Three small fixes from the review of the shadow commit:
- light_settings switched a Classic 3D comp to Advanced 3D whenever the
edited light was an Environment light (the resulting kind), so editing
the intensity of one in a comp the user had switched back to Classic 3D
dragged the renderer back. The switch now happens only on the
non-Environment to Environment transition (the sources before and
after), matching the docs; ordinary edits leave the renderer to the
user.
- dominant_direction's thresholds let NaN through (every NaN comparison
is false): a NaN or infinite texel produced a NaN sun direction and
NaN shading with it. A non-finite weight or length now returns no
direction — garbage casts no shadow.
- add_environment walked the full-resolution image for the dominant
direction even when the light casts no shadows, where nothing reads
it. Only a shadow-casting light pays for the pass now.
Tests: editing an existing Environment light in a Classic 3D comp keeps
the renderer and stays toast-silent; a NaN and an infinite environment
image yield no sun direction.
The Casts Shadows option Environment lights got is only half a fix if
nothing shades for it: an image lights the scene from every direction,
and what occludes that light is the image itself — its dominant bright
region, the sun in a sky map.
- dominant_direction finds it: the radiance-weighted mean texel
direction (solid-angle weighted, rotation applied). A uniform image
cancels to zero — a flat default environment shines from everywhere
at once and casts no shadow, which a uniform environment test pins.
- The shadow is one orthographic map over the scene from that
direction, after the lights' maps, like a parallel light's: PCF
widened by Shadow Diffusion, darkened by Shadow Darkness, cleared
when nothing casts, the image is directionless, or the texel budget
drops it.
- It darkens the environment's own diffuse and specular light on
Accepts Shadows surfaces and counts in Cast Shadows Only. CPU and
GPU (WGSL) do the same; Globals carries the environment's sun
direction and shadow settings (40 → 44 floats, preflight updated).
A bright-disc environment turned to shine from behind the camera now
shadows a sphere onto the floor behind it, Cast Shadows off lights it
evenly again, and the GPU scene's sky gradient takes a shadow-casting
Environment light. Also: the renderer-switch toasts read "...renderer,
which draws 3D models", the dialog's Casts Shadows checkbox gets an
auto id (dialog.light.casts) the tests click, and the docs' Environment
notes cover the shadow.
An Environment light had no visible effect, and its Light Settings dialog had
no Casts Shadows option — both halves of #2436.
No effect had two causes:
- Classic 3D (the default for new comps) skips Environment lights entirely,
so creating one did nothing. Adding one (or changing a light's type to it)
now switches the comp to Advanced 3D in the same undo step, with a toast,
exactly as model and primitive layers already do; switching back to
Classic 3D with an Environment light in the comp explains itself too.
- In Advanced 3D, a light with no Source and no Environment Layer produced no
environment at all. It now falls back to a flat default environment of the
light's colour × intensity, as After Effects does, so the light always
lights the scene per its parameters.
Cast Shadows was missing because the dialog and the light's property groups
shared one gate (Falloff and Shadows together) that excluded Environment.
The two are now split: every light but Ambient gets Casts Shadows, Shadow
Darkness and Shadow Diffusion (stored, edited and carried over on type
changes), while Falloff stays on Parallel/Spot/Point only — an environment
light shines from every direction at once and has no use for a falloff.
Tests: the renderer lights a card from a sourceless Environment light (colour
and intensity drive it, zero intensity lights nothing), the engine switches
Classic comps to Advanced 3D on creation and type change (one undo step,
toast, and the Classic 3D switch-back toast), Environment lights take and
carry shadow options but no Falloff, and the dialog ticks Casts Shadows on
a new Environment light.
A failing atomic batch restored the project, history and state but left the
events its steps had already published, so the UI could open the comp the
rollback had just undone. Snapshot the event count with the other snapshots and
truncate before the rollback bumps.

* Use chrono for UTC/calendar conversion instead of hand-rolled copies
Replaces the hand-rolled civil_from_days / days_from_civil copies (log
timestamp, ISO metadata dates, Align Video to Data timestamp parsing, the
Numbers effect's date, the Home and Render Queue date columns, and the
benchmark report date) with chrono as a workspace dependency. Output formats
are unchanged and pinned by the existing tests. AGENTS.md now says time goes
through chrono.
Follow-up to storytold/cadcraft#1785
* Keep 5-digit years unprefixed; derive Numbers weekday from the same date
chrono's %Y writes a '+' before years past 9999, where the old code wrote
{y:04}. timestamp, iso_date, format_utc, utc_stamp and xtask's utc now write
the year with {:04} again and let chrono format the rest, so a far-future
clock keeps the plain zero-padded year.
date_from_days took its weekday from the raw input modulo while the
year/month/day fell back to the epoch for day counts outside chrono's range,
so an unrepresentable count printed a fallback date paired with the input's
weekday. The weekday now comes from the same resolved date, so both agree.
Tests cover the year-10000 timestamp and the out-of-range Numbers date.
* Keep the whole date in format_ago for five-digit years
format_ago cut format_utc to 10 bytes, so a year past 9999 lost its last
digit (10000-01-0). Take the date up to the space instead. Tested.
* Keep Numbers dates exact past chrono's range
date_from_days converted the day count by building a Unix timestamp and
calling DateTime::from_timestamp, which falls back to the epoch (and so
reads 1970-01-01, a Thursday) once the date leaves chrono's NaiveDate
range near year ±262143. Numbers' `value` slider is a plain scalar with
no range guard, so a keyframed count reaches that: Long Date of
100_000_000 showed "Thursday, January 1, 1970" instead of the real
"Monday, September 13, 275790" -- exactly the plausible unrelated-date
fallback the review rejects, and the derived weekday matched the stand-in
date, not the input.
Route it through the 400-year Gregorian cycle like pdfcraft 9d4cb3ca:
chrono converts the day within one cycle (num_days_from_ce of the rebased
rest, always in range) and the whole cycles are added back as years, in
i128 so i64::MIN/MAX can't overflow. chrono stays the only calendar
logic. The weekday still comes from the resolved date, so it always
agrees with it.
Tested: date_from_days_past_chrono_range pins the pre-chrono dates and
weekdays at/over chrono's bound on both sides of the 2000-01-01 epoch
(and that the extremes don't overflow); numbers_formats adds the same
through the public numbers_text entry (Long/Short Date). cargo test
-p effectcraft-effects, fmt --check and clippy -D warnings all clean.
* time: preserve out-of-range years instead of the epoch
`DateTime::from_timestamp(..).unwrap_or_default()` changed the existing output:
inputs the old hand-rolled civil-from-days converted (e.g. `10_000_000_000_000`
s → 318857-05-20 17:46:40) collapsed to the epoch. Restore the old conversion
domain with a cycle-based helper: reduce by whole 400-year Gregorian cycles
(146_097 days), convert the in-range remainder with chrono, and carry the year
back as i128 (saturating to the output type). Only the year leaves chrono's
range; month, day and time of day stay exact. chrono remains the only calendar
logic (NaiveDate::from_num_days_from_ce_opt); no new features.

* Name the 400-year range extension as the one exception to the time rule
The rule said never to hand-roll calendar math, but the range fix
(shifting by whole 400-year Gregorian cycles so dates past chrono's year
range keep their old output) is cycle arithmetic, so the rule and the code
disagreed. The rule now names that exception: the library still computes
month, day and time, and only whole cycles are carried in the year.
* Say the library computes month and day; time-of-day is plain arithmetic
Narrows the range-extension wording: the date library computes the
calendar fields, and splitting seconds into hours, minutes and seconds
is ordinary arithmetic, which is what the code does.
While a text layer was being edited, Edit > Deselect All and its shortcuts
selected every character (or did nothing) instead of ending the edit and
deselecting the layer.
- deselect_all now commits the open edit first, through the same route as
text.endEdit: a created-but-empty type-tool layer is discarded, anything
typed is kept, and no extra undo step is introduced.
- While the in-canvas editor holds the keyboard, the editor forwards the
command's currently assigned shortcut (and any function-key chord) so
Deselect All reaches the command from the comp; bare-letter bindings stay
typing, and Select All still selects characters.
- The Project-panel focus redirects (invocation and menu enabled-ness) stand
down while a text edit is open, so the menu and shortcut end the edit even
when focus stayed on Project after Layer > New > Text.
Tests: three engine cases (commit + discard semantics), six UI kittest cases
(chords, F2, rebinding, menu enabled-ness, Project focus), RED at base.
Reload Footage probed every item the way File ▸ Import does by default,
so a still such as Photo_2.jpg with Photo_1.jpg beside it was grouped
into a run and measured from the run's first file. The still took
Photo_1's size. Sequence items still probe as a run; everything else
reads its one file.

file.projectSettings takes frameStart (0|1), the Project Settings dialog shows Frame Count, and scripts get app.project.framesCountType and displayStartFrame. The setting was already read by the Frames and Feet + Frames time display; nothing could change it.
Nothing cleared a `Value::Layer` reference when its layer was deleted, so the id stayed behind:
`env_pixels` resolved it to nothing and rendered no environment at all, while the UI showed "None",
which is documented as "fall back to the comp's Environment Layer". The delete path already
unparents children and drops a track matte that pointed at a deleted layer; a layer reference now
goes the same way, in the same history step, so undo restores the layer and the reference together.
This covers every layer-reference property, not only an Environment light's Source: 73 of them
across the effects (Clone Source, Set Matte, Back Layer, Water Surface, Sky, Ground…). Keyframes
carry the same value kind as the property, as in `essential.rs`, and are fixed too.

OK runs layer.newPrimitive, which switches a Classic 3D comp to Advanced 3D in the same undo step. The dimension fields are the Geometry Options the engine builds for the chosen type.
- English (and Auto where offered) stays first as the source language and fallback; the rest sort by native name with accents folded, so Čeština is under C and Magyar under M; Cyrillic and CJK names follow the Latin ones
- The list used the registry order, which is the order the languages were added
Session::bump took the disk cache's footage salt at every edit, which reads the size and time of
every footage file, each frame of an image sequence included. With three 5000-frame sequences a
caret move or a typed character in a text field took ~0.6 s on the UI thread (9 ms with the disk
cache off). The salt is now taken again only when the footage items changed, or when a project
is opened, footage is reloaded or the disk cache attached.

Alt/Option-drag a Project item onto a Timeline layer, or press Ctrl+Alt+/ (Cmd+Opt+/) with layers and an item selected, to swap the layer's source. The layer keeps its name, timing, transforms, keyframes, expressions, effects, masks, switches, parenting and track matte; a source with audio adds Audio properties when missing. Precompositions can't be nested inside themselves.
AVLayer.replaceSource now runs the same engine command and closes the replaceSource part of #813.
The Timeline draws the Video switch (the eye) on every layer's row, nulls,
cameras and lights included, but set_switch_others and hide_other_video
skipped cameras and lights: Alt-clicking the eye of a selected layer neither
set them apart with the selection nor hid them with the rest.
Both now use the rule the eye cell shows: every layer but track mattes.
At preview scales from 0.75 to 1 footage keeps native pixels, a proxy sets
its own buffer scale at any render scale, a Preserve Resolution precomp is
drawn at full size, and earlier effects can pad or offset the buffer, so
snapping to the preview grid could pick a different ID than the rendered
matte. Use the scale and offset of the buffer the Cryptomatte effect
receives (layer_input, rendered once and then cached).
The pixel centre goes to an aux point through effectcraft_effects::aux_point,
which index_map_at now calls too, so the two round identically (a division
vs the reciprocal picked the other ID on a 104 px proxy of 1920 px footage).
An unknown effect uid errors "no such effect" and a layer without pixels
"this layer has no pixels", as effect.pickColor does.
Engine part of viewer picking: replace / add / remove the top-coverage ID at a
layer-space point in one undo step, at the time the Selection was read. The
aux channels come from the render's own path (Renderer::layer_aux, shared with
the effect host; footage at its source time, 3D precomps) through a renderer
set up like Session::render (expressions, render prefs, layer cache). An
optional scale snaps the point to the pixel a preview at that resolution
samples. New effects::crypto_select quotes names and falls back to <hex> for
unnamed, wildcard-looking or ambiguous names. effect.cryptomatteAt is the
read-only hover query.
