Merge main 8dff7ecdb0 into the original
reader head 4b7e4aaab6, preserving both
histories and their attribution. Keep main's placed-page crop/cache APIs,
crop-aware raster sizing, linked-file reads and unrelated dependencies while
retaining the shared reader's checked layered-export errors.
Route main's added PDF bounds code and placed-PDF tests through craft-pdf.
Correct the fetched-source notice to craft-libs 89dcbb3 and the transferred
source snapshot to PdfCraft 7437bde, with asset provenance recorded separately.
Add a regression for hidden-layer export with a placed TrimBox.
This records unchanged tree bf630f5252,
validated locally on 2026-10-20: 13 PDF backend tests, 94 renderer tests,
16 WASM package checks and PDF test compilation to WASM passed. Seven PDF
exports / ten pages match exact main in native PNGs, independent Poppler
pixels and extracted text. Formatting, dependency, clippy, asset and layer
checks passed; the lockfile did not drift.
Full local CI is not green: native validation recorded 2,927 passes, two
sandbox-denied listener binds and one unavailable GPU-adapter case. Five
other listener-dependent tests were not attempted; five existing ignores
remain. Runtime WASM was not executed without an available runner. These
limits are preserved, and no builds or tests were rerun for this commit.
The conflict was in links.rs, where main's atomic relink work (b050343a) and
this branch's path gate both changed `update`. Kept main's mechanism (build the
replacement with relinked_asset, then insert it) and this branch's gate (a link
craft-docpath refuses is missing and never read).
relinked_asset now takes the path to read and the link to record separately.
Previously they were one argument, safe only because update passed the raw stored
link; passing the resolved path to the old signature would have rewritten every
relative link to an absolute one on each refresh.
Also passes None for the document in main's embedded-status test, where the asset
has no link so the document is irrelevant.
craft-libs#169 is merged, so the fork pin is no longer needed. Pinned to
storytold/craft-libs 82a24b00 (main after the merge) rather than the older
12281d07, which predates resolve_absolute and the Windows colon refusal.
Resolve 12 conflicted files. Where both sides changed the same code:
- format: keep main's bounded-read load_zip (MAX_ENTRIES, read_entry) and
this branch's u64 version reporting, so a version above u32::MAX is named
as written rather than clamped. Both sides had fixed the same truncation.
- render: main's natural_size supersedes image_natural_size (it already
reads an EPS bounding box and also handles PDF pages); callers in table
and data merge now use it.
- images: keep the DSC-aware header scan and (atend) trailer lookup, take
main's classic-Mac line endings, and carry its overflow guard into
parse_box. eps_proxy draws main's simple rectangles before falling back
to the placeholder, still over a retained EPS source.
- engine/file: take main's placement shape (add_asset, crop box geometry,
place cursor, finite_rect, object effects) and keep this branch's
validate_placement in both branches; edit() works on a clone and commits
only on Ok, so validating inside it stays all-or-nothing.
- engine/links: keep building the replacement before edit() so a file that
cannot be read leaves the document untouched, and move main's crop_pdf
refresh into relinked_asset, which both relink and update go through.
- engine/export: EPS preview warnings join the font-embedding warnings
rather than shadowing them.
- idml: an EPS element keeps ActualPpi (its pixels are a preview raster);
main's PDF exclusion is unchanged.
Cargo.lock regenerated. Tests and doc strings from both sides kept.
Links, data sources, IDML package links and book chapters go through
io::document_path (craft-docpath) before they reach the file system:
relative paths resolve beside the document, and paths to other computers,
devices and URLs are missing, with the reason in links.list and Preflight.
IDML and INDD packages read a linked file where its link points on this
computer, then from the link's trailing names beside the package, only
when it is a regular file up to 256 MB holding an image or a graphic. A
file URI that names a host keeps it as a network path.
The merge took next's winit patch (rust-windowing/winit#4694, the Windows mixed-DPI drag fix) and
left out main's (skylartaylor/winit 3d51077f, with_close_requested_on_terminate), so Quit from the
Dock stopped asking to save (#623, released in 0.8.0). Cargo takes one winit patch, so the batch
keeps main's until one fork holds both commits; the Windows fix (#631) follows then.
#84 landed on main squashed (0f4f382b0), so the merge was resolved against #84's
tip as the base: main's version of #84 stands and only this branch's IME changes
are applied on top.
Conflicts and how each was resolved:
- crates/engine/src/cmd/text.rs: removed main's text.compose command, compose_text
and its compose_tests; text.insert keeps main's reset of the typing format after a
successful edit, skipped while an IME preview is open; reselection bumps the
revision.
- crates/engine/src/lib.rs: removed Session.composition and the hook that ended it
in execute_unguarded; set_active/add_document end the composition and reset the
Find scope; both test modules kept.
- crates/engine/src/tooling.rs: removed main's composition() and its
end_composition (the opposite semantics); begin_interaction no longer ends a
composition.
- crates/engine/src/cmd/edit.rs, file.rs, guard.rs, recovery.rs: main's code with
bump_revision in place of revision arithmetic; Revert takes the fresh state's
revision.
- crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: removed main's IME block, composition highlight and
remembered caret rect; this branch's ime_event/ime_output stay. Main's dead-key
test is ported to these events (the accent stays as typed when the caret moves).
- crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, menus.rs: both sides' fields and checks.
- apps/designcraft/src/main.rs, apps/designcraft-web/src/web.rs: both sides.
- docs/control-protocol.md: ui.ime row plus main's ui.click/ui.drag params.
Also: the remaining `revision += 1` sites on main use bump_revision, and two tests
compare revisions with `>`; the IME candidate window follows the caret on type on a
path; IME status lines in ROADMAP.md, gaps, ui-, localization- and target-app-parity
docs and roadmap.md.
Conflicts:
- README.md: one WGPU_VALIDATION_INDIRECT_CALL row (this branch's wording).
- apps/designcraft/src/gpu.rs: main's only change is a test tweak in the backend-fallback tests, which now live in gpu/backend.rs; kept this branch's file and ported the tweak there (the check depends on the chosen backend, not the candidate count).
- apps/designcraft/src/main.rs: dropped main's inline VALIDATION_INDIRECT_CALL block (#664) in favour of gpu::instance_flags(); kept the adapter selection, restart and first-frame watch, and took main's macOS Dock Quit handling, preserve_documents_on_exit in on_exit, and profile::config_dir/recovery_dir.
- crates/engine/src/recovery.rs: took main's version; its retained recovered checkpoints do what this branch's recovery change did.
- ROADMAP.md: main's file plus this PR's one progress-log line.
Add multi-click text selection, pending caret formatting and clipboard support, text-aware colour controls, guide/grid snapping, and frame threading with loaded-port interactions.
Include the layout, drop-cap and IDML updates carried from #83, with safeguards for generated and linked stories, external text references, local IDs, locked frames and atomic colour edits.

Placed PDFs rendered through hayro 0.7 from crates.io, whose
hayro-interpret divides integers in calculator functions without a
check, does not limit how deep functions nest and samples each mesh
triangle over its whole bounding box. A placed PDF whose calculator
function runs `1 0 idiv` or `-2147483648 -1 idiv` panicked the render.
A chain of 100,000 functions, each stitching function naming the next,
overflowed the stack and aborted the process. Mesh shadings with points
far off the page, ten thousand overlapping triangles or forty thousand
patches ran for over a minute or passed 2 GiB of memory.
[patch.crates-io] now takes hayro, hayro-interpret, hayro-syntax and
hayro-jbig2 from pdfcraft's vendor/ directory at b5467d93, with the
patches its vendor/README.md lists. The crate versions do not change.
The patched hayro-syntax sizes a page with a /UserUnit in points, and
pdf_page_box scales the page's boxes by the same unit, so with Crop to
the frame still shows the chosen box. NOTICE names the new source and
the licenses. The function and mesh tests in
crates/render/tests/placed_pdf.rs follow pdfcraft's tests in
crates/render/src/raster.rs.
.indd and .indt documents open through File › Open, drop, the web inbox,
file.open, file.openBytes, file.openIdml and the CLI. The engine converts
them to IDML in memory with storytold/indd-utils (pinned by rev, MIT OR
Apache-2.0, no dependencies, builds for wasm) and imports the result
through the existing IDML path. The converter's warnings come first in the
open result's `warnings`, before the IDML importer's and the font
warnings. A file the converter can't read is an open error, shown in the
Can't Open the File alert.
Routing: a path or name ending in .indd/.indt, or bytes starting with the
INDD signature (the web inbox passes the name without its extension).
opens_as_document and the desktop and web Open dialogs list indd/indt.
Tests use synthetic bytes only: signature-bearing junk, a zero-filled
.indd and a short .indt all fail as open errors with no document added;
a dropped unreadable .indd raises the open alert.
(cherry picked from commit bb8a6a23fa)
The engine's atomic module keeps its functions and signatures and delegates to craft-libs/craft-atomic (pinned to e9546e19), so every save and export caller is unchanged. write_atomic_with also turns a panicking writer into an error, so its temporary file is removed. Recovery checkpoints and package output keep their own writers, which replace links instead of following them.
On Unix, new files follow the umask and replaced files keep their permissions.
eot() only refused fsType 0x0002 exactly, so 0x0003 (which
FontFace::restricted_licence and file.package already treat as
restricted) and Bitmap embedding only (bit 9, e.g. 0x0200, 0x0208) were
embedded with their glyf outlines. Reuse restricted_licence and also
refuse bit 9, matching VectorCraft's Package (storytold/vectorcraft#782).
The .docx/.xlsx text import iterates attributes with quick-xml's default duplicate check, so one crafted
start tag with N attributes cost O(N^2) (RUSTSEC-2026-0194, fixed in quick-xml 0.41). Bumping also clears
RUSTSEC-2026-0195 (NsReader namespace allocation), which this workspace does not reach (no NsReader).
unescape_value() is deprecated in 0.41 (clippy -D warnings); normalized_value(Implicit1_0) is what the
deprecated method now does. Regression test: an element with 100,000 attributes parses in < 5 s.

- designcraft-color: ICC profiles (built-in RGB working spaces, user .icc files) go through
craft-cms. The default CMYK working space is craft-cms's Coated FOGRA39; CMYK swatches show
relative colorimetric with the settings' black point compensation, as placed images do.
Generic CMYK and Device CMYK stay selectable; names of the profiles FOGRA39 stands in for
resolve to it; ColorSettings::with_known_profiles replaces unavailable saved names with the
defaults (used when the UI restores saved settings). Lab, gamut error and proofing of ICC
CMYK spaces use craft-cms transforms. The Generic CMYK output profile is encoded by craft-cms.
- designcraft-images: Profile, Transform, TransformOptions, Intent and Builtin are craft-cms's;
its black point compensation replaces the module's sRGB table. Untrusted profiles are still
ignored with a log line.
- designcraft-pdf: the PDF/X output intent is the working CMYK space's profile: the FOGRA39
built-in with identifier FOGRA39, user profiles as loaded, Generic CMYK otherwise.
- moxcms is no longer a direct dependency.
Conflict: Cargo.toml: next's winit patch (rust-windowing/winit#4694, Windows mixed-DPI drags) kept; main's skylartaylor/winit patch held back (Cargo takes one patch per crate; both are single commits on v0.30.13 for different platforms, no published commit has both)
Conflict: Cargo.lock: next's winit source; main's ui-egui tempfile dev-dependency taken
Conflict: apps/designcraft/src/main.rs: next's startup; main's macOS with_close_requested_on_terminate block left out (needs main's winit patch); apps/designcraft/Cargo.toml keeps next's (no macOS winit dependency)
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: headers combined, logs both
Conflict: docs/target-app-parity.md: headers combined
Placed rasters are converted to display sRGB once, at decode time, in one
module (designcraft-images colour):
- embedded ICC profiles in JPEG, PNG, TIFF, WebP and PSD (RGB and grey) are
applied; sRGB-like profiles leave the pixels exactly as decoded
- CMYK JPEGs (incl. YCCK, Adobe-inverted values), CMYK TIFFs and CMYK PSD
composites go through their embedded CMYK profile, else the working CMYK
space, with the colour settings' intent and black-point compensation
- oversized (> 16 MiB), unreadable or mismatched profiles are ignored with a
log line
The render image cache is rebuilt when the colour settings change. PDF/A
exports of CMYK TIFFs get the same managed RGB as the screen.
Route AppKit termination through the existing unsaved-document close transaction using the immutable winit patch. Restore pending prompts from hidden or minimized windows and preserve answers across repeated requests.
Validation: all six local gates, native cancellation/retry/save smoke, and hosted platform checks.
Fixes#544.
PR #623.
win-mixed-dpi 38dad0fb. Cargo.lock: next's lock plus the winit git source and the dpi 0.1.1 it brings (merged clean; cargo metadata --offline leaves it unchanged).
Conflict: apps/designcraft/src/main.rs: next's startup (adapter selection, catch_unwind, apple events) with log_uncaptured_errors at the top of its wgpu_render_state block; request_adapter_texture_size and mod gpu_limits merged clean
Conflict: ROADMAP.md: progress log both
Conflict: docs/hardware-parity.md: header keeps next's change list plus the mixed-DPI note
winit 0.30.13 mishandles WM_DPICHANGED during a live drag on Windows 11:
the window flips between the two scales and grows past the GPU surface
limit. Pin winit to the one commit of rust-windowing/winit#4694, its
0.30.x backport of the fix.
The device asks for the adapter's largest texture side instead of
eframe's fixed 8192, and an uncaptured wgpu error is logged instead of
panicking, so a window larger than the surface limit draws wrongly
until it shrinks rather than closing the app.
