same_para_style_spacing uses deserialize_explicit_value, so Some(None) round-trips through
serde. Test: SameParaStyleSpacing as a Properties element on the based-on Normal style closes
the gap between consecutive headings; SetIgnore keeps the usual spacing.
Conflict: crates/compose/src/lib.rs: same-style gap replaces the pending space; otherwise next's text_above span space-before rule
Conflict: crates/doc/src/attrs.rs: same_para_style_spacing before the drop-cap fields and their doc
Conflict: crates/compose/src/tests.rs: both sides' tests
Conflict: crates/idml/src/tests.rs: both sides' tests
File > Place of a text file with `link: true`, or with the new
Preferences > File Handling > Create Links When Placing Text Files,
records on the story the file's path, size and hash, and the style map
and style-conflict option used. The Links panel and links.list show
these files OK / Modified / Missing like graphics. links.update imports
a modified file again into the same frames and thread with the saved
style map (Auto Rename's choices are kept, so no new _wrd_ styles). As
in InDesign, edits made in the layout are replaced: the Links panel and
Window > Links > Update Link ask first (Update / Cancel) when a linked
story was edited in the layout, while the links.update command updates
and returns a warning, as InDesign scripting does. links.relink,
links.goTo and links.embed (Unlink) take {story}. Saved in the native
format; IDML writes the text unlinked. Tracked changes import as
accepted, as before. Tests cover place-with-link, Modified/Missing
status, update with the saved style map keeping frames, the
local-edits warning, the confirmation dialog (confirm, cancel, no
dialog for unedited stories), relink, unlink, the preference, and a
native save/load round trip. Closes#597.

Review follow-up.
- OK ran layout.section and then layout.chapterNumbering: two undo steps,
and a chapter start the second command refused (over 99 999) left the
section applied. `layout.numberingOptions {page, …section, chapter}`
checks both parts before the document changes and applies them in one
edit; the window's OK runs it. layout.section and
layout.chapterNumbering share its parsing.
- Enter or Escape with a Style menu open confirmed or closed the whole
dialog. Dialogs now leave both keys to an open popup (read before the
dialog draws, since egui closes a popup on Escape that frame).
- A start page of 4294967295 overflowed page_number (a panic in debug
builds, page 0 in release). Page numbers saturate; layout.section
refuses start numbers outside 1-99 999 (MAX_PAGE_NUMBER, as chapter
numbers) and Document Setup clamps its start page instead of wrapping
a 64-bit number into 32 bits.
Also rebased on main: the restructured ROADMAP keeps main's text, and the
inventory in docs/target-app-parity.md lists chapter numbering and the
window.

A document's chapter number now has a style (1, I, i, A, a, 01, 001,
0001) and a source, as in Numbering & Section Options > Document
Chapter Numbering: Automatic Chapter Numbering (one more than the
previous document in the book; 1 first), Start Chapter Numbering at,
or Same as Previous Document in the Book.
`layout.chapterNumbering {style?, start?, source?}` sets them (undoable)
and, with no parameters, reports them with the open book that holds the
document. The book's Update Numbering (`book.paginate`) resolves chapter
numbers in book order and reports them. Chapter Number variables and
cross-reference chapter numbers use the style.

The DestIn mask now covers the whole render target (and the PDF's
exported area), with the gradient kept in item space through the paint
transform, since past the gradient's ends the end opacity carries on: a
child's long drop shadow or thick stroke is faded, not cut off at a box.
feather_bounds counts only shown children and active states, walking
nested groups without recursion.

A gradient feather on a group (Gradient Feather tool over grouped text, as
in LYH Studio's poster tutorial) did nothing on screen: groups never went
through the effects path. In PDF the group's mask was the group's own path
bounds, and a group has no path, so the mask covered a box of zero size and
hid the group.
- Item::feather_bounds: the box the feather spans, the objects' bounds for
a group.
- Render: a feathered group draws its objects in one layer, then fades it
with the same mask as other objects (fx::gradient_feather_mask).
- PDF: the group's mask spans its objects.

A placed PDF, EPS or SVG under the Eyedropper matches attributes again,
as before, instead of failing with "no placed image under the point"
(Asset::is_raster, shared by the tool and color.sample). color.sample
hands its colour to object.color, which now colours selected text, the
text of selected frames ({text: true}), or the typing colour of an empty
story; a caret in existing text is refused before a swatch or undo step.

#384's contour wrap followed the frame's path for Same As Clipping, which was all a graphic could clip to; #450 gives graphics clipping paths. contour_path takes the clip region (Graphic::clip_region) when the graphic has one. Test: a triangle clip widening downwards, Same As Clipping, left side: lines beside the narrow top run further in than those at the base.
#450 adds Graphic.clip; next added Graphic.wrap and Asset.pdf_box/pdf_crop. #450's tests in doc and render lack next's fields and next's tools test lacks clip; the tests didn't compile.
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: both progress lines
Conflict: docs/gaps.md: next's header, clipping paths added to its change list
Conflict: docs/target-app-parity.md: next's header, clipping paths added to its change list
Conflict: crates/doc/src/item.rs: both Graphic methods (next's shown_bounds, the branch's clip_region)
Conflict: crates/idml/src/names.rs: both imports (ClippingKind, ContourType)
Conflict: crates/idml/src/export.rs: both pushes, TextWrapPreference first, then the clipping settings
Conflict: crates/idml/src/import.rs: both lets (next's wrap, the branch's clip)
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/file.rs: next's size and transform, plus clip: None
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/datamerge/fill.rs: next's Graphic with wrap, plus clip: None
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/mathexpr.rs: next's Graphic with wrap, plus clip: None
Conflict: crates/pdf/src/tests.rs: both tests
A placed graphic keeps its clipping path (Detect Edges, Alpha Channel,
Photoshop Path or User-Modified Path) in graphic space, with the
options IDML carries. IDML import reads ClippingPathSettings and its
saved ClippingPathGeometry (anchors capped, non-finite subpaths
dropped); export writes them back. The canvas and PDF export clip the
image to the path inside the frame clip; an inverted path shows the
image outside it. Without saved geometry nothing changes.
object.clippingPathOptions reports a graphic's clipping path, inverts
it or removes it (Object > Clipping Path > None).
Fixes#450.
#84's Add to Swatches renamed the colour in footnotes and endnotes through its own helpers; next's Document::rename_swatch_refs (#416), which add_to_swatches calls after the merge, covered footnotes but not endnotes. rename_swatch_refs now walks each story's endnotes too, and #84's test checks an endnote.
Review fixes for text editing, paste and threading (fix84-text,
fix84-thread), the Italian/Japanese/Portuguese/Ukrainian Swatches hint
and #83's update merged into the PR branch.
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: header combines #84's threading change with next's 2026-10-11 changes; progress lines and change-log rows both (#84's 2026-10-12 first); stage line #84's (alpha ~5–7 h away)
Conflict: docs/gaps.md: #84's header text plus next's kerning/fonts/print changes
Conflict: docs/roadmap.md: next's M1 row (#186 done), #84's M2 row
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/style.rs: next's side; add_to_swatches calls next's Document::rename_swatch_refs, #84's rename_in_story/rename_in dropped (next's covers text, tables, cells, notes and items); #84's test kept
Conflict: crates/idml/src/tests.rs: next's side (#84 carries #83's tests.rs, already merged in 9196a164)
Conflict: crates/tools/src/select.rs: overlays keeps next's content-move ghosts and live corners, plus #84's snapped loaded-cursor drag frame; a Place click without a drag shows nothing
Conflict: crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/it.rs: next's side (the Swatches hint entry is already further down)
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: took #83's (main's restructured roadmap); the Threading inventory line goes into docs/target-app-parity.md
Conflict: crates/compose/src/lib.rs: kept this branch's undrawn trailing spaces after warichu; comment covers both the spaces and the drop cap
Conflict: crates/idml/src/tests.rs: took #83's (drop cap style as a Dropcap nested style, table style fills through the cascade); this branch has no changes of its own there
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: took main's restructured roadmap; this branch's inventory changes (Keep Lines Together default, IDML defaults, drop caps, IDML Kashidas) go into docs/target-app-parity.md, where the inventory lives now
Conflict: crates/format/src/lib.rs: load runs the format upgrade, then merges duplicate assets; kept both sets of tests
Share duplicate file data while keeping distinct link paths independent, and leave unused assets out of saved documents.
Validation: all six cargo xtask ci gates passed on the merge candidate; 1,170 native tests passed and all 15 WASM packages checked. Independent regression checks cover updates, relinking, embedding, undo and save/reopen.
Task: #420
Two linked files with identical bytes were merged into one asset, so updating, relinking or embedding one changed both placements and saves dropped one path. Assets now match only with the same link; identical bytes still share one buffer in memory.
Only these two dialogs read bare numbers in the ruler unit; other dialogs keep their meaning.
Apply to: this page, both pages of the spread, or all pages. Parent edits default to the whole parent spread.
Replace unchecked indexing in inherited_guides and marginsAndColumns with get().

#469's Document Setup sets every page's and parent page's margins; next's parent-margins model (470aac7d) keeps pages marked local_margins out of later parent edits. After a Document Setup margin edit, pages that now match their parent page (margins and columns) lose the local mark, and parent margins are synced; pages with their own columns stay local.
Conflict: crates/doc/src/page.rs: next's Spread::parent_page_for_side is the one parent-page choice (single-sided pages take the first page); the branch's parent_page_index is dropped and its IDML import caller (crates/idml/src/import.rs) uses parent_page_for_side
Conflict: crates/doc/src/build.rs: the branch's parent_page_of/parent_page/parent_guides/margin sync on next's parent_page_for_side; tests both
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/layout.rs: test modules both
Conflict: crates/engine/src/tests_idml.rs: tests both
Conflict: crates/format/src/lib.rs: next's upgrade and duplicate-asset merge, then the branch's mark_differing_margins_local, in both loaders
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: both log lines
Conflict: docs/target-app-parity.md: next's snapping line plus the branch's parent-page guides
Conflict: crates/compose/src/lib.rs: the custom boundary goes into next's shared wrap_exclusion(); free_slots keeps next's JumpObject handling outside it and takes the branch's combined BoundingBox/Contour arm
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/object.rs: params doc has next's content flag and the branch's custom-boundary note
Conflict: crates/engine/src/tests.rs: both tests
Conflict: crates/idml/src/export.rs: the boundary goes into next's text_wrap_pref()
Conflict: crates/idml/src/import.rs: next's object-style-aware text_wrap() plus the branch's boundary parsing for the item's own wrap; pdf_page_in and wrap_path_of both kept
Conflict: crates/idml/src/tests.rs: both sides' tests
Conflict: crates/doc/src/build.rs: next's parent_page_for (it calls Spread::parent_page_for_side); the PR's test kept
Conflict: crates/tools/src/snap.rs: shown_parent_page_index no longer exists (snap calls Spread::parent_page_for_side); the PR's test kept, calling parent_page_for_side on a two-page and a one-page parent
Conflict: crates/doc/src/page.rs (auto-merged, edited): parent_page_for_side picks the parent's first page for PageSide::Single, the PR's rule moved to where next makes the choice
Conflict: crates/doc/src/edit.rs: next's thread_frames (append_story); every rev += 1 is rev.wrapping_add(1)
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/fonts.rs: next's replace (the local-formatting pass moved out of this hunk)
Conflict: crates/engine/src/cmd/text.rs: next's format_chars (apply_char_attrs, typing format); rev += 1 is rev.wrapping_add(1)
Conflict: crates/compose/src/tests.rs: next's baseline-fit and keep tests, then the branch's OS/2 offset doc and code-page constant
Conflict: crates/fonts/src/tests_vertical.rs: testing imports from both (with_base, with_code_pages)
Finding a placed PDF's Bounding Box crop rendered its page at 2048
pixels and took the bounds of the painted pixels. PDF export measures
every such crop that import left unmeasured, so exporting a 17-page
document that places one complex illustration took about 4 s longer
than before crops were supported. The box is now the union of the
page's painted paths (strokes included), glyphs and images, each cut
to its clip, collected by interpreting the page without rasterizing
it: the same box, exact instead of to the nearest pixel, in
milliseconds.
Test: content_crop_box_is_measured_without_rendering_the_page.
A font's em box is its BASE em box; else, for a CJK font (its font
menu group isn't Western: meta or name languages, CJK code pages, else
kana, Hangul or ideograph coverage), the OS/2 typo ascender when the
typo ascender and descender span exactly one em; else 0.5 em + cap
height / 2; else 0.88 em. Latin fonts with a one-em typo box, such as
DejaVu Serif, centre on the cap height.
IDML import found every Bounding Box crop by rendering the PDF page at
2048 pixels, once per placement, so opening a 17-page document that
places one Illustrator file 16 times took about 54 s of CPU. Import now
measures the box only for a graphic without GraphicBounds; drawing finds
it through designcraft_render::shown_box (cached per file, page and crop)
and PDF export through with_pdf_boxes.
A font's em box is its BASE em box; else it tops at the OS/2 typo
ascender when the typo ascender and descender span exactly one em; else
it is centred on half the cap height (OS/2 sCapHeight, else the H
glyph's top), 0.5 em + cap / 2 above the baseline; else 0.88 em. The Em
Box Height first baseline, vertical text and declared_em_box all use
this one em box; declared_em_box is None only for the 0.88 em fallback.
