before sending (a damaged
bundle is never sent) and share a download budget (~32 MiB/s) so a flood is refused, not queued.
Damaged index entries are skipped and reported, never deleted; an unreadable index lists nothing
and refuses writes until the operator fixes it. Operator moderation:
`figcraft-server plugins [list]` and `plugins remove ID [--version V]` (offline or through the
running server). Logs name ids and versions, never keys.
- **App**: Plugins > Manage plugins gets Installed / Browse tabs. Browse lists a server's plugins
(version, author as typed, size, access) with a search; nothing is fetched until Browse is
pressed. Install / Update open a confirmation listing the permissions asked for, the source and
the SHA-256; only its button downloads. The download must match the listed SHA-256 (and the one
shown), then is checked like an imported plugin before anything is written. Installed plugins
live per user under `<settings>/FigCraft/Plugins/<hash of id>/` and run in the same sandbox;
Remove deletes the folder.
- **Commands**: `plugin.directory.list {server?, query?}`, `plugin.directory.install {id, version?,
confirm, server?, sha256?}` (refused without `confirm: true`; never opens a dialog),
`plugin.directory.publish {path | plugin, server}`, `plugin.directory.unpublish {id, version?,
server}`. `ui.set {pluginsTab, pluginConfirm}` on the control channel.
- **CLI**: `figcraft-cli plugin publish FOLDER --server ws://host:port/` with the key from
`FIGCRAFT_SERVER_KEY` (or `?key=`), never printed.
- Docs: plugins.md (directories, publishing, commands, manifest), server.md (operating the
directory: access, checks, caps, moderation, backups, security), collab-protocol.md, mcp.md,
cli.md, control-protocol.md, target-app-parity area 18 and Ecosystem, ROADMAP, roadmap.md M11,
gaps.md gap 6. Plugins & widgets 55%/32% -> 60%/35%, 10-30 h -> 8-26 h.

M6: .fig import (best effort) (#132)
.fig files open through file.open, file.import, drag and drop, the dialogs, the CLI and MCP. A generic reader written from the public format description decodes the zip, the deflate/zstd chunks and the kiwi schema and message, then maps nodes by field name onto the REST importer: layer tree, geometry, paints with styles resolved, strokes, effects, text runs, vectors as outlines, auto layout including grid, constraints, components, sets, instances expanded from their main with overrides, styles, variables with modes and bindings, prototyping and image fills. Unsupported layers come back as warnings. Fuzzed; tested on fixtures generated in code. New dependency: ruzstd (pure-Rust zstd decoder). |

M3: components at scale; Alt-drag to swap instances (#91)
* M3: components at scale; Alt-drag to swap instances - Synthetic design system (engine `synthetic_ds`): ~300 components (icons; button, input, card, nav and badge sets of size x state x type x theme variants), boolean/text/instance swap/slot properties, instances nested four deep, text and paint styles, light/dark variables bound across it, and 2,000 instances with overrides at every level. - Propagation: value, size and added/removed-layer edits of mains reach their copies directly; other edits rebuild each affected instance once, inner mains first; rebuilds keep unchanged layers shared; bound variables no longer touch unchanged layers; auto layout re-flows only where sizes or places changed. - Fixes: values from variables (theme switches, bound radii) are no longer recorded as overrides; a detached variable on an instance layer is an override that survives main edits; exposed nested instances stay exposed; swapped nested instances keep their layer names and the ids/overrides of layers their own main adds; renamed nested instances keep their name when detached out. - Instance swap properties have preferred values. `instance.swapAt` / `library.swapAt` and Alt-drop from the Assets panel onto an instance swap it (highlighted while dragging). - Instances pasted into other files follow their mains (library copies shared, published components used from their library, other mains left behind as a missing main). - Assets panel lays out only visible tiles and renders thumbnails lazily with a cache invalidated per changed component; instance panel lists components once per revision. - `figcraft-cli perf --instances`, UI frame bench and tests in components_scale_tests. M6: PDF print options (bleed, marks, CMYK) (#92)
PDF export gains print options, saved on PDF export settings and taken by file.export, file.exportLayers, file.exportFramesPdf, export.add / export.update, figcraft-cli export and the MCP export tool: - a bleed (points or a length like 3mm / 0.125in, up to 2 in) that grows each page and shows what lies past the frame: its fills reach out to the bleed edge and its children are clipped there instead; a print page of one frame is trimmed to the frame's box; - crop and bleed marks: 0.25 pt hairlines outside the bleed in registration colour; - MediaBox / BleedBox / TrimBox; - CMYK colour: fills, strokes, text, gradient stops, images and rasterised effects converted from sRGB with the naive, deterministic K = 1 - max(R, G, B) formula; DeviceCMYK without an output intent (no CMYK ICC profile can ship in the repository), soft masks stay RGB. The Design panel shows a PDF row's print settings as a summary line that opens them; the Export dialog has print options for its PDF preset. Co-authored-by: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> |

M7: performance: retained canvas renders, virtual layers panel, shared text layouts, cargo xtask bench (#35)
Large documents stay interactive: the canvas re-renders only what a pan uncovers or an edit touches, the layers panel lays out only the rows in view, and per-frame work no longer walks the whole page. - Benchmark: `cargo xtask bench [SIZES]` builds synthetic pages (`figcraft_engine::synthetic`: screens with an auto layout header, a card group, button instances and shapes/text) at 1k/10k/50k layers and prints engine/render timings (`figcraft-cli perf --layers 1000,10000`) and headless whole-UI frame timings (an ignored ui-egui test). - Retained canvas rendering (`figcraft_render::Retained`, used by the render worker): views snap to whole device pixels, so a pan shifts the previous image in place and renders only the uncovered strips; an edit renders only where changed layers were and are (`Document::changed_ids` diffs the two versions skipping shared structure; ancestors that paint from their children's pixels - booleans, effects, masks - count whole; background blur reach and noise are allowed for). Zoom, page, options, font or page-level changes, or large changes, render the whole view as before. `ui.inspect` reports `canvas.renderWork`. - The texture image is converted on the render thread, not the UI thread. - Layers panel: only visible rows are laid out (stable ids while scrolling); rows are cached per document version, page, expanded set and filter. - Frame labels and layout grids of off-screen top-level frames are skipped; the Prototype tab's connection sources are cached per document version. - Text: the layout cache keys by a cheap fingerprint confirmed by `TextData` equality (no Debug formatting per lookup, 32k entries) and hands out shared layouts; a layout generation marks renders stale when fonts arrive. Overflowing text is culled by its glyphs, so it no longer vanishes while its box is off screen. Before -> after (release, Windows, 1440x900 view, ms; 10k / 50k layers): - move one layer, re-render @100%: 7.65 / 6.49 -> 0.18 / 0.81 - move one layer, re-render zoomed out: 11.95 / 24.10 -> 0.16 / 0.77 - pan 40 px @100%: 7.53 / 6.82 -> 0.69 / 0.81 - pan 40 px zoomed out: 12.07 / 24.30 -> 1.62 / 4.17 - full render @100% / zoomed to fit: 7.78 / 44.22 -> 6.56 / 38.83 (10k @100%, 50k fit) - UI frame, every screen expanded in layers: 6.16 / 39.07 -> 0.24 / 0.57 - UI frame, scrolling that panel: 6.11 / 40.18 -> 0.43 / 0.40 - UI frame, layers filtered by name: 1.03 / 6.92 -> 0.17 / 0.36 - UI frame, Prototype tab: 0.89 / 6.45 -> 0.18 / 0.80 - UI frame, idle: 0.31 / 1.43 -> 0.11 / 0.39 Unchanged and within budget: single-layer edits through the engine ~0.01 ms, normalize after a one-node edit < 0.01 ms, hit test 26 / 93 us. Left: save/load at 50k (~0.7 s each), zoomed-out renders at 50k (~40 ms). Tests: retained renders match full renders after pans, moves, recolours, hide/remove/add, undo, masks, overflowing text, edits under a background blur and an inner-shadow/noise layer, a drop- shadowed group, and a blur panned in from the view's edge; zoom/page/options/page background render full; junk views don't panic. Layer-row and prototype-source caches follow edits, undo, page switches, expansion and the filter. `changed_ids`, the text cache, and the perf CLI.
