A Flex Layout container is a frame holding its objects as nested items
(as Edit › Paste Into makes), with a `flex` record: direction, wrap,
justification, cross-axis alignment, Fixed/Auto width and height, padding
and horizontal/vertical spacing. designcraft_doc::flex lays the objects
out (a Flexbox subset: lines, justification, alignment, Auto sizing), and
the engine runs it after every edit, so the container keeps its objects
in place whatever changes.
Commands: flex.add (Add to Flex Layout; detects aligned objects: their
direction, Auto size, Space Between at their own spacing, as InDesign
does), flex.convert (a group or rectangle frame), flex.remove (objects
stay, grouped), flex.set (every panel setting, plus the alignment grid
cell), flex.reorder. Resizing a container by its handles or W/H changes
its box and makes that side Fixed instead of scaling its objects;
dragging an object inside one drops it in the nearest place.
UI: Object › Flex Layout (Add to, Convert to, Remove, Show Flex Controls),
a Flex Layout panel (Window › Panels) laid out as InDesign's (Create Flex
Layout; alignment grid, W/H with Auto/Fixed; justification menu, four
directions, wrap; padding with the link button; spacing, greyed as
InDesign does when the justification works it out or nothing wraps), and
the same section in Properties. Icons are new drawings.

Typing into a text frame never turned on the OS input method, so macOS
dead keys didn't compose: ⌥E then I typed "ei" instead of "í" (same for
⌥N, ⌥U and Japanese/Chinese input). The canvas now asks for the input
method while the Type tool has a caret and handles its events.
The text being composed shows in the story as an interaction preview
(new `text.compose` command), so it takes the format the next typed
character gets, drawn on a yellow box. On commit it's dropped and the
result typed with `text.insert` (one undo step); any other edit, tool
change or drag drops it first and tells the input method to forget it.

Add multi-click text selection, pending caret formatting and clipboard support, text-aware colour controls, guide/grid snapping, and frame threading with loaded-port interactions.
Include the layout, drop-cap and IDML updates carried from #83, with safeguards for generated and linked stories, external text references, local IDs, locked frames and atomic colour edits.

The Links panel lists links about twice a second, and each listing
hashed every linked text file. A linked text file now also remembers
its modification time (as Data Merge does for its source, through the
same size-and-time fingerprint): while size and time match, it isn't
read. A different size is Modified without reading. When only the time
changed, the content hash still decides (a file saved or synced again
without changes stays OK), and the session remembers that check by
size and time, so the next poll doesn't read the file again. Update and
Relink record the size and time from before their read. Test: polls of
an unchanged file don't read it (it is made unreadable), a touched but
unchanged file is read once and stays OK, a changed file is Modified.

The scan now reads crates/*/src instead of only the engine, and flags fs::
after use std::fs or use std::{fs, ...}, std::fs, File::open/create,
OpenOptions, direct atomic writes and the Path probes (metadata,
symlink_metadata, canonicalize, read_dir, try_exists, exists, is_file, is_dir,
read_link). The files it leaves out are listed with the reason for each, and a
second test fails when an entry no longer needs its exception.
Keep recovered snapshots available through a second crash before autosave. Track checkpoint ownership across folders and restarted IDs; Save, Close and Revert clean only checkpoints owned by that document.
Follow-up to #506 and the retention concern in #380.
PR #616.
File > Place of a text file with `link: true`, or with the new
Preferences > File Handling > Create Links When Placing Text Files,
records on the story the file's path, size and hash, and the style map
and style-conflict option used. The Links panel and links.list show
these files OK / Modified / Missing like graphics. links.update imports
a modified file again into the same frames and thread with the saved
style map (Auto Rename's choices are kept, so no new _wrd_ styles). As
in InDesign, edits made in the layout are replaced: the Links panel and
Window > Links > Update Link ask first (Update / Cancel) when a linked
story was edited in the layout, while the links.update command updates
and returns a warning, as InDesign scripting does. links.relink,
links.goTo and links.embed (Unlink) take {story}. Saved in the native
format; IDML writes the text unlinked. Tracked changes import as
accepted, as before. Tests cover place-with-link, Modified/Missing
status, update with the saved style map keeping frames, the
local-edits warning, the confirmation dialog (confirm, cancel, no
dialog for unedited stories), relink, unlink, the preference, and a
native save/load round trip. Closes#597.

type.selectionAttrs reports the start of the selected text on one line
(`selectedText`, up to 60 characters), for previews such as the font
menu's Selected Text sample. The preferences keep `recentFonts`, the
fonts last picked in the font menus.

Replace native engine saves and engine/MCP exports atomically, preserving private permissions during staging and cleaning up failed writes. Add regressions for long filenames and caught writer unwinding.

File › Place (native picker, browser import, Place with Import Options
and the PDF page dialog) passes loadCursor to file.place. With no empty
or graphic frame selected and no x/y given, an image is added to the
document and loaded into the place cursor instead of landing in a new
frame on the first spread; a click places it at its natural size, a drag
draws its frame. The loaded graphic keeps the chosen PDF page and crop
box. Escape or choosing another tool unloads the cursor. Dropped files
and file.place without loadCursor behave as before.
Resolve conflicts keeping both sides: doc gains both `cjk` and
`datamerge` modules; file.open resolves data-merge sources and loads the
document's fonts; DocState keeps preview_stash/preview_record and fonts.

Font menus list Western (and other-script) families first, then
Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean families,
each group alphabetical by the name shown, with a separator between
groups. The group comes from the font's own data, strongest signal
first: the meta table's dlng (else slng) languages, family names in a
CJK language (Windows and Macintosh language IDs), OS/2 code pages (JIS,
Chinese Simplified, Korean Wansung, Chinese Traditional, Korean Johab);
a font declaring none of these goes by what it covers (kana, Hangul,
ideographs). Ties go Japanese, Simplified, Traditional, Korean. Loaded faces are classified
once; installed fonts by the font scan, which also reads their OS/2 and
meta tables (and cmap only for fonts declaring nothing), capped.
CJK families show their family name in their language, the English
name on hover; Preferences > Type > Show Font Names in English
(prefs.set {showFontNamesInEnglish}, off by default) shows English
names. Search matches either name; documents store the English name.
The Character panel, Control bar, Properties, style dialogs, Find Font
and Glyphs panel lists all follow this order. The main font menu stays
open while searching or starring (it closed on any click inside).
Font previews don't draw DesignCraft's missing-glyph box for fonts
whose .notdef is empty.
The fonts in a document's Document Fonts folder are registered under a
font scope that the document holds while it is open (Document::font_scope,
runtime only; DocState keeps the scope alive and closes it when the last
copy of the state goes: file.close, closing a tab, revert, a book
chapter's export, the session ending). Composition, preflight, font.list,
Package and the font menus, Glyphs panel and previews look fonts up
through FontDb::scoped(scope): the document's own faces first, then the
shared ones. Other open documents don't see them, and two documents with
fonts of the same name each set text in their own. Composite fonts'
member fonts and the fallback for kenten marks are looked up the same
way.
Font files stay in memory for the session (FaceRef keeps faces for the
process); a document opened again reuses the faces of its unchanged files
(same path, length and modification time) instead of reading them again.
The composition cache's signature includes the scope; the word cache and
the outline and PDF font caches are keyed by face. Variable font
instances are kept per base face.
A family's installed faces join the shared fonts all at once, and a
face two lookups load at the same time is kept once, so a parallel
fallback lookup never takes a family's bold before its regular has
loaded.
Select, update, and remove a linked source. Placeholders cover text,
images, QR codes, and hyperlinks. Preview fills one record in the
session and is left out of save and recovery. Merge copies the template
into a new document, one record per page, or tiles frames on a single
non-facing page. A missing or changed file is marked and the cached
rows are still used. The template undo stack is left as it was.
A command that documents ids (object.textFrameOptions, transform.rotate, ...)
acts on the objects a call names, yet its enabled check looked only at the
selection. With a text caret or nothing selected, {"ids": [5]} failed with:
command `object.textFrameOptions` is not available right now: nothing selected
Execute now lets such a call through when every named object exists, and
says "no object with id N" when one doesn't. transform.set, object.arrange
and edit.stepAndRepeat, which already acted on ids, now document them.

Session::execute runs each command inside catch_unwind: a panic that escapes
(any edit, import or export, from the UI, CLI, MCP or control channel)
becomes EngineError::Internal, the document and selection are restored to
before the command, and crash recovery is saved when enabled. The first
Session installs a panic hook that logs the message and location.

Commands return errors instead of expect()/unreachable!() (book, library,
undo/redo, paste, find/replace, Pathfinder, tables, QR, select, swatches,
anchors, articles, transform again, XML import). The sample document builder
propagates errors. Commands that add a key to their parameters no longer
panic when a caller (control channel, MCP, script) passes an array or a
string, and corrupt crash-recovery metadata is ignored. engine, mcp and
tools now deny unwrap/expect/panic/unimplemented/todo/unreachable.

The active layer lives on DocState, outside the undo snapshots, and
nothing re-checked it when the document's layers changed. After New
Layer → Undo (or Delete Layer / Delete Unused Layers / Merge Layers on
the active layer) it kept pointing at a layer that no longer exists, and
every object created next (frames, lines, placed images, pasted items)
was put on that phantom layer: not drawn on the canvas, missing from PDF
export, ItemLayer referencing an undefined layer in IDML, and preflight
reported nothing.
After each command, if the active layer is gone, make the top layer
active (as on opening a document).
Test: active_layer_survives_undoing_new_layer.
