Montilla Design's Flex Layout file names its body face "Regular " (with a
trailing space, as the designer's copy of Articulat CF did). Face lookup
already ignores spacing and case, so the text is drawn in Regular, but
font.list (Find Font) compared names exactly and reported the style
missing. It now uses the lookup's comparison (designcraft_fonts::same_style).

A Typography panel (Window ▸ Show Panel, and the icon column) lists the
features of the selected text's fonts, merged over those fonts, grouped as
Ligatures, Alternates, Stylistic Sets (named by the font), Figure Style,
Figure Width, Figure Position and Capitals. A section or choice appears only
when a font offers it.
Each feature is a checkbox: checked when all of the selection has it, a dash
when only some of it does, empty when none does. A feature only some of the
selection's fonts offer is italic. Mutually exclusive choices are checkboxes
too, and choosing one turns the others off.
type.openTypeFeatures reports each feature's applied and available state over
the selection. type.feature turns features on or off across the selection,
keeping each run's other features. The fonts crate reads GSUB and GPOS
feature lists and stylistic set names.
The Character panel's OpenType menu is now a button that opens or focuses the
Typography panel.

Add multi-click text selection, pending caret formatting and clipboard support, text-aware colour controls, guide/grid snapping, and frame threading with loaded-port interactions.
Include the layout, drop-cap and IDML updates carried from #83, with safeguards for generated and linked stories, external text references, local IDs, locked frames and atomic colour edits.
Fixes#23.

Malayalam took the first installed file mapping it: on macOS Arial Unicode MS, which has no Malayalam shaping, so conjuncts like ക്ഷ fell apart. Fonts made for Malayalam are tried first, loaded on demand through the CJK chain lookup.
Rebased onto the atomic save work: book chapter replacement, canonicalize and
the writability probe, and every command write now check the roots before
they reach crate::atomic. IDML import no longer reads linked images itself
(the engine passes its checked reader), load_icc_file is gone (profiles
arrive as bytes), the script loader goes through the host reader, and
FontDb::load_document_fonts asks a caller-supplied check about the folder and
each font file, so a link that leads out of the read root is skipped.
ScopedFonts::family_kind reads a family's format, class, PANOSE and file
date from its Regular face. A loaded face is asked; an installed family
that isn't loaded is read from its file, which is let go afterwards,
instead of loading every family the font menu's filters look at for the
rest of the session. Files over MAX_DOCUMENT_FONT_BYTES are skipped.

Each face reports what InDesign's font menu shows and filters by, read
once from its tables: its format (TrueType, OpenType/CFF, variable,
colour), its class (serif, slab serif, sans serif, script, monospaced,
decorative, symbol) from PANOSE, else the OS/2 IBM family class, else
the family name, else the shape of its "l" (serifs widen the foot), its
PANOSE numbers (with a distance for similar fonts) and when its file
was added.

A font-family that names no family but matches a face's PostScript name
(as Illustrator's SVG export writes them, e.g. 'MyriadPro-Regular') now
sets the text in that face, from the bundled, loaded or installed fonts.
The name picks the face, so font-weight and font-style don't change it.
Family names and the generic fallbacks resolve as before.

- install_fonts no longer waits for the system font catalog on the first
frame: the built-in faces are installed at once, the scan runs in the
background, and the installed CJK faces are added when it is done.
- The installed faces are read once and shared: changing the interface
language reorders them without copying the font files into egui again.
- fonts: line_metrics no longer sits between feature's doc comment and
feature.

Without the craft-fonts build input the interface had no CJK glyphs:
egui can't find system fonts, so Japanese and Chinese menus and labels
drew as boxes, and Korean and Traditional Chinese font names in the
font menus did in every build.
- The first installed UI face of each script (Japanese, Simplified
Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean; macOS, Windows and Linux
families) is added as a fallback for the scripts craft-fonts doesn't
cover.
- A fallback face sits on the UI face's baseline: egui centres a
fallback's line height in the primary's, so a CJK face with a taller
ascent or a line gap sat above or below the Latin text beside it.
The tweak is computed from the two faces' line metrics.
- The interface language's script comes first, before the built-in CJK
faces, so Han characters take that language's forms.

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_013phQ3ekq6uGBEWD6FjFYG2
IDML names some languages by locale code
(AppliedLanguage="$ID/de_DE_2006", "$ID/nl_NL_2005") beside names such
as "English: USA" and "Spanish: Castilian". language_tag maps any locale
code (ll, ll_CC, ll-CC, with a reform year after them) to its BCP 47 tag
(de-DE, nl-NL; kept once per process, at most 512 distinct tags), ignores
IDML's $ID/ prefix, and knows Spanish: Castilian (es-ES) and Swiss French
and Italian. The stored name stays as written, so IDML round trips are
unchanged.
What depends on the language now goes by the tag: typographer's quotes
(by language subtag; Swiss regions take guillemets), English
hyphenation and spelling (is_english), Korean word breaking and the CJK
fallback chains (ja-JP, ko-KR are Japanese and Korean whatever the
region).
Font menus list Western (and other-script) families first, then
Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Korean families,
each group alphabetical by the name shown, with a separator between
groups. The group comes from the font's own data, strongest signal
first: the meta table's dlng (else slng) languages, family names in a
CJK language (Windows and Macintosh language IDs), OS/2 code pages (JIS,
Chinese Simplified, Korean Wansung, Chinese Traditional, Korean Johab);
a font declaring none of these goes by what it covers (kana, Hangul,
ideographs). Ties go Japanese, Simplified, Traditional, Korean. Loaded faces are classified
once; installed fonts by the font scan, which also reads their OS/2 and
meta tables (and cmap only for fonts declaring nothing), capped.
CJK families show their family name in their language, the English
name on hover; Preferences > Type > Show Font Names in English
(prefs.set {showFontNamesInEnglish}, off by default) shows English
names. Search matches either name; documents store the English name.
The Character panel, Control bar, Properties, style dialogs, Find Font
and Glyphs panel lists all follow this order. The main font menu stays
open while searching or starring (it closed on any click inside).
Font previews don't draw DesignCraft's missing-glyph box for fonts
whose .notdef is empty.
A character the applied font lacks is drawn as that font's missing-glyph
box (its .notdef, gid 0), on screen and in PDF, and Preflight lists the
characters by font ("Missing glyphs in <family> <style>: …", an error,
at most 20 named). A .notdef without an outline is drawn as a hollow box
across its advance, so a missing character never disappears. PDF draws
.notdef glyphs as paths, which PDF/A and PDF/UA accept. Kenten marks are
set in their text's font the same way.
The document setting Draw Missing Glyphs from Fallback Fonts
(DocSettings::glyph_fallback; Preferences > Composition,
document.preferences {glyphFallback}, undoable) draws them from fallback
fonts instead (the language-aware chains, then any font; kenten marks
from a fallback font, else a bullet). It is off in new documents and
IDML imports and on in files saved before it existed, which keep
drawing as they did. A missing font's substitute always uses fallback
fonts. The composition cache's signature includes the setting. Tests
whose Arabic comes from a fallback font turn the setting on.
The fonts in a document's Document Fonts folder are registered under a
font scope that the document holds while it is open (Document::font_scope,
runtime only; DocState keeps the scope alive and closes it when the last
copy of the state goes: file.close, closing a tab, revert, a book
chapter's export, the session ending). Composition, preflight, font.list,
Package and the font menus, Glyphs panel and previews look fonts up
through FontDb::scoped(scope): the document's own faces first, then the
shared ones. Other open documents don't see them, and two documents with
fonts of the same name each set text in their own. Composite fonts'
member fonts and the fallback for kenten marks are looked up the same
way.
Font files stay in memory for the session (FaceRef keeps faces for the
process); a document opened again reuses the faces of its unchanged files
(same path, length and modification time) instead of reading them again.
The composition cache's signature includes the scope; the word cache and
the outline and PDF font caches are keyed by face. Variable font
instances are kept per base face.
A family's installed faces join the shared fonts all at once, and a
face two lookups load at the same time is kept once, so a parallel
fallback lookup never takes a family's bold before its regular has
loaded.
FontFace::v_advance, v_origin and em_box read vmtx/vhea, VORG (else the
glyph top plus its top side bearing) and the ideographic em box (BASE
ideo/idtp, else OS/2 typo metrics, else ascender/descender, centred on one
em); fonts without them fall back to the em box. shape_vertical shapes
top to bottom with those metrics (vert, and vkrn/vpal when asked).
Opening a .designcraft or .idml file from disk (file.open, file.openIdml,
book chapters, recovered documents) loads the fonts in the "Document
Fonts" folder beside it. Their faces come before installed faces of the
same family and style. The files are untrusted: at most 200 are read,
256 MB each (full CJK collections fit) and 512 MB in all; files over a
limit by their listed length are skipped unread, and damaged, oversized
and surplus files are listed in the open result's warnings. Document fonts stay
loaded for the session (the font database is process-wide).
Faces record their source (bundled, installed file, document file,
memory); font.list reports it. File > Package copies the font files the
document uses into the package's Document Fonts folder unless OS/2
fsType restricts the licence, and the report says which fonts weren't
copied and why.
Characters the primary font lacks try a fallback chain by language
before the language-blind search: Japanese (the craft-fonts Japanese
faces first, Mincho first), Simplified Chinese (also plain Chinese),
Traditional Chinese and Korean each list their macOS, Windows and Linux
system families. Hangul, kana and Bopomofo pick their language's chain
whatever the character language; ideographs and CJK punctuation follow
it, and keep today's fallback without a CJK language. Chain families
load from the system font catalog the first time they are needed.
designcraft_fonts::testing (feature `testing`) builds synthetic fonts
with a given family name and coverage for tests.
The character's language (as IDML names it) maps to a BCP 47 tag
(designcraft_doc::language_tag) and is the shaping context's language
on the harfrust buffer, so OpenType locl applies for every language in
the list (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Turkish, ...), not only Arabic,
Persian, Urdu, Hebrew and English: other names used to reach the
shaper as they were written, which it doesn't know, so their locl never
applied. designcraft_fonts no longer maps names itself. The word-shaping
cache is keyed by the tag. Chinese: Simplified and Chinese: Traditional
join the language list (plain Chinese stays, tagged zh); Simplified
Chinese takes curly quotes, Traditional Chinese corner brackets.
Port the CJK1 and AR1 changes from 3ecdb78 and de83cdc onto current main. Resolve translation and font-stack conflicts by retaining main localization and craft-fonts integration while preserving all typesetting code, tests, and documentation.
Validation: all six CI gates passed, including 616 tests and WASM checks.
Shippori Mincho (8.7 MB) and its licence leave assets/fonts. Japanese fonts now
come from storytold/craft-fonts when built with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR (never a
Cargo.toml dependency): crates/fonts/build.rs embeds its manifest as
designcraft_fonts::CRAFT_FONTS. Native builds embed all four fonts; wasm32
embeds BIZ UDPGothic Regular only (web size budget).
- UI (egui): the Jpan faces at the end of every family, BIZ UDPGothic first
(Bold first in the semibold family).
- Documents: FontDb loads them after the bundled fonts, Mincho first, so they
are the Japanese fallback ahead of system fonts; SVG text gets them too.
- Vertical alternates test runs on every craft-fonts face and skips when
CRAFT_FONTS is empty; new UI no-tofu test and without-craft-fonts tests.
- FreeBSD CI tests with craft-fonts; release.yml builds every platform with
CRAFT_FONTS_DIR + CRAFT_FONTS_REQUIRED=1 at a pinned commit, packages carry
OFL-<family>.txt; NOTICE, ASSETS.md, AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md, README, ROADMAP.

FontDb cataloged the system fonts only when a character needed a fallback
(nothing else calls load_system_fonts), so a document set in an installed
family was composed in Source Sans 3, and font.list and preflight reported
the family missing (#22).
Every lookup by family name now waits for one scan of the font folders per
session, as VectorCraft does since #130: the app starts the scan in the
background at startup, other processes run it on first use. The scan reads
only each file's table directory and name table, and skips folders it has
already read, so a symlink loop can't hang it. has_family counts installed
families. FontDb::with_font_dirs and system_font_dirs let tests use their
own font folder.

The UI theme included the 8.7 MB font a second time; it now uses
designcraft_fonts::JAPANESE_FALLBACK (release binary 72 MB -> 63 MB).
The ROADMAP note joins the Interface language entry.

An .xlsx cell reference far from the others no longer allocates the whole
range before the cell cap (billions of cells, out of memory), and long
column names can't overflow. IDML import doesn't trust zip part sizes for
up-front allocation and adds header/footer counts saturating. Tagged Text
and IDML export use let-else; the font fallback has a compiled-in last
resort. These crates deny the panicking lints.

New crate designcraft-pdf (L3): pages or spreads with MediaBox/TrimBox/BleedBox,
parent items with per-page folios, fills (solid + gradient swatches), aligned/dashed
strokes, corner options, opacity/blend, simple drop shadow, clipped images (JPEG
passthrough), and real text: composed glyph runs with embedded font subsets and
Unicode mapping from the story. CMYK as DeviceCMYK, RGB as DeviceRGB, spot swatches
as Separation, [Registration] as /All. Crop/bleed marks and page info. PDF/A-2b via
krilla; PDF/X-4 writes PDF 1.6 (output intent TODO).
Engine command file.exportPdf {path?, pages?, spreads?, bleed?, marks?, standard?,
compressImages?, title?, author?} (base64 when no path), CLI --export out.pdf with
--pdf-options, File > Export PDF... in the UI.
