The Story Editor has a vertical depth ruler between the style column
and the text. It is marked in the document's vertical ruler units with
how deep the story's text fills its frames, counted through its
columns and threaded frames, and it is shaded down to the overset
point. Paragraph spacing adds to the depth. Lines set side by side, in
the sub-columns of a split paragraph or on both sides of a wrap
object, count once. Where several marks fall on one editor row, only
the deepest is drawn. A red line crosses the text, and the ruler when
it shows, above the first character that does not fit.
View › Story Editor › Show/Hide Depth Ruler (view.storyEditorDepthRuler)
shows or hides the ruler in the Story Editor, for every story opened in
it. The ruler is shown by default, and the setting is saved with the
preferences.
* EPUB: Split Document in a paragraph style's Export Tagging
* EPUB: Split Document as a document setting (off, one style, or export tags)
The document stores EPUB Export Options › Split Document (DocSettings.epub_split):
off (one content file, the default), a single paragraph style, or the
paragraph styles' Export Tagging › Split Document flags. document.epubSplit sets
it as one undo step; file.exportEpub takes a split that overrides it for one
export. A Style setting follows a renamed style and a deleted style's
replacement. IDML reads and writes EPubExportPreference BreakDocument and
ParagraphStyleName. A split before a list item or preformatted line closes the
open list or block first, so each content file is balanced.
* EPUB Export Options dialog with Split Document before Export EPUB
File › Export EPUB… opens EPUB Export Options, seeded from the document's
Split Document setting: a Split Document checkbox with Single Paragraph Style
(and its style) or Based on Paragraph Style Export Tags. OK stores a changed
setting through document.epubSplit, then continues to the save dialog; Cancel
does nothing. app.exportEpub with a path skips the dialog. Docs and the
progress log describe the setting.
* EPUB: the navigation test exports one content file with Split Document off
* EPUB export from the menu passes its options (cover, split) to the engine
* EPUB: Split Document on a style's EPUB tag map counts when the style says false; a caller's cover: false stays
Gap 19 now states in one sentence that DesignCraft does not apply retained IDML
graphic-layer visibility to raster or PDF output, so it no longer reads as contradicting
placed-PDF layer choices, which are applied. The placed-PDF doc records that parent-page
and anchored placements get variants, and what a package's IDML copy cannot carry.
Preserve contributor commits and adapt optional-content registration and table-cell graphic calls to the current PDF exporter refactors. Keep current-main roadmap corrections.
All nine cargo xtask ci gates passed on tree d0c21f347e: 3209 tests passed, 6 skipped, 16 WASM-safe crates. The exact PR head also passed 118 PDF unit/integration tests. Independent production-export controls: 8 flat/null cases succeeded; 7 unreadable Prev values refused, 4 compatibility controls succeeded; all 12 emitted PDFs pass qpdf.
This PR is independent of the format-v4 pair (#1647/#1671), which remains held for a reproduced parent-placement IDML issue.
- Panels dock through craft-ui's shared docking. On desktop, a floating
panel opens in its own OS window (feature native-windows); the web
build keeps floats in the page.
- Keys pressed in a floating window run the main window's shortcuts,
clipboard and tool keys in the same frame.
- A default layout's floating windows keep their ids.
- The canvas paints no tool cursor while another of the app's windows
has the pointer, and a pointer beside a float stays the canvas's.
- Story joins Glyphs in the default icon column.
The new command note.split {story, id, at} splits an editorial note at
byte `at` of its text. The note keeps the text before that point, and
the rest moves into a new note by the same author whose anchor directly
follows the first one. A split point at the start or end of the text,
or inside a character, is refused. The Notes panel shows each note's
text in a read-only field, and its Split Note button splits the note at
the insertion point in that field.
* Type: story Optical Margin Alignment with a size, and Ignore Optical Margin (engine, IDML)
A story's Optical Margin Alignment applies to every paragraph except those
with Ignore Optical Margin; hang amounts scale with the story's size.
story.options sets it, type.para and paragraph styles take
ignoreOpticalMargin. IDML imports and exports StoryPreference
OpticalMarginAlignment/OpticalMarginSize and IgnoreEdgeAlignment. The
per-paragraph opticalMargin switch keeps hanging at the text's own size.
Part of #947.
* Type: the Story panel, and Ignore Optical Margin in the Paragraph panel menu and Paragraph Style Options
Window > Type & Tables > Story sets Optical Margin Alignment and its size
for the stories of the text selection or the selected text frames through
story.options, and is disabled without either. type.selectionAttrs
reports the stories' values as storyOptions, null where they differ.
The Paragraph panel menu toggles ignoreOpticalMargin, and Paragraph Style
Options > Indents and Spacing has an Ignore Optical Margin checkbox.
Part of #947.
* ROADMAP: the story Optical Margin Alignment entry names its default and scope
Merge upstream/main 4be45a71, preserving German 2006 hyphenation. Keep current documentation summaries, both progress histories, and the new cross-column hyphenation behavior description.
Validation: fmt, PDF dependency checks, workspace Clippy, layers and German hyphenation tests pass. Full CI stops at four known Windows engine test failures in unchanged upstream paths and directory-redirect checks.
skylartaylor's review: a PDF can list readable layers yet fail the visibility
rewrite. On a synthetic 33-section xref history, object.layerOptions with
useDefaults:false and an empty hidden list was accepted (only hidden names
triggered #1670's rewrite check), the canvas could not draw the choice and
PDF export then failed.
Every explicit choice now runs one actual pdf_hide_layers rewrite per
distinct source before any item is edited or undo is recorded; this subsumes
the separate layerless check. Resetting to file defaults (useDefaults:true
or the legacy empty list) needs no variant and bypasses the check. #1670's
fail-closed canvas handling is kept alongside the explicit-override state: a
stored explicit choice (including all-on) whose source can no longer be
rewritten draws nothing rather than the unmodified source, and export errors.
The new regression test fails before this change (the all-on request is
accepted) and covers both selection orders, atomicity, undo depth, reset
bypass and the stale all-on fail-closed path.

skylartaylor's review: #1647 and #1671 each introduced native format 4 for a
different capability, so a reader that understood only one could accept a
file carrying the other and silently drop its settings. No release has shipped
v4 (main and v0.12.0 still write at most 3), so v4 is defined as one
capability covering both retained placed-graphic layer options and explicit
all-on PDF layer choices; #1671 is stacked on this branch.
Move the version choice into required_version so every new capability is
decided in one place, document the shared v4 contract on VERSION, and test
that plain, EPS-only and layer-option documents keep 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

The new command note.convertFromText removes the selected story text
and puts it into a new editorial note whose anchor sits where the text
was. It takes an optional author, and Convert Note to Text puts the text
back. DesignCraft refuses a selection in a table cell, or one that holds
a note, footnote, endnote, anchored object, index marker, text anchor,
cross-reference or table, and leaves the story unchanged. The item
follows New Note in Type › Notes, with translations in the catalogs that
already translate Convert Note to Text.
Keep source defaults and per-frame hidden layers in plain and PDF/X-4 vector exports, including independent repeated placements, booklet output and book merging. Accept usage-application arrays and resource-only groups without a catalog configuration.
Use file-named warnings and all-ON defaults for recoverable default-configuration problems and unsupported base states. Add readable groups omitted from OCGs without discarding their visibility, combine concurrent recovery warnings, and generate missing names only when no frame override needs name matching. Retain errors for contradictory states, unresolved references and ambiguous name overrides.
Cache prepared variants per asset and hidden-name set while replaying recovery warnings through the existing deduplicating channel. Keep original source bytes when every group is visible and named, so reader-repaired cross-reference tables remain usable without an incremental layer update. When hidden groups or generated names require writing, reject an unusable cross-reference table with a file-named damage error and retain the first placement failure.
Cover visibility, recovery, names, independent placements, repaired cross-reference tables and vector output with 46 optional-content integration tests, plus preparation-cache and shared-buffer unit tests.
File › File Info… opens a dialog with Document Title, Author,
Description, Keywords, Copyright Notice and Copyright Info URL, and the
document saves them. The new file.info command reads them with {} and
sets the fields it is given; "" or null clears a field, and keywords
are a list or one line split at semicolons and commas. file.info.get
returns the fields without editing the document, so opening the dialog
does not end a Data Merge preview.
Export PDF, PDF/X-4 and Print Booklet write the title, author,
description and keywords into the PDF's document information and XMP.
EPUB export takes the title and author from File Info, and HTML export
takes the title. A title or author given to the export replaces File
Info's, and an empty Document Title leaves the document's name as the
title. Export PDF's dialog no longer sends the document's name as the
PDF title, so the PDF takes its title from File Info; the file name
still comes from the document's name.
