moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 142e5d91e0 feat(eyedropper): A sampled colour goes to the stroke when the Stroke box is in front
As in InDesign, the Eyedropper applies a colour sampled from a placed image
to the fill or the stroke, whichever is in front in the toolbox: with the
Stroke box in front a selected line takes it on its stroke (it has no
fill to show it). The toolbox's state reaches tools through
ViewInfo/ToolContext::stroke_in_front.

Depends on #572.

aiongg 09e8118b21 Merge #618: Paste vector art from Illustrator, VectorCraft or Figma as editable paths
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs: next's file/layout exports + is_svg_markup
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs: next's logic(); the PR's RequestPaste hook and request_system_paste field dropped (next reads the system clipboard through Services::clipboard_text); run() routes edit.paste with SVG markup and no insertion point to edit.pasteSvg at next's view centre (with_system_clipboard's spread/at)
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs: next's activate/menu_enabled; pastes_from_system dropped
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: PR's view_centre dropped (next's canvas::view_centre); PR's Event::Paste SVG arm dropped (the paste event reaches run() through edit.paste); tests both, the PR's two UI tests rewritten against run() (paste event in the middle of the view; native-menu Edit > Paste reading SVG from the system clipboard, markup stays text at an insertion point)
Conflict: docs/control-protocol.md: ui.ime and ui.paste rows
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: logs both

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 f96895f400 feat(text): Edit type on a path along the curve
The Type tool's clicks, drags and double-clicks on type on a path went to
the character at the same spot of the straightened line, and the caret
and highlight were drawn straight. A click now finds the character where
its nearest point along the path is (compose::PathTextMap, from the line
to the path and back, as path_glyphs places the glyphs); the caret stands
across the path there and the highlight bends with the text. A click on
the letters, above the path, hits the frame.

Depends on #636 (PathWarp::nearest).

Jeffrey ThayneandClaude Opus 5.5 bb7e81425f Links: never read a linked text file that isn't a regular file
Checking a linked text file's status (every links.list, which the
Links panel polls) compared sizes and then read the whole file, so a
link to a FIFO or a device such as /dev/zero (size 0) never returned.
Only regular files are read now, and no more than the Data Merge
source limit (256 MiB): anything else shows as missing; a file over
the limit shows as modified when its size changed and as tooLarge
("Too large to check") when it didn't. Update and Relink read through
the same guard, and placing a file too large to check doesn't link it.
Unix test: a FIFO, /dev/zero, a folder and an over-limit file each
return promptly without being read (each call runs on a thread with a
timeout, so a regression fails instead of hanging). Thanks @aiongg.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 4769cadb77 feat(ui): The Effects dialog, as in InDesign
Object > Effects (Transparency..., Drop Shadow... and the rest, and their
shortcuts) and the Effects panel's fx button open the Effects dialog on
the chosen effect, turned on: the effect list with checkboxes on the left
and a summary line, the chosen page's settings on the right in the
document's units (Blending, Position with X/Y offsets, Options...),
Preview on the page while it is open, Cancel putting the page back, and
OK as one undo step.

- engine: object.effects {effects (merged, kept in range), opacity, blend}
- doc: drop and inner shadows default to InDesign's 120 degree light
- ui: dialogs::cancel (a previewing dialog reverts)

aiongg 270dd46b50 Text: stroke behind fill (#619)
A character attribute strokeBehindFill paints a text stroke under the fill
at double width, so its full weight lies outside the letters and they keep
their shape. Screen and PNG rendering, PDF export (stroke as outlines
first, then the filled text, so the text is not duplicated; clipped to the
outside of the glyphs when there is no fill), Create Outlines (outside-
aligned stroke), the Properties panel and Character Style Options.

IDML StrokeAlignment on CharacterStyleRange, CharacterStyle and
ParagraphStyle imports and exports as the attribute (OutsideAlignment =
on, CenterAlignment = off).

Isaac Levine 5473f42de4 Engine: guard test flags bare fs calls and Path probes, and scans every crate that reads paths
The scan now reads crates/*/src instead of only the engine, and flags fs::
after use std::fs or use std::{fs, ...}, std::fs, File::open/create,
OpenOptions, direct atomic writes and the Path probes (metadata,
symlink_metadata, canonicalize, read_dir, try_exists, exists, is_file, is_dir,
read_link). The files it leaves out are listed with the reason for each, and a
second test fails when an entry no longer needs its exception.

Isaac Levine d66f2c47ae Engine: route book chapters and atomic saves through the checked writers, and take file access out of fonts, IDML and ICC loading
Rebased onto the atomic save work: book chapter replacement, canonicalize and
the writability probe, and every command write now check the roots before
they reach crate::atomic. IDML import no longer reads linked images itself
(the engine passes its checked reader), load_icc_file is gone (profiles
arrive as bytes), the script loader goes through the host reader, and
FontDb::load_document_fonts asks a caller-supplied check about the folder and
each font file, so a link that leads out of the read root is skipped.

aiongg 86a0ce2cf7 Type: Alt+Left/Right kerns at the caret and tracks a selection
With the Type tool, Option/Alt+Left/Right with a caret changes the manual kerning of the pair at the caret by the Kerning/Tracking increment (a new document preference, 20/1000 em by default, in Preferences > Units & Increments); with a selection it changes the tracking of the selected text. Cmd (Ctrl on Windows and Linux) multiplies the step by five. A pair without manual kerning starts from 0. The new type.kernStep command does the work, one undo step per press.

Moving by words is Cmd+Left/Right on macOS and Ctrl+Left/Right on Windows and Linux; Option/Alt+Shift+Left/Right still extends the selection by words. Fixes #621.

aiongg cb38862846 Autoflow: one frame per column, as the page's columns are set
Autoflow on Place threads one frame per page column (right to left in a right-to-left story) and adds pages until the story fits; a frame the user drew or selected stays as it is, and later columns of its page are filled when it sits in one. Empty frames autoflow made at the end of the thread are removed. Pages Smart Text Reflow adds get a primary frame with the page's columns, and it removes trailing pages that hold only empty frames of the story. Fixes #625.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 cded7d997e feat(tools): Drag type-on-a-path start and end brackets
Selected type on a path shows its start and end brackets across the path,
as in InDesign, and the Selection and Direct Selection tools drag them
along it (Move Bracket, one undo step): the text starts and ends where
they are, and text past the end bracket is overset.

- doc: PathType.end (None: the path's end)
- geom: PathWarp::nearest, the arc length of the nearest point
- engine: type.pathOptions {end}; brackets stay on the path and can't cross
- compose: the line runs from the start to the end bracket
- idml: EndBracket read and written
- tools: Cursor::PathBracket

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 c35515c54d feat(tools): The Pen continues an open path from either end point
As in InDesign, the Pen over an end point of an open path (selected, or
under the pointer) shows a continue cursor; clicking it carries on drawing
that path, new anchors going on its subpath, and clicking its other end
closes it. Dragging from the end point first reshapes its direction
lines. From the first anchor the subpath is reversed first.

- engine: path.reverse (Object > Paths > Reverse Path), path.setAnchor;
  path.appendAnchor and path.close take a subpath, and appendAnchor
  refuses a closed subpath
- tools: Cursor::PenContinue

aiongg 4e7b33607e Pages panel: double-clicking a parent shows that parent; parents are identified by id
- layout.parents.edit takes `parent` (id, full name, or a prefix only one
  parent has) and asks the canvas to fit that parent's spread; turning
  editing on without one shows the first parent. The result names the
  parent shown.
- Commands resolve parents by id, then full name, then a unique prefix.
  Unknown or ambiguous names are errors, so a typo no longer clears a
  page's parent; null or "[None]" clears it.
- Pages panel: only the row of the parent the canvas shows is selected;
  rows, drag payloads and the Apply Parent menu carry the parent id.
  Parent rows show rendered thumbnails of the parent spread, cached by
  document revision like page thumbnails.
- Delete All Guides on a parent acts on the parent the canvas shows.

aiongg 796e9d713d Integration: the Eyedropper matches the clicked frame where no image pixel shows; sampling skips clipped-out pixels and hidden states (#572, #561)
color.sample takes `matchFrom`: with no opaque image pixel under the point (an empty part of an image frame, a transparent pixel), it applies that object's attributes as object.matchAttributes does, in the same command; the tool passes the object under the pointer. sample_item and the tool walk shown_children(), so only a multi-state object's active state is sampled, and sample_item skips points outside the graphic's clipping path. object.matchAttributes's body is a function both commands share.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 f25cae4780 feat(edit): Paste vector art from other apps as editable paths
Illustrator, VectorCraft, Figma and Inkscape put copied objects on the
system clipboard as SVG markup. Pasting it now creates editable paths, as
InDesign does with Illustrator art: fills, strokes (weight, caps, joins,
dashes) and opacity come through as unnamed colours, groups stay groups,
text comes in as outlines, CSS pixels become points (0.75 pt/px) and the
art is centred in the view. One undo step; garbage is refused.

- engine: edit.pasteSvg {svg, spread?, at?}
- canvas: Ctrl/Cmd+V with SVG on the clipboard (not while typing)
- Edit > Paste with nothing copied here asks for the system clipboard
- control channel: ui.paste {text}

native save/load round trip. Closes #597.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 42a4846ba8 fix(ui): Numbering & Section Options applies in one step and keeps keys for its menus
Review follow-up.

- OK ran layout.section and then layout.chapterNumbering: two undo steps,
  and a chapter start the second command refused (over 99 999) left the
  section applied. `layout.numberingOptions {page, …section, chapter}`
  checks both parts before the document changes and applies them in one
  edit; the window's OK runs it. layout.section and
  layout.chapterNumbering share its parsing.
- Enter or Escape with a Style menu open confirmed or closed the whole
  dialog. Dialogs now leave both keys to an open popup (read before the
  dialog draws, since egui closes a popup on Escape that frame).
- A start page of 4294967295 overflowed page_number (a panic in debug
  builds, page 0 in release). Page numbers saturate; layout.section
  refuses start numbers outside 1-99 999 (MAX_PAGE_NUMBER, as chapter
  numbers) and Document Setup clamps its start page instead of wrapping
  a 64-bit number into 32 bits.

Also rebased on main: the restructured ROADMAP keeps main's text, and the
inventory in docs/target-app-parity.md lists chapter numbering and the
window.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 73c37fdcca feat(ui): Lay out Numbering & Section Options like InDesign's
Layout > Numbering & Section Options now opens its own window instead of
the generated command form, on the section of the page in view: Start
Section (always on for page 1), Automatic Page Numbering or Start Page
Numbering at, and a Page Numbering group with Section Prefix, Style,
Section Marker and Include Prefix when Numbering Pages; then Document
Chapter Numbering with its style, Automatic Chapter Numbering, Start
Chapter Numbering at, Same as Previous Document in the Book (only in a
book) and the book's name. OK and Cancel sit beside the options, out of
the scrolling body.

OK runs layout.section and layout.chapterNumbering; a refused value
(a prefix over eight characters or with + or a comma, a start number
below 1) keeps the window open and changes nothing. Opening the window
reads the chapter numbering without running a command, so it doesn't
stop a Data Merge preview. New strings are translated (German, French,
Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, Italian).

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 65ef8a1c70 fix(ui): Keep Enter and Escape in the Save Document Preset popup; saved presets in the engine
Review follow-up. Enter in the Save Document Preset popup created the
document and Escape closed the whole dialog: the dialog footer took
both keys while a popup was open. The dialog now leaves Enter and
Escape to an open popup (read before it draws, as egui closes a popup
on Escape that frame): Enter in the preset name saves the preset,
Escape closes only the popup. Clicking the name field no longer closes
the popup either (menus close on any click; this one only outside), and
the field takes focus when the popup opens.

Saved presets lived only in the UI state, so `file.new {preset: name}`
refused them. They are now engine preferences (saved with prefs.json):
`file.savePreset {name, …the file.new settings}` replaces a preset of
that name and refuses built-in names, `file.deletePreset {name}` removes
one, `file.presets` lists them after the built-in ones (`saved: true`),
and `file.new {preset}` makes documents from them by name. The Saved tab
reads and writes them through those commands.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 564fc8cd98 feat(ui): Lay out the New Document window like InDesign's
File > New > Document now shows Recent, Saved, Print, Web and Mobile
tabs of page cards (drawn to the preset's proportions; double-click
creates) beside the preset's details: document name, width and height
with arrows, units, orientation, pages, start page #, facing pages,
primary text frame, columns and gutter, and collapsible margins and
bleed and slug per edge with link toggles. Save Document Preset keeps
presets by name; documents made are remembered for the Recent tab.
Small windows stack the details above the presets and scroll; the
layout mirrors for right-to-left languages. New strings go through the
translation tables (Italian, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese).

file.new takes intent, units, startPage and per-edge bleed and slug.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 c828e1f97c fix(engine): Keep section prefixes to InDesign's rules
A section prefix is at most eight characters and contains no plus or
comma (page references and ranges use them); `layout.section` refuses
others and leaves the section unchanged. Symbols, a footnote style,
no longer number pages. The parameter documentation lists the 01, 001
and 0001 styles, and a test pins the fields the generated dialogs read
from both numbering commands.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 35ec14390f feat(engine): Document chapter numbering
A document's chapter number now has a style (1, I, i, A, a, 01, 001,
0001) and a source, as in Numbering & Section Options > Document
Chapter Numbering: Automatic Chapter Numbering (one more than the
previous document in the book; 1 first), Start Chapter Numbering at,
or Same as Previous Document in the Book.

`layout.chapterNumbering {style?, start?, source?}` sets them (undoable)
and, with no parameters, reports them with the open book that holds the
document. The book's Update Numbering (`book.paginate`) resolves chapter
numbers in book order and reports them. Chapter Number variables and
cross-reference chapter numbers use the style.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 1dc33dd280 fix(render): One underline bar per stretch of text, no seams
The canvas drew an underline (and a strikethrough) as one rectangle per
glyph; where two anti-aliased edges met at a fractional pixel they left
a lighter seam between the letters. Contiguous bars of the same colour
and position are merged into one, as the PDF export already does.

moppeeerandClaude Opus 5.5 e0cf54ec2b fix(engine): note.edit reads CR as a paragraph return too
note.edit was the one story-text command still reading `text` without
text_param. The progress-log line held real CR and CRLF characters where
it meant to show the escapes; it reads `\r` and `\r\n` now.
